In a Tom’s Guide reader poll reported on August 23, 2026, 42% of voters blamed photos and 41% blamed app cache for their phone-storage problems. Together, those answers account for 83% of that poll’s responses—not 83% of phone-storage problems generally. To find what is actually filling your phone, check its storage breakdown first, then remove or move only the files and data you have identified.

Why does my phone storage say it’s full?

Photos and app cache were the two largest answers in the Tom’s Guide poll, but the poll does not establish how common those causes are among all phone users. Its other reported answers were forgotten downloads (9%) and old games (8%). The four categories add up to 100% of the poll’s reported responses.

Your own storage screen is a more useful guide than the poll. The largest category depends on what you keep on your device, so look before deleting. The original poll report is at Tom’s Guide.

How do I see what is taking up space?

On Android

  1. Open Settings and tap Storage.
  2. Review the categories and identify which one is using the most space.

Menu names and instructions can vary by phone; some Google instructions apply only to Android 14 and later. See Google Play Help’s storage guidance and, for Pixel-specific instructions, Google Pixel Phone Help.

How can I safely free space taken by photos and videos?

Back up photos or videos before removing their local copies. Confirm that the backup has finished and that you can access the account holding it; otherwise, deleting a local original could leave you without a usable copy.

Can I clear app cache without deleting app data?

On Android, cache and app storage are different controls. Clearing cache deletes temporary data; an app may take longer to open the next time while it recreates that data. Clearing storage permanently removes all app data, which may include settings or locally saved information. Google’s warning is explicit: “Clear storage Permanently deletes all app data.”

Android: clear cache, not storage

  1. Open Settings, then find the app in the apps list. The exact menu path varies by phone.
  2. Open the app’s storage controls and choose Clear cache.
  3. Avoid Clear storage unless you intend to erase the app’s data and understand what may need to be set up or restored again.

Clearing cache is not guaranteed to free much space: check the app’s storage details first. Google outlines the distinction in Free up storage on your Android device.

iPhone: cache is generally system-managed

Apple says iPhone manages cached and temporary files and removes them when it needs space. There is no universal Settings control that clears every app’s cache. Avoid treating the iPhone’s “Other” or System category as a folder to delete manually; Apple notes that cached music, videos and photos can appear under “Other” in Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes, and that the device handles cached and temporary files as needed.

What else should I check if photos and cache are not the problem?

  • Downloads and offline media: Review downloaded files and media stored inside the app that downloaded them. Deleting a file from one location may not remove a separate copy kept by an app.
  • Unused apps and games: Remove apps you no longer need. Android may automatically archive apps that are not used often while retaining personal data, subject to the app remaining available on Google Play. On iPhone, check the app’s storage entry and Apple’s recommendations before choosing whether to remove it.
  • Messages and attachments: Large videos, photos and other attachments can take space. Apple specifically recommends checking messages and attachments.
  • Files and locally stored videos: Check files, downloaded videos and locally downloaded iCloud Drive content. Make sure you do not need a file before deleting it.
  • Mail, Books and other app content: On iPhone, these can appear in the storage breakdown alongside apps, media and system categories.

Android also provides options to review downloads, app data and unused apps. For platform-specific details, use Google’s Android storage help or Apple’s iPhone storage guide.

Should I archive, offload or delete an app?

These options trade immediate space savings against how much app information or installation convenience you keep. Use the choice that matches whether you still want the app and whether its content is recoverable.

Choice What it does What to check
Clear Android cache Removes temporary app data; the app may be slower on its next launch. Choose cache rather than storage if you want to avoid erasing all app data.
Clear Android app storage Permanently removes all app data. Use only if you accept losing locally stored app information or know how to restore it.
Archive an Android app Can free space while retaining personal data; Android may archive infrequently used apps automatically. The app must remain available on Google Play for reinstalling.
Remove an app Deletes the app from the device and can free its app storage. Check whether its documents, downloads or other content are stored separately and whether you need them.
Remove local copies of backed-up photos Frees device space while leaving backed-up copies available through the relevant service. Confirm backup completion, account access and the conditions for viewing the remote copies.

A safe order for freeing space

  1. Check the built-in storage breakdown and note the largest category.
  2. Review that category’s contents before deleting anything.
  3. For photos or videos, confirm a complete backup and account access before removing local copies.
  4. For Android apps, clear cache if temporary data is the target; do not confuse it with clearing app storage.
  5. Check downloads, app-held media, messages, files and unused apps if the main category remains unclear.
  6. Return to the storage screen to confirm that space was freed and decide whether another category needs attention.
