Start by identifying whether the game is consistently running at a low frame rate, hitching in short bursts, or doing both. Those symptoms can have different causes: a GPU or CPU limit, shader compilation, a recent driver or game update, an unsuitable display mode, or a game-specific problem. Check the same scene after changing one thing at a time; otherwise it is impossible to tell which change helped.

First, separate low frame rates from stuttering

Average frames per second (FPS) describes how much work the system completes over time. Stutter is a frame-time problem: one or more frames take noticeably longer than their neighbors, producing a hitch even when the displayed average FPS looks acceptable. A game can have a low average FPS without obvious hitching, severe hitching at an otherwise high average, or both.

Persistent low FPS

If the game is slow in nearly every area, the limitation is likely continuous. Resolution, lighting, shadows, effects and other GPU-heavy settings can exceed the graphics processor’s capacity. Alternatively, simulation, artificial intelligence, streaming or other game work can keep the processor cores busy. A low number by itself does not identify which component is limiting performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Intermittent hitches

Brief pauses tied to entering a new area, seeing a particular effect, loading assets or compiling shaders point to an event that occurs occasionally rather than a constant rendering limit. Hitches that began immediately after a graphics-driver update deserve a separate check, especially on Intel Arc systems, where Intel documents brief stuttering while shaders are processed in the background.

Scope is an important clue

Record whether the problem affects one new title or several games. One title with repeatable hitches is more likely to involve that game’s asset streaming, shaders, settings or current patch. Similar behavior across multiple games suggests a wider driver, operating-system, temperature, power or hardware issue. This observation is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Make a reproducible baseline before changing settings

Do not change a dozen options and then judge the result. Choose a repeatable test: the same save, route, benchmark, match opening or busy scene. Note the display resolution, refresh rate, display mode, graphics preset, game version, Windows version, graphics-driver version and whether the hitch occurs at the same moment. If the game has a frame-time graph, enable it; a spike is often more informative than an FPS average.

  • Write down whether the game is always slow or only hitches.
  • Note the exact location, effect or action that triggers a pause.
  • Record whether the issue started after a game update, Windows update or graphics-driver update.
  • Repeat the scene after every single change.
  • Keep the original settings available so you can revert a change that makes no difference.

Use the game’s own performance overlay when available. If you use system monitoring, interpret CPU and GPU readings alongside frame time and clock behavior rather than treating one percentage as a universal pass/fail threshold. The same average utilization can hide a saturated single CPU thread, a power limit, a thermal reduction in clock speed or a short background task.

Check requirements, display mode and current updates

Verify the game’s actual requirements

Read the publisher’s system requirements and support notices for the specific game version. A requirement list is not a promise of a particular FPS; it normally identifies a minimum or recommended configuration under conditions the publisher controls. Confirm that your operating system, processor, graphics processor, memory and storage meet the stated requirements before treating every hitch as a settings problem.

Confirm resolution and display mode

Check the resolution the game is actually rendering, not just the monitor’s native resolution. A high resolution increases the amount of pixel work the GPU must perform. Check whether the game is in exclusive fullscreen, borderless windowed or ordinary windowed mode, and record the setting as part of your baseline. A change in mode can alter presentation and synchronization behavior, but it is not a universal cure.

Finish updates, then test again

If a driver or game update was installed moments ago, restart when the installer requests it and allow the title to complete any first-run preparation. An update-related timing pattern is useful evidence, but do not assume that waiting will solve persistent low FPS or every kind of stutter. If the same hitch remains in the same scene after preparation has finished, continue the diagnosis.

Understand shader-compilation stutter

Games use shaders to describe how surfaces, lighting and effects are rendered. Microsoft explains that a game may compile those shaders on the player’s device at launch or “just in time” during gameplay. That work can produce longer loading times, shader-compilation stutter and higher power consumption. A hitch that occurs while a new effect or area first appears is therefore plausible shader behavior, not proof of a failing component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the timing fits

Look for a repeatable pattern: a pause the first time a level, effect or material appears, followed by smoother passes through the same area. Some games show a shader-processing or compiling screen; others perform the work invisibly. Compare the same scene after the game has completed its preparation. If performance stabilizes after that work, the timing supports a shader explanation.

Driver updates can trigger processing

Intel’s Arc graphics support guidance notes that brief stuttering may occur after a graphics-driver update while shaders are processed in the background. Its stated outcome is that, once shader processing is complete, performance should stabilize and return to normal without further action. This statement is specific to Intel Arc support; Microsoft’s explanation applies more broadly to shader compilation. Neither establishes that every post-update hitch has this cause.

Do not clear caches by default

Deleting shader caches is often suggested online, but no official, universal cache-clearing remedy is established here. Clearing data can force the game to compile the same shaders again and temporarily make loading or stutter worse. Use a cache-reset instruction only when the game’s publisher or graphics-driver vendor specifically directs it for your title and driver combination.

Check DirectX without treating reinstallation as a magic FPS fix

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft says Windows Update provides the latest DirectX version. If the game reports a DirectX compatibility problem, check the installed version with the built-in Diagnostic Tool:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Press Win+R.
  2. Type dxdiag and press Enter.
  3. Allow the tool to finish checking, if prompted.
  4. On the System tab, read DirectX Version.
  5. Use the game’s own requirements and support instructions to decide what to do next.

A current DirectX entry does not guarantee that a particular game will run smoothly; the game may still be limited by its renderer, shaders, CPU work, GPU workload or a title-specific defect. Conversely, manually downloading a separate DirectX installer is not a generic FPS fix when Windows Update already supplies the current version. Follow the publisher’s instructions if the game names a specific legacy component or compatibility error.

Find out whether the CPU or GPU is the limiting part

Microsoft describes both CPU-limited and GPU-limited performance. In a GPU-limited case, high resolution, complex shaders, lighting, effects or other pixel work consume the available rendering time. In a CPU-limited case, game simulation, draw-call preparation, artificial intelligence, physics or asset management prevents the GPU from receiving work quickly enough. The graphics settings that help are different, so do not buy a component based only on an FPS number.

Signs that the GPU is limiting

  • Reducing resolution produces a clear FPS or frame-time improvement in the same scene.
  • Lowering shader-heavy, lighting, shadows or effects settings helps while CPU-heavy options make little difference.
  • The GPU remains heavily occupied during the slow section, with clocks and temperatures behaving normally.

These observations are strongest when made in a repeatable scene. A brief hitch during asset loading can occur even when the GPU is not continuously full.

Signs that the CPU is limiting

  • Reducing resolution barely changes the frame rate.
  • Lowering crowd, simulation, view-distance, physics or other CPU-oriented settings improves the scene.
  • The game becomes slower in busy areas even though the GPU has unused capacity.

Overall CPU utilization can be misleading because a game may depend on one busy thread while other cores are idle. Treat per-thread evidence, frame-time behavior and the game’s own guidance as more useful than a single total-percentage reading.

When neither pattern is clear

Check for clock-speed drops, temperature or power-limit behavior, background applications and unusually high storage activity. Those checks can explain both low FPS and hitches, but no universal monitoring threshold or particular monitoring program is established here. If measurements do not identify a repeatable limit, report the evidence to the game’s support team instead of guessing at an upgrade.

Change graphics settings in a controlled order

Use the same scene and change one option per test. Save the original value, make the change, restart the game only if it requires that, and compare frame time as well as average FPS.

  1. Resolution or render scale: Lower it temporarily. A large improvement points toward GPU pixel workload; little change points away from resolution as the primary limit.
  2. Shader-heavy and lighting options: Test global illumination, reflections, volumetric effects, shadows and similar options individually. These can reduce GPU work but may not affect CPU-bound scenes.
  3. Effects and texture-related options: Lower effects that coincide with a hitch. Texture quality mainly affects memory use and streaming behavior, so its result depends on the game’s implementation and available graphics memory.
  4. CPU-oriented options: Test crowd density, view distance, simulation, physics or foliage when the slow area is busy and resolution changes did little.
  5. Upscaling or frame-generation features: If the game offers them, test according to its documentation and observe frame time and image quality. Do not assume an advertised mode removes the underlying CPU limit or shader hitch.

Do not use a lower preset as your only experiment. A preset can change many variables at once and conceal which workload was responsible. Once you identify a setting that helps, raise other settings one at a time until you find the best image-quality and smoothness balance.

Test Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization only when it applies

Microsoft’s windowed-game optimization is a narrow Windows 11 feature. Microsoft says it applies to DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless windowed mode. It is not a universal fix for exclusive fullscreen, DirectX 12, older or newer rendering paths, or every game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Windows Settings and search for Optimizations for windowed games.
  2. Enable the option only if you are running Windows 11 and the game uses DirectX 10 or 11 in windowed or borderless mode.
  3. Launch the game, use the same resolution and scene as your baseline, and compare frame time.
  4. Turn the option back off if it makes no measurable improvement or introduces a new display problem.

Record the game’s API and mode before testing. If you cannot confirm both the DirectX 10/11 requirement and a qualifying windowed mode, skip this branch rather than treating it as a general performance switch.

Consider Advanced Shader Delivery only when the setup qualifies

Microsoft documents Advanced Shader Delivery as a way to reduce shader compilation on the player’s device. Its availability depends on supported Windows versions, a supported GPU and driver, and integration by the game and storefront. A title may therefore support it on one setup and not another. The feature cannot be assumed from the fact that a game uses shaders or runs on Windows.

Check the game’s and hardware vendor’s current support information for compatibility before changing anything. If the title, storefront, operating system, GPU and driver do not all meet the documented requirements, continue with ordinary shader-preparation and settings troubleshooting. Do not present a reported launch-time reduction from an eligible test configuration as an expected improvement for every player.

Use the symptom pattern to choose the next branch

Observed pattern Most useful checks What not to assume
Low FPS in every area Resolution, GPU-heavy settings, CPU-heavy settings, clocks, temperatures and the game’s requirements That a new GPU or CPU is automatically required
Short hitch the first time an effect or area appears Shader-compilation indicators, repeat the scene after preparation, recent driver or game update That clearing every cache will help
Hitches began immediately after an Intel Arc driver update Allow documented background shader processing to finish, then repeat the same scene That every post-update hitch is an Arc shader issue
Only one title is affected Publisher requirements, patch notes, display mode, game-specific support and a precise reproduction That Windows or hardware is defective
Several games are affected Driver, Windows, power, temperature, background software and system-wide hardware behavior That changing one game’s preset will solve the system-wide issue
Resolution reduction barely helps CPU-oriented settings, per-thread behavior, simulation and game-specific limits That the GPU is the bottleneck because FPS is low
Only windowed or borderless DX10/11 mode is affected on Windows 11 Test the qualifying windowed-game optimization option That the option applies to fullscreen or every graphics API

When a hardware upgrade is justified

An upgrade is a conclusion, not a first troubleshooting step. Consider a faster GPU only when repeatable tests show that GPU workload remains the limit after sensible settings and resolution adjustments, and verify power, cooling, case space, connectors and compatibility. Consider a faster CPU only when CPU-oriented settings and per-thread evidence consistently identify processor work as the limit. Memory or storage changes likewise require evidence of capacity or streaming pressure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the game is the only title affected, a hardware purchase may not address a game-specific shader, streaming or driver interaction. If several games show the same measured limit, compare the cost and compatibility of a component change only after documenting that limit. The available information does not support recommending a particular model or replacement for an unspecified PC.

Prepare a useful support request when the problem remains

Contact the game’s publisher or support channel when the issue persists, the game crashes, or the behavior began with a specific update. Include enough detail for another person to reproduce it:

  • Game title, exact version or build and storefront.
  • Windows version and whether the system is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
  • CPU, GPU, installed memory and graphics-driver version.
  • Resolution, refresh rate, display mode and key graphics settings.
  • Whether the game uses fullscreen, borderless or windowed mode and which DirectX path it reports.
  • The exact scene or action that triggers the hitch, how long it lasts and whether it repeats.
  • What changed immediately beforehand, such as a game or driver update.
  • What one-at-a-time tests you performed and what each test changed.

Attach logs or diagnostic files only through the publisher’s official instructions. A precise reproduction and controlled comparison are more useful than saying simply that the game “feels laggy.”

A compact troubleshooting sequence

  1. Classify the symptom as persistent low FPS, intermittent hitching or both.
  2. Determine whether it affects one game or several and identify the exact trigger scene.
  3. Check the game’s requirements, current notices, resolution, display mode and recent updates.
  4. Allow any documented shader preparation to finish, then repeat the baseline scene.
  5. Use dxdiag to check DirectX only when the game reports a compatibility concern; rely on Windows Update for current DirectX on Windows 10 and 11.
  6. Change one graphics option at a time, beginning with resolution and the settings that match the suspected GPU or CPU workload.
  7. On Windows 11, test windowed-game optimization only for a DirectX 10/11 game in windowed or borderless mode.
  8. Check Advanced Shader Delivery only if the game, storefront, Windows version, GPU and driver meet Microsoft’s documented support conditions.
  9. Escalate with a complete reproduction record if the problem remains or the game crashes.
