Before changing drivers, cables, or microphone settings, check the product name. SteelSeries identifies Aeon Pro as a gaming controller, not a headset. Its controller can connect to a PC, Xbox, or mobile device by USB-C or Bluetooth, but that information does not identify how an unnamed headset connects or how its microphone should be reset.

Use the workflow below to identify the actual hardware, separate Bluetooth limitations from faults, and determine whether the problem is in Windows, an app, a port, or the headset itself. If the label on your headset has a different model name, use that model’s manual for pairing, firmware, reset, and replacement-part instructions.

1. Confirm what “Aeon Pro” refers to

Look at the physical label, underside, box, or the name shown in your operating system. If it says Aeon Pro, you may have the SteelSeries controller rather than a headset. The controller is documented for PC, Xbox, and mobile use and can operate without its base station by connecting directly to a PC with a USB-C-to-USB-A cable or by Bluetooth.

A controller’s USB and Bluetooth behavior cannot be used to infer the pairing sequence, microphone wiring, firmware process, or cable compatibility of a separate headset. Do not buy a replacement microphone or cable until you know the exact headset family and connector type.

What to record before troubleshooting

  • The exact model name printed on the headset and, if relevant, the controller.
  • The platform: Windows PC, Xbox, phone, tablet, or another device.
  • The connection path: Bluetooth, USB, 3.5 mm analog, or a headset/controller port.
  • The symptom: no connection, no playback, distorted or quiet playback, a microphone that is missing, or a microphone that works only in some apps.
  • Whether the failure occurs in every application or only one game, call app, browser, or recording program.

This information determines which checks are meaningful. A Bluetooth profile problem requires a different remedy from a loose analog plug, and an app permission problem is not repaired by resetting the headset.

2. Identify the failing part of the audio path

Test one direction at a time. First ask whether the device is connected, then whether Windows can send sound to it, and finally whether Windows can receive microphone input. Keep the suspected headset connected in only one way during each test so that Windows does not silently switch to a different output.

Connection failure

If the device does not appear at all, start with the physical or wireless link. For Bluetooth, confirm that Bluetooth is enabled and that the device is shown as connected rather than merely remembered. For USB, disconnect other audio interfaces temporarily and try a different USB port. For analog, push the plug fully into the correct jack and check whether the computer has separate headphone and microphone sockets.

Playback failure

If the device is connected but silent, select it explicitly as the output device instead of relying on the default. Play a system sound or a local audio file before testing a particular game. This distinguishes a Windows routing problem from an application that has its own output selector.

Microphone failure

If playback works but the microphone is absent or silent, select the intended input device and check Windows microphone access. Then test in a basic recorder or the operating system’s input meter. If the meter moves but a game or call app hears nothing, the remaining fault is usually that application’s selected input, mute state, or permission.

Quality or latency failure

Note whether the problem starts exactly when the microphone is activated. On Windows Bluetooth, that timing is significant: the system can change from the high-quality, one-way A2DP profile to the two-way HFP profile. HFP permits microphone and playback at the same time but reduces playback quality. This is a Bluetooth behavior, not proof that the headset speaker is damaged.

3. Bluetooth connection and pairing checks

  1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and make sure Bluetooth is turned on.
  2. Find the actual headset name in the device list. If it is listed as paired but not connected, select it and choose Connect.
  3. If connection attempts fail, select the device’s More options menu, choose Remove device, then put the headset into its documented pairing mode and add it again with Add device > Bluetooth.
  4. Turn off Bluetooth on nearby phones, tablets, consoles, or other computers while pairing. A headset that reconnects to another remembered device can appear unavailable on Windows.
  5. After pairing, open Settings > System > Sound and choose the headset separately under Output and Input if both entries are available.

If the headset never appears, test Bluetooth with another known-working accessory. If other accessories also fail, troubleshoot the computer’s Bluetooth adapter or driver rather than the headset. If only the headset fails on several platforms, its model-specific pairing or reset instructions are required.

4. Why Bluetooth audio quality drops when the mic turns on

Windows Bluetooth commonly exposes two relevant profiles. A2DP is designed for one-way playback at higher quality. HFP supports two-way audio, so the microphone can operate while you listen, but playback quality is reduced. When a game, meeting app, or recording program opens the microphone, Windows may switch to HFP automatically.

Typical signs include music becoming narrow or muffled, a lower sample-quality impression, or increased delay immediately after the microphone is selected. Closing the application that uses the microphone may return playback to A2DP, which confirms the profile change rather than a speaker failure.

Choose the connection that fits the job

Connection Microphone and playback together Playback while mic is active Latency Compatibility and diagnosis
Bluetooth Usually possible through HFP, if the headset supports it Can be reduced when Windows changes from A2DP to HFP Generally higher and more variable than a wired path Convenient, but depends on Bluetooth support, pairing, profiles, and platform behavior
USB Usually supported when the headset presents separate playback and input devices Not subject to the Bluetooth A2DP/HFP switch Typically preferable to Bluetooth for latency-sensitive use, subject to the device and driver Useful for isolating a wireless problem; try another USB port if it is not detected
Analog Depends on the headset plug, jack wiring, and whether the computer provides a microphone input Audio quality is not changed by Bluetooth profiles Usually low, with no wireless transport delay Requires the correct jack or adapter; a loose or incompatible plug can affect one channel or the mic

When the Bluetooth mic profile produces unacceptable sound or delay, SteelSeries recommends USB or analog connection where available. If you must stay wireless, use the Bluetooth profile that your operating system and headset expose, and understand that high-quality stereo playback and a Bluetooth microphone may not be available simultaneously.

5. Fix a microphone that is missing or silent in Windows

  1. Connect or pair the headset first. A microphone cannot be selected until Windows detects the device.
  2. Open Settings > System > Sound. Under Input, select the intended headset microphone rather than a laptop microphone, webcam, controller, or virtual device.
  3. Speak while watching the input level. If the meter does not move, check the headset’s physical mute button, boom position, inline control, and cable connection.
  4. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Microphone. Turn on microphone access for the device and allow desktop applications to access the microphone.
  5. Open the affected application’s audio or voice settings and select the same microphone there. Applications can override the Windows default.
  6. Use the application’s own input test. If Windows shows movement but the application test is silent, inspect that app’s mute, push-to-talk, input-volume, and permission settings.

For a USB headset, disconnect it, wait briefly, and reconnect it to another USB port. Avoid an unpowered hub during diagnosis. For Bluetooth, confirm the headset remains connected after the application opens the microphone; a disconnect or profile change can create a new input entry.

When the microphone works in one app only

A working input meter in Windows establishes that the operating system is receiving signal. Check the affected app’s selected input, account or browser permission, push-to-talk binding, and mute indicator. Test a second app before changing drivers. If every app fails while Windows also shows no input, the cause is more likely a mute control, connection, permission, or hardware issue.

6. Fix no sound, quiet sound, or poor playback

  1. In Settings > System > Sound, choose the intended device under Output.
  2. Raise the Windows output volume and check the application’s separate volume control. Make sure the device is not muted in either place.
  3. Use the operating system’s test control or play a known-good local recording. Do not diagnose from a single game or streaming site.
  4. If the device is USB-connected and silent, try another USB port. If it works there, the original port, hub, or connection may be at fault.
  5. If it is analog, reseat the plug and verify that the plug and adapter match the headset’s wiring. A headset with a combined headset plug may require the correct splitter or combo jack.
  6. If quality drops only when the microphone starts over Bluetooth, treat it as the A2DP-to-HFP change described above. Switch to USB or analog for simultaneous high-quality playback and microphone use when the headset supports those connections.

Do not assume that a controller’s USB-C connection carries the same audio functions as a headset’s USB connection. The operating system must enumerate the specific product as an audio output and, when supported, an audio input.

7. Isolate the fault to the headset, port, platform, or app

Changing one variable at a time prevents a false diagnosis.

  1. Test the headset in a second application on the same computer.
  2. Test a different headset or microphone in the original application.
  3. For USB, test another port and, if possible, another computer.
  4. For Bluetooth, test the headset on another supported device and test another Bluetooth accessory on the computer.
  5. For analog, gently move the plug while playing a steady signal. Crackling or one-channel loss that follows the cable indicates a physical connection problem, but do not bend the connector aggressively.
  6. Compare the result with the headset disconnected. If the application behaves normally without it, recheck its device selection after reconnecting.

Interpret the pattern rather than relying on one test. A problem that follows the headset across platforms points toward the headset, cable, or its model-specific configuration. A problem that stays with one USB port, Bluetooth adapter, operating system, or application points away from the headset.

8. What you can and cannot infer about the SteelSeries Aeon Pro controller

SteelSeries documents the Aeon Pro as a gaming controller for PC, Xbox, and mobile. The controller can be used without its base station by connecting directly to a PC with USB-C-to-USB-A or by Bluetooth. Those facts are useful only if the device in your hands is the controller.

They do not establish that an unspecified headset will pair with the controller, that the controller provides a headset microphone path, or that a controller cable is suitable for a headset. If your problem concerns a headset plugged into a controller or console, identify the headset model and the exact controller or console port first. Then follow the headset manufacturer’s compatibility and wiring instructions.

9. Use model-specific support only after identification

SteelSeries’ general audio support topics include microphones that do not work or are not detected, quiet microphones, simultaneous game and chat audio, and headset compatibility. Those topics can help you choose a troubleshooting branch, but they are not a substitute for the manual for your actual headset family.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once you have the correct model, look up its official instructions for pairing, factory reset, firmware, cable pinout, mute behavior, and supported platforms. Avoid applying a reset combination or firmware process from another model. Replacement microphones and cables are also model-specific; confirm the connector, wiring, and compatibility before purchasing anything.

10. A short decision path

  • The label says Aeon Pro: treat it as the SteelSeries controller and troubleshoot its USB-C or Bluetooth connection; do not call it a headset.
  • The label names another headset: record that model and use the connection-specific checks above, followed by its own manual.
  • Bluetooth quality falls when the mic opens: Windows is likely moving from A2DP to HFP; use USB or analog for better simultaneous playback and latency when supported.
  • Windows sees no microphone: verify pairing or USB detection, select the input, check microphone privacy access, and inspect physical mute controls.
  • Windows sees the mic but one app does not: correct that app’s input, permission, mute, or push-to-talk setting.
  • The fault follows one port or adapter: investigate that computer connection rather than replacing the headset.
  • The fault follows the headset everywhere: obtain the correct model’s reset, firmware, cable, or service guidance before buying parts.
