A stretched Nintendo DS image and a badly arranged pair of screens require different fixes. For distorted proportions, turn on aspect-ratio protection; for cramped screens, change the layout; for sideways or upside-down content, change rotation. In DeSmuME for Windows, these controls are under View. In melonDS and its Libretro core, look for separate layout, rotation and renderer-aspect-ratio options.
Identify the symptom before changing a setting
“The screen looks wrong” can describe three unrelated problems. Resizing a window changes its scale, but it does not necessarily preserve the shape of the Nintendo DS image. A two-screen layout can be perfectly proportional yet waste space or place the screens in an inconvenient order. Rotation changes the direction of the image, not its width-to-height relationship.

Make one change at a time and check the result before changing another category. This prevents a rotation or layout change from being mistaken for an aspect-ratio problem.

DeSmuME for Windows: stop the image from stretching
DeSmuME’s Windows manual provides a specific control for this problem: View > Force Maintain Ratio. The manual describes it this way: “This option forces the window to maintain a correct ratio so it looks correct.” Enable it before resizing the emulator window.

Enable ratio protection
- Open the DeSmuME window.
- Open the View menu.
- Select Force Maintain Ratio so the option is enabled.
- Resize the window using View > Window size, or drag a window edge.
- Stop resizing when the image reaches a comfortable size. The window should now preserve the display’s proportions rather than independently stretching its width and height.
If the window still looks wrong, toggle the option off and on once, then resize again. Also check that you are resizing the emulator window rather than applying a separate stretch or scale command in a graphics wrapper, capture program or desktop compositor.
Choose a fixed window size
DeSmuME’s Windows window-size menu lists 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x and 4x. These are scale presets, not aspect-ratio corrections. A larger preset makes the image easier to see, but selecting 3x instead of 2x will not repair a window that is already being stretched. Keep Force Maintain Ratio enabled, then select the preset that fits your monitor and viewing distance.
- 1x: the smallest listed preset; useful when you need the whole emulator window visible beside another application.
- 1.5x: an intermediate step when 1x is too small and 2x is too large.
- 2x: a general-purpose enlargement for a moderate desktop window.
- 3x or 4x: larger views when your desktop has room for them.
Dragging an edge gives you a custom size, while the menu presets give you repeatable sizes. If a custom drag produces distortion, return to a preset or drag again with ratio protection turned on.

A vertically stacked pair of DS screens follows the physical arrangement of the original handheld, but it can leave large unused areas on a wide desktop monitor. This is a layout issue, not evidence that the image is stretched.
Use a horizontal layout
- Open View.
- Choose LCDs Layout.
- Select Horizontal.
The two displays will sit side by side. Each screen can remain proportional while the combined layout makes better use of a wide monitor. If the pair still appears distorted, return to View > Force Maintain Ratio; horizontal placement and ratio preservation are separate controls.
Show one DS screen
Some games, menus or tasks need only one display. DeSmuME’s Windows menu can hide the other one:

- Open View > LCDs Layout.
- Select One LCD.
- Choose Top First or Bottom First, depending on which display you need.
Use Top First when the upper DS display contains the information you want, and Bottom First when the lower display is the useful one. This mode changes which screen is shown; it does not rotate or independently stretch that screen.
Correct a sideways or upside-down image
For orientation problems, open View > Rotation and select 0, 90, 180 or 270 degrees. Use 0 degrees for the normal direction, 90 or 270 degrees for a sideways presentation, and 180 degrees when the image is inverted. Rotation is not a replacement for Force Maintain Ratio: after choosing an orientation, verify the ratio setting separately if the image still looks wider or taller than it should.
DeSmuME menu differences outside Windows
The Windows paths above are documented for the Windows build. DeSmuME ports do not necessarily expose identical menu names or positions; the FAQ documents different names for Mac. Do not treat a missing Windows menu item as proof that the feature is unavailable, and do not apply a Windows path blindly to another port.
On another desktop platform, identify the controls that correspond to these functions:
- Aspect-ratio protection: a setting named maintain ratio, keep proportions, correct ratio or similar.
- Window scaling: fixed size presets or a resizable window.
- LCD layout: stacked, horizontal or one-screen choices.
- Screen selection: top or bottom display when only one LCD is shown.
- Rotation: 0-, 90-, 180- and 270-degree orientation choices.
Use the equivalent control in the installed port rather than assuming that a menu path copied from Windows will match exactly.

melonDS treats screen placement and orientation as distinct display choices. Its FAQ describes Natural as the arrangement stacked like a real Nintendo DS, while other choices place the screens horizontally or vertically. A layout can therefore solve a cramped-monitor problem without changing the direction of the game image.

Choose a layout for the monitor
- Open melonDS’s display or screen-layout controls.
- Start with Natural if you want the physical DS arrangement.
- Choose a horizontal option when a wide monitor makes a side-by-side pair more practical.
- Choose a vertical option when you want a column but not necessarily the exact Natural arrangement.
- After changing layout, check the emulator’s scaling or aspect-ratio control and correct any new distortion there.
The exact labels can vary by melonDS version and port. The important distinction is that a layout choice controls where the screens are placed, while a rotation choice controls which way their content faces.
Use rotation only for an orientation problem
If the game image is sideways, select a rotation or rotated-layout option rather than widening the window. If the image is upright but the two screens are too narrow, leave rotation unchanged and select a horizontal layout. Mixing those fixes can produce a display that is technically the right size but difficult to read.
Libretro melonDS DS core: account for the frontend and renderer
The Libretro melonDS DS core exposes screen layouts through core options. Its documentation notes that the core-provided output aspect ratio depends on both the selected screen layout and the renderer. Consequently, a ratio change after switching layouts can be expected rather than a sign that the game has been damaged.
Configure and cycle through layouts
- Open the core’s options while the melonDS DS core is running.
- Find the screen-layout option and enable or configure the layouts you want to use.
- Return to the game view.
- Use the frontend’s Next Screen Layout control to cycle through the configured choices.
- When the layout changes, check the resulting output ratio and the frontend’s own video scaling settings.
The available choices can include natural, horizontal, vertical and layouts with sideways rotation. Select a layout that matches the physical arrangement you want, then use the frontend’s aspect-ratio or scaling controls if the final output does not fit your display.
Why a layout switch can change the proportions
A single DS screen, a stacked pair and a side-by-side pair have different combined shapes. The core therefore reports an output ratio appropriate to the chosen arrangement and renderer. If the frontend overrides that ratio with a forced widescreen value, the result can look stretched even though the core layout itself is correct. Remove the override or select a proportional scaling mode in the frontend, then test the layout again.
Because Libretro frontends use their own video menus and hotkeys, the name and location of the scaling control can differ from one frontend to another. Keep the core layout and the frontend’s output-scaling choice conceptually separate when troubleshooting.

A systematic fix when the first change does not work
Use this order so each variable is isolated:
- Record the symptom. Decide whether the problem is shape, placement, screen selection or orientation.
- Identify the emulator and platform. Write down whether you are using DeSmuME for Windows, another DeSmuME port, melonDS, or the Libretro melonDS DS core.
- Reset placement. Return to a known layout such as Natural or the default stacked arrangement. This establishes whether the issue follows a layout change.
- Restore proportional scaling. In DeSmuME for Windows, enable View > Force Maintain Ratio. In other builds, find the equivalent maintain-ratio or proportional-scaling control.
- Select a known size. Use a DeSmuME preset such as 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x or 4x instead of an arbitrary drag, then resize only if needed.
- Change the layout. Try horizontal for a wide display, one-screen mode when you need only one LCD, or the corresponding melonDS layout.
- Correct orientation last. Apply rotation only after the size and placement are correct.
- Check the outer video layer. In a Libretro setup, inspect core options, renderer selection and frontend video scaling because all three can affect the displayed ratio.
If the image is still wrong after these steps, undo the last change and test the previous configuration. A return to normal after undoing one setting identifies the category that needs adjustment.
Common mistakes and their remedies
Using a larger size to cure distortion
Window-size presets change how large the emulator appears. They do not force the width and height to remain proportional. Turn on ratio protection first, then select a size.
Choosing horizontal layout when the real problem is stretching
Horizontal placement changes the relationship between the two LCDs, not the proportions of each LCD. If individual elements still look wide or tall, inspect maintain-ratio or frontend scaling settings.
Rotating a screen that is merely misplaced
A sideways image needs rotation; a correctly oriented image in an inconvenient position needs a layout change. In melonDS, Natural, horizontal and vertical arrangements are layout choices, while rotated layouts are orientation choices.
Assuming every emulator has DeSmuME’s menu path
Menu paths vary by emulator, port and frontend. The documented Windows route is not a universal shortcut. Find the installed program’s display, layout, scaling, rotation or aspect-ratio controls and map the desired correction to that control.
Forcing a widescreen ratio in a Libretro frontend
The Libretro melonDS DS core’s output ratio changes with layout and renderer. A frontend override can stretch a valid core output. Test the core’s own layout first, then remove or change the override rather than forcing every layout into the same shape.

Practical configurations

These are starting configurations, not promises that every port exposes identical choices. Save or note the working combination so you can restore it after changing games, renderers or frontends.
When the installed emulator does not match these instructions
First identify the exact emulator name, platform and build. Then open its display-related menus and search for the function rather than an exact phrase. “Maintain ratio,” “keep aspect,” “proportional,” “LCD layout,” “screen layout,” “rotation,” “scale” and “renderer” are the useful categories.
Do not assume a current Android or other mobile port has the same controls as DeSmuME for Windows. In particular, a specific current DraStic menu path is not established here, so use that application’s own display documentation or inspect its settings instead of applying the Windows instructions. The same caution applies to frontends that wrap melonDS: the core may expose one label while the frontend assigns another menu item or hotkey.

What a correct result looks like
- Circles, fonts and character sprites retain their natural shape when the emulator window is resized.
- The two LCDs occupy a deliberate arrangement—stacked, horizontal or another selected layout—rather than being forced into the monitor’s shape.
- A one-screen view clearly shows either the top or bottom LCD, without an unused second screen consuming space.
- Text and controls are upright unless you intentionally selected a rotated layout.
- Changing a size preset makes the image larger or smaller without independently changing its width and height.
- In a Libretro setup, the frontend’s output matches the core’s selected layout instead of overriding it with an unrelated fixed ratio.
If all of these checks pass, the display issue has been separated into the correct category and corrected without requiring a monitor, stylus or other hardware change.
