How to Fix the PHP ZipArchive Library Missing or Disabled

If PHP reports Class ZipArchive not found, says the ZIP extension is missing, or Composer cannot find a ZIP extension or an unzip/7z utility, fix the PHP runtime that actually runs the failing command or website. First identify that runtime and its loaded php.ini; then install or enable ZIP, restart the relevant service, and verify both the module and the ZipArchive class.

What the ZipArchive error means

PHP’s ZIP extension provides transparent reading and writing of ZIP archives and exposes the ZipArchive class. The error does not usually mean that a particular archive is corrupt. It means the PHP process executing your code has not loaded the ZIP extension, or that PHP tried and failed to load its binary dependencies.

The same computer can have several independent PHP runtimes. Command-line PHP, Apache’s PHP module, PHP-FPM, a container, and a hosting-control-panel version may each use a different executable, version, architecture, or php.ini. Enabling ZIP for one does not automatically enable it for the others.

Identify the runtime that is failing

Do this before editing configuration. A change made to the wrong PHP installation has no effect and can make troubleshooting confusing.

CLI checks

1. Run the command in the same shell, virtual environment, container, or deployment job that reports the error.
2. Record the version and build details with php -v.
3. Find the configuration files used by that executable with php --ini. Note the line labelled Loaded Configuration File and the additional scan directory.
4. Check whether ZIP is listed with php -m. On Windows you can filter the result with php -m | findstr /i zip; on Unix-like systems use php -m | grep -i '^zip$'.
5. Check the class directly with php -r "var_dump(class_exists('ZipArchive'));". A result of bool(true) confirms that the executing CLI process can use the class.

Keep the PHP version, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, thread-safety mode on Windows, executable path, and loaded configuration path. Those details determine which package or DLL is compatible.

Web-server checks

CLI output does not prove that a website uses the same PHP. Create a temporary file in the document root containing <?php phpinfo(); ?>, open it through the affected site, and inspect:

• PHP Version and the server API, such as Apache module or FPM/FastCGI.
• Loaded Configuration File, which is the php.ini used by the web request.
• extension_dir, the directory from which PHP loads extensions.
• A zip section, which appears when the extension is loaded.

Delete the diagnostic file immediately after checking it. A public phpinfo() page exposes configuration and build information that should not remain available.

Containers, FPM and managed hosting

For PHP-FPM, inspect the FPM pool or container image rather than assuming the host’s CLI PHP is relevant. Restart the FPM service or recreate the container after changing packages or configuration. In managed hosting, you may be unable to edit php.ini, install modules, or restart PHP. In that case ask the provider to enable ZIP for the specific web PHP version, or use a plan and deployment environment where you control extensions.

Fix ZIP on Windows

PHP 8.2 and newer: enable the DLL explicitly

PHP’s ZIP installation manual changed the requirement in PHP 8.2.0: php_zip.dll must be enabled in php.ini; earlier Windows builds had ZIP built in. Therefore a PHP upgrade can expose this error even when the application and archive have not changed.

1. Use the failing runtime’s php --ini, or the web runtime’s phpinfo(), to locate the active php.ini.
2. Open that file with an administrator-capable editor if necessary. Do not edit a sample file or a different PHP installation.
3. Confirm that the extension directory contains php_zip.dll. The normal location is the PHP installation’s ext directory.
4. Enable the extension. Depending on the installed configuration, the directive may be extension=zip or an equivalent DLL directive such as extension=php_zip.dll. Ensure the line is not commented out with a leading semicolon.
5. Save the file and restart the service that loads PHP: Apache, IIS, or the applicable PHP-FPM process. Restarting a terminal does not reload an already running web worker.
6. Reopen phpinfo() through the website and confirm that a ZIP section is present. For CLI, rerun php -m and the class_exists check.

Resolve an Unable to load dynamic library warning

If PHP prints a startup warning about php_zip.dll, the directive is being read but the DLL cannot be loaded. The Windows extension guidance identifies three frequent causes:

• Wrong extension directory: extension_dir points somewhere that does not contain the DLL.
• Missing dependent DLLs: the ZIP extension or PHP itself requires runtime libraries that are absent from the process’s search path.
• Build mismatch: the extension does not match the PHP major/minor version, CPU architecture, or thread-safety setting.

Check the exact path and error text in the CLI startup output and PHP or web-server logs. Make sure the DLL came from a build intended for the same PHP version and for the same x86/x64 and thread-safe (TS) or non-thread-safe (NTS) mode. Do not copy a DLL from an unrelated PHP installation. Correct the path or install the matching PHP distribution, restart the service, and test again.

Fix ZIP on Linux

Use a distribution package

Most Linux distributions provide a PHP ZIP package, often named php-zip or a versioned equivalent. The package name and command vary by distribution and PHP version, so select the package from the repository that supplies the PHP executable used by your application. Installing a package for a different PHP stream can leave the web server and CLI on different module sets.

1. Identify the runtime with php -v, php --ini, and your web server’s phpinfo() page.
2. Use your distribution’s package manager to install its ZIP module for that exact PHP stream. Confirm that the package is enabled rather than merely downloaded.
3. Restart the PHP handler used by the site, such as the matching PHP-FPM service, or restart Apache when PHP is loaded as an Apache module.
4. Verify with php -m for CLI and with the web runtime’s phpinfo() page. Test class_exists('ZipArchive') in the same context as the application.

Do not paste a command intended for Debian/Ubuntu, a DNF-based system, Alpine, Arch, or macOS into another operating system. Repository naming, service names, and supported PHP versions differ.

Build PHP from source

A source build must include ZIP support. PHP’s build documentation specifies --with-zip. For PHP 7.4 and later, a system libzip can be selected with --with-libzip=DIR. The manual requires libzip 0.11 or newer and recommends 0.11.2 or later.

1. Install a compatible libzip development package, or make an appropriate libzip installation available at a known directory.
2. Configure PHP with --with-zip and, when needed, --with-libzip=DIR.
3. Build and install PHP using the same prefix and service integration as the existing runtime.
4. Confirm that the rebuilt executable and the web handler are actually selected. A successful build does not switch an existing FPM pool or Apache module automatically.
5. Restart the handler and verify the ZIP module and ZipArchive class.

If configuration reports that libzip is missing, the build environment lacks the required development files or PHP is looking in the wrong directory. Install a compatible development package or point --with-libzip at the correct location, then rerun configuration.

PECL, packaged builds and containers

PECL builds

The PHP ZIP installation documentation points to PECL for extension installation, and PECL publishes ZIP builds for Windows. Choose a build matching the running PHP version, architecture, and thread-safety mode. After installation, enable it in the active configuration, restart the relevant service, and verify in that runtime. A PECL module installed for CLI PHP will not repair a website that uses another PHP installation.

Container images

Install ZIP in the image build rather than making an undocumented change inside a running container. Rebuild and redeploy the image, then run the diagnostic commands inside the container and make a request through the deployed web service. Ensure the PHP binary used by the application is the one whose image layer contains the extension.

Composer says ZIP and unzip or 7z are missing

Composer can report two separate capabilities: PHP’s ZIP extension and an external archive utility such as unzip or 7z. The first is fixed by loading the PHP ZIP extension in Composer’s own runtime. The second requires an executable installed in the operating system environment available to Composer.

1. Run Composer from the same account, shell, container, or deployment job that fails.
2. Check which PHP Composer invokes and inspect that runtime’s module list and php.ini.
3. Enable or install ZIP for that PHP runtime, restart any persistent worker, and rerun the Composer command.
4. If Composer still requests unzip or 7z, install one of those utilities through the operating system’s supported package source, or use an environment where one is already available. Confirm that it is on the executing process’s PATH.
5. Run the original install or update again. Do not treat the presence of ZIP in your web server’s phpinfo() page as proof that the Composer process can see it.

Verify the repair end to end

A module-list check is necessary but not sufficient. Verify the exact operation that previously failed.

1. For CLI applications, run php -m, then php -r "var_dump(class_exists('ZipArchive'));", and rerun the failed command.
2. For websites, confirm the ZIP section in the web runtime’s phpinfo() output, remove the diagnostic page, and repeat the request that produced the error.
3. For PHP-FPM, restart the pool or service after configuration changes and verify through an actual HTTP request.
4. For Composer, rerun the same install, update, or framework command under the same user and environment.
5. If the application still fails, log the PHP version, executable or handler, loaded configuration path, extension_dir, and the exact startup warning. These identify whether the remaining problem is selection, loading, or application-level behavior.

• Changing configuration without restarting Apache, IIS, PHP-FPM, or the container process that cached it.
• Leaving a public phpinfo() file online after testing.
• Assuming the ZIP extension supplies the operating-system unzip or 7z command required by some Composer workflows.

Frequently asked questions

Can application code enable ZipArchive?

No. The extension must be installed and loaded by the PHP runtime before application code starts. A script can detect its absence, but it cannot replace the server-level module installation.

Why did the error appear immediately after upgrading PHP?

On Windows, PHP 8.2 and newer requires explicit enabling of php_zip.dll, whereas earlier versions treated ZIP as built in. An upgrade can therefore require a new php.ini entry and service restart.

Do I need both the ZIP extension and unzip?

They are different components. PHP code that calls ZipArchive needs the ZIP extension. A Composer workflow may additionally use an external unzip or 7z executable, depending on what is available in its environment.

What if I cannot restart the web server?

A configuration edit will not affect already running workers until the PHP handler reloads. Ask the administrator or hosting provider to restart the relevant service; on a container platform, deploy a rebuilt image.
