Fix stuttering and low FPS by separating two symptoms, confirming the game’s requirements, checking whether the CPU or GPU is limiting performance, and testing reversible changes in a controlled order. Close background applications, reduce demanding settings one group at a time, and follow the game’s own shader-compilation instructions when the timing matches. Do not buy hardware until measurements and the game’s published requirements identify a specific bottleneck.
First determine whether you have low FPS, stuttering, or both
“Low FPS” usually means the frame rate remains below what the system can sustain. “Stuttering” means the game delivers uneven frame times: the displayed average may look acceptable, but the image pauses or jumps for a moment. A survival sandbox can show either symptom, and they can have different causes.
Signs of consistently low FPS
- The game feels slow in most locations, including areas that are not especially busy.
- Performance improves immediately when you lower a demanding graphics option.
- The frame rate remains low rather than recovering after a brief pause.
Signs of intermittent stutter
- A short hitch occurs when entering an area, loading assets, turning quickly, or performing a particular action.
- The game is smooth for a while, then pauses briefly even though the average FPS is not extremely low.
- The problem began after first launch, a game patch, a driver change, a settings change, or starting a new world or session. These timings are clues to test, not proof of a single cause.
Write down when the problem occurs before changing anything. Note whether it happens everywhere or only in a particular base, biome, server, save, or camera direction. Also record what changed immediately beforehand. This makes it possible to tell whether a later adjustment helped.
Use this troubleshooting order
- Check the named game’s current minimum and recommended requirements.
- Reproduce the problem with background applications closed.
- Observe whether the CPU or GPU is the limiting component.
- Lower one group of demanding in-game settings at a time.
- Check the game developer’s shader-compilation or shader-cache instructions if the timing fits.
- Reassess the evidence before considering a hardware purchase.
The sequence starts with checks that are reversible and applies game-specific procedures only when the game’s own support documentation calls for them.

1. Confirm that the PC meets the game’s requirements
Find the official requirements for the exact game and version you are running, then compare them with the PC’s processor, graphics card, memory, operating-system version, and available storage. Support guidance for both Arma Reforger and Grounded directs players to begin with this comparison. Requirements are game-specific; a computer that runs one survival sandbox smoothly may not meet another game’s minimum specification.
What the comparison can and cannot tell you
- Below the minimum requirement, unstable or low performance is plausible, and software tuning may not solve the underlying limitation.
- Meeting the minimum requirement does not guarantee a particular FPS. Minimum specifications are not a promise of high settings or a fixed frame rate.
- If you do not know the game’s requirements or your PC’s components, do not label the computer “underpowered” yet. Identify the exact model and compare published specifications first.
Keep the region, edition, and date of the requirement page in mind. Publishers can revise requirements after updates, and a support page for a different edition or platform may not apply to your installation.
2. Remove background load before changing hardware
Close unnecessary applications, overlays, launchers, browser tabs, recording tools, and other programs that are active while the game runs. Bohemia Interactive includes closing background applications among its checks for low FPS and stuttering in Arma Reforger. This is a diagnostic step: if the hitching disappears, the conflict or resource demand deserves separate investigation; if nothing changes, continue with the next test.

Make the test repeatable
- Restart the PC if a long session has left many programs open.
- Open only the game and the monitoring tool you need.
- Load the same save, location, or repeatable scene used for the original observation.
- Repeat the same movement or action for several minutes and record whether the symptom changes.
Do not close security software or essential Windows services indiscriminately. The purpose is to remove ordinary user applications, not to disable protection or system components.

3. Find out whether the CPU or GPU is limiting performance
Lowering every option at once hides useful information. First determine which side of the system is busy when the game slows. Microsoft’s Windows game guidance notes that CPU-limited performance is common and also discusses GPU workload from resolution, fill rate, and shader demands. Therefore, a low frame rate is not automatically a graphics-card problem.
Clues for a GPU-limited scene
- GPU utilization and power draw remain high while the frame rate is low.
- Reducing resolution or other graphics-heavy options produces a clear improvement.
- The CPU has available headroom, while the GPU is consistently the busiest component.
Clues for a CPU-limited scene
- One or more CPU cores remain heavily loaded even when total CPU usage looks moderate.
- Lowering resolution makes little difference, but reducing simulation-heavy settings or the number of active objects helps.
- The hitch occurs during world simulation, AI activity, asset preparation, or other moments that increase game-thread work.
These are diagnostic patterns, not guarantees. A game can shift between CPU and GPU limits depending on the location, view direction, resolution, and current world activity. Compare the same scene before and after each change rather than relying on one reading.
4. Lower demanding settings one group at a time
Open the game’s graphics or display menu and change only a small group of related options. Apply the change, reproduce the same scene, and record the result. If performance improves, restore the previous value and test individual options within that group so you know what helped.

The named examples above come from support instructions for particular games. Do not assume that an option with the same name has the same cost in an unnamed survival sandbox. Change settings in the game’s own menu and keep a note of every value.

Why changing one group matters
If you lower resolution, shadows, view distance, texture quality, and every other option simultaneously, you may gain FPS without learning which workload caused the problem. A controlled change gives you a useful decision: keep the visual trade-off, move to a different setting, or stop changing graphics because the symptom did not respond.
5. Check shader compilation and shader-cache behavior
Shader compilation can affect performance during initial play or after relevant game or driver updates in titles that use a compilation process. AMD explains that its background shader compilation can be CPU-bound and that performance may be reduced until compilation finishes in affected games. AMD recommends allowing approximately 15 minutes of gameplay before capturing measurements for the software and supported titles described by its guidance. That is a vendor-specific recommendation, not a universal timer.
Use the game’s own instructions
Look for a shader-compilation notice, progress indicator, cache option, or support article for the exact game. Do not copy another title’s menu path. Square Enix documents a specific cache-building procedure for one supported game and says that procedure can take 35 to 90 minutes depending on PC specifications. The range applies to that published procedure, not to every survival game.
- Check whether the developer says compilation occurs automatically, during a menu process, or during gameplay.
- If the game displays progress, allow it to finish without repeatedly restarting the title.
- If the developer gives a cache-building menu path, follow that path exactly and allow the stated process to complete.
- Afterward, reproduce the same scene and compare frame pacing with the earlier observation.
If the game provides no shader guidance, do not assume that waiting a fixed amount of time or deleting a cache will help. Shader behavior depends on the title, driver, and implementation. A cache-clearing step can also force recompilation, so only use it when the game’s developer or support documentation recommends it.

6. Match the fix to the symptom

7. Reassess before buying components
The available guidance identifies several possible causes: requirements, background load, graphics settings, CPU work, GPU workload, and shader compilation. It does not support a universal recommendation to purchase a GPU, CPU, memory kit, SSD, cooling part, or utility. Hardware should follow a demonstrated bottleneck, not replace diagnosis.
When an upgrade becomes a reasonable hypothesis
- The PC falls below the game’s published minimum requirement for a component.
- The same component is consistently the limiting resource in repeatable tests.
- Reversible settings and background-load checks produce only the trade-offs you cannot accept.
- The proposed part is compatible with the motherboard, power supply, case, cooling, operating system, and game requirements.
When to keep troubleshooting
- The symptom started immediately after a patch, driver change, or settings change.
- Performance varies sharply by location or only during an initial compilation period.
- No component is consistently saturated, or the PC’s specifications and the game’s requirements have not been verified.
Do not use a purchase to compensate for an unconfirmed setting, background application, or game-specific cache process. The same evidence that identifies a bottleneck should determine whether an upgrade is worthwhile.

Changing too many settings at once
Restore the original values from your notes, then test one group at a time. Otherwise you cannot tell whether the improvement came from resolution, shadows, view distance, or an unrelated change.

Measuring during shader preparation
If the developer or vendor says compilation is still occurring, measurements may not represent steady-state performance. Follow the title’s instructions, allow the documented process to finish, and then repeat the same test scene.
Assuming average FPS explains every hitch
Averages can hide brief pauses. Record when the hitch occurs and compare the same action or location after each change. If the game supplies frame-time or stutter diagnostics, use those alongside the average FPS.
Buying before identifying the limit
Return to the requirements comparison and CPU-versus-GPU observation. If neither points to a specific component, an upgrade is speculation rather than a fix.
A compact checklist
- Identify whether the problem is persistent low FPS, intermittent hitching, or both.
- Record when it happens and what changed beforehand.
- Compare the PC with the exact game’s current published requirements.
- Close ordinary background applications and repeat the same test.
- Observe CPU and GPU load instead of assuming the GPU is responsible.
- Lower view distance, shadows, resolution, or the game’s own quality and fade options one group at a time.
- Check the developer’s shader-compilation or cache instructions when the timing fits.
- Respect game-specific and vendor-specific timing, including AMD’s approximately 15-minute measurement guidance and Square Enix’s 35-to-90-minute published cache range for its particular procedure.
- Only consider hardware after a repeatable bottleneck and compatibility check identify what needs to change.
When to contact the game’s support team
Contact the developer when the PC meets the requirements, background applications are controlled, settings tests do not explain the behavior, and the issue remains reproducible in a specific location or action. Include the game version, platform, PC specifications, when the problem began, whether it affects every world or only one, the settings changed, and what happened after shader compilation or cache processing. Those details let support distinguish a general performance limit from a title-specific defect or save-related problem.
