The correct Taskwarrior sync fix starts with two facts: your Taskwarrior version and the sync backend it uses. Taskwarrior 3.x uses a local database and TaskChampion-based synchronization; legacy Taskwarrior 2.x commonly uses Taskserver. Taskserver instructions, including task sync init and legacy TLS remedies, do not apply to Taskwarrior 3.x. Run task --version, identify the backend, and then follow the matching branch below.

1. Identify the version and sync backend before changing anything

Many failed repairs come from applying a Taskwarrior 2.x recipe to a 3.x installation. Record the version first:

  1. Open a terminal and run task --version.
  2. Record whether the installation is Taskwarrior 3.x or a legacy 2.x release.
  3. Determine which backend is configured: a TaskChampion sync server, a documented cloud-storage method, local or Git synchronization, or legacy Taskserver.
  4. List every device that synchronizes the account and note which backend each device uses.
  5. Before recovery work that could alter replicas, make a separate backup of your task data and configuration.

The current Taskwarrior syncing documentation describes server, cloud, local and Git approaches for current releases. The legacy troubleshooting page covers Taskwarrior 2.x with Taskserver and explicitly states that Taskserver does not work with Taskwarrior 3.x. Treat every command in the legacy sections below as version-specific.

What you have Sync model What to use for troubleshooting
Taskwarrior 3.x TaskChampion-backed synchronization with a supported server, cloud, local or Git option Use the current 3.x documentation and the configuration for that backend; do not use Taskserver-only procedures.
Taskwarrior 2.x Often Taskserver, with TLS and a client sync key Use the legacy hostname, port, certificate, key and GnuTLS checks in the Taskserver troubleshooting guide.
Unknown version or mixed devices Potentially different clients and backends Inventory every device before changing a server or deleting local data.

Do not assume that two devices are interchangeable because they show the same task list. A 3.x client using TaskChampion and a 2.x client enrolled with Taskserver have different data stores, credentials and recovery procedures. Write down the endpoint, account or namespace, and configuration location for each device before attempting a reset.

2. Use a synchronization method that matches Taskwarrior 3.x

Taskwarrior 3.0 and later store tasks in a local database. Taskwarrior’s documentation states: “As of Taskwarrior 3.0, tasks are stored in a local database in a format that is not amenable to this sort of synchronization.” The synchronization mechanism is TaskChampion, not direct copying of the database files.

Do not place a Taskwarrior 3.x data directory in Dropbox, Syncthing, rsync or another file-level synchronizer. Concurrent or delayed file copies can corrupt the database, and this setup is unsupported. Stop the file synchronizer, preserve the affected copies, and return to a supported TaskChampion, cloud, local or Git configuration rather than trying to merge database files manually.

3.x approach Who operates the endpoint Network requirement Important distinction
TaskChampion sync server You or an operator of the server Client access to the configured HTTP-based sync endpoint Taskwarrior encrypts task data before synchronization so the server does not receive unencrypted task data, according to the manual. This statement does not establish the security of every third-party service or client.
Cloud-storage method The selected cloud-storage service Whatever access that service requires Use only the method and layout documented for your Taskwarrior release; do not substitute raw database-folder synchronization.
Local synchronization Your local system or removable/shared local location Access to the configured local location It is a documented option, but it still must use Taskwarrior’s synchronization mechanism rather than copying database internals.
Git synchronization Your Git repository and its administrators Repository access when exchanging revisions Follow the Taskwarrior workflow for Git; do not treat arbitrary commits of the data directory as a database merge.
Taskserver Legacy Taskserver administrator Taskserver port and TLS connection Legacy Taskserver is for Taskwarrior 2.x, not Taskwarrior 3.x.

Compare these choices by compatibility, endpoint ownership, maintenance responsibility and network dependency. A self-hosted server requires you to maintain the endpoint and its certificates; a hosted service shifts that operational work to the service operator. Local and Git methods depend on your access to the chosen location or repository. None of these options is automatically interchangeable, and their security and operational properties are not identical.

The task-sync(5) manual for task-3.5.0 also warns that file-hosting a legacy .task directory can create conflicts when two locations edit while disconnected: the file host does not merge tasks properly. That warning is separate from the 3.x local-database architecture and is not a recommendation to synchronize 3.x database files.

3. Understand what “Sync required” means

The message “There are local changes. Sync required.” means that Taskwarrior has detected a local change that has not been synchronized. It does not prove that a server is unreachable, and it does not prove that remote changes exist. The synchronize command documentation says you do not have to sync immediately and that running sync as often as desired is safe when connectivity and configuration are correct.

  1. Check that you are using the expected configuration and backend.
  2. Confirm that you have network or local access to the configured endpoint.
  3. Run the normal synchronization command when you are ready and connected.
  4. If it fails, capture the exact error text and continue with the version-specific diagnostics below.

Do not delete local tasks merely to remove this notice. Deletion can turn a pending local change into permanent data loss, especially when another replica contains the only copy. If the notice appears repeatedly, record which command created the local change and whether synchronization succeeds from another device; that comparison helps distinguish a client configuration issue from an endpoint problem.

4. Troubleshoot Taskwarrior 3.x without using legacy Taskserver fixes

When you see “Taskwarrior sync failed” or “Could not connect”

First verify the configured TaskChampion, cloud, local or Git endpoint and that the device can reach it. A generic connection message is not enough to identify a certificate, authentication or data problem. Confirm the endpoint address, credentials or keys required by that backend, and any network or firewall policy between the client and endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the configuration on the failing device against a device that still works. Differences in endpoint address, account identity, repository location or selected backend often explain why only one client fails. Avoid changing several settings at once: preserve the original values, change one item, retry, and record the result.

Run task diagnostics and preserve the exact command output. Compare the expected endpoint and configuration with what the diagnostic reports. Do not run task sync init unless you have established that the client is a legacy Taskwarrior 2.x installation using Taskserver; that command is not a universal 3.x repair.

When a 3.x database was synchronized as files

Stop all file-level synchronization on the affected directory immediately. Keep copies of every device’s state before attempting restoration. Because unsupported file synchronization can corrupt a database, there is no safe generic “merge these folders” command. Restore a known-good copy if necessary, then configure one supported TaskChampion-based method and verify synchronization on a test device before reconnecting other replicas.

If you cannot identify a known-good copy, do not alternate between devices hoping one will overwrite the others. Label each copy with its device and capture date, then seek help with those copies intact. Reinitializing from the wrong replica can remove unique local edits, and synchronized changes may no longer be undoable afterward.

How the TaskChampion server design affects expectations

The 3.x manual describes a TaskChampion sync server as HTTP-based and says Taskwarrior encrypts task data before syncing so the server does not see unencrypted data. This describes that documented server design only; it is not a blanket security guarantee for every hosted service, third-party client or surrounding account.

5. Troubleshoot legacy Taskwarrior 2.x and Taskserver

The following remedies apply to the legacy Taskserver path described by the Gothenburg Bit Factory troubleshooting guide. Do not apply them to Taskwarrior 3.x.

“Could not connect” or a failed connection

  1. Check the hostname. Confirm the server name in the client configuration is spelled correctly and is the fully qualified hostname intended by the administrator.
  2. Check DNS. Verify that the hostname resolves from the affected client. A name that works on one network may fail on another because of different DNS settings.
  3. Check the port and firewall. The legacy guide cites port 53589 as the default example. Your installation may use a custom port; ensure that the configured port is open between client and server.
  4. Check server availability. Confirm that Taskserver is running and listening on the expected address and port.

Change one variable at a time and retry. If DNS resolves but the port is blocked, fixing certificates will not help; if the port is open but the server process is stopped, changing client settings will not help. Ask the administrator whether the service recently moved, changed ports or received a new certificate before editing local settings.

“Certificate fails validation, Handshake failed”

A TLS handshake failure is usually an identity, trust, protocol or certificate-lifetime problem. Check these items in order:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The certificate’s common name must match the server’s fully qualified hostname.
  • The hostname used in the client configuration must be the same identity covered by the certificate.
  • For a self-signed certificate, configure the issuing CA so the client can trust it.
  • Confirm that the client and server have at least one TLS cipher in common.
  • Verify that both the client and server certificates are still valid and have not expired.

Do not make hostname validation weaker as a routine workaround. Correct the certificate identity or trust chain instead, and involve the Taskserver administrator when the server certificate or cipher policy must change. A certificate that works on one client may still fail elsewhere if that client has a different CA store or an incorrect system clock, so compare the failing and working environments before replacing certificates.

“Client sync key not found”

On the legacy system, the official troubleshooting page attributes this error to skipping task sync init. That command initializes the local sync key and uploads pending tasks. Back up the local task data before running initialization or any recovery action that could change a replica. If the client was already initialized and its key was deleted or replaced, stop and ask the Taskserver administrator how the client should be re-enrolled; do not overwrite another device’s identity.

“Taskwarrior was built without GnuTLS support. Sync is not available”

This message means the installed Taskwarrior build lacks the GnuTLS support required for that legacy sync path. Run task diagnostics and look for the libgnutls entry. If the library or feature is absent, install a build that includes the required support or rebuild Taskwarrior following the applicable source-build instructions in the official FAQ at taskwarrior.org/support/faq/. Rebuilding is relevant only when it matches how your package was produced; do not assume that installing a runtime library can add a feature missing from a prebuilt binary.

6. Handle conflicts and protect data during recovery

Recognize a real conflict

A local “Sync required” notice is a pending-change indicator, not a conflict report. A conflict becomes a data-integrity concern when two replicas have diverged, when a file host has copied different versions of a legacy directory, or when a repair would replace one replica with another. Treat missing tasks, duplicated tasks, unexpected status changes or a client that suddenly appears empty as possible replica problems until you have checked the backups.

Back up before changing replicas

  • Keep a separate, read-only copy of each device’s current task data.
  • Record which copy is newest and which edits are known to exist on each device.
  • Do not delete or reinitialize a client until you know where its unique tasks and changes are stored.
  • After recovery, synchronize one client first and inspect the result before adding additional devices.
  • Keep the pre-recovery copies until every expected task and change has been verified on the restored client.

The current manual warns that once changes have been synchronized to a server, previous operations can no longer be undone. A backup is therefore especially important when you suspect divergent replicas or accidental edits. Synchronize only after deciding which copy is authoritative for each unique change; a successful command does not prove that an unwanted overwrite was harmless.

Do not ask a file host to merge tasks

For legacy file-sharing setups, the task-sync(5) documentation warns that a file host does not merge tasks correctly when disconnected locations edit the same data. Preserve both copies and use the documented Taskwarrior synchronization approach instead of accepting an automatic folder conflict resolution that may silently discard tasks.

Validate after recovery

Review representative pending, completed and recurring tasks, including tasks edited on different devices. Confirm that the expected project, status, due date and annotations are present before reconnecting another replica. If a test device synchronizes correctly but a second device does not, stop adding clients and return to version, backend and credential checks rather than repeatedly reinitializing.

7. Collect diagnostics before asking for help

Diagnostics are more useful when they show the exact version, backend and observed error rather than a summary such as “sync is broken.”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Run task --version and record the complete result.
  2. Run task diagnostics on the affected client.
  3. For a legacy Taskserver deployment, run taskd diagnostics on the server as well.
  4. Use the verbose client and server debug modes described in the official troubleshooting documentation when ordinary diagnostics do not identify the failure.
  5. Write down the expected behavior, the exact observed message, when it started, and whether another device can still synchronize.
  6. Note the backend, endpoint type, configured port where relevant, and whether the problem follows one device or affects all devices.
  7. Remove passwords, private keys, client sync keys, personal hostnames where necessary, and private task titles or descriptions before posting logs publicly.

The Taskwarrior getting-help page is the appropriate place to find support channels and reporting guidance. Share enough configuration and version detail to reproduce the problem, but never publish credentials or the contents of private tasks.

8. A concise decision checklist

  • Version: Is the client Taskwarrior 3.x or legacy 2.x?
  • Backend: Is it TaskChampion, cloud, local, Git or Taskserver?
  • Architecture: If it is 3.x, are you avoiding raw file synchronization of the local database?
  • Network: For legacy Taskserver, do DNS, hostname, port, firewall and server-process checks pass?
  • TLS: For legacy handshake errors, do certificate identity, CA trust, cipher overlap and expiration all check out?
  • Initialization: Is “Client sync key not found” occurring on a legacy client that never ran task sync init?
  • Build: Does task diagnostics show the GnuTLS support required by the legacy installation?
  • Safety: Do you have backups before reinitializing, restoring or synchronizing a possibly divergent replica?
  • Validation: Have you checked representative tasks after recovery before reconnecting every device?
  • Escalation: Have you collected diagnostics and redacted secrets and private task content?

Following this order prevents the most damaging category error: repairing a Taskwarrior 3.x database as though it were a Taskserver-managed Taskwarrior 2.x file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is “Sync required” proof that Taskwarrior cannot reach the server?

No. “There are local changes. Sync required.” only reports an unsynchronized local change. It does not establish that remote changes exist or that connectivity failed. Check the backend and run synchronization when ready.

Can I use Taskserver with Taskwarrior 3.x?

No. The legacy troubleshooting documentation states that Taskserver does not work with Taskwarrior 3.x. Identify the 3.x TaskChampion, cloud, local or Git configuration instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I put my Taskwarrior 3.x folder in Syncthing or Dropbox?

No. Taskwarrior 3.x stores tasks in a local database that is not designed for file-level synchronization. Syncthing, rsync and similar tools can corrupt it and are unsupported.

What does “Client sync key not found” mean?

On a legacy Taskwarrior 2.x Taskserver client, the documented cause is that task sync init was skipped. Back up task data first. If the client was previously enrolled, ask the administrator about re-enrollment rather than replacing another device’s identity.

How do I fix “Certificate fails validation, Handshake failed”?

For legacy Taskserver, check that the certificate name matches the fully qualified hostname, the client uses that same hostname, the issuing CA is trusted, client and server share a cipher, and certificates have not expired. Do not disable hostname validation as a shortcut.

What should I redact from diagnostics?

Remove passwords, private keys, client sync keys, sensitive hostnames where appropriate, and private task titles or descriptions. Retain the version, backend, exact error, relevant endpoint details and expected-versus-observed behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with task --version and identify the backend. Use TaskChampion-based methods for Taskwarrior 3.x and never synchronize its database as ordinary files. Reserve hostname, port, TLS, sync-key and GnuTLS remedies for legacy Taskwarrior 2.x with Taskserver. Back up every replica before recovery, then collect redacted diagnostics if the problem remains.
