The DayZ WaitAuthPlayerLoginState message, usually shown with error code 0x00040031, means the game is stuck while authenticating your player account. It can prevent connection to every server, and the fault may be on your computer, Steam, a server, or an account/network path.
There is no confirmed official fix identified for this error. Work through the low-risk checks first: confirm that Steam is online, restart Steam and the DayZ launcher, and test Discord and other overlays. Only then move to file verification, mod reinstallation, Steam Cloud choices, or deletion of local profile data.

What the DayZ WaitAuthPlayerLoginState error means
WaitAuthPlayerLoginState is an authentication-stage failure. The numeric form is 0x00040031; one Bohemia Interactive tracker entry uses the typo-style title 0x0004031 for what appears to be the same issue. The visible symptom is a login that never completes, followed by an inability to join any server.
Authentication involves more than the DayZ executable. Steam must be signed in and able to complete its session checks, the launcher must pass the request correctly, and the destination server must be available and able to validate the account. A local overlay, damaged update file, mod mismatch, stale profile data, or a temporary account or network problem can therefore produce the same message.

Because the same error can have different causes, a workaround that helps one player is not proof of a universal solution. The community steps below come from player reports and search-result summaries; they have not been confirmed as official fixes, and the dates of the underlying discussions are not established.

Choose the safest troubleshooting order
Start with actions that do not alter files or settings. The table shows why the sequence matters.

1. Check service status and your Steam connection
Look for maintenance or a server-side failure
Before changing your installation, check whether DayZ servers are undergoing maintenance or experiencing an outage. The authentication error can appear even when no outage has been announced, so an apparently normal status does not rule out a server-side problem. If only one server fails while others accept you, treat that as a server-specific issue and contact that server’s administrators rather than deleting local files.
Make sure Steam is online
Open Steam and confirm it is not in Offline Mode. A DayZ launch can look normal while Steam is unable to complete the account handshake. Bring Steam online, allow it to finish any pending update or cloud synchronization, and then try DayZ again.
2. Fully restart Steam, the launcher and DayZ
- Exit DayZ.
- Close the DayZ launcher.
- Exit Steam rather than leaving only the window minimized. Wait for Steam to finish any visible cloud synchronization.
- Start Steam again and sign in.
- Launch DayZ through the launcher and test a server.
One DayZ forum participant reported that closing the game and launcher, waiting for Steam Cloud synchronization, and relaunching resolved the problem in about 80% of attempts for that person. That is an anecdotal experience, not a measured success rate, so do not treat it as a guarantee.
Another player reported that relaunching Steam and signing in again removed the error. If a normal restart does not help, continue with the next steps instead of repeatedly launching the game in the same stale session.
3. Test Discord and other overlays
Start Discord with administrator rights
Several community guides and players identify Discord as a frequent trigger. Close DayZ and Discord completely, then start Discord by right-clicking its shortcut and choosing Run as administrator. Once Discord is running, launch DayZ and test the connection.
Disable the Discord overlay
If administrator mode helps, disable the Discord overlay before trying again. In Discord, open User Settings, find the overlay controls, and turn off the in-game overlay for DayZ (or disable it globally). The aim is to prevent the overlay from attaching to the game during authentication.
Temporarily disable graphics-card overlays
Player reports also associate similar login conflicts with graphics-card or performance overlays. Turn those overlays off temporarily, close their companion applications, and retry. Re-enable them one at a time after DayZ works so you can identify a conflict without changing several variables at once.

4. Verify DayZ’s files in Steam
An interrupted update or damaged file can prevent the launcher from reaching the authentication stage correctly. Steam’s verification process compares the installed files with the expected depot and downloads replacements when needed.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click DayZ and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, allow any replacements to download, then restart the launcher and test again.
Verification addresses the game installation; it does not repair a server outage, a Steam account session, or a broken local profile. If Steam reports that files were reacquired, let the download complete before launching.
5. Sign out of Steam and restart the computer
A Bohemia Interactive feedback report describes a case in which a long-running Steam session was suspected of causing the failure. Sign out of Steam, restart Windows, sign back in, and launch DayZ only after Steam has completed its startup work. This resets more of the session state than closing the game alone, while leaving your files and settings intact.
6. Repair mods and test your player name on modded servers
Reinstall the server’s mods
If the error occurs only when joining a modded server, unsubscribe from or uninstall the required mods, restart Steam, and install them again from the server’s instructions. A mismatched or incomplete mod set can block the connection before the server accepts the player.

Try a different in-game name
Some players report that certain servers reject a generic name such as survivor. Change the character or profile name to a normal, unique name and try the same server again. This is a server-specific report, not a documented global DayZ rule, so it is most useful when unmodded servers work but one community server does not.
7. Handle a Steam Cloud conflict carefully
One player associated the error with Steam presenting a choice between local and cloud save states and selecting the older cloud copy. If Steam displays a synchronization conflict, read both timestamps and choose the state that contains your current data. If the first choice reproduces the error, testing the other state is a possible workaround.
Cloud selection can replace local progress or settings. Back up any important local files before choosing, and do not repeatedly alternate between copies without noting which one is current. This step is relevant only when Steam actually presents a conflict; it is not a reason to delete saves preemptively.

8. Clear local DayZ profile and cache data only after backing up
Some players gradually remove local folders named DayZ, DayZ Launcher, and Bohemia_Interactive from AppData, or delete the DayZ player-profile file. The theory is that a corrupt local setting or profile is preventing authentication.
This is a destructive troubleshooting step. It can erase graphics settings, launcher preferences, key bindings, server history, and other local configuration. Before changing anything:

- Copy the relevant folders and profile files to a separate backup location.
- Delete or rename one item at a time rather than wiping every folder at once.
- Launch DayZ after each change so you know which action affected the result.
- Restore the backup if the problem remains or your settings are unexpectedly lost.
Because the reported locations and filenames vary by setup, use Windows’ AppData folders and the names above as search terms rather than assuming a single universal path. Do not remove files while the game or Steam is still running.
9. Determine whether the cause follows your account or network
A feedback report describes a player who could log in from a different computer in a different country but not from the original setup. That observation points toward a machine, network route, or account-specific condition rather than a universal client defect.
If possible, test the same Steam account on another computer and, separately, another network. Keep the test controlled: use the same server, avoid changing mods at the same time, and note whether the alternate setup reaches the server. A successful alternate login does not identify the exact fault, but it tells you where to focus:
- Works elsewhere, fails only on your PC: concentrate on overlays, files, local profile data, and the Steam installation.
- Works on your PC but not one network: investigate the network route or account access with the server and Steam support.
- Fails everywhere: suspect a broader service, account, or server-side issue and check the official tracker before making destructive local changes.
When to stop troubleshooting and report it
If the error persists after a clean Steam restart, online-mode check, overlay test, file verification, and a controlled server test, document the failure instead of repeatedly deleting data. Include:
- The exact label, WaitAuthPlayerLoginState, and code 0x00040031.
- Whether every server fails or only one server.
- Whether the server is vanilla or modded, and which mod set is involved.
- Your Windows and DayZ versions, Steam status, and whether Steam Cloud showed a conflict.
- Which steps changed the behavior, including whether another computer or network worked.
- Approximate time of failure and any maintenance notice visible then.
Post the report to the Bohemia Interactive feedback tracker entries T163465 and T170994, checking for duplicate reports and current developer status first. No official fix was identified in the available material, and the age of the community discussions is unknown, so label workarounds as observations rather than confirmed solutions.
