If No Rest for the Wicked stutters while you enter Sacrament, crashes during loading, or runs at an unexpectedly low frame rate, work through this order: confirm the Steam hardware baseline and an SSD, update the game, switch to Performance Mode, test DLSS or FSR, then isolate overlays, drivers, overclocks, and file corruption. Traversal hitches can be caused by the game streaming assets at an area boundary, so they need a different diagnosis from continuously low FPS.
Moon Studios has issued multiple Early Access updates aimed at streaming, memory use, CPU/GPU load, culling, and crashes. There is no authoritative universal FPS figure: results vary by build, scene, resolution, settings, and hardware.
Start with the official PC requirements
Before changing graphics options, compare your system with the current Steam listing. Meeting the recommended tier does not guarantee a fixed frame rate, but falling below the minimum makes stutter, long loads, and crashes more likely.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Tier | Operating system | Processor | Memory | Graphics | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Windows 10 | Intel Core i5-8400 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 | 16 GB RAM | NVIDIA GTX 1080 or AMD Radeon RX 5600 XT | 46 GB on an SSD |
| Recommended | Windows 10 or Windows 11 | Intel Core i7-11700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X | 32 GB RAM | NVIDIA RTX 2060 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT | 46 GB on an SSD |
The SSD requirement is important. An HDD can make area transitions and traversal worse even when the CPU and GPU meet the listed specifications. Check that the game is installed on the SSD rather than merely having an SSD elsewhere in the computer. Also check free space, because a nearly full drive can reduce usable space for updates and temporary files.

What the requirements do—and do not—tell you
- The minimum list is a compatibility baseline, not a promised frame rate or image-quality target.
- The recommended list does not establish a universal 60 FPS result; busy areas, resolution, upscaling mode, and later game builds change frame times.
- Notebook versions of a CPU or GPU can perform differently from desktop parts with similar names because of power and cooling limits.
- If your system is below the graphics or memory baseline, begin with Performance Mode and an upscaler before considering hardware changes.
Update the game before judging performance
Install every available Steam update, then restart the game and the PC. Moon Studios has repeatedly changed the engine-side work that affects hitching and crashes, so testing an old build can lead to the wrong conclusion.
Early Access Patch 1 (May 3, 2024) reported CPU and GPU improvements, work in heavy areas, optimized loading and unloading, preloading, culling, pooling, meshes, textures, visual effects, and memory cleanup. Patch 2 (May 22, 2024) added DLSS and FSR, a Performance Mode, further CPU/GPU optimization, memory-leak fixes, and fewer instantiation spikes. Hotfixes also addressed specific streaming and allocation problems, and the later The Breach update (April 30, 2025) and The Breach Refined update (June 26, 2025) included additional fixes and polish driven by player feedback.
Update and restart procedure
- Open Steam and wait for the download queue to finish.
- In Library, right-click No Rest for the Wicked and choose Properties.
- Open Updates and confirm automatic updates are enabled, then allow any pending download to complete.
- Close the game and restart Windows before retesting. A restart clears processes and driver state that can otherwise confuse a comparison.
Write down the game build shown by Steam or in the title screen when you report a problem. A reproducible report is much more useful when it identifies the exact build.

Use a lower-load graphics profile first
Open the game’s graphics options and select Performance Mode as the first diagnostic change. Patch 2 describes this mode as lowering texture resolution to reduce crashes on lower-end machines. It is not simply a frame-rate cap: it reduces the amount of texture work and memory pressure the game has to handle.

Test DLSS or FSR methodically
If your graphics options expose DLSS or FSR, test one upscaler at a time. Start with a Balanced preset; move to Performance if the GPU remains saturated or frame times are still too high. Upscaling lowers the internal render workload, but it can soften fine detail or introduce reconstruction artifacts. The available options depend on the GPU and the current game build, so do not assume that every card supports both technologies.
| Option | Primary effect | When to try it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Performance Mode | Reduces texture resolution and memory pressure | Crashes or severe hitching on lower-end hardware | Lower texture detail |
| DLSS | AI-assisted upscaling on supported NVIDIA hardware | GPU-limited play when the option is available | Possible reconstruction or sharpening artifacts |
| FSR | Spatial/temporal upscaling option available on compatible hardware | GPU-limited play when DLSS is unavailable or unsuitable | Image quality varies by preset and scene |
Reduce the settings that commonly raise frame time
- Lower volumetric fog first if dense scenes cause large frame-time spikes.
- Reduce shadow quality when the GPU is heavily loaded or shadowed areas cause drops.
- Lower transparency and effects quality if particles or visual effects coincide with the slowdown.
- Use a frame-rate cap that your system can hold consistently rather than chasing a peak that collapses during traversal. Choose a cap appropriate to your display and leave headroom for busy scenes.
- Change one setting at a time and record the result. A single large preset change makes it difficult to identify the actual bottleneck.
Exact best settings depend on resolution, refresh rate, and hardware. The purpose of this profile is to establish a stable baseline before fine-tuning image quality.
How to fix stuttering when entering Sacrament or crossing an area
A hitch that appears specifically when entering Sacrament, leaving a hub, or crossing an invisible boundary is different from a frame rate that is low everywhere. It may be asset-streaming work: the game is loading, unloading, or preparing textures, meshes, effects, and other content while you move.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Those changes explain why traversal can improve after a patch without changing your average frame rate in a quiet room.

Steps for an area-entry hitch
- Confirm that the game is on an SSD and that the latest build is installed.
- Use Performance Mode and a Balanced or Performance upscaler preset for one test run.
- Close recording software, browsers with hardware acceleration, and other applications competing for CPU, GPU, or memory.
- Repeat the same route several times. Note whether the hitch happens at the same boundary, whether it is a single spike or repeated pauses, and whether it settles after the area has been visited once.
- If the hitch remains on the current build, include the location and route in a report rather than describing it only as “low FPS.”
An SSD can reduce waiting for asset data, but it cannot guarantee that every engine-side frame-time spike disappears. Replacing the drive alone is not a complete solution when the limiting work is CPU-side streaming or a game bug.
How to fix persistently low FPS
If the frame rate is low in menus, quiet rooms, and combat—not only during an area transition—treat it as a sustained CPU or GPU workload.
Identify the limiting component
- If lowering resolution or enabling an upscaler produces a large improvement, the GPU is probably the main limit.
- If resolution changes do little and busy scenes remain slow, CPU simulation, draw calls, or streaming may be limiting performance.
- If memory use grows over a long session and performance degrades, restart the game and check whether the pattern returns. Patch notes have included memory-leak and allocation fixes, but a report is still warranted when the behavior persists.
Apply changes in a controlled order
- Set Performance Mode.
- Enable DLSS or FSR and test Balanced, then Performance if necessary.
- Lower volumetric fog, shadows, transparency, and effects.
- Set a stable frame cap suitable for your monitor.
- Close background applications and overlays, then retest the same scene.
Do not use an average FPS number alone. A game can show a reasonable average while 1% lows feel poor; the repeatable symptom, location, and frame-time behavior are more useful for diagnosis.

Fix crashes on launch, loading, or during play
Crashes have different causes, so record the trigger before changing several variables at once. Note whether the crash occurs at launch, in the main menu, while loading a save, when entering an area, or during ordinary gameplay.

Basic crash checklist
- Update the game and restart Windows.
- Verify the installation: in Steam, open Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, select Installed Files, and click Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish before launching.
- Install the current driver for your GPU from its manufacturer, then restart Windows. The official notes do not identify one universal driver version as the cause of every crash.
- Disable Steam’s overlay and other overlays, recording hooks, and performance monitors for a test. Re-enable them one at a time after stability returns.
- Remove unstable GPU or CPU overclocks and undervolts. Return hardware to stock settings while troubleshooting.
- Close competing CPU/GPU applications and make sure the system is not overheating or power-throttling.
- Retry the exact action that previously failed and record whether Performance Mode changes the result.
Hotfix 6 specifically fixed a main-menu crash and reduced memory allocations. If a current build still crashes in the menu, mention that trigger explicitly rather than grouping it with an in-game area crash.
Use the trigger to narrow the cause
| Trigger | Useful next check |
|---|---|
| Before the main menu | Verify files, disable overlays, update the GPU driver, and test stock clocks. |
| Loading a save or entering an area | Confirm the SSD, update the game, test Performance Mode, and record the location. |
| After a long session | Restart the game, watch for rising memory use, and report a repeatable duration or sequence. |
| Only with an overlay or recorder enabled | Leave that hook disabled while testing and identify the software in your report. |
Choose between an SSD upgrade and a larger PC upgrade
An SSD is the first hardware change to consider when the game is installed on an HDD, because Steam explicitly lists an SSD and the game’s patch history repeatedly discusses loading and streaming. Check whether your motherboard and case support the drive type before buying: an M.2 NVMe drive and a 2.5-inch SATA SSD use different connectors and mounting arrangements.
| Upgrade | Best fit | What it can improve | What it cannot guarantee |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move the game to or install a 1TB NVMe SSD | HDD installation, long loads, limited space for updates | Storage access and potentially area-loading time | It cannot remove every CPU-side streaming spike or engine hitch |
| CPU/GPU/RAM platform upgrade | Hardware below the minimum or sustained low FPS after settings changes | Compute headroom and, depending on the part, memory capacity | It cannot fix a game-specific bug or overlay conflict |
Before purchasing, identify the current bottleneck and verify interface compatibility. An SSD upgrade is not a substitute for a GPU upgrade when the GPU remains saturated at your target resolution.

| Factor | Local play | Cloud play |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware fit | Depends on your CPU, GPU, RAM, and SSD | Remote hardware handles rendering |
| Latency | Usually limited by your local system and display path | Depends on network route, Wi-Fi, and service load; input delay can increase |
| Image quality | Native output controlled by your settings | Video stream quality depends on bandwidth and encoding |
| Connection stability | Not required for single-player rendering after installation, aside from game services | Requires a stable connection; congestion can cause artifacts or disconnects |
| Storage | Requires local installation and the listed 46 GB space | Local game storage needs may be reduced, subject to the service’s catalog and policy |
| Cost and availability | Uses your existing hardware and game purchase | Depends on the cloud provider’s current plan, queue, catalog, and regional availability |
Cloud gaming is a fallback, not proof that a local configuration is defective. Test it only after confirming that the service currently lists the game in your region and that your connection can sustain the chosen stream quality.
Performance fixes documented in the update history
| Update | Date | Relevant changes |
|---|---|---|
| Early Access Hotfix 3 | April 22, 2024 | Area-streaming improvements, less aggressive dynamic resolution, better off-screen culling, shader optimization, a memory/CPU leak fix, particle optimization, and CPU improvements. |
| Early Access Hotfix 5 | April 25, 2024 | Fog and shadow optimization, fewer memory allocations, improved asset unloading, reduced CPU-side stutter while loading assets, and reduced mutex contention during streaming. |
| Early Access Hotfix 6 | April 26, 2024 | Reduced memory allocations, optimized shadow rendering, and a main-menu crash fix. |
| The Breach | April 30, 2025 | Further fixes and polish linked by Moon Studios. |
| Early Access Patch 1 | May 3, 2024 | CPU/GPU improvements, heavy-area traversal work, loading and unloading, preloading, culling, pooling, mesh, texture, visual-effects, and memory optimization. |
| Early Access Patch 2 | May 22, 2024 | DLSS and FSR, Performance Mode, CPU/GPU and memory optimization, memory-leak fixes, and fewer instantiation spikes. |
| The Breach Refined | June 26, 2025 | Additional fixes and polish linked by Moon Studios. |
The chronology shows why updating matters: streaming and memory behavior has changed across several builds. A result from an older patch is not a reliable prediction for the current one.
Report a persistent problem with reproducible details
When the checklist does not solve the issue, send Moon Studios a report through its support channel or the official forum. Include enough information for another person to reproduce the fault.
- Game build and Windows version.
- CPU, GPU, RAM amount, and whether the installation is on an SSD or HDD.
- Resolution, Performance Mode state, DLSS or FSR mode, and the settings changed.
- Exact trigger: launch, menu, loading, Sacrament entry, another area boundary, combat, or a time-based pattern.
- Frequency and reproducibility: every attempt, once per session, or only after a long play period.
- Whether file verification, a driver update, overlay removal, and stock clock settings changed the result.
- Any error text, crash window, or steps that reliably reproduce the problem.
Moon Studios has said its official forum is the best place to give feedback, ideas, and bug reports; Steam’s listing also provides the support address support@moongamestudios.com.
