Most WordPress HTTP upload errors are image-processing failures rather than ordinary upload failures. Start by retrying with a smaller, simply named image, then check which editor WordPress is using. If Imagick is active, a PHP memory or execution-time limit, an Imagick configuration problem, or a security rule is often responsible. Switching temporarily to GD, increasing the effective PHP limits, or having the host inspect its logs usually identifies the cause.
The message is deliberately generic, so use the ordered checks below instead of repeatedly re-uploading the same large file. Menu names and server defaults vary by WordPress, PHP, and hosting provider.
What the WordPress HTTP error actually means
When you upload an image, WordPress first accepts the file and then asks a PHP image editor to read it, create resized versions, extract metadata, and write the results into the uploads directory. The browser can display an HTTP error when any of those server-side stages fails. It does not, by itself, identify a bad internet connection or a single HTTP status code.
The two editors normally encountered are Imagick, the PHP extension that uses ImageMagick, and GD, a separate PHP graphics extension. Core WordPress developers have associated many HTTP upload errors with a misconfigured Imagick extension, but the same symptom can also come from PHP limits, file permissions, a security layer, a plugin, a theme, or an unusually demanding image. The exact cause has to be established on your installation.

Run the quick checks first
- Refresh the administration page and sign in again. A stale nonce or expired session can make an otherwise valid upload fail. Retry from Media > Add New.
- Use the browser uploader. If the normal drag-and-drop area fails, use the browser-uploader link on the Add New Media screen. A difference between the two paths points toward a JavaScript, caching, or interface problem rather than image processing.
- Clear relevant caches. Clear the browser cache and any page, security, or reverse-proxy cache that sits in front of the WordPress administrator. Test in a private window to remove extensions and stale cookies from the equation.
- Rename the file. Use a short name containing letters, numbers, hyphens, and a single extension, such as
product-01.jpg. Remove emoji, accented characters, brackets, multiple dots, and very long names while testing. - Try a smaller copy. Export a JPEG or PNG with reduced pixel dimensions and reasonable compression. This is a diagnostic test, not a permanent quality requirement; if the smaller copy succeeds, resource use or a problematic metadata block is likely involved.
Record which file succeeds, its dimensions, format, and approximate size. That comparison is more useful to a host than the generic browser message.
Use the symptom to choose the next test

Confirm which image editor WordPress is using
Before changing code, find out whether the failing request reaches Imagick or GD. In most current WordPress installations, open Tools > Site Health > Info and expand Media handling. The section reports the available editor, supported formats, and related PHP details. Some hosts expose equivalent information in their own debugging panel; the label can differ by version.
- If only
WP_Image_Editor_Imagickis available, an Imagick extension or ImageMagick policy problem deserves priority. - If GD is available as well, forcing GD for a controlled test can separate an Imagick fault from a general upload or permission fault.
- If neither editor is available, ask the host to install or enable a supported PHP graphics extension. WordPress cannot create thumbnails without one.
Do not assume that seeing the Imagick PHP module means it is correctly configured. The module can load while ImageMagick policies, resource limits, or thread settings still prevent WordPress from processing a particular file.
Raise the effective PHP limits without guessing
There are several different limits. WP_MEMORY_LIMIT is a WordPress setting; PHP’s memory_limit is enforced by the PHP runtime. max_execution_time controls how long a PHP request may run. Upload size directives such as upload_max_filesize and post_max_size govern transport, but increasing them does not give the image editor more memory or time.
Try the WordPress memory constant
Back up wp-config.php, then add the following line above the comment that says WordPress editing is finished (the line commonly containing “That’s all, stop editing”). Keep the existing PHP opening tag and syntax intact.

define('WP_MEMORY_LIMIT', '256M');Save the file, retry the same image, and then remove or adjust the line if your host specifies a different supported value. A support thread reported that this constant made no difference on that server, so a successful save of the file does not prove that PHP adopted the value.
Check the PHP value at the host level
If the constant has no effect, ask the host which PHP configuration applies to the site and whether a per-directory override is permitted. On hosts using CGI or PHP-FPM, a .user.ini file in the site’s document root may accept settings such as:
memory_limit = 256M
max_execution_time = 120The exact syntax and permitted values are host-dependent, and PHP may cache .user.ini changes for a period before applying them. One reported case was fixed by changing these PHP-level values rather than by changing WP_MEMORY_LIMIT. Do not create a second conflicting file in another directory without understanding which file PHP reads.
Verify rather than infer
Use Site Health information, a host control panel, or a temporary diagnostic supplied by your host to confirm the active memory_limit and max_execution_time. A host-level cap can override wp-config.php, and a managed environment may reject local overrides. Never publish a diagnostic page that exposes PHP configuration; remove temporary diagnostics after testing.
Force GD as a controlled Imagick test
If GD appears in the Media handling information, make it the first editor temporarily. The wp_image_editors filter controls the order in which WordPress tries editors. Add this code to a small site-specific plugin or the active theme’s functions file:

});Back up the file before editing. A site-specific plugin is safer than a parent theme file because a theme update can overwrite the change; if you use a child theme, place it in the child theme instead. Test with the same image and check whether thumbnails and other image sizes are generated.

- GD succeeds: the upload path and basic permissions probably work, so investigate Imagick’s PHP extension, ImageMagick policies, resource limits, or thread behavior with the host.
- GD also fails: look beyond Imagick at PHP limits, the uploads directory, plugins, theme code, mod_security, and server logs.
- GD is unavailable: do not leave a filter that names a missing class; have the host provide a supported editor.
After diagnosis, either keep the editor that meets your quality and format requirements or remove the filter and repair Imagick. GD and Imagick can differ in supported formats, color handling, and performance, so a forced editor should be an intentional choice.
Limit Imagick threads on shared hosting
Some shared hosts restrict CPU or process resources. A troubleshooting recommendation is to add the following Apache environment setting to .htaccess:

This directive is not supported by every web server or hosting stack; an unsupported directive can produce a 500 error. If that happens, restore the backup immediately and ask the host to apply an equivalent ImageMagick resource policy. Limiting threads can reduce parallelism and make processing slower, so use it as a diagnostic or host-approved setting rather than an automatic optimization.
Isolate plugins and theme code
Plugins that optimize, resize, watermark, scan, or secure uploads can change the request after WordPress receives it. To isolate them:
- Take a current backup and note which plugins are active.
- Deactivate all plugins temporarily.
- Upload the same test image.
- If it succeeds, reactivate plugins one at a time, testing after each activation.
- When the error returns, leave the responsible plugin disabled while checking its settings, compatibility notes, and logs with its developer.
- If the error remains with every plugin disabled, switch briefly to a current default WordPress theme and test again. Restore the original theme after the test.
Image-optimization and security plugins are frequent suspects because they process files during or immediately after upload, but any plugin that hooks attachment creation can be involved. Do not permanently leave unrelated security controls disabled just to make uploads work.
Test mod_security and other security layers safely
Web application firewalls can reject multipart upload requests or image contents before WordPress receives them. If your host provides a mod_security toggle, disable it only long enough to repeat one controlled upload, preferably on a staging copy or during a quiet maintenance window.

- If the upload works only with the rule disabled, re-enable the protection immediately.
- Give the host the timestamp, requested filename, and any request ID from the browser or server log.
- Ask for a narrow whitelist or rule adjustment for the WordPress upload endpoint instead of a site-wide exemption.
The same approach applies to a reverse proxy, malware scanner, CDN upload rule, or hosting firewall. A successful test proves interference, not that the security product should be removed.
Verify the Media path and filesystem access
Open Settings > Media and inspect the upload-location setting if your WordPress version and host expose it. An incorrect custom path can send files to a directory that does not exist or is not writable. Restoring the default uploads path is a useful test when a custom path was configured in the past.
The web-server user must be able to create the year/month subdirectories and write the original and generated image files. Ask the host to verify ownership and permissions from the server side rather than applying broad, unsafe permissions yourself. Also check available disk quota and inode quota; a full account can present as an image-processing failure.
Changing to a currently supported PHP version can resolve extension and compatibility defects, but do it through the host’s documented process, after a backup and compatibility check. PHP, ImageMagick, and WordPress versions change independently, so a setting that worked on an older stack may not be valid after an upgrade.

A very large pixel dimension times out
Image work scales with pixel count, not only compressed file size. A 3000 × 4000 image can require substantially more memory and processing time than a smaller file even when both are JPEGs. A 2016 Trac report recorded a 30-second maximum-execution-time error for 3000 × 4000 images while 2250 × 3000 images uploaded successfully. Treat that as one environment’s observation: reduce dimensions for a diagnostic test, then have the host check execution time and Imagick resource limits rather than assuming those dimensions are a universal cutoff.
Photoshop or other embedded metadata triggers the failure
A shared-host support case attributed failures to ImageMagick handling of Photoshop metadata; stripping metadata or switching to GD resolved that case. To test it, export a copy with metadata removed and retain the original locally for archival purposes. If the clean copy succeeds, ask the host whether its ImageMagick policy or version has a known metadata limitation. The single report is not proof that all Photoshop files are unsafe.

The server says it cannot process the image
One support thread reported that increasing memory to 256 MB and the upload allowance to 1 GB did not help, while using smaller images did. The advice in that case was to keep the longest side around 2,560 pixels. This is a practical workaround for oversized assets, not a WordPress rule: your site may process larger or smaller images depending on PHP memory, editor, format, and host policy.
Use FTP and WP-CLI only as a recovery path
If the browser route remains blocked but you have SSH access, you can place the file in a server directory with FTP or SFTP and register it with WP-CLI. The relevant command is wp media import; a typical pattern is:

- Run the command from the WordPress installation directory as the correct system user.
- Confirm that the attachment appears in the Media Library and that the required intermediate sizes were generated.
- If import fails with the same editor or memory error, FTP has only bypassed the browser; the server-side image problem still needs repair.
WP-CLI syntax, permissions, and available commands depend on the installation and host. Do not copy files directly into wp-content/uploads and expect WordPress to create attachment records automatically; registration is the purpose of the import command.
When to escalate to your host
Contact hosting support when local changes do not explain the failure, when a host cap overrides your settings, or when you cannot inspect server logs. Include:
- the exact time of a failed request and the site’s timezone;
- the image format, dimensions, file size, and whether a renamed or reduced copy works;
- whether GD or Imagick was active;
- the effective PHP
memory_limitandmax_execution_time, if visible; - the result of the plugin/theme and security-layer tests; and
- any PHP fatal error, ImageMagick message, mod_security rule ID, or web-server status from the logs.
Ask the host specifically to check PHP-FPM or Apache error logs, ImageMagick policy and resource limits, directory ownership, disk and inode quotas, and firewall events. Hosts can raise limits or change extension configuration that cannot be overridden from WordPress.
Prevent the error on future uploads
- Resize camera originals to the pixel dimensions your site actually displays before uploading; keep the original in separate storage.
- Export web copies with standard filenames and remove unnecessary metadata when a workflow repeatedly produces failures.
- Keep WordPress, PHP, the active image editor, and image-related plugins on versions supported together by your host.
- After a PHP or ImageMagick change, test one small JPEG, one PNG, and one representative large image in a staging site.
- Document the working editor and effective PHP limits so a host migration does not silently change them.
- Keep backups of
wp-config.php,.htaccess, and theme or plugin files before applying configuration tests.
The reliable sequence is to establish whether the failure follows one file or every file, identify the active editor, verify PHP limits and filesystem access, isolate extensions and security layers, and then use host logs to correct the underlying server configuration. A smaller image or GD can restore publishing quickly, but a persistent error should be fixed at the layer that is generating it.
