Godlike.Host offers hosted DayZ servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
DayZ authentication errors are usually caused by a server that is unavailable, a connection that cannot complete the login handshake, or stale files and session data on your device. Check the server first, then restart your network and Steam, and finally repair the local installation. The exact code matters: 0x00040031 is commonly shown as WaitAuthPlayerLoginState, while 0x000400e1 is another authentication-related code with a different likely cause.
What the DayZ authentication error means
DayZ must authenticate your account with the game service and the server you are joining before it can place your character in a session. An error means that this exchange did not finish. It does not necessarily mean that your Steam password, DayZ account or character is invalid.

- Server-side: the destination server or its authentication service is offline, restarting or overloaded.
- Network-side: your router, internet connection, Wi-Fi interference, packet loss or unusually high latency prevents the login request from completing.
- Client-side: Steam, DayZ, BattlEye or local configuration data has become stale or corrupted.
There is no official Bohemia Interactive support article that documents a universal fix for this error. The procedures below are community-reported remedies, so treat them as a troubleshooting sequence rather than an official diagnosis.

Record the exact message and code first
Before changing anything, take a screenshot or write down the complete error, including its hexadecimal code. Also note your platform, whether you were joining an official or community server, and the game build shown by the launcher. Similar-looking messages can have different causes.

The wording in the table is not a formal error-code specification. It reflects what the cited community discussions, a hosting guide and the Bohemia feedback tracker associate with each symptom.

Start with changes that affect the fewest files and take the least time. After each step, launch DayZ and test the same server once. If it fails again, continue to the next step rather than repeating the same login attempt indefinitely.
1. Check the server before changing your PC
Try a different DayZ server, preferably one with a different host or region. If other servers work, your account and installation are probably able to authenticate and the original server is the more likely source of the failure. If every server fails, continue with the connection and client checks.
For 0x000400e1, a Nitrado troubleshooting guide lists a server being down as a primary cause. Server restarts, maintenance and authentication-service outages are outside your control; waiting for the operator is the correct action when only one server is affected.
2. Restart the router and test the connection
- Exit DayZ and Steam.
- Unplug the router or gateway from power.
- Wait at least 30 seconds, reconnect it, and allow the internet connection to return fully.
- Reconnect the PC and try DayZ again.
Hosting guidance describes a throttled or offline connection as a cause of an unexpected authentication error. A 2026 third-party guide also recommends a wired Ethernet connection where possible and associates Wi-Fi instability and high ping with timeouts. Those are practical suggestions, not measured guarantees: use Ethernet as a test, not as proof that Wi-Fi is inherently incompatible with DayZ.

Pause downloads, cloud synchronisation and video streams while testing. If the error occurs only on one network, compare the result with a trusted alternative connection to separate a home-network problem from a server or client problem.
3. Close and relaunch DayZ, the launcher and Steam
A normal window close may leave Steam or the game process holding an old session token. Use this complete sequence:
- Quit DayZ and wait for it to disappear from Steam’s running status.
- Close the DayZ launcher if it remains open.
- Exit Steam from the Steam menu, not only by closing the window.
- Open Task Manager and end a still-running DayZ, launcher or Steam process only if you are certain it belongs to the closed game.
- Start Steam again, wait for it to finish connecting, and launch DayZ.
A player workaround reported in a Steam discussion used this order—game, launcher, then Steam—to clear stale authentication and session state. It is low-cost and does not change your installation.
4. Sign out of Steam and restart the PC
If a full relaunch does not help, sign out of Steam, restart Windows, then sign back in and launch DayZ. A user report on the Bohemia feedback tracker describes this sequence resolving an authentication problem. It is an individual report, not an officially confirmed fix, but it resets more session state than simply reopening the game.

5. Verify DayZ’s files in Steam
Use Steam’s integrity check before deleting anything:
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click DayZ and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish. If Steam downloads replacements, allow it to complete before launching DayZ.
This repairs missing or altered installation files without removing your entire game. Close DayZ while the check runs. If you use mods, remember that file verification may restore official files while leaving a separate mod or server mismatch unresolved.

6. Reset DayZ’s local data after disabling Steam Cloud
Use this step only after restarting and verifying files. It removes local configuration and cache data, so settings may return to defaults.
- In Steam, open DayZ’s Properties and find the Steam Cloud option.
- Temporarily disable Steam Cloud for DayZ.
- Exit Steam completely.
- Open File Explorer and navigate to
DocumentsDayZ. - Delete or rename that
DayZfolder. Renaming it to something such asDayZ-backuppreserves a copy if you need to restore files. - Restart Steam, verify DayZ’s files again using the procedure above, and launch the game.
The order matters. The 2026 guide that recommends this reset says to disable Steam Cloud first; otherwise Steam can restore the same problematic local data. Re-enable Cloud only after you have confirmed that the game can authenticate and you no longer need the backup.

Security software can block a game executable or BattlEye after an update. Add allowances for DayZ and BattlEye in your firewall and antivirus, then retry. Use the products’ normal “allow an app” or exception controls rather than disabling protection permanently. If your computer is managed by an organisation, you may need an administrator to make the change.
When testing, change one security setting at a time and restore it if it does not affect the error. A successful login after an exception indicates a local rule problem; it does not establish that every authentication failure is caused by antivirus software.
8. Run Steam with administrator rights
Nitrado’s guide suggests running Steam as administrator when the account has administrator rights. Right-click the Steam shortcut, choose Run as administrator, then start DayZ and test once. If this changes nothing, close Steam and return to normal operation; permanently elevating the launcher is not required for most installations.
9. Close overlays and background utilities
Players have reported fewer authentication problems after closing background programs such as Discord or Nvidia software. The available evidence is anecdotal, and a later Steam commenter disputed the idea that Discord is a confirmed trigger for WaitAuthPlayerLoginState. Treat this as a low-confidence isolation test:

- Exit overlays and hardware-monitoring tools.
- Disable only the overlay feature first, rather than uninstalling the application.
- Launch DayZ and test.
- Restore the programs if the result is unchanged.
What to do for “already in the target session”
This message normally means the server has not released the previous session yet. The 2026 guide calls waiting a few minutes and then rejoining the most reliable response. Do not click Join repeatedly during that interval; each attempt can make it harder to tell whether the old session has expired.
If waiting does not clear it, quit DayZ and Steam completely, restart Steam, and try once more. One Steam commenter said that dying on the server, logging out and logging back in cleared the message, but that is an individual, low-confidence report and is not a dependable procedure. You should never deliberately risk a character merely to test an authentication workaround.
When the problem is probably server-side
- Only one server produces the error while several others accept your login.
- The server is restarting, missing from the browser or reported offline by its operator.
- Other players report the same timeout or database message at the same time.
- Your installation passes verification and the error persists across more than one device or network.
For a temporary database or login timeout, a December 2024 discussion describes success after two or three retries. That is not evidence of a guaranteed retry count; make a small number of attempts, then wait or choose another server instead of hammering the login endpoint.
Platform-specific limits
PC through Steam
PC players have the complete repair path: Steam restart, file verification, local-data reset, firewall checks and administrator testing. Record the DayZ build number from the launcher when reporting the issue.

Xbox and PlayStation 5
The available material does not independently document a console-specific file-verification procedure. If you are on a console, use the platform-appropriate equivalents: wait for a possible server outage, fully quit and restart DayZ, reboot the console, restart the router and check for game updates. Reinstallation is a last resort because it takes longer and does not fix a server-side outage. Do not assume that a PC-only instruction such as deleting DocumentsDayZ applies to a console.
Mods and build mismatches
Community servers can require a particular mod set and build. A 2022 forum discussion suggested unsubscribing from mods before verifying files, but this is weakly sourced and can remove content you need for a server. If the launcher reports that the client is newer than the server, first let Steam finish all updates and then confirm that the server operator has updated the server. A discussion report says the mismatch disappeared after the server update; it does not show that reinstalling the client would have helped.

For a modded server, test an official or unmodded server after the basic restart and file check. If that works, the authentication service itself is probably reachable and the remaining issue is more likely the community server’s build or mod configuration.
Last resort: reinstall only after isolating the cause
Reinstalling DayZ can replace damaged program files, but it cannot repair an unavailable server, a blocked network or an expired session on the host. Use it only when:
- multiple servers fail after a complete Steam and PC restart;
- file verification repeatedly reports or replaces files;
- the local-data reset and security checks make no difference; and
- you have confirmed that other players can connect and your network works for other services.
Before uninstalling, keep any backup of DocumentsDayZ that contains settings you may want later. After reinstalling, launch once without adding mods, then test authentication before restoring custom content.
How to report an unresolved authentication error
If none of the steps works, report the problem to the DayZ feedback tracker or the official forums. Include information that lets others distinguish a server incident from a client fault:
- the exact text and hexadecimal code, such as
0x00040031or0x000400e1; - the
WaitAuthPlayerLoginStatelabel, if shown; - PC, Xbox or PlayStation 5, plus the operating-system version where relevant;
- the DayZ build number and whether the server was official or community-run;
- the server name and region, without posting private account credentials;
- the time of the failure and your time zone;
- whether another server, another network or a wired connection changed the result; and
- which repairs you completed, especially Steam restart, file verification and the local-data reset.
Do not publish your Steam password, authentication codes, private IP address or full log files if they contain personal information. An exact code, platform and build gives the tracker or server operator far more useful information than “DayZ will not let me in.”
