If your game stutters or CPU usage spikes whenever you move an 8K mouse, first lower its polling rate to 4,000 Hz or 2,000 Hz and reproduce the same scene. If the problem remains, test 1,000 Hz. Then isolate the game, USB connection, wireless receiver, background software, and drivers in that order. This reversible process shows whether 8K input is the trigger without assuming that the mouse or computer is defective.
What 8K polling changes
A mouse polling rate is the frequency at which the mouse reports its position to the computer. It is not DPI or sensitivity. At 8,000 Hz, the mouse can send up to 8,000 reports per second; at 1,000 Hz, it sends up to 1,000. Corsair describes 8K as eight times the reporting frequency of 1K. Razer explains the interval as changing from 1 millisecond at 1,000 Hz to 1/8 millisecond at 8,000 Hz.
More frequent reports create more USB traffic and more input events for Windows, the game, and other software to process. Corsair states that higher polling can increase CPU use, while Logitech warns that added USB traffic may reduce system performance and cause FPS drops. The effect depends on your processor, game engine, frame rate, drivers, connection, and what else is running. There is no universal CPU percentage or FPS penalty that applies to every 8K mouse.

Typical symptoms
- Frame-time spikes or visible hitching only while you move the mouse.
- CPU usage rises sharply during rapid movement, even when keyboard input is normal.
- FPS falls at 8,000 Hz but returns at 4,000, 2,000, or 1,000 Hz.
- The desktop feels smooth but one game becomes jerky.
- A wireless mouse works normally in wired mode, or the reverse.
These symptoms overlap. A game may mishandle high-rate input, a receiver may be affected by interference, or a USB hub may add another failure point. Use the sequence below to separate those causes.

Before changing anything, record a baseline
Write down the mouse model, current report rate, game and map or practice scene, approximate CPU usage, FPS or frame-time behavior, and whether the hitch occurs only while moving the mouse. Keep the test repeatable: use the same graphics settings, resolution, character position, and movement pattern. A simple baseline prevents a normal variation in a match or loading scene from looking like an improvement.
- Move the mouse slowly for 10 seconds, then make several rapid sweeps.
- Observe CPU usage in Task Manager or your normal performance overlay.
- Note whether the pointer or camera skips, whether audio crackles, and whether keyboard controls remain responsive.
- Record whether the mouse is wired, connected through a hub or dock, or using a wireless receiver.
Do not change several variables at once. Change one setting, repeat the same test, and record the result.
Step 1: lower the polling rate to 4K, 2K, then 1K
Open the mouse manufacturer’s configuration application and find the report-rate or polling-rate control. Set it to 4,000 Hz or 2,000 Hz, apply the setting, and repeat the exact baseline test. Razer’s current HyperPolling guidance specifically recommends 4,000 or 2,000 Hz as lower-rate troubleshooting choices. Logitech also recommends reducing the report rate when users see FPS drops above 1,000 Hz.
Recommended Free Tools
- Set 4,000 Hz and repeat the same game scene and movement pattern.
- If stuttering or high CPU usage continues, set 2,000 Hz and repeat.
- If the issue is still present, set 1,000 Hz and repeat.
- Compare CPU load, frame-time consistency, and the feel of camera movement at each rate.
A clear improvement at 4K or 2K strongly suggests that the workload created by high-rate input is involved, although it does not prove whether the limiting component is the game, CPU, USB path, or driver. Improvement only at 1K indicates that your particular configuration cannot comfortably process the higher event rate in the tested workload. If no rate changes the symptom, continue with the connection and software tests rather than assuming polling is the cause.

Polling-rate comparison
| Setting | Maximum reports per second | Approximate report interval | What to test |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8,000 Hz | 8,000 | 0.125 ms (1/8 ms) | Baseline for the symptom; highest processing and USB-event load |
| 4,000 Hz | 4,000 | 0.25 ms | First lower-rate comparison recommended by vendor guidance |
| 2,000 Hz | 2,000 | 0.5 ms | Second lower-rate comparison when 4K is still unstable |
| 1,000 Hz | 1,000 | 1 ms | Compatibility reference and lowest-rate diagnostic in this sequence |
These are maximum reporting frequencies, not a guarantee that every movement produces a distinct report at that exact interval. Sensor firmware, motion speed, the operating system, and the game can affect the number of events that are actually processed.
Step 2: determine whether one game is responsible
After testing the original title, try a second game with a different engine or move the pointer around the Windows desktop for several minutes. Logitech advises trying another game, and Razer notes that some older game engines were not designed to handle high-rate input well.
- Only one game stutters: investigate that game’s input path, raw-input options, overlays, and engine behavior.
- Several games stutter but the desktop is smooth: compare graphics, overlays, anti-cheat components, and game-specific input handling.
- The desktop also stutters: focus on the USB path, receiver, driver, firmware, background processes, or operating-system behavior.
A difference between titles identifies a game-dependent pattern; it does not by itself prove the exact engine mechanism. Keep the report rate fixed while changing games so the comparison remains meaningful.

- Save work and close non-essential applications.
- Pause downloads, cloud synchronization, and software updates.
- Leave only the game, its launcher if required, and one performance monitor.
- Repeat the same movement at 8K, then at the lower rate that previously helped.
If closing applications removes the spike, the mouse may be exposing a CPU-capacity problem rather than failing. Reopen programs one at a time to find the conflict. If the spike remains with a nearly idle system, proceed to physical connection checks.
Step 4: test a wired mouse on a direct motherboard USB port
For a wired mouse, remove hubs, docks, front-panel extensions, KVM switches, and other intermediary devices from the test. Connect the cable directly to a native motherboard USB port. Corsair recommends a port linked directly to the motherboard chipset, and Microsoft’s Windows device guidance recommends removing a hub and connecting directly while troubleshooting.
- Shut down the game and unplug the mouse from its current port.
- Connect it to a rear motherboard USB port when one is available.
- Do not connect other high-bandwidth peripherals through the same hub during the test.
- Allow Windows to detect the device, then repeat the baseline movement at the selected polling rates.
- Try a second direct motherboard port if the first produces no change.
Use the same cable and mouse while moving between ports. A result that changes with the port points toward the hub, dock, front-panel wiring, chipset path, power behavior, or a damaged connector. It does not automatically identify which component is at fault, so test the suspect hub or dock separately after the direct connection is stable.

Wireless 8K operation adds a radio link and a receiver USB connection. Put the receiver close to the mouse with a clear path. Pulsar recommends placing its receiver at least 20 centimeters in front of the mouse and removing nearby Wi-Fi or Bluetooth sources. Razer’s guidance for its receiver says to keep it within 30 centimeters and in line of sight. These are vendor-specific setup recommendations, not universal guarantees for every radio design.

- 【26K Independent X/Y DPI】Enjoy responsive, pixel-precise tracking with 99.6% resolution accuracy and 26K DPI. Set independent X/Y-axis DPIs according to your display size and in-game settings for the perfect horizontal and vertical movements sensitivity, and switch your DPI levels on-the-fly by pressing DPI +/- buttons.
- Use the supplied receiver extension or a short USB extension if it lets you position the receiver on the desk.
- Place the receiver in front of or beside the mouse, not behind a metal computer case.
- Keep it away from active USB 3 hubs, external drives, wireless adapters, routers, Bluetooth transmitters, and other busy radio sources.
- Try another USB port while keeping the receiver in the same clear location.
- Repeat the same movement test in wireless mode, then connect the mouse by cable and repeat.
If wired mode is smooth but wireless mode is not, receiver placement, interference, receiver firmware, battery state, or a faulty radio component becomes more likely. If both modes behave identically at every rate, continue with the game, CPU, and driver checks instead of treating radio interference as proven.
Step 6: check high-rate input options in the game
Some games expose settings that change how mouse input is buffered or sampled. Razer’s guidance gives Valorant’s Raw Input Buffer and Overwatch’s High Precision Mouse Input as examples to check. Menus and names can change between game versions, so verify that the option exists in your current build before relying on it.
- Open the game’s Settings or Options menu.
- Search the Controls, Mouse, Input, or Advanced section for raw-input, high-precision, buffering, or high-frequency input options.
- Change one option, restart the game if it requests one, and repeat the same scene.
- Record whether the change affects 8K, lower polling rates, or both.
Do not disable unrelated graphics settings while testing input. If an input option helps only one title, leave the mouse rate unchanged and document the game-specific setting so a later update can be checked if the symptom returns.
Step 7: reconnect, update, and test another computer
When the issue persists at 1,000 Hz, outside the original game, and with a direct or well-positioned connection, perform basic device recovery before replacing hardware.

- Check the mouse manufacturer’s firmware and configuration software for updates that support your model.
- In Windows, open Device Manager, inspect the relevant mouse or USB entries, and update or reinstall a driver only when Windows or the manufacturer provides an appropriate package.
- Test the mouse on another computer, ideally with the same polling-rate choices available.
Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes reconnecting the device, checking ports and hubs, testing another PC, and checking drivers. A fault that follows the mouse or receiver to another computer is different from a fault that stays with one PC. Record the rate, connection mode, port, and result for each system before contacting support.
Use the result pattern to choose the next action
| Observed pattern | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| 8K stutters; 4K or 2K is smooth in every test | High-rate processing or event volume is exceeding this workload’s comfortable margin | Use the highest stable rate and check CPU-heavy software, game updates, and system load |
| Only one game stutters at 8K | Game-specific input handling is implicated | Check that title’s raw-input and high-precision settings and compare another game |
| All rates stutter on one PC, including the desktop | Connection, driver, firmware, background software, or PC-specific issue | Use a direct port, remove hubs, reconnect, update, and test another PC |
| Wireless is bad; wired is smooth | Receiver position, interference, wireless firmware, battery, or radio hardware is implicated | Move the receiver into line of sight, separate it from USB 3 and radio sources, then retest |
| The fault follows the mouse to another computer | Mouse, cable, or receiver is more likely than the original PC | Gather test notes and request model-specific support or warranty service |
| The fault stays on one computer with another mouse | That computer’s USB, driver, software, or game environment is more likely | Continue PC-side troubleshooting and compare a direct port with a clean software session |
CPU and system expectations
Corsair’s 2025 support guidance lists an Intel Core i5 9th generation or AMD Ryzen 5 2nd generation as a minimum recommendation for best performance at 4,000 Hz. For 8,000 Hz, it lists an Intel Core i7 9th generation or AMD Ryzen 7 2nd generation. These are the manufacturer’s recommendations, not independently established universal requirements. A newer low-power processor, an older high-clocked processor, game engine overhead, and background tasks can produce different results.
Use CPU recommendations as context, not as a pass-or-fail test. A computer that meets the stated tier can still stutter in a particular game, while a different processor below that tier may remain smooth at 8K. Consistent before-and-after measurements on your own system are more useful than assuming a processor label guarantees compatibility.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting inconclusive
- Changing DPI instead of polling rate: DPI changes pointer sensitivity; it does not test report frequency.
- Comparing different scenes: a firefight, replay, menu, and empty practice area have different CPU loads.
- Changing several settings together: you will not know which change helped.
- Testing through a hub after a direct-port recommendation: the extra device remains an untested variable.
- Assuming a smooth desktop clears the game: game engines can process high-rate input differently.
- Assuming wireless failure proves interference: receiver firmware, battery state, port behavior, and hardware can create the same symptom.
- Installing random drivers: use Windows or the mouse maker’s supported package for the exact model.
- Using one short observation: repeat each setting long enough to include slow and rapid movement.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Contact the manufacturer or seller when the mouse or receiver still fails at 1,000 Hz, on a direct or correctly positioned connection, outside games, and on another computer. Pulsar notes that persistent failure at the lowest rate may indicate a defective receiver or mouse. Include your model, firmware version, operating-system build, polling-rate results, wired versus wireless results, ports tested, and whether the issue followed the device.
Do not replace hardware solely because 8K feels worse than 1K in one title. High polling is an option, not a requirement. Keeping the highest rate that remains stable is a valid configuration, and 1,000 Hz may be the practical choice for a game or system that does not benefit from more frequent reports.
Bottom line
Start at 8,000 Hz, then step down to 4,000, 2,000, and 1,000 Hz while repeating the same movement and scene. Compare another game and the desktop, close CPU-heavy applications, bypass hubs for wired testing, position a wireless receiver in clear line of sight, and then check reconnects, drivers, firmware, and a second computer. This sequence identifies whether the symptom tracks high-rate input, one game, the physical connection, wireless conditions, or the device itself without promising that one polling rate will suit every configuration.
