Most SteamVR demo failures can be isolated by separating three paths: the SteamVR runtime, frame-time performance, and the headset’s video/USB connection. Start by verifying SteamVR’s files, updating the graphics driver, restarting SteamVR and Windows, and rerunning Room Setup. If the problem remains, test SteamVR safe mode to determine whether an overlay, utility, or third-party driver is involved. For stutter, use Frame Timing to identify CPU or rendering spikes; for a black or red headset, check Direct Mode, GPU connections, ports, cables, and USB detection.
Start with a symptom-and-path diagnosis
Before changing several settings at once, identify whether SteamVR itself is failing or only one demo. This prevents a display-cable change from obscuring a software conflict, or a graphics-setting change from hiding a failing USB path.
| What you see | Most useful first test | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| The demo never starts, SteamVR closes, or the runtime stops responding | Verify SteamVR files, restart, rerun Room Setup, then launch safe mode | Safe mode points toward overlays, utilities, or third-party drivers; failure in safe mode keeps the focus on SteamVR, drivers, or the operating system |
| The demo runs but movement is uneven, freezes, or drops frames | Open SteamVR > Settings > Performance > Display Frame Timing while reproducing the issue | Repeated CPU-side or rendering-side frame-time spikes indicate a sustained performance problem rather than a one-time loading pause |
| The headset is black, red, or not detected | Enable Direct Mode and check that the monitor and Link Box use the same GPU; then test ports and cables | A changed display path implicates the GPU output, cable, adapter, or Link Box; a red screen indicates the compositor cannot go fullscreen |
| Only Linux installations fail to launch | Check the Steam package type, graphics driver, desktop session, and DRM-leasing support | Unsupported Snap or Flatpak packaging, drivers, or compositor configuration can prevent a valid SteamVR session |
The general Steam troubleshooting sequence
Use this order on Windows before moving to more specialized tests. Restarting after each major change makes the result easier to interpret.
- Verify SteamVR tool files. In the Steam client, open the SteamVR tool’s properties and run the option to verify the integrity of its files. Allow Steam to reacquire any damaged or missing files.
- Update the graphics driver. Install the current driver supplied for your GPU model, then restart Windows. Old NVIDIA and AMD drivers can lack support for SteamVR Direct Mode.
- Restart SteamVR completely. Quit SteamVR rather than merely closing the demo, then launch SteamVR again and retest the same demo.
- Rerun Room Setup. Open SteamVR and run Room Setup so the play area and tracking configuration are rebuilt for the current headset position.
- Restart Windows. A full restart clears stuck runtime processes, driver state, and USB device sessions that a SteamVR restart may leave behind.
- Test safe mode if the fault persists. Enter
vrmonitor://safemode/enablein a location that can open SteamVR URLs. Steam describes safe mode as preventing some third-party drivers and components from loading.
If safe mode allows the demo to run, disable or uninstall recently added overlays, monitoring tools, headset utilities, and external drivers one at a time. Retest after each change so you can identify the conflicting component instead of leaving every utility disabled.

When a demo will not launch or SteamVR crashes
Determine whether the demo or the runtime is at fault
Launch another known-good SteamVR application after completing the general sequence. If several applications fail in the same way, treat the issue as a runtime, driver, Windows, or headset-path problem. If one demo fails while SteamVR and other applications remain stable, verify that demo’s files and check its own launch requirements before making broad SteamVR changes.
Use safe mode as a controlled conflict test
Safe mode is diagnostic, not a permanent operating mode. It suppresses selected third-party drivers and components that can interfere with SteamVR. A successful safe-mode launch means the base runtime and headset path can work without at least one of those additions. Exit safe mode, then isolate recent overlays, performance monitors, controller remappers, audio drivers, and other external VR components individually.
Reinstall only after verification fails
SteamVR’s file verification should be the first repair because it replaces damaged tool files without discarding the rest of the installation. If verification reports no repair or the same launch failure returns, reinstall SteamVR and repeat the driver, Room Setup, and restart checks. Record whether the failure occurs before the demo window appears, when the headset initializes, or immediately after loading; that timing is useful when comparing the runtime with an individual application.

Use a repeatable launch test
For each attempt, start from a fully closed SteamVR session, reconnect only the required headset and controllers, and launch the same demo. Note whether the failure occurs before SteamVR opens, while the headset initializes, when the demo window appears, or after entering the scene. Then launch a second known-good application without changing anything else. This controlled comparison separates a demo-specific failure from a runtime-wide failure and prevents a successful launch after a random restart from being mistaken for a permanent repair.
How to diagnose stutter, freezes, and dropped frames
Read Frame Timing while the problem is happening
Open SteamVR > Settings > Performance > Display Frame Timing, start the affected demo, and reproduce the stutter. Look for repeated frame-time excursions rather than a single spike during loading. Valve’s performance documentation explains that the overlay evaluates repeated excursions against a target frame time. A sustained pattern indicates that the system cannot consistently produce frames at the required cadence.
Steam’s troubleshooting guidance says repeated spikes that point to CPU performance should lead you to inspect CPU temperature, dust, and airflow. Clean obstructed vents, confirm that fans are operating, and retest after the system has cooled. If the spikes instead track rendering work, reduce the application’s graphics load and verify the GPU driver before changing unrelated settings.
Apply the low-risk performance fixes
- Update the graphics driver and restart Windows.
- Unplug USB devices that are not needed for the headset, controllers, or essential input. A crowded or unstable USB setup can add another variable while you diagnose frame delivery.
- Set the Windows power plan to High performance for the test.
- For an NVIDIA GPU, set its power-management mode to Prefer maximum performance for the SteamVR application profile or the relevant test.
- Return CPU and GPU overclocks to their default values. A configuration that is stable in ordinary desktop work can still produce VR frame-time spikes.
- Reduce the demo’s rendering load when its settings provide that control. Change one setting at a time and watch Frame Timing after each change.
Check known software and hardware conflicts
Steam lists several components that have been associated with low frame rate, freezing, or interference: Razer Synapse, Asus AI Suite, Avast antivirus, JDS Labs ODAC USB audio, some older Apple Cinema Display USB setups, and the TP-LINK TL-WN881ND wireless adapter. Temporarily close or disable a suspected component only long enough to retest, and restore normal protection and device operation after the diagnosis. If the problem disappears, update or replace the conflicting component rather than permanently running without a needed security or device service.

Separate a transient loading spike from a repeatable fault
SteamVR’s perfcriteria.txt log records the application name, Steam application ID, target frame time, effective resolution, and frame-time history. Compare the log from a run that only stutters while loading with several runs that spike during ordinary movement. A one-time loading excursion is different from repeated excursions throughout the session and should not be treated as proof of a continuous CPU or GPU shortage.
Recommended render resolution is exposed through OpenVR or OpenXR. If the recorded effective resolution is high for the available graphics performance, lower the demo or runtime resolution and retest. Keep the change documented so you can return to the previous value after identifying the cause.
Interpret CPU and rendering symptoms separately
CPU-oriented excursions often appear when background work, thermal throttling, or an unstable overclock interrupts frame production. Check temperatures and airflow while reproducing the issue, not only after the headset is removed. Rendering-oriented excursions are more consistent with an excessive effective resolution, demanding scene settings, or a graphics-driver problem. Do not lower every setting immediately: make one change, repeat the same movement or scene, and compare the timing pattern. This preserves a clear cause-and-effect record.
Fixing a black, red, or undetected headset display
Enable Direct Mode
Enable SteamVR Direct Mode in its display settings. Direct Mode keeps the headset from being treated as an ordinary monitor, which allows SteamVR’s compositor to control the headset output. A red screen means the compositor cannot go fullscreen; another window overlapping the compositor can trigger that condition. Direct Mode and a clean restart are the appropriate first checks before replacing hardware.
Verify the GPU and monitor connection
Confirm that the computer monitor and the headset’s Link Box are connected to the same physical GPU. Using motherboard video output for one path and a discrete GPU output for the other can prevent the compositor from establishing the expected fullscreen path. Check that each plug is fully seated and that the selected port is enabled by the current driver.
Change one part of the video path at a time
- Try another port of the same type on the same GPU.
- If the headset supports it, test a DisplayPort or mini-DisplayPort connection instead of the current output.
- Test a known-compatible HDMI/DisplayPort adapter, or the opposite cable type when the headset and GPU support it.
- Restart SteamVR after each physical change and note whether detection, the red screen, or the black screen changes.
If a different port or cable consistently restores the display, the original port, cable, adapter, or Link Box path is suspect. Only after confirming that diagnosis should you consider a replacement DisplayPort cable for a VR headset; buying a cable before testing the path can leave the actual GPU or driver problem unresolved.
Reset SteamVR USB devices when detection is unreliable
When the headset appears intermittently or the Link Box is not detected, open SteamVR > Settings > Developer > Remove all SteamVR USB Devices. Quit SteamVR, reconnect the Link Box, and relaunch SteamVR. This resets SteamVR’s remembered USB device state; it does not repair a physically damaged port or cable. Reconnect only the essential headset equipment for the first retest.

Avoid common display-path mistakes
Do not change the port, adapter, cable, driver, and Direct Mode setting simultaneously. If the display returns, you will not know which change mattered. Test the same cable on another supported port first, then test the alternate cable or adapter, restarting SteamVR after each physical change. A red screen is a fullscreen-compositor condition, not proof that the headset panel is permanently damaged.

Linux-specific launch failures
SteamVR for Linux requires more than a working headset and a current GPU driver. Valve states that unsupported Steam Snap and Flatpak packages cannot run SteamVR properly. Use the native package for your distribution instead.
Check the three Linux prerequisites
- Native Steam packaging: Replace an unsupported Snap or Flatpak installation with the distribution’s native Steam package.
- Supported graphics drivers: Install the driver appropriate for the GPU and distribution, then restart the session before testing SteamVR.
- DRM leasing compositor: Use a desktop environment or compositor that supports DRM leasing. Valve identifies Ubuntu’s default GNOME Wayland session as unsupported and lists X11, KDE Plasma Wayland, and several wlroots-based compositors as alternatives.
If changing the session fixes launch or display initialization, keep the working session selected for SteamVR tests. Do not interpret a failure in an unsupported package or compositor as proof that the headset or demo itself is defective.
Keep the Linux test environment consistent
Record the package type and desktop session each time you test. Switching between native Steam, Snap, Flatpak, X11, and Wayland during one troubleshooting pass can produce different behavior and obscure the cause. First establish a supported combination, then retest the same demo and headset path without adding unrelated variables.
Use a decision tree instead of changing everything at once
Runtime versus application
If SteamVR closes before any demo starts, focus on files, drivers, safe mode, Room Setup, and Windows. If SteamVR remains open and only one demo fails, verify that demo and compare it with another application before altering the whole runtime.
CPU versus GPU frame time
Frame Timing shows whether repeated excursions are associated with CPU-side work or rendering. CPU-oriented spikes justify temperature, airflow, background-process, and overclock checks. Rendering-oriented spikes justify driver, effective-resolution, and graphics-load checks.
Software conflict versus hardware path
A safe-mode improvement points toward third-party software. A change after moving a port, cable, adapter, or USB connection points toward the physical path. These are different branches; perform the test that matches the symptom.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Transient versus repeatable behavior
Reproduce the issue several times. A single spike during loading is not equivalent to frame-time excursions during every movement, and a one-time display failure after reconnecting a cable is not equivalent to a failure on every launch.

Save the information that lets support distinguish a runtime failure from a performance or connection problem.
- Open SteamVR > Settings > General > Create System Report and save the report.
- Preserve the relevant
perfcriteria.txtfile and note the demo name and Steam application ID if available. - Record whether the issue reproduces after a clean Windows restart, in safe mode, and with alternate ports or cables.
- Write down the GPU model and driver version, headset model, SteamVR version, and Windows or Linux version.
- Describe the exact symptom: launch failure, runtime crash, repeated frame-time spikes, black display, red display, or intermittent detection.
Include the system report and these observations when escalating. A reproducible branch—such as “works in safe mode,” “fails only on one demo,” or “display returns on another port”—is more useful than a general statement that SteamVR is broken.
What to capture in a short test log
Use a simple time-ordered note: the change made, the exact launch result, whether the headset was detected, and whether the symptom returned after a restart. For stutter, record the scene, effective resolution, and whether spikes appeared only during loading or during repeated movement. For display problems, record the GPU port, cable or adapter type, Direct Mode state, and USB reset result. This makes a support report reproducible and prevents repeating tests that already ruled out a branch.
What a successful repair should look like
After the fix, launch the same demo more than once, move through the area that previously triggered the fault, and confirm that the headset remains detected. For a performance repair, check that repeated Frame Timing spikes no longer occur under the same scene and resolution. For a display repair, verify both normal launch and a restart without moving the tested cable, port, or USB connection. Keep the working driver, compositor, and runtime settings recorded so a future update can be compared against a known-good configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does my SteamVR demo stutter even though it launches?
Open SteamVR > Settings > Performance > Display Frame Timing while reproducing the issue. Repeated CPU-side spikes call for temperature, dust, airflow, background-process, and overclock checks. Rendering-side spikes call for a graphics-driver check and a lower effective or application resolution. A single loading spike is not the same as repeated excursions during movement.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →What does SteamVR safe mode actually test?
Safe mode prevents some third-party drivers and components from loading. If the demo works there, isolate recently added overlays, monitoring tools, headset utilities, audio drivers, or other external VR components one at a time. Safe mode is a diagnostic test, not the preferred permanent operating mode.

Why is my headset screen red?
A red screen indicates that the compositor cannot go fullscreen. Enable Direct Mode, close windows that may overlap the compositor, update the GPU driver, and confirm that the monitor and Link Box are connected to the same physical GPU.
What should I do when the headset is black or not detected?
Check Direct Mode, then try another supported port on the same GPU, an alternate DisplayPort or mini-DisplayPort connection, or a known-compatible HDMI/DisplayPort adapter. If USB detection is intermittent, use SteamVR Settings > Developer > Remove all SteamVR USB Devices, quit SteamVR, reconnect the Link Box, and relaunch.
Should I buy a replacement VR cable immediately?
No. First change one port, cable, adapter, or Link Box connection at a time and restart SteamVR after each test. Consider a replacement DisplayPort cable for a VR headset only when a repeatable test shows that the original video path is the failing part.
Which SteamVR conflicts are worth checking?
Steam identifies Razer Synapse, Asus AI Suite, Avast antivirus, JDS Labs ODAC USB audio, some older Apple Cinema Display USB setups, and the TP-LINK TL-WN881ND as possible sources of low frame rate, freezing, or interference. Disable a suspected component only long enough to retest, then restore protection or device services.
Why does a SteamVR demo fail only on Linux?
Verify that Steam is installed through the native distribution package rather than an unsupported Snap or Flatpak package. Confirm supported graphics drivers and use a compositor with DRM leasing. Ubuntu’s default GNOME Wayland session is listed as unsupported; X11, KDE Plasma Wayland, and several wlroots-based compositors are alternatives.
What should I send to Steam support?
Create a report at SteamVR > Settings > General > Create System Report. Include the relevant perfcriteria.txt file, demo name and application ID, GPU and driver, headset, SteamVR version, operating-system version, and notes showing whether safe mode, a restart, an alternate port, or another cable changed the result.
The Bottom Line
Work from the symptom: verify SteamVR files and drivers for launch failures, use safe mode to isolate third-party conflicts, read Frame Timing for repeatable CPU or rendering spikes, and use Direct Mode plus controlled port, cable, GPU, and USB tests for black or red displays. Linux users must also use native Steam packaging, supported drivers, and a DRM-leasing compositor. Save a system report and the relevant performance log once you have a reproducible result.
