Start by identifying the exact Apex Pro generation and form factor, then use the reset or calibration procedure for that model. Unplug the keyboard, perform the matching reset, reconnect it directly to a compatible USB 3.0 port, and test again. If keys still miss input, check the actuation setting and active profile. For ghost inputs on the Apex Pro TKL 2023, run SteelSeries’ specific OmniPoint calibration; do not apply that key combination to every Apex Pro model. When keys register twice, temporarily turn Rapid Trigger off as a diagnostic check rather than assuming it is the cause.

Identify your exact Apex Pro before changing anything

“Apex Pro” covers several keyboards with different controls and reset instructions. A full-size Apex Pro, an Apex Pro TKL, a Gen 3 model, and a wireless or wired variant can expose different menu names and key combinations. Using the wrong procedure can leave you with an unchanged problem or erase settings you intended to keep.

Find the model name on the keyboard label, its packaging, or in SteelSeries GG. Record the generation, full-size or TKL layout, wired or wireless connection, and operating system. If GG displays a model name that differs from the label, use the exact model shown for firmware and support purposes.

Reset an Apex Pro with the general SteelSeries procedure

Use this procedure when your keyboard is an older or otherwise unconfirmed Apex Pro model and the issue appears software-related. It is not the Gen 3 OLED-menu reset described in the next section.

SteelSeries Apex Pro TKL Gen 3 Gaming Keyboard - Black
  • TRIPLE THREAT POWERED BY QUICKSET — Apex Pro is the only line of keyboards in the world with Rapid Trigger, Rapid Tap, and Protection Mode (Patent Pending), activated for your game in seconds
  • RAPID TRIGGER FOR FASTER ACTIONS — Stop fast, start your next move faster. Resets the moment you release a key.
  • RAPID TAP FOR FASTER MOVEMENT — Snaps to your latest key press to strafe and dodge faster.
  • PROTECTION MODE STOPS MISTAKES — Patent pending feature reduces accidental keypresses on nearby keys - no more accidental ults
  • QUICKSET AUTO-PRESETS — Easy setup in seconds, auto-launch pro-level configs when your game loads.
  1. Save any keyboard configuration you need to recreate. A reset can clear onboard settings.
  2. Disconnect the keyboard’s USB cable. For a model using a separate wireless dongle, disconnect the dongle as well.
  3. Press and hold the keyboard’s OLED/menu button (called the multimedia button on some models) together with the scroll wheel.
  4. While continuing to hold both controls, reconnect the keyboard to the computer.
  5. Keep holding until the keyboard flashes, then release the controls.
  6. Wait for the operating system and SteelSeries GG to recognize the keyboard. Reapply only the profile and actuation settings you actually need, then test the previously affected keys.

The flashing response is the observable indication that the reset sequence was accepted. If nothing flashes, disconnect the keyboard and repeat the sequence once, making sure both controls remain held during reconnection. Do not substitute a different button combination simply because your keyboard has a similar-looking key.

Use the separate factory reset on Apex Pro Gen 3

Gen 3 models use an OLED menu path instead of the older hold-while-reconnecting sequence. SteelSeries’ Gen 3 reset guide specifies the following navigation:

  1. Press and hold the media button to open the OLED control.
  2. Navigate to About.
  3. Select Factory Reset.
  4. Confirm the reset when prompted.

After the keyboard restarts, check whether the affected keys respond before importing an old configuration. If the problem returns only after a profile or setting is restored, keep the keyboard at a known-good profile and add changes one at a time. If your OLED menu does not contain About or Factory Reset, stop and identify the model again rather than forcing the Gen 3 procedure onto another generation.

Check the connection before blaming a switch

A keyboard that loses many inputs can be suffering from its connection path rather than an individual OmniPoint key. SteelSeries’ general software troubleshooting guidance recommends a direct connection to a compatible USB 3.0 port and trying other ports if the first one fails.

  1. Disconnect hubs, monitor passthrough ports, and extension adapters for the test.
  2. Connect the keyboard directly to a USB 3.0 port on the computer.
  3. If the behavior remains, shut down the keyboard connection, move it to another compatible USB port, and test again.
  4. For wireless models, test with the receiver connected directly rather than through a hub, and also test the wired connection if your model supports it.
  5. Observe whether the failure affects every key, a group of keys, or only one key. Record the result instead of changing several settings at once.

A successful port change does not establish that the original port was defective; it shows that the original connection path was involved. Keep that detail for Support if the fault returns.

Fix keys that seem not to respond

Verify the active profile

Apex Pro keyboards can store different profiles. A profile can make a key appear inactive through remapping or other configuration even though the keyboard is receiving the press. In GG, select the profile currently assigned to the keyboard and compare it with a known-good profile. Test in a simple text field as well as in the application where you first noticed the problem.

Do not conclude that a particular actuation value caused the failure solely because changing it appears to help. SteelSeries documents the range and adjustment method, but the available instructions do not assign a specific value as the cause of a nonresponsive key.

Check the actuation level

On Apex Pro and Apex Pro TKL models covered by the user manual, actuation is adjustable from 1 to 10 through the OLED controls. A lower number represents an earlier trigger point and a higher number requires more travel. The exact menu wording can vary by generation, so use the OLED menu shown for your keyboard.

  1. Open the OLED control and select the actuation setting.
  2. Note the current value for the affected profile.
  3. Choose a moderate value for testing rather than repeatedly moving between extremes.
  4. Press the affected key several times in a text editor and in the application where the issue occurs.
  5. If the result changes, document both values and the profile name before contacting Support.

This is a diagnostic comparison, not a claim that one number is correct for every user. Keep the setting that reliably registers your intended presses and does not create unwanted activation.

Separate a keyboard problem from an application problem

Test in a plain text field, a browser address field, or another simple input area. If the key works there but not in one game or application, inspect that program’s key bindings, input mode, and profile selection. If the same physical key fails in multiple applications, continue with the keyboard reset and connection checks instead of reinstalling unrelated software.

Calibrate ghost inputs on the Apex Pro TKL 2023

Ghost input means the keyboard reports presses that you did not intentionally make, or reports unexpected keys while you press another key. SteelSeries provides a dedicated OmniPoint calibration procedure for the Apex Pro TKL 2023. The model limitation matters: this sequence is not a universal Apex Pro reset.

Before starting, install the latest SteelSeries GG available for your system, remove the keyboard’s magnetic wrist rest, and save any settings you want to recreate. If your TKL 2023 is wireless, include its dongle in the disconnect step.

  1. Unplug the keyboard. Disconnect the wireless dongle as well when applicable.
  2. Remove the magnetic wrist rest so it cannot interfere with the calibration setup.
  3. Hold SteelSeries + I + O on the keyboard.
  4. While holding those keys, reconnect the keyboard.
  5. Follow the on-screen or keyboard prompts and fully press every OmniPoint key as requested. Do not skip keys or make partial presses.
  6. Continue until the keyboard indicates that calibration is complete.
  7. Save the calibration by pressing SteelSeries + I + O again when instructed.
  8. Reconnect normally and test the keys that produced ghost inputs.

Calibration changes the keyboard’s learned actuation behavior; it is not a substitute for identifying a damaged cable, a failing connection, or a fault that follows the keyboard between computers. If your keyboard is not the Apex Pro TKL 2023, do not run this procedure merely because the symptoms sound similar.

Diagnose double typing and repeated registration

Double registration can mean one physical press produces two characters, two game actions, or two menu movements. First establish whether the repetition occurs in more than one application and on more than one computer. Then test the keyboard’s Rapid Trigger state.

Turn Rapid Trigger off for a controlled test

SteelSeries documents a Rapid Trigger toggle for Apex PRO keyboards: press SteelSeries key + T. Model-specific OLED controls and status indicators show whether the feature is enabled. Toggle it off, press the same key repeatedly at a steady pace, and compare the result with Rapid Trigger enabled.

  • Hybrid blue mechanical gaming switches – The tactile click of a blue mechanical switch plus a smooth membrane – guaranteed for 20 million keypresses
  • OLED smart display – Customize with gifs, game info, discord messages, and more.
  • Aircraft-grade aluminum alloy frame – Manufactured for unbreakable durability and sturdiness
  • Dynamic per-key RGB illumination – Gorgeous color schemes and reactive effects for every key
  • Premium magnetic wrist rest – Provides full palm support and comfort

If double registration stops when Rapid Trigger is off, record that observation and your model, firmware, GG version, and profile. It is useful diagnostic evidence, but it does not prove Rapid Trigger is the underlying cause; the documented toggle is a test control, not a failure explanation.

Check for a profile-specific repeat

Repeat the same test on a default or otherwise known-good profile. A duplicate result confined to one profile points toward configuration or actuation settings. A duplicate result on every profile and in multiple applications points toward the keyboard or its connection path.

Do not add unsupported hardware fixes

The available SteelSeries instructions do not establish a particular switch, keycap, cleaning product, or repair tool as a remedy for repeated registration. Avoid disassembling the keyboard while it is under support or warranty review. Capture a short, repeatable description of the key, profile, Rapid Trigger state, and applications affected instead.

Use a controlled test sequence

Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell what helped. Use this order and write down the result after each stage:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the model, generation, layout, and connection type.
  2. Reproduce the symptom in a simple text field and note the exact keys involved.
  3. Connect directly to a compatible USB 3.0 port and try another port if necessary.
  4. Perform the reset that matches the model: general button reset for the applicable older/general models, or OLED-menu factory reset for Gen 3.
  5. Check the active profile and record the actuation value from 1 to 10 where supported.
  6. For Apex Pro TKL 2023 ghost inputs, perform the dedicated OmniPoint calibration, including the wrist-rest removal and every-key press sequence.
  7. For repeated registration, test with Rapid Trigger disabled and then, if needed, enabled again.
  8. Test on another computer when available. Note whether the same physical keys fail or repeat there.

This sequence distinguishes a configuration change from a connection-dependent problem and gives Support usable evidence without claiming a cause that has not been demonstrated.

When to contact SteelSeries Support

Contact SteelSeries Support when the model-matched reset, direct-port tests, and any applicable calibration do not restore normal input. Include:

  • The exact product name, generation, full-size or TKL form factor, and wired or wireless version.
  • The keyboard’s firmware version and the SteelSeries GG version.
  • The operating system and whether the behavior appears in more than one application.
  • The specific affected keys and whether they miss presses, create ghost inputs, or register twice.
  • The active profile, actuation value, and Rapid Trigger state during testing.
  • Which reset or calibration procedure you used and what happened afterward.
  • Whether the symptom follows the keyboard when connected to another computer.

Describe the result in observable terms: for example, “the letter appears twice after one press in a plain text field,” rather than “the switch is defective.” Support can then determine whether additional firmware steps, service, or replacement is appropriate.

Choosing a replacement only after troubleshooting

A replacement is a last resort, not a universal fix for missed or repeated input. If Support determines that replacement is appropriate, match the exact generation, physical layout, full-size versus TKL form factor, and wired or wireless version. Confirm that the desired OLED, OmniPoint, actuation, and Rapid Trigger features belong to that model family.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume a similarly named Apex Pro will have identical menus, reset controls, or calibration behavior. Current stock, prices, and product condition are not established by the support instructions, so verify those details at the time of purchase. A replacement keyboard also does not recover unsaved profiles; export or record settings whenever the software allows it.
