Fix low FPS and stuttering on Intel integrated graphics by first confirming the game’s requirements, reducing its rendering workload, and closing competing programs. Then update (or, if necessary, roll back) the graphics driver, check heat and memory configuration, repair a game-specific installation, and test VSync when the complaint is tearing or uneven motion. There is no universal FPS increase: results depend on the Intel processor and GPU, computer design, game, settings, and driver.
Use the sequence below as a diagnostic process. Change one category at a time, reproduce the same scene, and record whether the problem is low average FPS, sudden drops, periodic hitching, or visible tearing.
Classify the problem before changing settings
“Low FPS” and “stuttering” describe different failure patterns. A game that stays at a consistently low frame rate is usually asking the hardware to render more than it can sustain. A game that runs smoothly and then pauses may be competing with another workload, throttling because of heat, rebuilding game data, or reacting to a driver or game update. Tearing is a display-synchronization problem that can occur even when the frame rate is otherwise acceptable.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| What you see | What to compare first | Most useful initial test |
|---|---|---|
| Low FPS all the time | Game requirements and graphics workload | Lower resolution and demanding quality settings; try windowed mode |
| Sudden frame drops | CPU or memory use, temperature, power state | Close heavy background tasks and reproduce while watching Task Manager |
| Periodic hitching or pauses | Recent driver/game change and game installation | Check updates, then repair or verify the game if only that title is affected |
| Diagonal breaks in moving images | VSync and display behavior | Test VSync on and off in the same scene |
| Problem began immediately after a driver update | Driver version and OEM compatibility | Use the computer maker’s driver or roll back to the previous working version |
Intel’s game-troubleshooting guidance recommends reproducing the issue, noting when it began and checking whether the developer, computer manufacturer, or Intel has already reported it. That record prevents random changes from obscuring the cause.

1. Record a reproducible test
- Write down the game and location. Note the title, game mode, map or level, and the action that triggers the slowdown. A repeatable route or saved position makes every later comparison meaningful.
- Record timing. State whether the issue has always existed, appeared after a game patch, or started after a Windows or graphics-driver change.
- Describe the motion. Distinguish a low but steady frame rate from a high rate with occasional drops, regular hitching, or visible tearing.
- Capture the operating condition. For a laptop, note whether it is plugged into power or running on battery. Also record whether other programs are open.
- Change one variable. Use the same scene after each adjustment. If several settings change at once, you will not know which one helped or hurt.
This process is not a benchmark and cannot predict a particular FPS number. It simply turns a subjective complaint into a comparison that can identify a likely cause.
2. Confirm that the PC can run the game
Check the game publisher’s minimum requirements against the exact processor, Intel integrated GPU generation, memory, operating-system version, and available storage in the computer. Meeting a minimum requirement does not promise a particular frame rate; it only establishes that the title is intended to start under the stated conditions. If the game expects more graphics capability than the system provides, software tweaks can reduce the workload but cannot create missing GPU resources.
Use a reduced workload as a diagnostic
- Open the game’s video or graphics settings.
- Lower the display resolution and the quality options that place the largest load on the GPU, such as shadows, effects, reflections, and view distance.
- Apply the changes and repeat the same scene.
- Try windowed mode while investigating a newly appearing problem. Compare it with the normal fullscreen mode rather than assuming either mode is always faster.
A substantial improvement after reducing the workload indicates that the original settings exceeded what the integrated GPU could render consistently. Little or no change suggests that CPU work, heat, memory bandwidth, a background task, a driver problem, or the game itself may be the limiting factor.
3. Update graphics drivers and Windows carefully
Intel identifies graphics-driver updates and current Windows updates as standard checks for lag, frame drops, and low FPS. On a laptop or other OEM computer, start with the driver published by the computer manufacturer. OEM packages may include power-management and display customizations that a generic package does not.

- Open the computer manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and operating-system edition.
- Compare the installed graphics-driver version with the manufacturer’s current recommended version.
- Install the OEM package according to its instructions, restart, and reproduce the same game scene.
- If no suitable OEM package is available, use Intel’s official driver-download resources or Driver & Support Assistant as appropriate for the system.
- Install pending Windows and game updates, restart, and test again.
When an update makes the problem worse
If stuttering began immediately after a new graphics driver, Intel recommends considering a return to the previous driver. Use Windows’ device-driver rollback option when it is available, or reinstall the prior package supplied by the computer manufacturer. Do not keep changing versions without recording which one was installed; the version and installation date are essential when contacting the OEM, game developer, or Intel.
BIOS updates and driver installations should follow the computer maker’s instructions. A BIOS package intended for a different model can leave a system unusable, so do not treat it as a generic FPS tweak.
4. Close competing CPU and memory workloads
Integrated graphics share the system’s processor, memory, and power budget. Intel specifically recommends checking for other programs that consume large amounts of CPU or memory while the game runs.

- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, sort by CPU and then by Memory. Look for browsers with many tabs, video encoders, cloud synchronization, software updates, virtual machines, or other workloads that spike when the hitch occurs.
- Close only programs you recognize and do not need. Save work first; do not terminate Windows processes merely because they use resources.
- Retest the same scene. If the hitch disappears, reopen programs one at a time to identify the conflict.
Background activity can also explain why the same game behaves differently on different launches. A quiet desktop is not proof that the game is at fault; watch Task Manager during the actual drop.

5. Check heat and throttling
Intel notes that a processor operating above its specified temperature may throttle, reducing performance. There is no single safe temperature threshold for every Intel processor, laptop chassis, cooling design, or firmware. Use the exact processor specification and the computer maker’s thermal guidance instead of applying a universal number.
Practical thermal checks
- Make sure air vents are unobstructed and the laptop is on a hard surface rather than bedding.
- Check whether fans become unusually loud or performance falls only after several minutes of play.
- Compare a cold start with a run after the system has warmed up. A drop that appears only when hot supports a thermal investigation.
- Use monitoring software supported by the computer manufacturer to observe processor temperature and clock behavior, but interpret readings against that processor’s specifications.
- Clean dust and service cooling hardware only as the manufacturer permits; opening a system can affect warranty coverage.
Heat can reduce CPU performance even when the game’s graphics settings are unchanged. It can therefore look like a graphics-driver problem, especially when the first few minutes are smooth and later scenes hitch.
6. Verify memory configuration and channels
Intel recommends dual-channel memory to maximize Intel Graphics performance. Integrated GPUs use system memory for graphics data, so channel configuration can affect available memory bandwidth. The recommendation is not a promise of a fixed FPS gain, and a compatible upgrade cannot be named without the exact computer or motherboard specifications.
Check before buying or changing RAM
- Identify the exact computer model or motherboard model and processor.
- Read its service manual or memory specification for supported capacity, memory type, module count, and channel population.
- Check how many memory modules are installed and whether they are operating as a matched dual-channel configuration using the system’s documentation or a trusted hardware-information utility.
- If an upgrade is possible, choose a compatible dual-channel kit specified for that system. Do not assume that a desktop DIMM fits a laptop, or that a newer DDR generation is supported.
- After installation, confirm that the full capacity is recognized and retest the same game scene.
Some computers have soldered memory or only one upgradeable slot, making a channel change impossible. If the documentation does not establish compatibility, do not purchase based on the Intel GPU name alone.

7. Isolate a game-specific problem
If every game is affected, prioritize system-wide checks such as drivers, heat, memory, and background workloads. If one title is unusually slow while others remain normal, focus on that game’s patch status and installation.
- Check the game developer’s current update notes and install any available patch.
- Use the launcher’s repair, verify, or integrity-check function to replace missing or corrupted files.
- Temporarily reduce graphics settings and try windowed mode to determine whether the new build is exceeding the system’s workload.
- Retest after the repair and restart. If only one game still fails, consult that game developer’s known-issues and support information, including reports for your specific Intel graphics generation.
Do not infer from one game that Intel integrated graphics are universally defective. Engines, patches, anti-cheat components, and graphics options can produce title-specific behavior.
8. Test VSync according to the symptom
Vertical synchronization (VSync) coordinates rendered frames with the display’s refresh cycle. Intel explains that disabling VSync allows virtually unlimited FPS but, depending on the configuration, makes screen tearing, jerkiness, or stuttering more likely. Enabling it can make motion look more stable, but it may also constrain the frame rate to the display’s refresh behavior.
A controlled VSync test
- Choose a repeatable scene with obvious horizontal motion, such as turning the camera past vertical edges.
- Run the scene with VSync enabled and note tearing, smoothness, and responsiveness.
- Run the same scene with VSync disabled and note the same three observations.
- Keep the setting that best matches the game and display. There is no mode that is universally optimal for every Intel system.
VSync cannot make an integrated GPU render a workload it cannot sustain. If FPS remains low with both modes, return to requirements, workload, driver, heat, and memory checks.

9. Treat post-driver-update shader stutter narrowly
Intel documents brief pauses while shaders are processed after installing a graphics driver, but that guidance is specifically for Intel Arc A-Series and B-Series discrete graphics. It should not be presented as a confirmed general explanation for stuttering on Intel UHD, Iris Xe, or other integrated graphics.
If you are troubleshooting an Arc A-Series or B-Series system covered by that guidance, allow the game to finish its initial processing and see whether performance stabilizes. For Intel integrated graphics, use the broader sequence in this article: reproduce the issue, check the driver and game change, reduce workload, inspect background activity and heat, and verify the installation.
Use comparisons to narrow the cause
| Comparison | If the second test is better | Next focus |
|---|---|---|
| All games versus one game | Only one title is affected | Patch status, repair/verify, and that game’s support reports |
| Low settings versus original settings | Lower settings substantially improve motion | Keep a sustainable workload or accept that the original settings exceed the GPU’s capacity |
| Before versus after a driver update | Older driver was smooth | OEM package, rollback, and reporting the regression |
| Cold start versus warmed-up session | Performance falls after heat builds | Cooling, airflow, and processor thermal specifications |
| Background apps open versus closed | Closing them removes the drops | Identify the specific CPU or memory consumer |
| VSync on versus off | One mode removes tearing or uneven motion | Use that mode for the game/display combination |
| Plugged in versus battery | Only one power state has the problem | OEM power settings, charger condition, and the laptop’s documented performance modes |
These are isolation tests, not benchmark results. They show where to investigate; they do not establish a guaranteed percentage improvement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCommon mistakes that waste time
- Expecting a universal FPS number. Intel’s guidance does not provide a typical gain for these steps, and no honest percentage applies to every processor, game, and driver.
- Installing a generic driver first on an OEM laptop. Check the manufacturer’s package and compatibility guidance before replacing it.
- Applying a universal temperature limit. Use the exact processor’s specification and the system maker’s thermal information.
- Buying unspecified RAM. Channel operation, module type, capacity, and upgradeability vary by computer.
- Blaming VSync for low rendering capacity. VSync changes synchronization behavior; it does not add GPU performance.
- Assuming Arc shader behavior applies to integrated graphics. Intel’s post-update shader explanation is scoped to Arc A-Series and B-Series.
- Changing many settings at once. Without a repeatable scene and one-variable tests, the apparent fix may be coincidence.
When to escalate
Contact the computer manufacturer when the issue involves an OEM driver, power behavior, cooling, memory compatibility, BIOS, or hardware that is still under warranty. Contact the game developer when one title remains broken after patching and installation repair. Include the exact computer model, processor and Intel graphics name, Windows edition, driver version, game version, when the problem began, and the comparison that reproduced it. Those details are more useful than a general report that the game “feels laggy.”
A concise recovery checklist
- Record the game, trigger, timing, and symptom type.
- Confirm minimum requirements and test lower graphics settings plus windowed mode.
- Close heavy CPU and memory workloads in Task Manager.
- Check heat, airflow, and processor-specific thermal limits.
- Use the computer maker’s graphics driver; update Windows and the game.
- Roll back the driver if the new version introduced the problem.
- Check whether memory is operating in a supported dual-channel configuration before considering an upgrade.
- Repair or verify the game if only that title is affected.
- Test VSync on and off when tearing or uneven motion is the complaint.
- Do not generalize Arc shader-processing guidance to Intel integrated graphics.
Intel’s support articles used for these recommendations were reviewed on different dates: FPS and CPU-usage guidance on May 8, 2024; Intel Graphics gaming-performance guidance on September 4, 2024; common game-issue troubleshooting on May 23, 2025; VSync guidance on September 15, 2025; and the Arc shader-stutter article on May 13, 2026. Driver behavior and game requirements can change, so apply the instructions to the versions installed on your system.
