If a TextExpander abbreviation stays on screen, first confirm the TextExpander app is running and expansion is enabled. Then verify the abbreviation exactly, its expansion mode, and whether the problem occurs in every app or only one. Those checks solve the most common failures without reinstalling anything.
The correct next step depends on the symptom: app-specific failures usually involve application scope or group permissions; Chrome and iPhone or iPad require separate setup checks; missing snippets may be a sync problem; and stale or partial output follows a clipboard troubleshooting path.
Why didn’t my snippet expand?
Start by describing exactly what happened. The distinction matters because TextExpander takes a different path for an abbreviation that remains visible, one that works in one application but not another, and one that disappears while inserting incorrect text.
| Symptom | First place to check | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| The abbreviation remains in the field and nothing is inserted | TextExpander running status, expansion enabled, exact abbreviation, and expansion mode | A delimiter such as Space or Tab may be required before expansion |
| The snippet works in one app but not another | Application scope and the snippet group’s app settings | Organization-shared groups also require “Can expand” permission |
| Expansion fails only in Chrome | Extension sign-in, page reload, and extension expansion controls | Reinstall the extension only after the other checks |
| Expansion fails on iPhone or iPad | TextExpander keyboard selection and Allow Full Access | The keyboard must be signed in and allowed to read the snippet library |
| Snippets or recent edits are missing | Web-account state, collapsed groups, and Snippet Activity | Signing out can erase edits that have not synced |
| The abbreviation disappears but output is stale, partial, or wrong | Clipboard behavior and, on Windows, Paste Timeout | Disabling Restore Clipboard replaces previous clipboard contents with the snippet |
Nothing happens: the abbreviation remains in the field
1. Confirm that TextExpander is running
An unchanged abbreviation with no expansion sound can mean that the desktop application is closed. On macOS, open TextExpander from the Applications folder. On Windows, launch it from the Start menu. After it opens, look for its menu-bar control on Mac or system-tray control on Windows.

Use the same menu-bar or system-tray control to verify that expansion is enabled. Also open TextExpander Preferences and check the expansion setting there. If expansion is disabled globally, no abbreviation will trigger even though your snippets and account are present.
2. Match the saved abbreviation exactly
Open the snippet in TextExpander and compare its abbreviation with what you typed. Check every character, including capitalization, punctuation, and any spaces. Test by typing the abbreviation slowly in a plain text field so an accidental extra character does not hide the result.
Determine whether the failure affects one snippet or several. If only one abbreviation fails, inspect that snippet’s spelling, group membership, and content. If every abbreviation fails, focus on the application, expansion setting, account state, or keyboard rather than editing individual snippets.
3. Check Expansion Mode and its delimiter
TextExpander can expand immediately as the abbreviation is completed or wait for a configured delimiter. A delimiter is the character that tells TextExpander the abbreviation is finished, commonly Space or Tab. If your account is set to wait for a delimiter, typing the abbreviation and pausing will appear to do nothing until you press the required key.
- Open TextExpander’s expansion preferences.
- Identify whether the mode is immediate or delimiter-based.
- If a delimiter is configured, type the exact abbreviation followed by that delimiter in a plain text field.
- Test both a normal snippet and, if relevant, a fill-in snippet. A fill-in may require interaction before its final content appears.
Do not change several settings at once. Establishing whether the trigger is immediate or delimiter-based tells you whether the problem is recognition or insertion.
The snippet works in one app but not another
Use a plain-text control test
Try the same abbreviation in a basic editor: TextEdit on Mac or Notepad on Windows. If it expands there but not in the target application, the snippet and desktop installation are probably working. Concentrate on application scope, group settings, or restrictions imposed by the target app.

If it fails in both the plain-text editor and the target app, return to the global checks: launch TextExpander, enable expansion, verify the abbreviation, and confirm the expansion mode.

TextExpander’s expansion preferences can be set to allow expansion in all applications, all applications except selected ones, or only selected applications. A target app can therefore be excluded even when global expansion is enabled.
- Open the expansion preferences.
- Review the application scope selection.
- If the setting uses an exclusion list, remove the affected app from that list.
- If the setting uses an inclusion list, add the affected app.
- Retest the abbreviation in that app and in the plain-text editor.
Snippet groups can have their own application settings. Open the relevant group and check whether its scope overrides the global choice. A group-level restriction explains why one collection of snippets works while another does not in the same program.
Check organization permissions
For a group shared by an organization, verify that your account has Can expand access. TextExpander documents three group permissions: Can expand, Can edit, and Can manage. Editing or managing a group does not remove the need for expansion access; an administrator may have changed your role or the group assignment.
Ask the group owner or administrator to confirm your permission when the snippet is visible in the account but unavailable during typing. This check is especially important when coworkers can use the same shared snippets and only one user cannot.

Chrome-only expansion failures
Chrome uses the TextExpander extension, so a working desktop application does not by itself prove that the browser integration is active.

- Open the TextExpander extension controls in Chrome and verify that the account is signed in.
- If it is already signed in, sign out and sign back in.
- Reload the affected page and test a simple snippet.
- If expansion still fails, open the extension’s Options page and choose Disable Expansion, then Enable Expansion.
- Perform a shift-reload of the page and test again.
Test in a second page or a basic web text field to determine whether the issue is page-specific. Reinstall the extension only after these sign-in, reload, and toggle checks have failed. If the extension still does not expand after reinstalling, contact TextExpander Support and identify the Chrome page or field where the failure occurs.
iPhone or iPad: the keyboard is missing or does not expand
Enable the TextExpander keyboard and Full Access
On iOS or iPadOS, open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards > TextExpander. Select the TextExpander keyboard and turn on Allow Full Access. TextExpander explains the reason in its setup guidance: “Full Access lets TextExpander read your signed-in Snippet library and expand Snippets from the keyboard.”
Return to the TextExpander app and confirm that you are signed in. Give the library time to load before testing. Use a short, plain-text snippet first; a fill-in or heavily formatted snippet can introduce variables unrelated to keyboard setup.

If the keyboard does not appear
- Confirm the TextExpander app is installed.
- Open the iOS keyboard settings path above and choose Add New Keyboard if TextExpander is not listed.
- Select TextExpander and enable Allow Full Access.
- Switch to the TextExpander keyboard in an app with a text field and test a simple abbreviation.
- If the keyboard remains absent, restart the iPhone or iPad and check the keyboard list again.
Do not assume that installing the app automatically adds its keyboard. iOS requires the keyboard to be selected separately, and Full Access is required for the keyboard to read the signed-in snippet library.
Report an unresolved mobile problem
When the keyboard is selected, Full Access is enabled, and snippets have loaded but expansion still fails, send a problem report from TextExpander’s Help menu. Include the app in which you tested, what you expected to happen, the abbreviation you typed, and the snippet you tried. Those details let support distinguish keyboard setup from a particular app or snippet issue.
Snippets are missing or the device is out of sync
Compare the app with the web account before resetting anything
Open the TextExpander web app and compare its groups and snippets with the desktop or mobile app. A snippet present on the web but absent on the device points to a sync or group-availability issue. A snippet present only on the device may be a recent local edit that has not reached the account.

Also expand collapsed groups in the web account. A collapsed group can make existing snippets look missing even though the data is still present.
Protect unsynced snippets before signing out
TextExpander recommends signing out and back in when a device is out of sync, but its support guidance warns that edits and snippets created since the last successful sync may be erased. Treat sign-out as a sync reset, not as a harmless first step.
- Compare the device with the web account and identify snippets that exist only locally.
- Move local-only snippets into their own group.
- Save or export that group to the desktop so you have a copy outside the app.
- Only after the copy is safe, sign out of TextExpander.
- Sign back in and allow synchronization to complete.
- Compare the restored account and device state with the saved local copy before deleting anything.
This safeguard matters for both newly created snippets and edits to existing snippets. If you cannot tell which version is current, preserve both copies and resolve the difference after synchronization rather than overwriting one blindly.
Look at Snippet Activity when a snippet was deleted or changed
If the snippet is missing rather than merely inactive, check Snippet Activity in the web account. Whether you can view or restore an earlier version depends on the account plan and your role. The available history also depends on plan limits, so older changes may not be visible. Expand every relevant group before concluding that the snippet has been deleted permanently.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. The abbreviation disappears, but the inserted content is wrong or partial
This is a different failure from “nothing happens.” It means TextExpander recognized the abbreviation, but the paste or clipboard handoff did not produce the complete snippet. Common signs include old clipboard text appearing, only part of the snippet being inserted, or abbreviation characters remaining alongside the output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAdjust Paste Timeout on Windows
On Windows, open Preferences > Expansion and increase Paste Timeout. Test the same snippet after each adjustment. A longer timeout gives the application more time to complete the paste operation, which is useful when a large snippet or a slower target app receives only part of the content.

Decide whether to restore the clipboard
On both Windows and Mac, TextExpander provides a Restore Clipboard option in its clipboard troubleshooting guidance. Turning it off is a documented test for stale or incorrect output. Understand the trade-off first: when Restore Clipboard is disabled, the copied clipboard contents are replaced by the snippet contents instead of being restored afterward.
Copy any important text before changing this setting. Then disable Restore Clipboard, retest the abbreviation, and compare the result. If the full snippet now appears, the clipboard restoration step was interfering. You can leave the setting disabled if that behavior suits your workflow, or re-enable it and report the failure to support with the test result.
When the abbreviation vanishes but the full snippet still does not appear
If the abbreviation disappears and the result is still incomplete or inaccurate after the clipboard checks, record the target app, operating system, snippet type, and exact output. TextExpander’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting Support for this case because the trigger succeeded but insertion did not.

What to send TextExpander Support
A precise report shortens the back-and-forth. Include:
- Your platform: Mac, Windows, Chrome, iPhone, or iPad.
- The application or web page where you tested.
- Whether the abbreviation remained visible, disappeared with wrong output, or worked only in another app.
- The exact abbreviation and whether it was a regular snippet or a fill-in.
- Whether a plain-text test in TextEdit or Notepad succeeded.
- Your expansion mode and configured delimiter.
- For Chrome, the extension sign-in state and whether toggling Disable Expansion and Enable Expansion helped.
- For iPhone or iPad, whether the TextExpander keyboard was selected and Allow Full Access was enabled.
- For sync problems, which snippets existed only locally and whether you saved a backup group before signing out.
- For partial output, your Paste Timeout value on Windows and whether Restore Clipboard was enabled.
Menu labels can change as TextExpander updates its apps and extensions, but the diagnostic order remains useful: establish the symptom, test a plain-text field, check platform-specific integration, and protect local data before any account reset.
