Residual defects after OrcaSlicer calibration usually mean the symptom has been matched to the wrong setting, or that a material, hardware, or profile variable was changed at the same time. Identify the defect first: wispy bridges between parts point to moisture, temperature, or retraction; repeated wall marks may be seam or pressure artifacts; top-only holes usually involve shell support; and thin lines across the whole print indicate broader under-extrusion. Then change one variable at a time, using the same filament and printer profile.
Start with the defect, not the setting
Calibration does not guarantee a perfect print because the useful value for retraction, temperature, flow, pressure advance, and speed depends on the printer, firmware, extruder arrangement, hotend, nozzle, filament, and process profile. A value that works on one machine can create a new defect on another.
| What you see | Most useful first checks | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Fine threads between separate objects | Filament moisture, nozzle temperature, then retraction for the correct extruder type | That increasing retraction indefinitely will solve it |
| Raised dots repeating at one wall location | Seam position, seam gap, and wipe behavior | That every blob is a pressure-advance error |
| Bulges at corners or after speed changes | Pressure advance and the speeds and accelerations represented by the test | That a value from another printer can be copied |
| Holes only in the top skin | Top-shell thickness and support from infill below | That the whole printer is under-extruding |
| Thin, separated, or missing lines throughout the model | Flow, partial clog, extruder grip, filament diameter, and volumetric-speed limit | That adding top layers alone will repair it |
Use OrcaSlicer’s calibration order as a dependency chain
OrcaSlicer’s calibration guidance puts the tests in this order:
Recommended Free Tools
- Temperature
- Maximum volumetric speed
- Pressure advance
- Flow
- Retraction
The order matters because later tests rely on earlier extrusion behavior. Retraction should be tuned after flow and pressure advance, and a new project should be created after calibration to leave calibration mode. Treat this as a practical workflow rather than proof that each defect has only one cause. If a change makes the print worse, restore the last known-good profile and test a single factor.

- Filament Dryer and Remove Moisture - Comgrow 3d printer filament dryer box is designed to keep filament dry and remove moisture from kinds of filaments. Internal heating during printing provides a dry storage environment for 3D printer filaments and keeps the filament dry. Avoid entanglement, clogging, poor adhesion, and layer migration caused by the dampness of the printing wire. (Note: Only used for the drying of 3D printer Filament)
- Real-time Monitoring of Temperature and Humidity - Adjustable temperature range 40°~ 50 °C, the maximum temperature is only 50°C,。setting time from 6 hours to 12 hours. A 2-inch LCD screen and touch buttons make it easy to operate, it is more comprehensive and clear of the information display. Press the power button to start, and hold the function button(M) to change the dry time and the temperature setting.
- Great Sealed Filament Dry Box -The outlet structure adopts a silicone cable sheath and Teflon tube, the outlet is smooth and can be covered with a plug when not in use. The upper cover has a snap button structure, and the sealing performance is good. When the drying box is working, the sealing hole needs to be opened to allow moisture to drain out. When not in use, the sealing hole needs to be closed to keep the consumables dry.
Prepare a controlled test before changing values
Save a known-good baseline
Duplicate the active printer, filament, and process profiles before editing them. Record the nozzle, layer height, material designation, temperature, speeds, accelerations, retraction values, pressure-advance value, flow ratio, and maximum volumetric speed. A calibration result is meaningful only when you can reproduce the conditions under which it was obtained.
Keep the test material consistent
Use the same spool for comparison prints. Different colors, additives, and batches can melt and ooze differently. Keep the filament path, nozzle, build surface, and cooling configuration unchanged while isolating a setting.
Check basic mechanical causes first
- Confirm the nozzle is clean and not partly obstructed.
- Make sure the extruder gear grips filament without grinding it.
- Verify that the filament diameter entered in the profile matches the material specification you are using.
- Check that the hotend reaches and holds the commanded temperature.
- Confirm that the selected calibration test matches direct-drive or Bowden hardware.
These checks prevent a hardware fault from being disguised as a slicer value.
Fix stringing: wispy threads between separate parts
Stringing is thin filament left during travel moves between islands. Start with filament condition and temperature before increasing retraction. Moisture can make a filament ooze even when the retraction value is reasonable; dry it according to the material maker’s directions rather than applying a universal drying time or temperature.

1. Verify material condition and nozzle temperature
- Inspect the spool for signs that it has absorbed moisture, such as popping, steam, rough surfaces, or unusually heavy wisps.
- Dry the filament using the material manufacturer’s instructions.
- Reprint the same stringing test at the existing temperature.
- If strings remain, test small nozzle-temperature changes appropriate for that material. Lower temperature can reduce oozing, but too little heat can cause weak layer bonding or under-extrusion.
Do not use a temperature number from another material as a universal target. The correct range is material- and hotend-dependent.
2. Run the matching OrcaSlicer retraction test
- Open OrcaSlicer’s calibration tools and select the retraction test.
- Choose the version that matches the printer’s extruder arrangement: direct drive and Bowden systems have different filament-path behavior.
- Print the test with the same nozzle, material, temperature, speed, and cooling used for the target profile.
- Find the lowest retraction that removes the visible strings without creating gaps when the next line starts.
- Save the selected value in the appropriate filament or process profile, then create a new project to exit calibration mode.
The goal is not the largest possible retraction. Excessive retraction can delay pressure recovery, grind filament, wear the drive gear, or produce a gap at the beginning of the next extrusion segment.
3. If strings persist through the entire test
Persistent stringing after a reasonable retraction test is a signal to stop increasing retraction. Recheck moisture, temperature, nozzle contamination, travel behavior, and the material profile. A filament dryer or dry box may help when damp filament is the cause, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every stringing pattern.
How to validate a stringing repair
- Use a model with several separate towers or islands, not only a single wall.
- Look for both fewer threads and clean starts after travel moves.
- Check that corners, bridges, and thin walls did not become weaker.
- Repeat the print after the spool has been stored and dried under the same conditions; a one-off improvement can otherwise be mistaken for a slicer fix.
Fix blobs and zits on walls
A blob is a raised mark, but its location is more informative than its size. Marks that repeat at the same vertical line often coincide with the layer-change seam. Scattered bulges at corners or where speed changes point more toward extrusion-pressure behavior. These observations are clues, not proof that one setting explains every mark.

Separate seam artifacts from pressure artifacts
- Rotate the model or change seam placement and print a small comparison.
- Test seam-gap behavior and wipe-on-loop options where your profile exposes them.
- Observe whether the mark follows the seam when the seam moves. If it does, continue seam-focused testing.
- If bulges remain at corners or transitions even after seam movement, evaluate pressure advance under the same process conditions.
Do not stack several seam options and a pressure-advance change in one print. You will not know which change affected the result.
Understand what pressure advance changes
Pressure advance compensates for the lag between a commanded speed change and the pressure actually present in the nozzle. During acceleration, pressure may be too low; during deceleration, it may remain too high. A suitable value can reduce corner bulges, oozing, and inconsistent line width, especially during fast movements.
Run OrcaSlicer’s pressure-advance calibration for the relevant printer, filament, and process profile. Inspect the printed test rather than selecting a value solely from a formula, and store the result in the material profile used by the model.
Respect firmware and extruder differences
Marlin printers require Linear Advance to be enabled in firmware for pressure advance to work through the M900 command; that feature is not enabled by default on every Marlin installation. Confirm firmware support before interpreting a test. Direct-drive and Bowden systems also use different test variants. Never transfer a pressure-advance value from another printer or extruder configuration.

Choose a pressure-advance test method deliberately
| Method | What you inspect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Tower | Corners and seams at different heights; choose the height with the best overall result | The documented sample calculation illustrates the method; it is not a transferable recommended value |
| Pattern | Repeated geometric changes that make pressure response visible | Interpretation depends on the printer’s actual speeds and accelerations |
| Line | Line-width and corner behavior across a controlled series | First-layer quality and extrusion consistency affect how easy it is to judge |
There is no universally best method. Select the test that represents the target profile’s speeds and accelerations, then judge the complete print rather than one attractive corner.
When adaptive pressure advance is appropriate
Effective pressure advance can vary with volumetric flow and acceleration, so one fixed value may be a compromise across an entire model. OrcaSlicer documents adaptive pressure advance as an advanced or experimental option in related settings. It is not a required remedy for an ordinary blob. Establish a stable fixed value first; consider adaptive behavior only when you understand the firmware and profile support and have a repeatable reason to model that variation.
Fix gaps and pinholes on the top surface
Top-surface holes have two distinct forms. If the defect is confined to the top skin while walls and lower layers look sound, the top shell may not have enough support from the infill beneath it. If lines are thin, missing, or separated across many parts of the print, investigate under-extrusion instead.
Top-only holes: improve shell support
- Increase the number of top-shell layers and print a comparison.
- Increase sparse-infill support beneath the top skin if the slicer’s current pattern leaves large unsupported spans.
- Inspect the top surface again at the same layer height and speed.
- Only after shell support is adequate, consider whether a flow adjustment is still needed.
These are starting checks, not universal settings. More top layers increase print time and material use, while more infill can increase weight and cost.

Broad thin or missing lines: investigate under-extrusion
- Flow calibration: confirm that the flow ratio was calibrated with the same material and process conditions.
- Partial clog: inspect and clear the nozzle if extrusion is irregular or progressively starves.
- Extruder grip: check drive-gear tension and look for filament dust or a groove cut by slipping.
- Filament diameter: verify the profile’s diameter entry and the actual material specification.
- Maximum volumetric speed: reduce the requested melt rate or recalibrate the limit if the hotend cannot melt material fast enough.
Do not solve broad under-extrusion by adding top layers. That can hide a symptom on one model while leaving every wall and infill line under-filled.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Interpret pressure advance without overcorrecting
Pressure advance is sensitive to the combination of material, nozzle, temperature, speed, acceleration, and extruder arrangement. A test performed at one process profile does not automatically describe another profile. If you substantially change those conditions, rerun or revalidate the test.
- A value that is too low can leave corner bulges, thick starts, or inconsistent line width after acceleration.
- A value that is too high can create thin corners, under-filled starts, or abrupt changes where motion transitions.
- Retraction and pressure advance interact at travel-to-extrusion transitions, which is why OrcaSlicer places retraction after both flow and pressure-advance calibration.
Use the value that gives the best overall walls and corners for the target profile, not the value that makes one isolated feature look perfect.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA one-variable troubleshooting procedure
- Classify the visible defect. Decide whether it is stringing, a seam-aligned mark, a corner bulge, a top-only hole, or broad under-extrusion.
- Restore the baseline. Return to the last known-good profile and remove unrelated experimental changes.
- Check physical causes. Verify filament condition, nozzle state, extruder grip, firmware feature support, and the correct extruder-type test.
- Choose one test. Change only the setting associated with the diagnosed symptom.
- Print under identical conditions. Keep spool, nozzle, layer height, temperature, speeds, accelerations, and cooling unchanged unless that is the variable being tested.
- Inspect the whole test. Record improvements and new defects, including weak starts, corner thinning, or rough top skins.
- Save or revert. If the result is better, save it in the correct profile. If it is worse, revert and test the next likely cause.
Quick decision path
| Symptom | Order of action |
|---|---|
| Strings between islands | Check moisture and temperature; run retraction calibration for direct drive or Bowden; select the least retraction that clears strings without start gaps. |
| Dots repeating on one wall line | Move the seam; inspect seam gap and wipe behavior; then reassess whether the mark follows the seam. |
| Corner bulges or marks after speed changes | Run pressure-advance calibration with the matching firmware, extruder type, material, and process speeds. |
| Holes only in the top skin | Add top-shell support and improve infill beneath it before changing flow. |
| Thin or missing extrusion throughout | Check flow, clogging, drive-gear grip, filament diameter, and maximum volumetric speed. |
Common mistakes that make calibration harder
- Copying another printer’s number: Retraction and pressure advance are not portable constants.
- Increasing retraction forever: Persistent strings can come from moisture or temperature, and excessive retraction can create start gaps.
- Changing several settings together: A better print is not actionable if you cannot identify the cause.
- Ignoring the extruder arrangement: Direct drive and Bowden systems need different retraction and pressure-advance tests.
- Using a test that does not represent the target profile: Pressure behavior depends on the speeds and accelerations represented by the print.
- Confusing top-surface support with global under-extrusion: Shell and infill changes cannot repair a clogged nozzle or a hotend pushed beyond its melt capacity.
- Leaving calibration mode active: Create a new project after the calibration sequence so normal profile behavior is restored.
What a successful repair looks like
A successful adjustment removes the diagnosed defect without introducing a different one. Strings should decrease while travel-to-line starts remain filled. Seam marks should become less conspicuous or move predictably when seam controls change. Pressure-advance tuning should improve corners and transitions without thinning them. Top surfaces should close when shell support is adequate, while walls and infill remain consistently filled. Record the final values with the material and printer profile so the result can be reproduced rather than rediscovered.
