The fastest, lowest-risk fix is to open Divi → Support Center → Safe Mode and reload the Builder. Safe Mode temporarily turns off third-party plugins, the child theme, and custom code for your administrator session. If the Builder loads, a conflict is responsible; turn Safe Mode off and reactivate each component individually. If it still times out, use the Support Center system status and full report to check PHP version, memory, execution time, input limits, upload limits, caches, permalinks, and HTTPS settings.
What the Divi Builder timeout warning means
A timeout means the Builder did not complete its loading request before the server or browser stopped waiting. Elegant Themes describes it as occurring “when the Divi Builder fails to load due to an error” (August 8, 2024). The message does not identify one specific defect. A conflicting plugin, child-theme code, custom integration, incompatible PHP version, exhausted PHP memory, restrictive execution limits, stale cache, malformed rewrite rules, or an HTTPS mismatch can all produce the same symptom.
This distinction matters: changing Divi settings cannot repair a server limit, and increasing a server limit will not remove a JavaScript error caused by a plugin. Start with the reversible, per-user test below, then move toward site-wide changes only when the evidence points to the server.
1. Run the Safe Mode test first
Safe Mode is the quickest way to separate a compatibility problem from a hosting problem. It affects only the logged-in administrator session, so visitors continue to see the normal site.

- Sign in to WordPress with an administrator account.
- Open Divi → Support Center.
- Switch Safe Mode on.
- Open the page in the Visual Builder or Backend Builder again, preferably in a private browser window.
- Record whether the Builder loads, loads slowly, or shows the same timeout.
Safe Mode disables third-party plugins, the active child theme, and custom code for your session. It does not permanently deactivate anything and it does not change what anonymous visitors receive.
If the Builder works in Safe Mode
The timeout is almost certainly caused by one of the components Safe Mode bypassed. Turn Safe Mode off, then isolate the offender rather than leaving the entire site disabled:

- Reactivate one plugin and test the Builder.
- Continue, one plugin at a time, until the warning returns.
- When you identify the trigger, update it, review its settings, or ask its developer for a compatibility fix.
- If every plugin passes, activate the child theme and test again.
- Finally, restore custom snippets in Divi → Theme Options → Integration one block at a time.
Keep a short log of the activation order and result. If two plugins are individually harmless but fail together, the last two activated form the conflict pair; test that pair on a staging copy before changing production.
If Safe Mode does not help
A timeout that remains in Safe Mode points away from third-party code and toward PHP resources, the web server, WordPress core or Divi files, URL configuration, or a cache layer. Continue with the system report and hosting checks instead of repeatedly deactivating plugins.
2. Read Divi’s Support Center report
In Divi → Support Center, expand System Status and generate the full report. It provides the versions and PHP directives that determine whether the Builder can finish its requests.

- PHP version and loaded extensions
- PHP memory limit and maximum execution time
- Maximum input time and input-variable count
- Upload and POST size limits
- WordPress, Divi, theme, and plugin versions
- Server and WordPress URL information
Save the report before contacting your host. A support technician can act on exact values far faster than on a screenshot of the warning.

Elegant Themes recommends PHP 8.0 or newer. Its published minimum optimal directives are shown below. The values are limits for each PHP request, not guarantees that the server has unlimited CPU or RAM.

Elegant Themes’ 2025 hosting guidance separately calls for at least 128 MB of PHP memory and a 120-second PHP execution limit. Those figures describe minimum guidance; a host may impose additional web-server, proxy, or account-level limits.
How to change the values safely
- Check the current values in Divi’s report and in your hosting control panel’s PHP settings.
- Use the host’s PHP-version selector to choose PHP 8.0 or a newer supported release. Confirm that your plugins and custom code support that release before switching a production site.
- Set the six directives to at least the values in the table. Some panels expose them under MultiPHP INI Editor, PHP Options, or a similarly named tool.
- Save the change, wait for the host to reload PHP, and regenerate the Divi report.
- Clear caches, then test the Builder in a fresh private window.
If the panel will not permit a change, do not keep editing random configuration files. Send the host the exact directives and requested values. WordPress specifically advises contacting the hosting provider when maximum execution time must be changed. Ask the host to confirm whether a reverse proxy, web-server timeout, container quota, or account memory cap is lower than the PHP value.
Document the old and new values, the date, and who made the change. Raising limits can increase resource consumption on an undersized account, so monitor error logs and site responsiveness after the adjustment.

4. Update WordPress, Divi, themes, and plugins
Compatibility fixes often arrive in updates, while an incomplete update can leave corrupted files. Make a backup before changing versions, then update WordPress core, the Divi theme and Builder, the child theme, and plugins from the normal WordPress update screens. Keep the PHP version within the support range published by your host and by the software vendors.
After each update group, open the Builder and note the result. If the warning begins immediately after one update, roll back that component on a staging copy or restore the backup, then report the reproducible combination to its developer. Do not run an old plugin indefinitely on a public site simply because it avoids the warning; an unsupported component can create security and compatibility problems.
5. Clear every relevant cache layer
A cached failed response can make a repaired Builder appear broken. Purge layers in an order that lets you identify which one was stale:
- Clear the browser cache or use a private window.
- Purge the WordPress caching or optimization plugin.
- Purge any CDN or reverse-proxy cache.
- Ask the host to clear server-side page, object, or opcode caches when those are managed outside WordPress.
- Regenerate Divi’s static CSS files if that option is available in your Divi settings.
Test while logged in and while logged out. A cache rule that incorrectly stores authenticated requests can break the Builder for administrators even though the public homepage looks normal.
6. Test permalinks when normal troubleshooting fails
WordPress rewrite rules can prevent Builder requests from reaching the expected endpoint. This is a diagnostic test, not a recommendation to leave a production site on plain URLs.

- Open Settings → Permalinks.
- Select Plain and click Save Changes.
- Clear the relevant caches and retry the Builder.
- If the warning disappears, return to Settings → Permalinks and restore the site’s intended structure, then save again.
- Re-test. If the error returns, have the host check rewrite rules and the web-server configuration.
Changing the structure can affect existing links, so perform this test during a maintenance window or on staging when possible.
7. Verify both WordPress URLs use HTTPS
Open Settings → General and compare WordPress Address (URL) with Site Address (URL). Both should use the correct protocol and hostname for the live site, normally https:// after SSL has been installed.
An SSL installation added after content was published can leave mixed or inconsistent protocols in generated requests. If the addresses disagree, correct them only after confirming the canonical hostname with your host or site administrator. A qualified administrator should assess whether an SSL-rewriting plugin such as Really Simple SSL is appropriate; do not install one blindly on a site that already has proxy or server-level HTTPS rules.
After correcting the URLs, clear browser, plugin, CDN, and server caches and check the browser’s developer console for blocked HTTP requests. A secure-page warning or repeated redirect is evidence of a URL/proxy problem rather than a PHP timeout.

- Run WordPress’s file verification or reinstall the same WordPress version from the dashboard, after making a backup.
- Reinstall the current Divi package from a trusted vendor download if its files appear incomplete.
- Inspect the PHP error log and web-server log at the exact time of a failed Builder request.
- Look for fatal errors, memory exhaustion, upstream timeouts, blocked REST requests, or permission errors.
- Ask the host whether a firewall or security rule is blocking authenticated REST or admin-ajax requests.
Do not delete the wp-content directory or overwrite a child theme without a backup. If logs show a specific function or plugin file, give that detail to the responsible developer instead of raising limits indefinitely.
Choose the fix that matches the evidence

A practical escalation sequence
Use this order so each step narrows the cause without creating new variables:

- Run Divi Safe Mode and record the result.
- If Safe Mode works, isolate plugins, child theme, and Integration code one at a time.
- If it fails, save the Divi System Status report and compare PHP values with the recommended minimums.
- Update WordPress, Divi, themes, and plugins after confirming backup and compatibility.
- Purge browser, WordPress, CDN, and server caches.
- Test Plain permalinks, then restore the intended structure.
- Verify matching HTTPS WordPress and Site Address values.
- Review PHP and web-server logs; give the host the timestamps, report, and failed URL.
Stop changing settings once the Builder works and reproduce the successful state on staging. Unrelated simultaneous changes make the next failure harder to diagnose.
Preventing the warning from returning
- Keep PHP, WordPress, Divi, themes, and plugins on supported versions.
- Review the Divi Support Center report after major updates or a hosting migration.
- Maintain at least the published PHP memory, execution, input, upload, and POST limits, subject to your host’s account constraints.
- Use staging for plugin, child-theme, and custom-code changes.
- Keep a record of PHP settings, cache layers, URL configuration, and recent deployments.
- Monitor PHP and web-server logs instead of relying only on the visual timeout message.
- Ensure CDN and security rules allow authenticated WordPress REST and admin requests.
The warning is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Safe Mode identifies the most common conflicts without affecting visitors; the system report and host-side checks identify resource and server limits; URL, permalink, cache, and file checks cover the remaining common paths. Following that sequence gives you a documented, reversible fix instead of a collection of untested changes.
