If Copilot is missing from Edge or will not open, first check that you are selecting the Copilot icon in the browser toolbar—not an app in the separate Edge sidebar—and that you are using the intended Edge profile. Then update and restart Edge. If the pane still fails, use the checks below to distinguish an Edge problem, a connection blocker, and a work-account policy restriction.
First, make sure you are opening the right feature
Copilot in Edge opens from the Copilot icon in the upper-right browser toolbar. It is separate from the list of apps that can appear in Edge’s sidebar, sometimes called App Tower. Microsoft says that the sidebar app list is being retired gradually, but Copilot and the side pane are not affected by that change. The app-list rollout has no confirmed retirement date. Microsoft explains the distinction between the sidebar app list and Copilot.
- Open a page in Edge and select the Copilot icon in the upper-right toolbar.
- Check that Edge is using the profile you intend to use. Microsoft’s getting-started instructions describe signing in to Edge with a personal Microsoft account for the personal-account setup.
- If you cannot see the icon, look through the current toolbar and Settings and more (…) > Copilot and AI. The wording and placement may vary by Edge release, account type, or organization policy, so a particular toggle is not guaranteed to be available in every setup.

When the toolbar icon is present but the pane does not open or behaves incorrectly, start with general browser maintenance. These are Microsoft’s general Edge troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed Copilot-specific fixes.

- In Edge, select Settings and more (…) > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Install any update Edge offers.
- Close and reopen Edge, then try the Copilot icon again.

If Edge itself is malfunctioning
If Edge crashes, pages fail to load, or content displays incorrectly, address the browser issue before treating it as a Copilot-only problem.

- Crashes or slowdowns: Close unnecessary tabs and temporarily disable extensions you do not need, then test Edge again.
- Display problems: Microsoft says clearing browsing data can sometimes resolve page-display issues. This is a general browser check, not a promise that it will restore Copilot.
- Persistent malfunction on Windows: Open Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Microsoft Edge > Modify > Repair and follow the prompts. Microsoft says Repair should not affect browser data or settings.
If Copilot cannot connect
When the pane opens but cannot connect, Windows Get Help provides a Copilot connectivity troubleshooter that checks firewall rules and other possible blockers. Find it on Microsoft’s Copilot troubleshooters page. That page also describes a license troubleshooter for Copilot icons in eligible Microsoft 365 apps; Microsoft does not identify it as a fix for the Edge pane.
If Edge itself cannot update or connect, network settings, VPN interference, or organization-blocked endpoints can affect Edge downloads and updates. That guidance concerns Edge installation and updating; it does not establish that a VPN is the cause of a Copilot sidebar failure. For a work-managed Edge profile, check with IT
On a device or account managed by an organization, administrators can control the Copilot in Edge experience. If the feature is missing, a setting is unavailable, or behavior differs from a personal profile, ask your organization’s IT team to check the applicable account eligibility, tenant policy, and managed network restrictions. Depending on the prompt and settings, Copilot may use context such as the current page, its title, open tabs, or browser history. To control whether it can use web context, open the Edge toolbar’s More (…) > Copilot and AI settings and switch off Allow Copilot to read context clues on the web. This changes access to browsing context; it is not a troubleshooting switch for a missing or unresponsive pane. Details are in Microsoft’s Copilot in Edge guide.
