Godlike.Host offers hosted SCP: Secret Laboratory servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
If SCP: Secret Laboratory shows “Client failed to authenticate in time,” “Server Verification Failed,” a connection failure, or remains stuck on authenticating, first try a different server. If every server fails, fully restart Steam, add the documented --weak-http-security launch option, and check whether security software is blocking the game. These steps separate a single-server problem from a Steam, Northwood Central Server, regional, or local-network problem without immediately reinstalling the game.
What the SCP: Secret Laboratory authentication error means
SCP: Secret Laboratory does not authenticate players entirely inside the game client. It contacts Northwood Central Servers, which handle player authentication, generate the public-server list, and provide the server-side part of the anti-cheat system. Northwood’s EULA, last updated 22 December 2022, defines the Central Server as “a server hosted by Northwood that handles authentication of Players, generation of the in-game list of public Servers, or server-side part of the Anti-cheat System.”

Northwood’s Tech Support Wiki describes the timeout variant this way: “This issue is typically caused by a user’s authentication token being rejected or reassigned constantly by our central servers.” An authentication error therefore does not automatically mean that your installation is corrupted. The failure can occur while Steam, the game, a particular game server, your network security software, or a regional internet restriction is preventing the authentication exchange from completing.
Players use several names for closely related failures:

- Client failed to authenticate in time: the client did not complete authentication before the timeout.
- Server Verification Failed: the connection did not pass the verification stage. Steam’s support guidance treats a failure on only one server differently from a failure on every server.
- Stuck on authenticating: the client is waiting for a response rather than completing the login path.
- Connection failure: a broad description that can include an unreachable host, a Steam-side outage, a rejected token, or a blocked route.
- Authentication error (government restrictions): a regional case in which government internet controls prevent the client from reaching authentication servers.
The wording matters. Record the complete red or diagnostic message shown after the kick or failed connection; that text is more useful to support than a shortened description such as “auth error.”
First determine whether the failure is global or server-specific
Do this before changing files or network settings. A single server can have a verification or availability problem while the rest of the game works normally.
- Return to the public-server list and choose a different server. Prefer a second server in a different community or region so that you are not testing two endpoints with the same local problem.
- Wait for the connection attempt to finish and note the exact message, not just whether you were kicked.
- Try one more server if the first comparison is inconclusive.
- If another server works, treat the original failure as server-specific and report it to that server’s administrators. There is no reason to alter your firewall or game installation solely because one endpoint failed verification.
- If no server works, check Steam’s service status and whether the Steam Friends list reports a lost connection. Steam’s official “Server Verification Failed” guidance recommends this check when the client cannot connect broadly.

This test also gives you evidence for a support request. “Every server fails” and “only one named server fails” describe different problems and should not be reported as if they were the same.
Restart Steam completely
Steam can lose its Friends-network connection while its window remains open. Closing the game alone may leave the Steam client and its background processes in the same broken state.

- Exit SCP: Secret Laboratory.
- Open Steam’s main menu and choose Steam → Exit, rather than merely closing the library window.
- Confirm that Steam has stopped running. If Steam still appears in the Windows notification area, open its menu and exit again. You can also verify in Task Manager that no Steam client process remains before proceeding.
- Wait briefly, then start Steam again and allow it to reconnect to Friends and its services.
- Launch SCP: Secret Laboratory from the Steam Library and test more than one server.
Restarting is a low-risk, reversible check. It changes no game files and provides a useful result: if authentication works immediately afterward, the earlier state was probably a transient Steam-client or session problem. If the same error returns on every server, continue rather than repeatedly restarting.
Add Northwood’s documented --weak-http-security launch option
Northwood documents --weak-http-security for authentication-timeout problems and for the government-restrictions case. It changes how the client handles the HTTP portion of the connection, so it is a configuration test, not a guarantee that every authentication failure will disappear. Northwood warns that it may make the public-server list load more slowly.

- Right-click SCP: Secret Laboratory and choose Properties.
- Stay on the General tab and find the Launch Options field.
- Enter exactly
--weak-http-security, including the two hyphens and no quotation marks. - Close the Properties window, start the game, and test at least two servers.
Do not add extra punctuation, a trailing explanation, or a second copy of the option. If you later want to remove the test, return to the same field, delete the text, close Properties, and relaunch the game. Removing it restores the previous launch configuration; it does not modify your account or server data.
Use the result diagnostically. If the option lets you authenticate, leave it enabled only if you accept the documented possibility of slower server-list loading and the game remains stable. If it changes nothing, remove it or keep it only while Northwood support asks you to test with it; move on to the next fault domain instead of stacking random launch parameters.

Check Windows Firewall and security software without disabling protection
Northwood’s government-restrictions guidance recommends allow-listing SCPSL in antivirus software. A local firewall or security product can also block the game’s network traffic, but the documented guidance does not establish that every authentication error is caused by a firewall. Treat this as a targeted check, not proof that your security software is at fault.
Allow the game through the products you actually use
- Open the control panel for your antivirus or endpoint-security product and locate its application allow-list, exclusions, or firewall rules.
- Add the SCP: Secret Laboratory executable or the Steam-installed game entry when the product offers a specific application rule. Use the product’s normal “allow” or “permit network access” action rather than disabling all protection.
- In Windows Security, review Firewall & network protection and the list of apps allowed through the firewall. Ensure the game is allowed on the network profile you are using.
- Apply the change, restart the game, and test more than one server.
Menu names vary by Windows version and by security product, so do not create a broad inbound rule simply because a guide uses different labels. If the allow-list entry already exists, changing it again is unlikely to add evidence; capture the product name and rule state for support instead.

Record what you changed before testing. If the authentication result is unchanged, restore the previous rule rather than leaving an unnecessary exception. Never solve this error by turning off antivirus or the firewall permanently. A controlled allow-list entry gives you a testable result while preserving the rest of the system’s protection.
Read the console message before choosing another fix
The in-game console or the text shown immediately after a failed connection can distinguish several causes that look identical in the server browser. Capture the complete message, including capitalization and any error code, in a screenshot or copied text.

- Token rejection or repeated reassignment: consistent with Northwood’s description of the authentication-timeout problem. Report the exact wording rather than trying unrelated file repairs.
- Unreachable host or connection failure: points toward a route, server, or filtering problem. Compare the result on another server and note whether Steam Friends remains connected.
- Steam-side outage indication: wait for Steam services to recover and retest before making local configuration changes.
- Government or regional restriction wording: follow the regional section below and include your country or network context in a support request.
Do not treat --authdebug as an automatic fix. Diagnostic flags can be useful when current Northwood support guidance asks for them, but they do not repair a rejected token or an unreachable authentication server. If support requests diagnostic output, reproduce the failure once, save the resulting text, and send it with the game version and operating-system details.

Northwood’s page titled “Authentication error (government restrictions)” says that some players cannot connect because government internet restrictions in their country prevent the client from reaching authentication servers. This is a different fault domain from a single misbehaving community server.
- Confirm that the failure occurs across multiple servers and record the regional wording exactly.
- Restart Steam completely, as described above.
- Add
--weak-http-securityusing Steam’s Library → right-click the game → Properties → Launch Options path. - Allow-list SCPSL in antivirus and firewall software, then retry.
- If the restriction remains, contact Northwood through its support site or technical-support Discord channel and state your country or network context.
A VPN can be a conditional network experiment for someone whose ordinary connection is subject to a documented regional restriction, but Northwood’s official guidance does not endorse a particular VPN service. Do not present a VPN as a universal fix, and do not use one to bypass rules that apply to your network or jurisdiction. If you test an alternate route, keep the test temporary, follow the service’s terms, and report the normal and alternate results to support.

The order is deliberate. The first checks are low-risk and narrow the fault domain. Configuration edits come only after you know whether the problem affects one server or all servers. A support-quality diagnostic record is more valuable than repeatedly applying every available setting.

Prepare an effective Northwood support request
If the documented steps do not restore access, use Northwood’s official support site or its technical-support Discord channel. Northwood’s contact information identifies Discord as the fastest support route and directs users to the support site for frequently asked questions.
Include these details
- The exact error text, copied from the game or shown in a screenshot.
- A screenshot of the console or the complete diagnostic line displayed after the kick.
- Your SCP: Secret Laboratory game version.
- Your operating system and, if relevant, whether the computer is on a school, workplace, hotel, or otherwise managed network.
- Whether one server, several servers, or every server fails.
- Whether Steam Friends showed a lost-connection message.
- Whether a complete Steam restart changed the result.
- Whether
--weak-http-securitywas tested and what happened to server-list loading and authentication. - Whether SCPSL was already allow-listed in antivirus and firewall software.
- Your country or region if the message refers to government restrictions.
Describe the sequence, not just the symptom
A useful report might state that one server failed verification, two other servers connected, Steam Friends stayed online, and no launch option was needed. A different report might state that every server failed, Steam was restarted, the launch option made no difference, and the console showed a regional restriction message. These reports lead support toward different investigations. Avoid sending account credentials, authentication tokens, or unrelated personal data.
Common mistakes that prolong the problem
- Reinstalling before testing another server: a server-specific or Central Server issue will not be established by reinstalling files.
- Closing only the game: Steam may still be running with a lost Friends-network connection; use Steam → Exit and reopen it.
- Typing the launch option incorrectly: the required value is exactly
--weak-http-security. - Disabling all security software: use a specific allow-list rule and restore any temporary test after it produces no change.
- Assuming a VPN is a general solution: it is relevant only as a cautious, conditional network test for a documented regional restriction.
- Reporting only “authentication error”: the full console message, server pattern, Steam status, and steps already attempted are what let support separate token, host, Steam, and regional causes.
- Leaving diagnostic options enabled indefinitely: use diagnostic flags such as
--authdebugwhen current support instructions request them, not as a substitute for a fix.
When to stop troubleshooting locally
Stop changing local settings when the failure affects every server, Steam is connected, the documented launch option and allow-list check have produced no change, and the console still shows an authentication or regional message. At that point, Northwood’s Central Server path or a network restriction is outside what a local reinstall can prove. Send the evidence package to Northwood instead of cycling through unverified tweaks.
No reliable official figure establishes a success rate, incident frequency, or average resolution time for these errors. The practical goal is therefore not to promise a guaranteed quick fix, but to identify the fault domain with reversible tests and give support enough exact information to act.
