Fix a stuttering, low-FPS, or crashing PC shooter in a controlled order: identify the exact symptom, check the game’s own requirements, confirm the correct GPU is active, update the graphics driver and Windows, repair the installation, disable unnecessary overlays and recording tools, follow the game’s shader instructions, and then check heat and memory pressure. Change one thing at a time so you can tell which action helped.

The same symptom can have different causes. A low average frame rate is not the same as brief frame-time spikes; a game-process crash is not the same as a blue screen or forced restart. The workflow below separates those cases and shows when to stop changing settings and send evidence to the game’s support team.

Identify what is actually going wrong

Before changing settings, write down the shooter, launcher, Windows version, CPU, graphics processor and VRAM, installed memory, graphics-driver version, monitor resolution, graphics preset, and the moment the problem appears. Note whether it started after a game patch, Windows update, driver installation, settings change, or hardware change. Record a short, repeatable test, such as loading one map, entering a particular mode, or playing for five minutes.

Symptom What to observe First useful direction
Low FPS Frame rate stays low most of the time, often improving when resolution or demanding effects are reduced. Check the exact requirements, active GPU, driver, resolution, and graphics settings.
Stuttering or hitching Short pauses or uneven frame times despite an acceptable average FPS; note whether it happens during first launch, after an update, when loading areas, or when effects appear. Check shader preparation, overlays and recorders, memory pressure, disk swapping, and heat.
Game-only crash The shooter closes, freezes, or returns to the desktop while Windows continues to work. Repair files, update the driver and Windows, remove interfering overlays, and collect the game’s crash report.
Blue screen, forced reboot, or power loss The whole computer restarts or Windows reports a system failure. Treat it as a wider PC or operating-system fault as well as a game-support issue; record the exact stop code or restart behavior.

Keep a simple change log. For every test, record the setting, the old and new value, whether a restart was required, and whether the same scene improved. This prevents several simultaneous changes from hiding the cause.

Check the named game’s requirements and make a reversible settings test

Use the shooter’s own minimum and recommended specifications

Open the requirements for the exact game and edition from its publisher or launcher. A PC below minimum requirements may have poor frame rates or may fail to run at all. Meeting minimum specifications does not mean that a high preset, a high resolution, or a stable competitive frame time is guaranteed. If the minimum is met but the recommended specification is not, lowering graphics settings is a sensible diagnostic test, not proof that the hardware is defective. Capcom’s Steam troubleshooting guidance makes this distinction and notes that a restart may be needed after changing settings.

Test the largest performance levers first

Use the game’s built-in settings and change only a few clearly documented values, beginning with resolution or render scale and the effects that place the heaviest load on the GPU. A lower resolution can show whether the graphics processor is the limiting factor; reducing view distance, shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, or anti-aliasing can show whether a particular workload is responsible. If the game has a frame-rate cap, test a cap that your system can sustain consistently rather than chasing a fluctuating peak.

Change What it can reveal Trade-off to record
Lower resolution or render scale Whether the GPU is saturated at the previous image size. Sharper detail is lost; the test does not predict an exact FPS gain on another PC.
Reduce shadows, volumetrics, reflections, or view distance Whether a demanding effect causes low FPS or spikes in complex scenes. Visual quality and scene detail decrease.
Lower texture quality Whether VRAM pressure is contributing to hitching or texture-streaming pauses. Textures look less detailed; adequate VRAM may make this change unnecessary.
Set a frame-rate cap Whether steadier frame times improve perceived smoothness or reduce heat. Maximum FPS is lower; the best cap depends on the display and the frame rate the PC can sustain.
Restart after applying settings when requested Whether the game needs to rebuild resources before the change takes effect. It adds a test cycle, but comparing before and after without the required restart can produce a false result.

Do not promise a particular FPS increase without measuring the same scene on the same PC. If lowering settings does nothing, restore them before moving on and investigate drivers, GPU selection, background software, or a CPU, memory, storage, or thermal limit.

Update the graphics driver, Windows, and GPU assignment separately

Install the driver intended for the installed GPU

Identify the actual graphics processor in Windows or the computer manufacturer’s specifications, then install the current driver supplied by the GPU maker or the version specifically recommended by the game publisher. Driver versions depend on the GPU model, Windows edition, and game, so a number copied from an older troubleshooting page is not universal advice. Reboot after installing a driver, even if the installer does not insist.

Capcom’s general guidance treats outdated graphics drivers as a possible contributor to graphical problems and startup failures. It recommends trying an ordinary update first and using a clean driver installation only when normal updating does not resolve the issue. A clean installation replaces existing driver components; use the installer’s documented option and avoid unrelated registry-cleaning utilities.

Apply Windows updates and retest

Install relevant Windows updates, restart, and launch the shooter again before changing several other variables. A game can depend on operating-system components even when the graphics driver itself is current. If a problem began immediately after a Windows or driver update, record that timing; it gives support a useful lead and may point to a known compatibility notice.

Confirm that a laptop uses the intended GPU

Many laptops have integrated graphics and a discrete high-performance GPU. In Windows graphics settings or the laptop vendor’s GPU-control panel, check that the shooter’s executable is assigned to the intended high-performance processor. Also confirm that the game is launching from the expected installation, because assigning a shortcut for a launcher instead of the game executable may not change the process that renders the game. Capcom’s game-specific troubleshooting guide identifies dual-GPU assignment as a possible configuration issue.

Repair missing or damaged game files

Updates, interrupted downloads, storage errors, or security software can leave files incomplete or damaged. Use the launcher’s built-in verification or repair command rather than downloading replacement files from an unofficial site.

Steam

  1. Open Steam and select Library.
  2. Right-click the shooter and choose Properties.
  3. Open Installed Files.
  4. Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for the check to finish.
  5. Restart Steam or Windows if the launcher requests it, then repeat the same reproducible test.

Labels can change between launcher versions. The purpose is to run the launcher’s file-integrity check, not to delete the installation. Capcom says Steam verification can identify missing or damaged files.

Other launchers

Use the equivalent repair or scan command in the launcher that owns the game. Activision’s Warzone support guidance, for example, directs players to file verification or the Battle.net repair function. Do not apply Steam instructions to a different launcher and assume the same menu exists; follow that launcher’s current support page.

Remove background interference for a controlled comparison

Close unnecessary applications before retesting, especially screen recorders, broadcasting tools, hardware-monitoring overlays, chat overlays, browser windows using substantial memory, and software that injects an on-screen display into the game. Capcom identifies resource-consuming recording programs and performance overlays as possible performance or stability concerns, and Activision lists interfering applications in its Warzone troubleshooting guidance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable one overlay at a time where possible, then reproduce the same scene. If stuttering disappears, re-enable programs individually to find the conflict. Keep essential security protection enabled. Investigate an antivirus exclusion only when the game’s official support instructions or a specific quarantine event points to interference, and limit any exclusion to the game’s required files. Broadly disabling protection is not a general performance fix.

Treat shader compilation and caches as game-specific

Modern shooters may compile shaders on first launch or after a driver and game update. During that period, stutters can occur while effects are prepared. Some games show a progress screen or require shader preloading to finish before leaving the main menu. Activision says Warzone’s shader preloading is an important part of first boot and should be allowed to complete before the player leaves the menu.

Do not assume every hitch is a shader problem. If a title provides a shader-preloading step, allow it to finish, then restart the game and test the same location. Capcom notes that damaged driver- or game-generated shader-cache files can cause graphical problems and provides instructions for a particular game-cache file where present. Those instructions are title-specific; do not delete arbitrary cache folders as an all-purpose fix. Follow the current support page for your shooter and keep a record of any cache reset because the next launch may rebuild resources.

Check ventilation, heat behavior, and memory pressure

Look for a repeatable thermal pattern

Heat is a possible clue, not a diagnosis. If the game is smooth immediately after startup but becomes uneven after longer play, inspect whether fans are running, vents are blocked, or hot air is trapped around the case. Capcom states that gameplay may not be as smooth if a PC generates too much heat and recommends good ventilation; lowering graphics settings or limiting the frame rate can reduce heat produced during a test.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer a fault from one temperature reading or purchase a component before confirming the pattern. Compare a cool-start run with a long-session run, note fan behavior, and check whether the symptom changes when the frame-rate cap or demanding settings are reduced.

Check memory use and disk swapping

Steam’s hardware-performance guidance identifies low available memory and swapping to disk as possible causes of repeated hitches. Close unneeded programs, observe whether system memory becomes scarce during the same scene, and leave adequate free storage for the game and Windows to operate normally. Memory pressure can look like a graphics problem because the pause occurs when assets are loaded, but it does not by itself prove that a memory module is defective.

When a case-fan replacement is justified

A replacement PC case fan is a conditional repair only after you have confirmed inadequate airflow, a failed fan, or a case-specific heat pattern. Before buying, measure the mounting size, confirm the connector type, check available motherboard or hub headers, and verify that the case has a compatible mounting position and sensible airflow direction. A new fan will not fix a driver conflict, damaged game files, shader compilation, or a game that simply exceeds the system’s requirements.

Use the correct branch for crashes

If only the game closes

Complete the driver, Windows, file-verification, overlay, and game-specific shader checks above. Record the exact point of failure: launch, menu, map loading, a particular mode, a graphics change, or a specific duration. Reproducible timing is more useful than a general report that the game is broken.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Windows blue-screens or the PC restarts

Write down the stop code, event-log entry, or whether power was lost without an error. A full-PC restart can involve operating-system, driver, power, cooling, or hardware problems outside the game process. Continue with the game’s support channel, but also follow Windows and hardware troubleshooting for the system-level symptom. Do not describe a forced reboot as an ordinary game crash.

Prepare an escalation report that can be acted on

If the problem remains after controlled tests, send the publisher the information it requests. Capcom asks for issue location and timing, system details, and reproducible steps; its game-specific guide also requests crash reports. Activision’s support guidance similarly uses system and crash information to investigate persistent failures.

  • Exact game title, edition, launcher, and game version if shown.
  • CPU model, GPU model, VRAM, installed system memory, monitor arrangement, resolution, and graphics settings.
  • Windows version and graphics-driver version, including whether the driver was normally or cleanly installed.
  • Security software and any relevant quarantine event, without disabling protection broadly.
  • Whether the issue is low average FPS, brief hitches, a game-only crash, a blue screen, or a forced reboot.
  • Where and when it occurs, whether it is constant or mode-specific, and the exact steps that reproduce it.
  • What changed immediately before it began and which single tests changed the symptom.
  • The game’s crash report, log, or dump file when the publisher’s instructions identify one.

Attach only the files and system details requested by the official support channel. A concise timeline and a repeatable test let the support team compare your configuration with known issues.

A practical order of operations

  1. Capture the baseline: symptom type, game location, timing, hardware, software versions, and settings.
  2. Check the exact game’s minimum and recommended requirements.
  3. Run one reversible settings test, documenting the result and any required restart.
  4. Update the correct graphics driver and Windows, then reboot.
  5. On a laptop, confirm the game is assigned to the intended high-performance GPU.
  6. Verify or repair the installation through the owning launcher.
  7. Close recorders, overlays, and other unnecessary programs and repeat the same test.
  8. Follow the shooter’s own shader-preloading or cache instructions, if it has them.
  9. Check ventilation, heat behavior, available memory, and signs of disk swapping.
  10. If the fault persists, distinguish a game-process crash from a system crash and send a complete reproducible report.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying generic gaming-PC advice without checking the named shooter’s requirements.
  • Changing resolution, drivers, overlays, and memory settings simultaneously, which prevents a useful comparison.
  • Installing a dated driver version because it appeared in an older article rather than checking the GPU and current publisher guidance.
  • Deleting arbitrary shader or configuration folders when the game has not documented that procedure.
  • Disabling antivirus or other security controls globally instead of investigating a specific, documented interference.
  • Buying a fan, memory module, or graphics card before confirming a matching thermal, memory, or performance limitation.
  • Calling a forced reboot a game crash and omitting the Windows stop code or restart behavior.

The reliable fix is the one that removes the same symptom in the same reproducible test without creating a new stability or security problem. If no single change helps, preserve your baseline and escalate with the evidence rather than stacking random tweaks.
