If The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt became slower, choppier, blurrier, or visually incorrect after you changed a graphics option, first undo that change and reproduce the problem in the same scene and resolution. Then change one setting at a time. This separates a costly option from driver, overlay, mod, game-file, and hardware issues without committing you to an unnecessary upgrade.
The correct fix depends on your game version, rendering API, output resolution, hardware, and symptom. The procedure below starts with reversible checks, follows CD PROJEKT RED’s documented performance steps, and explains when the announced DirectX 12 and Windows 11 changes actually apply.
Start with a controlled baseline
Do not keep changing several options at once. Resolution, the scene being rendered, your CPU/GPU configuration, and individual graphics settings can all change frame rate. A setting that appears fine in a quiet interior may cause a drop in a crowded city or during combat. Use a repeatable comparison instead of judging two unrelated scenes.

Write down the setup
Before making another change, record:
- The game version shown on the main menu.
- Whether the symptom is low average FPS, stutter, long loading, blur, flicker, another artifact, or a crash.
- The selected rendering API (DirectX 11 or DirectX 12, if both are offered by your installation).
- Output resolution, upscaling mode, frame-generation option, and the graphics settings you changed.
- Whether mods, trainers, or console commands are active.
- Whether the problem occurs everywhere or only in one repeatable location.
These details are also the information CD PROJEKT RED requests when you report a visual issue, so recording them now avoids losing the useful comparison state.

Undo the last change
Restore the previous value, or load a known baseline preset if your installation provides one. Keep the same output resolution and test in the same type of scene. If performance returns, restore the setting and raise or lower only that option in small steps. Make a note of each result. This is a diagnostic method, not a guarantee that one preset is best for every computer.
Identify what actually got worse

Fix low FPS and stutter in the official order
When reversing the graphics change does not restore smoothness, use the sequence CD PROJEKT RED publishes for performance issues. Perform a test after each step so you know which action helped.
- Clean-install the graphics driver. Use the clean-install procedure supplied by your GPU vendor for the relevant NVIDIA or AMD driver. A normal update can leave conflicting components behind; a clean installation gives the game a consistent driver state. If the slowdown began immediately after a driver update, CD PROJEKT RED says to try the previous driver version and report the issue if the regression remains. Do not treat a third-party driver utility as a required purchase.
- Verify the game files. Run your platform’s file-verification or repair command. This replaces missing or damaged files without asking you to guess which installation component is at fault. Restart the game after the check completes and test the same save and scene.
- Disable overlays. Temporarily turn off overlays from applications such as Discord, Ubisoft Connect, or GOG Galaxy. Overlay capture, notification, and hardware-acceleration hooks can alter frame pacing or conflict with a rendering API. Re-enable them one at a time after performance is stable.
- Close unnecessary applications. Exit browsers, launchers, monitoring tools, recording software, and other programs that consume CPU, memory, or GPU time. CD PROJEKT RED also advises closing antivirus or anti-malware applications where appropriate for troubleshooting. If you do so, disconnect from untrusted networks and restore protection immediately after the test.
- Retest before changing more graphics options. Use the same resolution and scene. If the problem is now gone, restore background programs individually to identify the conflict instead of leaving every program disabled permanently.
Graphics settings that commonly change the result
Resolution and upscaling
Higher resolution significantly affects FPS because the GPU must shade more pixels. Compare settings at the same output resolution; otherwise you cannot tell whether an effect or the pixel count caused the difference. A lower internal render scale or an upscaling mode may raise performance while changing sharpness and fine detail. Record the output resolution separately from the upscaler and sharpening values.

Screen-space reflections (SSR)
Patch 4.01, released on February 2, 2023, fixed the PC Screen Space Reflections setting and noted that players who had previously selected High SSR might notice a performance impact. This is version-specific historical context, not proof that SSR explains every current slowdown. If your issue began after selecting High, compare the prior value in the same reflective scene. Keep the patch version in your notes when reporting the result.
Ray tracing and other costly effects
If you raised several demanding effects together, return them to their former values and change them individually. Ray-traced lighting, shadows, foliage, volumetric effects, and reflections can have very different costs depending on the scene and GPU. The useful question is not which option is “best,” but which option gives an acceptable image at your resolution on your hardware and current game version.
Frame generation and reconstruction options
Treat frame generation, upscaling, and sharpening as separate variables. A setting can increase displayed frames while adding latency or visual artifacts, and another can improve smoothness while reducing detail. Capture a screenshot of any artifact before changing these options, then compare one option at a time with the same camera position.

Advice to “switch to DirectX 11” or “always use DirectX 12” is not valid for every installation. CD PROJEKT RED has announced that The Witcher 3 will run exclusively using DirectX 12 starting with its next update. Its current support intake still lists both DirectX 11 and DirectX 12 for versions it accepts, so the option available to you depends on the installed build and the timing of that update.

- Read the version number on the main menu.
- Check which API the launcher or in-game graphics menu actually offers.
- If both are available, test the other API only after saving your current settings and disabling overlays.
- Compare the same scene and resolution, and record whether the change affects FPS, stutter, artifacts, or crashes.
Do not assume that an API change fixes a driver regression, damaged files, or a mod conflict. Patch 4.03 included a historical DirectX 11 crash fix on certain AMD GPUs and added Intel Xe Super Sampling; those notes describe that patch’s behavior and should not be treated as a current guarantee for every driver or API combination.
Check requirements before blaming the hardware
CD PROJEKT RED’s announced minimum requirements begin with the next update, not automatically with every current installation. The published minimum configuration is:

The same announcement says the game will run exclusively with DirectX 12 from that next update. The expanded requirements guidance says Windows 10 is not guaranteed to stop running immediately, but CD PROJEKT RED will no longer develop or test the game on Windows 10 after the change. Therefore, do not call a CPU, GPU, SSD, RAM, or operating-system upgrade necessary without the player’s actual components, game version, resolution, and settings.
When the PC is below the announced minimum
First establish whether the problem appeared only after your graphics change. If the prior configuration was already marginal, lower resolution or demanding effects one at a time and verify that background applications are closed. If the game remains below a requirement, explain the limitation rather than promising a setting combination that the publisher does not support. Hardware advice belongs after the version and symptom are documented.

Handle visual problems without erasing the evidence
Blur, shimmering, flicker, incorrect reflections, missing objects, and color changes need different evidence from a simple FPS drop. Before resetting everything:
- Capture a screenshot showing the problem. If it is animated or intermittent, record a short video as well.
- Write down the exact output resolution, upscaling and sharpening options, API, game version, and changed graphics setting.
- State whether mods, trainers, or console commands are enabled. Reproduce once with them disabled if possible, but keep the original state in your notes.
- Repeat the issue in the same location and save the game there if the artifact is location-specific.
- Only then restore the prior value or baseline and test one variable at a time.
CD PROJEKT RED’s visual-issue intake asks for the game version, rendering API, mod status, and a screenshot. A save and DxDiag report can also be attached. This evidence lets support distinguish a reproducible rendering defect from a setting, driver, or modification conflict.

A long load is not automatically a graphics-quality problem. First repeat the load from the same save, close unnecessary applications, and verify the game files. Note whether the installation is on an SSD and whether the delay affects every load or only one location. If a monitoring, recording, antivirus, or overlay process is active, repeat the test with that process closed as part of the official performance checks.
If lowering resolution changes FPS but not loading time, treat the two symptoms separately. Do not keep reducing image quality when the evidence points to storage, file integrity, background activity, or a location-specific save.

Prepare an effective support report
Update the game to the newest version available for your platform before escalating. If the problem persists, use CD PROJEKT RED’s official visual-issue intake for artifacts and its performance support path for low FPS, stutter, or loading problems.
- Platform and store, plus the exact game version.
- Selected rendering API and the date or circumstance when the issue began.
- Output resolution, upscaling, frame-generation, and the settings changed immediately beforehand.
- Whether mods, trainers, or console commands were used.
- A screenshot for a visual issue; a video when the symptom is motion-related or intermittent.
- A save file when the problem occurs only in a particular location.
- A DxDiag report when requested.
- The clean-driver, file-verification, overlay, and background-application checks you already completed, with the result of each.
Describe a reproducible path, such as the save location, weather or scene, menu setting, and the exact action that triggers the artifact or slowdown. Avoid attaching only a generic statement that performance is “bad”; the comparison details are what allow support to reproduce it.

The safest workflow is reversible: record the state, undo the last change, compare one variable in one scene, run the official driver/file/overlay/background checks, verify the version before discussing DirectX or requirements, and escalate with complete evidence when the symptom remains.
