If your character or camera moves while you leave a PS5 DualSense stick untouched, start with Sony’s reset procedure, then install any available controller software update. Those steps are safe and quick. If the drift remains across games, the joystick module is probably worn; replacing it requires opening the controller and performing difficult desoldering and soldering work. If you do not already have electronics-repair experience, use PlayStation Repairs or a qualified repair technician instead.
What PS5 stick drift looks like
Stick drift is unintended analog-stick input. A character may walk, a camera may pan, a menu selection may move, or an aiming reticle may slide even though your thumb is not touching the stick. The symptom can affect the left stick, the right stick, or both.
Do not assume every unwanted movement is a defective controller. A game can have an aggressive or adjustable dead-zone setting, and a control option can make small stick readings more noticeable. A useful first check is to test the same controller in more than one game and, where available, in the PS5 home screen or another control menu. If the movement appears only in one game, inspect that game’s controller and dead-zone settings before opening the DualSense. There is no universal setting that Sony documents as a guaranteed fix for drift on a standard DualSense.

1. Reset the DualSense
Sony’s controller-support instructions make a physical reset the first troubleshooting step. A reset does not reconfigure the controller or erase its pairing settings.

- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Find the small reset button on the back of the DualSense, near the Sony logo.
- Use a pin or another similar narrow tool to press the button.
- Hold it briefly, then release it.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with a USB cable.
- Press the PS button and wait for the controller to reconnect.
Use a cable that supports data as well as charging; a charge-only cable may not establish the connection needed for pairing. After the controller reconnects, test the game in which you noticed the movement and then check another game. A reset can clear a temporary communication or state problem, but it cannot restore a physically worn joystick track.
2. Check for DualSense software updates
Sony distributes DualSense controller software updates with PS5 system-software updates. You can also check the controller status manually:
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Open Controller (General).
- Select DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- Install an update if the PS5 offers one, and keep the controller connected as instructed on screen.
Restart the console after the update and test the controller again. Updating is worthwhile because it rules out an available software fix, but it should not be presented as a cure for a joystick module that has physically worn.

Decide whether the problem is software or hardware
After the reset and update, use a simple decision test:
- Only one game is affected: review that game’s dead-zone, sensitivity, and controller settings. The game may be interpreting a small input differently from other software.
- Several games are affected and the PS5 menus also move: the controller itself is the stronger suspect.
- The problem disappears after the reset: continue using the controller, but watch for recurrence. A returning symptom points toward an underlying hardware issue.
- The problem persists after the reset and update: treat a worn joystick module as the likely cause and choose between professional service and an advanced repair.
Do not spray liquid into the stick, pry the stick cap off, or open the controller merely to try an unverified cleaning trick. The available documentation does not establish that external cleaning or calibration reliably fixes drift on a standard DualSense.

Why persistent drift usually means a worn module
The analog stick is part of a joystick module that reports position to the controller electronics. Repeated use can wear the sensing surfaces or introduce enough variation that the module reports movement at rest. A reset changes the controller’s state; an update changes software. Neither replaces worn mechanical or electrical components.
For a standard DualSense, iFixit’s joystick-replacement guide describes the documented hardware remedy: remove the original module and install a replacement. The job is not a plug-in repair. It involves opening the controller, reaching the circuit board, desoldering the old module, soldering the replacement, and reassembling and testing the controller. iFixit classifies the work as difficult and calls for intermediate soldering ability.
Identify your DualSense revision before buying a part
DualSense internals and repair procedures vary between revisions. A joystick module that fits one revision may not be the right part for another. iFixit’s DualSense V1 repair information says the second digit of the controller’s serial number is used as the version indicator. Record that digit and compare it with the revision information in the repair guide before ordering anything.
Verify all of the following before opening the controller:
- The controller is a standard DualSense, not a DualSense Edge.
- The replacement listing explicitly matches your controller revision.
- The guide you are following covers that revision.
- The module’s physical and electrical specification matches the original part.
- You have the soldering and desoldering equipment needed for the job.
Do not buy a part solely because it is advertised as a PS5 joystick. The model name alone does not establish revision compatibility.

How the standard DualSense module repair works
The exact disassembly order depends on the revision, so use a revision-matched service guide rather than treating a generic video as authoritative. The overall repair has these stages:
Prepare a safe work area
- Turn off the PS5 and disconnect the controller.
- Work on a clean, stable, well-lit surface where screws and small parts cannot roll away.
- Use the replacement module and the soldering and desoldering tools specified by the guide.
- Keep track of screw locations and cable orientation while disassembling.
- Accept that opening the controller can create additional damage if a cable, pad, board, or housing is mishandled.
Open the controller and expose the board
Follow the guide for your revision to remove the outer shell and reach the board carrying the joystick module. Do not force a shell seam or pull a ribbon cable by its wires. If the interior does not match the photographs or diagrams in your guide, stop and confirm the revision before continuing.
Desolder the original module
The module is attached to the board through soldered connections. Removing it requires heating and clearing those joints without lifting a board pad or damaging nearby components. This is the point at which the repair becomes substantially more difficult than replacing a removable accessory. If you cannot confidently control soldering heat, remove solder cleanly, and inspect joints, use a professional repairer.
Install and solder the replacement
Seat the compatible replacement module in the board, solder every required connection, and inspect the joints for bridges, incomplete wetting, or mechanical movement. A standard replacement joystick module is the conventional part described for this repair. iFixit also lists a Gulikit TMR alternative; whichever part you choose, compatibility with your specific revision must be confirmed before purchase.
Reassemble and test before final closure
Reconnect every cable in the correct orientation, reinstall the shell, and test both sticks, buttons, triggers, wireless connection, and USB operation. Test in more than one game so that a game-specific dead-zone behavior is not mistaken for a successful or failed repair. If the controller behaves worse after reassembly, stop using it and have the work inspected rather than repeatedly reopening it.

Do not apply DualSense Edge instructions to a standard DualSense
Sony publishes removable stick-module instructions for the DualSense Edge. The Edge is designed for that module-swapping procedure. A standard DualSense does not use the same user-removable module arrangement, so Edge instructions must not be presented as a standard DualSense fix.
For the standard model, persistent drift normally means the soldered joystick module must be replaced or the controller must be serviced. Confirm the model printed on the controller and the guide’s model name before following any removal procedure.
When professional repair is the better choice
Choose PlayStation Repairs or a qualified electronics-repair service if you lack intermediate soldering experience, do not have suitable desoldering equipment, or cannot identify the controller revision with confidence. Professional service is also sensible when the controller is valuable, when more than one input is failing, or when a previous opening attempt has damaged the shell or board.
Contact the service before shipping the controller and ask what model and revision information it requires. Back up any relevant console data, remove accessories, and follow the service’s instructions for packaging and account or proof-of-purchase details. Availability, warranty coverage, turnaround time, and regional eligibility are handled by the service and are not universal.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a dead-zone setting repairs the controller
A larger dead zone can hide small unwanted inputs in a particular game, but it does not repair the module. It can also reduce aiming precision. Treat such a setting as a game-specific control choice, not a universal hardware solution.

Skipping the reset and update
Opening a controller before trying Sony’s reset and software-update checks adds risk without first ruling out the simplest causes. Perform those steps in order and record whether the symptom changes.
Buying a module without checking the revision
Revision differences are a documented concern. Use the second serial-number digit described by iFixit, match the guide, and verify the part listing before ordering.
Using Edge replacement instructions on the wrong model
The removable-module procedure is for DualSense Edge. Applying it to a standard DualSense can lead to incorrect disassembly or a wasted part.
Treating soldering as a quick plug-in job
The standard repair requires desoldering and soldering on the controller board. If that description does not match your experience or equipment, stop at the professional-service option.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Test the controller in another game and check whether the PS5 interface also moves without stick input.
- Inspect the affected game’s dead-zone and sensitivity settings if the symptom is limited to that game.
- Turn off the PS5 and perform Sony’s rear-button reset.
- Reconnect by USB and press the PS button.
- Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software and install any offered update.
- Retest across games.
- If drift persists, identify the controller model and revision before considering parts.
- Choose a qualified repair service unless you already have the intermediate soldering skills, tools, and revision-specific guide required for module replacement.
What a successful fix should look like
After a reset or update, the controller should remain stationary when both sticks are untouched in multiple games and in the PS5 interface. After a hardware repair, all other controls should continue working: buttons, triggers, both sticks, wireless pairing, USB communication, and charging. A controller that stops drifting but develops a new button, trigger, or connection fault is not fully repaired.
The safest path is therefore straightforward: reset first, update second, isolate game settings, and treat persistent cross-game drift as a hardware-service decision. Replace a standard DualSense joystick module only when you can match the revision and perform the required soldering work; otherwise, let PlayStation Repairs or a qualified technician handle it.
