A seam or soft-looking patch in 360-degree footage can come from close-range parallax, an incorrect stitching setting, an obstruction, a poorly fitted lens guard, or a camera that needs model-specific calibration. First check whether the defect appears only in preview or also in an exported file; then work through the settings and capture checks before assuming the camera needs repair.
What causes a seam or soft spot in 360-degree video?
A 360 camera combines views from multiple lenses into one panorama. Because the lenses sit in different positions, a nearby subject appears from a slightly different angle to each lens. This parallax can make edges look distorted or soft, or create ghosting where the views meet. Software can improve the join, but it cannot always make a close subject line up perfectly. Insta360’s X Series stitching guidance describes this issue for foreground and mid-ground subjects.
Not every seam-like artifact is parallax. A finger, strap, mount, cover, or lens guard can obstruct the lens area; a guard that is not seated correctly can introduce shadows or edges. Incorrect lens or guard settings can also produce stitching artifacts. Treat “soft spot” as a visual symptom to investigate, not as the name of one specific camera fault.
Diagnose where the defect appears
Before changing anything, note the camera model, the app or editor used, and whether the flaw is visible in the camera preview, in the maker’s app, or only after export. Also note whether a person or object was close to a lens or crossed the seam. These details help distinguish a capture issue from an export or accessory problem.

Preview and export may not look identical. Insta360 says preview stitching can be less capable than the exported processing; for its X Series cameras, the company recommends using its app or Studio for best results and identifies AI Stitching and Optical Flow Stitching as options in relevant cases. Check the tools and options supported by your own camera model.

Match the stitching setting to your actual setup
In the camera maker’s app or desktop software, check the lens or stitching options. If a lens guard is installed, choose the corresponding guard setting where the software provides one. If no guard is installed, do not leave a guard mode selected. The exact menu names vary by camera and software version; follow the manual for your model.

Check for obstruction and poor accessory fit
Inspect the areas around both lenses for fingers, straps, mounts, covers, or anything else entering the camera’s view. Make sure a lens guard or cover is fully and correctly seated. If a guard may be causing the artifact, remove it and record a comparison clip when it is safe and appropriate to do so. Replace a guard or lens only if the part is damaged, changed, or incompatible, and verify compatibility with the exact camera model.

Reduce close-range parallax
Move people and important objects farther from the camera when possible, and avoid placing a face or other critical detail directly across the stitch line. Distances are model- and situation-specific: Insta360’s X3 FAQ gives 0.6 m (1.9 ft) as a model-specific minimum safety stitching distance. Its X Series troubleshooting guide recommends at least 0.8 m (2.62 ft) for better results in the bottom or hand area. These figures describe different contexts and are not universal minimum distances for every 360 camera.

An invisible selfie stick can reduce the camera body or hand appearing in the bottom area, but it does not eliminate close-range parallax or correct a displaced lens. Use one only if it addresses an obstruction in your shot.

Compare a proper export with the preview
Export a short clip through the camera maker’s app or desktop stitcher, and compare it with the in-camera preview. For supported Insta360 X Series footage, try the available AI Stitching or Optical Flow Stitching options when appropriate. If you plan to upload a 360-degree video to YouTube, YouTube’s upload guidance says to stitch it first using the camera-supplied or separate 180/360 stitching software.

Use calibration only on a supported model
Insta360 documents stitching calibration for the X4 Air, X5, and X6 to address stitching affected by a drop or lens replacement. Its calibration tutorial instructs users to remove accessories, work outdoors in a bright, open area with large objects about 10 m (33 ft) away, and hold the camera still with one lens facing up and the other down. Follow the tutorial and the camera’s current instructions for the supported model. Do not assume the same steps or feature apply to other cameras; use their model-specific manuals.

Re-test before seeking service
Record and export a short test clip after each relevant change so you can identify what helped. If the defect persists across the settings and a properly prepared export—or began after an impact or lens replacement—save a sample clip and note the camera model and setup when contacting the manufacturer’s support. A persistent fault may need model-specific assessment; these troubleshooting steps do not guarantee a repair.

Special case: underwater footage
Underwater footage can have an additional optical cause. DJI notes that water refraction through the convex fisheye lens design of the Osmo 360 may cause distortion and stitching errors. If the problem occurs only underwater, consult the Osmo 360 FAQ and avoid treating it automatically as the same issue as a surface-level obstruction or calibration problem.
