If a faint logo, game HUD, news banner, or paused frame remains after you change the picture on an OLED TV, stop displaying the static content, switch to varied video, and turn the television off with its remote while leaving it connected to power. A short standby maintenance cycle often clears temporary image retention. If the mark remains, use the exact model’s built-in Pixel Refresher, Screen Optimization, Pixel Refresh, or Panel Refresh function as its manual instructs. Do not repeatedly run a long refresh. A pattern that survives different content and the model’s recommended procedure needs manufacturer or authorized-service diagnosis.
What to do first
- Change the picture immediately. Stop showing the logo, score bar, game interface, paused frame, or other fixed image. Play varied full-screen content instead.
- Give the panel time. A faint ghost that follows a short period of static content commonly fades after the image changes.
- Turn the TV off with the remote. Leave it plugged into a live power outlet so its normal standby maintenance can run. Do not switch off a power strip or unplug the set during this period.
- Use a manual panel-care cycle only if needed. Open the exact model’s manual and follow its Pixel Refresher, Screen Optimization, Pixel Refresh, or Panel Refresh instructions.
- Escalate a persistent mark. If the outline remains over unrelated content after the recommended cycle, contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.
Those steps are deliberately conservative. Maintenance names, durations, trigger points, and manual-use limits differ by brand, model, region, software version, and panel generation.
Temporary image retention versus permanent burn-in
Temporary retention
LG defines image retention as an image that “sticks” to the screen even after the content changes. In practical terms, you see a pale outline or ghost of a recently displayed object, but it weakens or disappears after varied content and standby maintenance. One brief afterimage is not proof that the panel is permanently damaged.
Burn-in
Burn-in is a longer-lasting mark that remains visible while other material plays. It is commonly associated with displaying a static image for an extended time, especially at high brightness. If the same shape is visible in films, menus, games, and solid-color test screens, treat it as a possible persistent panel problem rather than repeatedly trying to erase it with refresh cycles.
Why the distinction matters
A maintenance cycle is designed to rebalance panel pixels; it is not a guaranteed repair for every permanent mark. Running a long cycle unnecessarily can add wear, and a cleaning liquid or screen wipe cannot correct pixel-state retention. Diagnose the behavior over different content before deciding whether service is needed.

Safe troubleshooting sequence
1. Remove the static cause
Change to moving, varied content and avoid pausing the same frame. Static channel logos, sports and weather graphics, fixed game interfaces, menu screens, and bright banners are common triggers. Do not leave the TV displaying a console dashboard or streaming pause screen while you investigate.
2. Let standby maintenance run
Press the remote’s power button rather than cutting mains power. OLED televisions use standby time for automatic panel care. The set may appear off while a short compensation cycle runs, so keep it connected to electricity and leave it undisturbed. The exact trigger is model-specific; the figures below are manufacturer examples, not a universal OLED schedule.

Find the model number on the rear label or in the TV’s About or Support screen, then open the matching online manual or built-in Help. Look under headings such as OLED Care, Panel Care, Display, Expert panel settings, or Picture. Choose the function whose description mentions image retention or pixel refresh; do not select an unrelated factory reset.
4. Run a manual cycle only under the stated conditions
Start the operation when you can leave the television unused for its full duration. Do not turn the set on, unplug it, or interrupt the cycle. Some procedures are short optimization routines; others are approximately an hour and are intended only for noticeable retention.
5. Recheck with varied content
After the cycle finishes, watch several kinds of material: a film with changing scenes, a bright daytime program, a game, and a plain or low-detail scene. A mark that is gone or steadily fading is consistent with temporary retention. A fixed outline that remains at the same location warrants support rather than repeated refresh attempts.

These are operational examples from official support material. They are not independent tests, guarantees that every mark will clear, or rules that can be transferred from one brand to another.
Brand-specific instructions and menu paths
LG televisions
LG’s US support guidance says the television performs a short Pixel Cleaning cycle after four cumulative hours of use and a longer calibration after 2,000 cumulative hours. The longer operation is described as taking about an hour. If you notice retention or burn-in, the same guidance allows a manual Pixel Refresher on models that provide it.
Use the path shown by your model’s OLED Care or Support menu; LG menu names and locations vary. Start the operation only when the screen can remain off for the complete cycle. LG also describes a screen saver that can start after approximately two minutes of inactivity in specified paused-video or no-signal conditions, plus logo-brightness controls. Those features reduce exposure to fixed graphics but do not reverse an established mark.
Samsung televisions
Samsung India’s support instructions say Screen Optimization begins when the set is turned off after at least four cumulative hours of use and takes about 10–15 minutes. The television must remain connected to a power source. Samsung’s UK support guidance places Pixel Refresh under Panel Care and directs owners to Samsung Service if the condition persists after the procedure.

To locate it, turn off the TV with the remote, then open the model’s Picture or General settings when the screen is available and look for Panel Care, Screen Optimization, or Pixel Refresh. Samsung’s labels differ between regions and generations, so use the wording shown on your set rather than following a menu path from a different model.
Sony OLED televisions
On applicable Sony models, the Help Guide path is Settings → Display & Sound → Expert panel settings → Panel refresh. Sony describes Panel Refresh as an approximately one-hour operation and warns that manual use should be limited to when retention is particularly noticeable and no more than once per year because it may affect the panel’s usable life. A current US support article applies the procedure only to specified models and conditions.
If your menu does not contain Panel refresh, do not assume the feature is hidden or safe to force through a service menu. Check the model-specific guide and use the normal standby behavior instead.
When a refresh is appropriate—and when to stop
Appropriate use
- The image appeared after a logo, paused frame, HUD, or banner was left on screen.
- The ghost is faint and changes in visibility as the content changes.
- The model manual specifically recommends Pixel Refresher, Pixel Refresh, Screen Optimization, or Panel Refresh for noticeable retention.
- You can leave the TV connected and undisturbed for the complete operation.
Stop and seek help
- The same outline remains on unrelated content after standby maintenance and one manufacturer-recommended procedure.
- The mark is clearly visible in menus, films, games, and plain scenes.
- The panel shows multiple fixed areas, colored bands, flicker, or other symptoms not described by the panel-care function.
- The TV’s instructions prohibit another manual cycle or specify a service call.
Record the model number, software version, approximate time the mark first appeared, the static content that preceded it, and which approved procedure you ran. A photograph taken on a neutral gray or white screen can help support staff understand the symptom, but do not use maximum brightness simply to make the mark look worse.

Preventing future image retention
Use the TV’s protection features
- Keep the built-in screen saver enabled. LG describes activation after approximately two minutes in specified paused or no-signal situations.
- Leave Pixel Shift enabled on Sony models that provide it.
- Enable logo-dimming or static-logo reduction where the menu offers it.
- Allow the television to enter standby while connected to power so automatic panel maintenance can operate.
Change viewing habits around static graphics
- Pause or switch sources instead of leaving a game HUD, channel logo, weather map, or sports scoreboard on screen for long periods.
- Do not run a bright desktop, console menu, or signage loop unattended for hours.
- Use a lower, comfortable brightness for static-heavy viewing; prolonged high brightness is a cited risk factor.
- When leaving the room, turn the TV off with its remote rather than disabling the outlet.
Protection features vary by model and may not appear on every panel generation. Their presence reduces risk; it does not make an OLED panel immune to long, bright, unchanging images.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The ghost fades within minutes
Continue using varied content and let the TV complete its normal standby maintenance. Prevention settings are more useful than a manual long refresh for an occasional, quickly fading afterimage.
The ghost is still visible after one standby period
Check the model’s panel-care instructions and run the approved procedure once under the stated conditions. Keep notes about the duration and result so you can give support an accurate history.
The mark returns in the same location
Test with several unrelated sources and scenes. If the outline repeatedly returns or remains fixed, stop scheduling additional refresh cycles and contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider.

The TV was unplugged before maintenance
Reconnect it, turn it off with the remote, and allow a normal standby period. Do not attempt to compensate by immediately launching multiple manual cycles.

The menu has no panel-refresh option
That may be normal for the model. Confirm the model number and software version, read the matching guide, and rely on the automatic standby routine if that is all the manufacturer provides.
What service can and cannot establish
Manufacturer support can determine whether your model has a relevant panel-care function, whether a cycle was completed correctly, and whether the symptom meets its service criteria. An authorized technician can inspect a persistent pattern and advise on repair or panel replacement. Do not buy a replacement panel or a purported “retention remover” before a model-specific diagnosis; no generally useful standalone physical product is established for temporary OLED image retention.
Support availability, warranty treatment, and repair options depend on your country, model, purchase date, and the manufacturer’s policies. Keep your receipt and serial number available, and describe the content that caused the mark rather than only calling it “burn-in.”
