Termux errors become much easier to fix when you match the message to its cause. A 403 or 404 usually points to a repository mirror, Permission denied usually involves Android storage access, and failures under /sdcard or /usr often come from using the wrong filesystem. Low internal storage can interrupt an upgrade, while an APK signature error requires consistent installation sources.
Before changing settings or reinstalling anything, save the complete command and error output. Also note your Android version, where Termux came from, whether plugins came from the same source, the path involved, available internal storage, and the output of termux-info when package commands fail.
Start by identifying the failure
Do not treat every Termux problem as a broken package manager. Termux combines an Android application, a private Linux-like filesystem, Android shared storage, and one or more package repositories. Each layer can fail independently. The same words—especially Permission denied or No such file or directory—can therefore describe very different faults.

Keep the original output while troubleshooting. A shortened description such as “Termux is broken” removes the detail needed to choose the correct remedy. Record whether the failing location is in private $HOME, under $PREFIX, a generated ~/storage link, a raw Android path, or another application’s protected data directory.

Fix 403, 404, missing Release files, and unreachable mirrors
Package commands depend on repository metadata. A mirror can be obsolete, unavailable from your network, or configured with an old endpoint. Older Bintray URLs are a common example. Extra repositories can fail even when the main repository works, so inspect every repository you have enabled. A 403 can indicate that the server refuses the request; a 404 or missing Release file can indicate that the configured path is no longer published.
Check the current repository information
- Run
termux-infoand read the repository and mirror information it reports. - Confirm that the phone has a working internet connection. A network problem should be ruled out before changing package configuration.
- Copy the complete error, including the repository name and HTTP status. The failing name tells you whether the problem is in
mainor an additional repository. - Check whether the error appears for every package command or only when a particular extra repository is enabled.
Change the mirror with the supported tool
- Run
termux-change-repo. - Select a working mirror for the
mainrepository. If additional repositories are enabled, select working mirrors for those as well. - When the tool describes an Origin change caused by the mirror switch, accept that documented change. Do not accept unrelated signature or integrity warnings simply to make an update continue.
- Refresh the package state with
pkg upgrade, or at minimum updatetermux-toolsif a full upgrade is not yet practical.
The Termux project expresses the core remedy this way: “If that is the case, then run termux-change-repo command and change your mirror for the main repository to a different Termux Mirror.”
Changing a mirror does not repair a revoked Android permission, a full filesystem, or an executable stored on shared storage. If package commands work but one program still fails, return to the path and filesystem checks instead of changing mirrors repeatedly.

The old science-repo and game-repo entries were merged into main. If they remain in your configuration, remove those entries rather than trying random mirrors for them. A repository that is no longer published cannot be repaired by repeating pkg update. Review extra repositories individually: fixing main does not automatically make an invalid additional source valid.
Use manual source editing only as a fallback
Some repositories cannot be selected through termux-change-repo. For those, the official Termux package documentation describes editing the relevant source list manually. This is appropriate only if you can identify the exact file and repository entry involved. Back up the file before editing, change only the obsolete mirror, and avoid deleting unrelated entries. After saving, run pkg upgrade and review the output for the repository you changed.
Never bypass a repository warning by disabling signature checks or accepting arbitrary keys. A successful download is not proof that the packages are authentic. The only acceptance step described for this mirror procedure is the documented Origin change associated with switching mirrors.
Repair “Permission denied” in shared storage
Termux does not automatically receive unrestricted access to Android shared storage. The supported setup command creates convenient links under ~/storage after Android grants the permission. Those links are preferable to guessing a device-specific physical path.

Grant storage access and test it
- Run
termux-setup-storagein Termux. - Respond to Android’s permission prompt.
- Test a generated location such as
~/storage/shared. For example, list it withls ~/storage/shared. - If the listing works, use the links under
~/storageinstead of guessing Android’s physical path. - Repeat the test with the particular subdirectory you need, such as
~/storage/shared/Documents, because a working top-level link does not make every protected subdirectory accessible.
The exact permission labels and settings screens vary by Android release and device manufacturer. If access worked previously and then stopped, the Termux FAQ recommends revoking the app’s storage permission in Android settings, granting it again, and running termux-setup-storage once more. The menu may be under an App permissions or Files and media section rather than a screen with exactly the same name on every phone.
Distinguish permission failure from a protected directory
A granted storage permission does not make every Android directory accessible. Android restricts protected application-data locations and other system-managed areas. Do not try to defeat those restrictions or assume that Termux can browse another application’s private data.
Check the path in the error. A link such as ~/storage/shared/Documents is a shared-storage location; a path belonging to another app’s private data is a different case and may remain inaccessible by design. If only one directory fails while ordinary shared folders work, treat that as an Android protection boundary rather than a damaged Termux permission.
Use the right filesystem for programs and projects
Termux has its own private filesystem. Its $HOME and $PREFIX are inside the Termux Android app-data directory. In the standard layout, $PREFIX is normally reached through $HOME/../usr. This is where Termux packages, libraries, executable files, and Linux-style project environments belong.

Why /sdcard and ~/storage are unsuitable for software
Android shared storage is designed for exchanging documents between apps. It commonly uses an emulated FAT-like filesystem that does not provide every Unix feature expected by Linux programs. Executable-bit handling, symbolic links, ownership, permissions, locking, and other special-file behavior can differ or be unavailable. A script may be readable there but fail to execute; a development environment may install but behave unpredictably. Some tools also expect atomic renames, Unix mode bits, or special files that shared storage cannot represent reliably.
- Keep package installations and virtual environments in
$HOMEor under$PREFIX. - Keep source trees that need executable permissions, symlinks, or Unix metadata in private Termux storage.
- Use
~/storage/sharedfor documents, media, exported archives, and files that must be opened by another Android app. - Use a copy or archive to exchange a project, rather than treating shared storage as the project’s live Linux filesystem.
Move a project out of shared storage
Create or use a directory in your private home, then copy the project from shared storage. For example:
mkdir -p ~/projects
cp -r ~/storage/shared/my-project ~/projects/Run the build, interpreter, or package installation from ~/projects/my-project. Copy generated documents back to shared storage only when another app needs them. If the project contains hidden files, verify that they were copied before deleting the original; the goal is to preserve the working tree in private storage, not merely one visible document.

Understand /usr, /bin, and similar errors
Termux’s Linux-like userland is not the Android host root filesystem. A command that tries to write to Android’s /usr or /bin is addressing a host path that is not Termux’s package destination. Termux packages install below $PREFIX, not Android’s host /usr.

First check the package’s Termux-specific documentation; otherwise, a user executable generally belongs in a directory under $HOME that you add to your PATH, rather than in the Android root filesystem. Do not respond to a host-path error by trying to obtain root access; the documented fix is to use the Termux filesystem layout.
Recover an upgrade that ends with “No such file or directory”
That message does not always mean a path was mistyped. Termux downloads the package archives needed for an upgrade before installing them. If available device storage falls below Android’s threshold while those files are cached, Android can remove the downloaded archives. Installation then fails because the expected file has disappeared.
Check internal storage before retrying
- Open Android’s storage settings and check available internal space, not only the free space on a removable card.
- Remove or move unneeded videos, downloads, old archives, and other large files. Keep a backup before deleting anything important.
- Return to Termux and run the upgrade again after enough space is available.
- If the device reports space differently in Android settings and a file manager, use the system’s available internal-storage figure as the relevant warning sign.
The threshold is implementation-dependent and can vary with Android version and device, so there is no single safe number that applies to every phone. A removable card may hold documents yet still leave the internal area too full for Termux’s package cache.
Reduce the size of each operation
If a full upgrade still fails, update smaller groups instead of requesting a large transaction at once. Let one group finish, verify that the package files remain present, and then continue with the next group. Avoid repeatedly retrying while storage is critically low; each attempt can download archives that are deleted again. Freeing space is the primary remedy, while smaller transactions are a way to reduce the amount cached at one time, not a substitute for adequate storage.
Fix APK signature and plugin update errors
Termux APKs from different distribution sources are signed differently. The Android installer treats those signatures as part of the app’s identity, so an APK from one source cannot necessarily update an installation from another. Typical messages include INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE, INSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE, and “signatures do not match previously installed version.”
Check source consistency
Identify where the Termux app was installed and where each Termux plugin came from. The app and all plugins need to come from one compatible source. Updating only the main app, or only one plugin, does not resolve a signing mismatch. A plugin that appears to be the same product can still be incompatible when its APK was signed by a different distributor.

Switch sources without losing more data than necessary
- Back up your Termux data before uninstalling anything. Copy important files from the private home to a location you can retrieve later, and verify that the backup contains the files you need.
- Choose one installation source for Termux and its plugins.
- Uninstall all Termux and plugin APKs from the old source. Android may remove app-private data during this step, which is why the backup must come first.
- Install the Termux app and the complete plugin set from the chosen source.
- Restore your backed-up files and reinstall packages as needed.
Installing a replacement APK over the old one is not a safe workaround when the signatures differ. The complete set must be aligned to the same signing source. If you cannot identify the source of an installed plugin, treat that uncertainty as a reason to back up before changing anything, not as a reason to force installation.
A practical decision path
Use this order when the symptom is unclear:
- Record the full command, exact error, Android version, Termux source, plugin sources, path, and free internal storage.
- If the message contains an HTTP status, a mirror name, or a missing
Releasefile, investigate repositories withtermux-infoandtermux-change-repo. - If the path begins with
~/storageor points into shared storage, runtermux-setup-storage, then check whether Android is blocking a protected directory. - If a program is installed or executed from
/sdcardor~/storage, move it into private$HOMEor$PREFIX. - If an upgrade reports missing files, check internal storage and retry in smaller groups after freeing space.
- If Android reports an installation or signature mismatch, stop package troubleshooting and align the app and plugins to one APK source after making a backup.
This sequence prevents a repository problem from being “fixed” with an unnecessary reinstall and prevents an APK problem from being mistaken for a shell permission error. It also gives a support request useful context: the exact text, location, source, and storage state point to distinct remedies.

Termux may have downloaded package archives and then lost them when Android reclaimed cached files because internal storage became too low. Check internal free space, remove or move large files, and retry. If necessary, perform smaller upgrade groups; there is no universal safe-space number because the threshold varies by Android version and device.

Why can’t an APK from another source update my Termux installation?
Different distribution sources sign their APKs differently. Android can report INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE, INSTALL_FAILED_SHARED_USER_INCOMPATIBLE, or a signatures-do-not-match message. Back up first, uninstall the old Termux and plugin APKs, and install the complete set from one source.
