Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The fastest reliable fix is to treat Error querying server mods as a mod-download or host-connection problem, not as a player port-forwarding problem. Start the ASA server once with the entire -mods argument removed. If it starts, verify every ID is a CurseForge project ID, launch with comma-separated IDs such as -mods=123456,789012, test one known-good mod, and then add the rest one at a time. The exact suffix—serverUnreachable, HTTP 400, HTTP 404, or a disk-library error—determines the next check.
What the error means
ARK: Survival Ascended (ASA) dedicated servers obtain mods from CurseForge when they start. The official ASA server configuration uses the -mods launch argument followed by CurseForge Mod Project IDs. Those mods are checked and updated automatically during startup. This is different from ARK: Survival Evolved (ASE), whose older Steam Workshop instructions are not the right configuration for ASA.
serverUnreachable is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. The server may be unable to reach the external mod service, or it may be unable to load its local mod library after a failed or incomplete download. A typical log can contain both Couldn't load mods library from disk and Error querying server mods: APIError: Failed (serverUnreachable). HTTP 400 and HTTP 404 indicate different request or mod-availability problems, so copy the complete console line before changing settings.
Prepare safely before changing the mod list
- Stop the server cleanly and make a backup of the save, configuration files, and current startup command.
- Copy the complete error line, including the status suffix, mod ID, and mod name. A shortened screenshot is often missing the detail needed to choose the correct branch.
- Record the exact mod list and its order. Do not delete downloaded data until you have preserved the logs.
- Confirm that you can edit the actual startup command used by the service or host panel; changing an unused shortcut will have no effect.
Use this isolation sequence
Run the checks in order. Each restart should be allowed to finish far enough for the console to show whether the mod query succeeds.
#1 Best Overall

- Prove the base server starts. Remove the entire
-mods=...argument and launch once. If the unmodded server starts, the map process and basic installation are working; concentrate on IDs, mod retrieval, the local mod library, or a mod-related host setting. - Check every ID at its source. Open the ASA version of each project and copy its CurseForge project ID. Do not substitute an ASE Steam Workshop ID, a display name, or an ID copied from an old configuration guide.
- Restore the documented syntax. Use one argument with comma-separated numeric IDs and no spaces:
-mods=123456,789012. Keep the argument on the server’s launch line, not in a client-only mod list. - Simplify the command. Temporarily remove unrelated launch options and custom arguments. Retry with one known-good ASA mod so a malformed option cannot obscure the result.
- Isolate the failing entry. Remove the newest or recently changed IDs, restart, and add them back individually. When the error returns, the last entry is the first suspect. An unavailable project, an ID for the wrong game, or a deleted/hidden project can all fail at this point.
- Match the exact status. Treat
serverUnreachable, HTTP 400, and HTTP 404 as separate branches. The corrective action for a missing project is not the same as the action for a blocked HTTPS request. - Test the host’s outbound connection. From the machine running the server, verify DNS resolution, outbound HTTPS access, certificate validity, and firewall or proxy rules. This is an outbound dependency; player port forwarding only controls incoming connections to your game server.
- Check resources and local storage. Confirm free disk space, write permissions for the server’s mod-data directory, and sufficient memory. Every mod adds startup work and memory use, and a large stack can exceed a host plan’s limits.
- Restart after every configuration change. ASA reads the mod list at startup. Editing the list while the process is running does not apply it to the current session.
Configure ASA mods with the correct IDs and argument
Use CurseForge project IDs
ASA’s dedicated-server configuration expects CurseForge Mod Project IDs. A project page may show a human-readable name, but the launch argument must contain the numeric project ID associated with the ASA project. Verify that the project is marked for ASA rather than assuming an identically named ASE project is compatible.
Format the launch argument exactly
The supported form is:
-mods=123456,789012
Separate IDs with commas and do not insert spaces or a second -mods switch for each mod. Keep the argument in the command used to start the dedicated server. If a hosting panel has a dedicated “Mods” field, check how that panel translates it into the command line; do not also append a conflicting hand-written list unless the panel documentation explicitly requires it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTest one project before restoring a stack
A single known-good project provides a clean control. If one mod starts successfully, the basic query path and syntax are probably sound; add the remaining IDs one at a time. If even that project fails, continue with the status-specific network, request, or storage checks rather than adding more entries.

| Console wording | What it usually points to | First actions |
|---|---|---|
APIError: Failed (serverUnreachable) |
The server could not complete the external mod-service request, or a local library failure occurred alongside it. | Check outbound DNS/HTTPS, TLS certificates, firewall/proxy policy, service reachability from the host, and the local mod-data directory. |
Failed to send request ... 400 |
The request or startup configuration was not accepted. | Reduce the command to the documented -mods form, verify separators and IDs, and reintroduce options incrementally. |
Failed to send request ... 404 |
CurseForge did not provide one of the requested mods. | Identify the ID named in the log, verify that the ASA project exists, remove recently added entries, and test again. |
Couldn't load mods library from disk |
The local library may be unreadable, incomplete, corrupt, out of space, or inaccessible to the server account. | Check permissions and free space, preserve logs, and inspect for a partial download before removing anything. |
Fix serverUnreachable
Start with the server host, not the player computer. The dedicated server must make an outbound connection to the mod service during startup. Check these items from that host:
- DNS: Confirm that the host can resolve external names. A failed resolver, captive network, or restrictive DNS policy can look like an application outage.
- Outbound HTTPS: Ensure that firewalls, security groups, and hosting policies allow the server process to establish HTTPS connections. A rule that permits players to connect to the game port does not necessarily permit outbound web requests.
- TLS and certificates: Check the operating system’s date and time, certificate store, and any TLS-intercepting proxy. An expired or untrusted certificate can prevent the request even when ordinary web browsing works.
- Proxy configuration: If the host requires an HTTP or HTTPS proxy, verify that the dedicated-server process is allowed to use it and that credentials or certificate inspection are configured correctly.
- Service availability: Retry after recording the timestamp and full log. Community reports associate this error with connection and certificate symptoms, but no single fix applies to every host.
Do not treat port forwarding as the default remedy. Port forwarding is for inbound player traffic; the mod query is an outbound dependency initiated by the server.
Fix HTTP 400 responses
An HTTP 400 response means the request was not accepted as formed. In ASA, first eliminate command-line ambiguity:

- Keep one verified ASA CurseForge ID in the documented form, for example
-mods=123456. - Check for spaces, duplicated switches, stray punctuation, copied URL text, or an ASE-specific parameter.
- Start the server and read the complete request error.
- If the one-mod command works, restore other options and IDs one at a time until the bad entry or option is identified.
A Steam community report describes 400 failures that stopped after the command configuration and actual CurseForge IDs were corrected. That is useful evidence for checking syntax and IDs, not a guarantee that every 400 has the same cause.
Fix HTTP 404 responses
A 404 in this startup request means CurseForge did not return one of the requested mods. The project may have been removed, renamed, made unavailable for ASA, or represented by the wrong ID.
- Use the ID and name printed immediately before or after the 404 in the console.
- Open the project’s current ASA listing and confirm that it exists and is published for ASA.
- Remove the newest IDs from the command and restart with the last known-good set.
- Add the removed entries individually. The first one that recreates the 404 is the entry to replace or omit.
Do not keep restarting an unchanged list and expect a missing project to become available. A restart is required after edits, but it cannot make a non-existent project resolve.

Repair a local “mods library from disk” failure
When the log says Couldn't load mods library from disk, the server may have retained a partial or corrupt download, lack permission to read or write its mod-data directory, or run out of storage. The available reports document the message but do not establish one universal directory path or a single safe deletion procedure, so use a conservative recovery process.
- Stop the server and preserve the log and configuration backup.
- Check the account that launches the server and verify read/write access to its mod-data directory.
- Check free space on the volume that stores the server and its mod data.
- Look for files whose timestamps match the failed download or whose names indicate a partial transfer.
- Move suspect files to a dated quarantine folder rather than permanently deleting them. If the host panel manages the directory, use its supported “validate,” “repair,” or mod-cache operation instead of editing hidden files.
- Start with one known-good ID. If it downloads and loads, restore the remaining IDs individually.
If the error returns immediately with a clean, verified ID despite adequate space and permissions, revisit the outbound HTTPS and certificate checks; the disk message can occur alongside a failed service request.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not mix ASA settings with ASE-era advice
ActiveMods is documented as a comma-separated setting that controls activation and order in the broader ARK configuration reference. However, the ASA-specific guidance directs dedicated servers to the -mods launch argument and treats older Steam Workshop patterns as obsolete for ASA.
Do not blindly combine an ASA -mods list with legacy switches such as -automanagedmods, old GameModIds entries, or Steam Workshop IDs. Conflicting sources of truth make it difficult to tell whether a failure came from the project, the command, or a host panel’s translation. Use the syntax supported by the server build and your panel, keep one authoritative list, and restart after changing it.

Each mod increases the work performed during startup and consumes memory. A server can therefore run without mods yet fail or be terminated when a large stack is added. Watch the complete startup console for memory growth, download failures, and the point at which the process exits.
- Begin with one mod and record whether startup completes.
- Add entries in small groups only after the previous group starts reliably.
- Leave headroom for the map, players, backups, and the operating system rather than allocating all available memory to mod loading.
- Ensure the mod-data volume has enough space for downloads and temporary files, not merely the final installed size.
- If a managed host stops the process for exceeding a memory limit, reduce the stack or move to a plan with adequate headroom; changing the IDs alone will not remove a resource ceiling.
Self-hosted and managed-server checks
The same ASA syntax applies in either environment, but responsibility for the surrounding controls differs. Use this comparison to decide where to look when the log is inconclusive.
| Control | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Outbound DNS, HTTPS, and TLS | You control the operating system, firewall, proxy, certificate store, and clock. | Ask support whether outbound requests are filtered or TLS-inspected and whether the service is experiencing an outage. |
| Startup command and restarts | Inspect the script, service unit, or shortcut that actually launches the process. | Inspect the panel’s startup parameters and use its restart function after every edit. |
| Console visibility | Read the complete process log, including the mod ID and status. | Use the panel’s full console or downloadable log; do not rely only on a red “stopped” badge. |
| Memory and storage | Measure available RAM and disk space on the machine and volume. | Check the plan’s memory/storage limits and any automatic process-kill policy. |
| Backups and rollback | Schedule and verify your own save and configuration backups. | Confirm retention, restore points, and whether mod-data rollback is supported before clearing a cache. |
| Unavailable mods | You choose a replacement or remove the ID. | Support may confirm service-side availability, but you still need to update the list and restart. |
Verify the fix and prevent a repeat
- Start with no mods once to establish a clean baseline if the server has been unstable.
- Launch with one verified ASA CurseForge ID and wait for the full startup sequence.
- Confirm that the console no longer reports a query or library error and that the process remains running after startup.
- Add the remaining IDs one at a time, recording which change was made before each restart.
- Keep a dated copy of the working command, mod IDs, and successful startup log.
- When updating a mod, change only that entry, restart, and be prepared to remove it if the query begins returning 404 or the server exits during loading.
A server that starts without mods has passed an isolation test; it has not proved that the mod configuration is permanently fixed. The durable solution is a verified ASA ID list, a reachable outbound service path, a readable local library, and enough memory and storage for the selected stack.
