SteamCMD Login Failure: No Connection followed by FAILED with result code 3 usually means the server cannot complete a connection to Steam. Start with the host’s DNS, outbound firewall, proxy, security software, and data-center route—not by reinstalling SteamCMD. Then confirm that the login method is allowed for the app, complete Steam Guard if requested, and verify that SteamCMD can write its install and cache directories.
The number 3 is not a diagnosis by itself. The complete output determines whether you have a network failure, Steam Guard denial, missing app entitlement, or a later file-update problem.

What SteamCMD result code 3 actually tells you
The most useful pattern is:
Login Failure: No Connection
FAILED with result code 3That combination indicates that SteamCMD did not establish the required connection. It does not prove that your credentials, SteamCMD files, or game-server files are corrupt. A dated incident report from a hosting customer documented the same output and succeeded after the server was recreated in a different data-center region, which is evidence that provider routing or regional egress can be involved.
Steam Support groups this class of failure with connection problems involving firewalls or routers, security software, and background applications. Treat those as starting points rather than as a guarantee that one particular setting is wrong. A different final line changes the diagnosis:

There is no authoritative published percentage for how often result code 3 occurs or how often each remedy works. Use the observed output and controlled tests instead of assuming a success rate.
Capture the complete SteamCMD transcript first
Do not troubleshoot from the last line alone. Save the entire console output, including the command that was running, timestamps, and whether the process was interactive, scripted, or inside a container.
Record the line that failed
- Write down whether the message says
No Connection, asks for Steam Guard, reportsNo subscription, or appears only afterapp_update. - Note the app ID, install path, login form, host provider, data-center region, and the server’s operating environment.
- Keep the original output when contacting the provider. Removing the decisive line makes routing or filtering investigations much slower.
Separate login failures from update failures
A command can log in successfully and still fail to download or validate files. Conversely, a failed login can cause a script to continue and report a misleading update result. Test the login as its own step before changing game files.
Test the server’s outbound path
Run the checks from the game-server machine, not from your home computer. A workstation may reach Steam while the server’s subnet, security group, or provider route cannot.
Verify name resolution
Confirm that the host can resolve the Steam names required by SteamCMD. A DNS failure, stale resolver, or blocked DNS service can present as a generic “No Connection.” If resolution fails, correct the server’s resolver configuration or the provider’s DNS policy before changing SteamCMD credentials.

Verify outbound HTTPS and Steam connectivity
Test outbound connections from the server to Steam services over the protocols permitted by your environment. A successful connection from another machine does not clear the server’s egress policy. Check for:
- Cloud security groups, network ACLs, or provider egress filters.
- A local host firewall that blocks the SteamCMD process or its outbound traffic.
- An HTTP or SOCKS proxy configured for the host or shell.
- Endpoint security or antivirus software terminating SteamCMD connections.
- Transparent filtering on the provider network.
Steam Support advises using the ports listed in its “Required Ports for Steam” article when your firewall or router requires explicit rules. Use the current list from Steam Support rather than copying an old port list from an unrelated guide. Game-server listen ports are a separate requirement: opening a game’s inbound port does not automatically permit SteamCMD’s outbound session.
Check rules in both directions of the path
On a cloud server, inspect the provider security group and the operating-system firewall. On a physical or virtualized host, also check the upstream router and any corporate or data-center egress policy. Temporarily narrow a test by allowing the SteamCMD executable’s outbound traffic, then remove broad exceptions after the cause is identified.
Retry after restarting the network path
Connection failures can be transient. After recording the output, restart the affected network service or host networking using the procedure appropriate for your operating system and provider. If the host has recently changed routes, wait for the provider’s maintenance or incident to clear, then retry.
Do not infer a bad SteamCMD installation from one unsuccessful connection attempt. A clean retry after the network path is restored distinguishes a transient outage from a repeatable configuration error. If repeated attempts fail at the same point, stop looping and continue with the login, firewall, and region checks below.

Choose the correct SteamCMD login method
Dedicated-server applications differ in what they allow. Many support:
login anonymousAnonymous login is valid only for apps that publish their server files for anonymous access. It is not a universal replacement for an account login.
When an entitled account is required
Private branches, restricted applications, tools, or workshop content may require a Steam account that owns or is otherwise entitled to the app. If SteamCMD reports No subscription, the account is not authorized for that app. Repeating the same password or changing the install directory cannot fix an entitlement failure; use an authorized account or an app branch that the account can access.
Keep account credentials out of shared logs
Run account-based logins only where the server’s access controls and secret storage are appropriate. Avoid placing a password in a world-readable script or pasting it into a support ticket. The important diagnostic distinction is whether Steam rejects the connection before authentication, requests Steam Guard, or accepts the account and later denies the app.
Complete Steam Guard authentication
Valve’s Steamworks guidance identifies Steam Guard as a probable cause when an account login is denied. If SteamCMD prompts for a code, retrieve it from the account’s email and enter it with:

set_steam_guard_code <code>Then retry the login. Replace <code> with the one-time value; do not include the angle brackets.
Make the authentication cache persistent
SteamCMD stores Steam data used by subsequent sessions. In a container, mount the Steam data or home directory to persistent storage and ensure the runtime user can write it. If the cache disappears at every restart, Steam Guard may prompt repeatedly even though the account and code are correct.

A read-only or incorrectly owned cache can look like a login problem because SteamCMD cannot save the authenticated state. Verify the directory used for Steam data is writable by the same user that launches SteamCMD. Correct ownership and permissions rather than running the whole server as an unrestricted administrator.
Use a known-good command order
Set the installation directory before requesting an update. A minimal sequence is:
force_install_dir /srv/game
login anonymous
app_update <appid> validate
quitReplace /srv/game with the intended path and <appid> with the game’s numeric app ID. The validate option checks for missing or corrupt server files and repairs them; it does not solve a failed login or grant an account access.

Automate failures safely
For unattended runs, include:
@ShutdownOnFailedCommand 1
force_install_dir /srv/game
login anonymous
app_update <appid> validate
quit@ShutdownOnFailedCommand 1 stops the script when a command fails. Without it, an unsuccessful login can be followed by an update command and a misleading “completed” job in automation logs.

Use separate tests for separate faults
- Run the login and observe whether Steam accepts it, requests Steam Guard, or reports a connection failure.
- Only after login succeeds, run
app_update <appid> validate. - If the update alone fails, investigate entitlement, branch selection, storage, and file permissions rather than returning to network troubleshooting.
Check permissions, disk space, and cache storage
The account that runs SteamCMD needs write access to both the game installation directory and Steam’s data/cache directory. A directory that can be read but not written can produce repeated updates, repeated Steam Guard prompts, or an apparent login loop.
Host installations
- Confirm the service account owns or can write to the path supplied to
force_install_dir. - Confirm the same account can create and modify Steam data files in its home or configured data directory.
- Check available disk space before a validation or large update; an interrupted write can leave files incomplete.
Containers and volumes
Match the ownership of mounted host volumes to the container’s runtime UID and GID. Persist the Steam data directory as well as the game directory. A volume mounted with root ownership while SteamCMD runs as an unprivileged user commonly causes cache-write failures; changing only the game volume leaves the authentication problem in place.
Test another host or data-center region
If DNS, firewall, proxy, security software, and permissions are correct, run the identical login and command sequence from a known-good host. Keep the credentials, app ID, and command order constant so that the host or route is the variable being tested.
Interpret the comparison

A documented code-3 incident succeeded after moving from a New York data center to London. That example does not establish that London is universally better; it shows why a regional comparison is a useful diagnostic.
What to give the hosting provider
- Exact UTC timestamps for failed and successful attempts.
- The complete SteamCMD output, including
Login Failure: No Connectionand result code 3. - The server’s public IP, data-center region, and whether a proxy or security layer is present.
- The result from the comparison host or region.
Ask the provider to investigate routing, outbound filtering, or an IP-reputation block. Do not ask them to “fix SteamCMD” without the evidence that the path differs by region.
Targeted fixes by symptom
The failure is immediate and says “No Connection”
- Confirm DNS resolution from the game server.
- Check host firewall, cloud security groups, proxy settings, antivirus, and egress filtering.
- Verify the provider’s required Steam connectivity rules and retry after restarting the network path.
- Run the same command from another host or region if the failure persists.
The command asks for Steam Guard
- Retrieve the current code from the account email.
- Enter
set_steam_guard_code <code>in the SteamCMD session. - Retry the login.
- Persist and make writable the Steam data directory so the authentication state can be retained.
The message is “No subscription”
- Confirm the app ID and branch are the ones you intend to install.
- Use anonymous login only if that app permits it.
- Otherwise use an account that owns or is entitled to the app.
Login succeeds but the update fails
- Verify that
force_install_dirappears beforeapp_update. - Run
app_update <appid> validateto check for missing or corrupt files. - Check write permissions and free storage for both the install and Steam data paths.
- Use
@ShutdownOnFailedCommand 1in automation so the failed step is visible.
Prevent future code-3 incidents
- Keep a tested SteamCMD script with the directory, login method, app ID, validation option, and shutdown-on-failure setting explicit.
- Persist Steam data and set correct ownership whenever SteamCMD runs in a container.
- Document the provider region, security-group rules, host firewall policy, and proxy settings for the server.
- Retain complete logs with timestamps so a transient outage can be distinguished from a repeatable route failure.
- Test a second host or region before rebuilding the server; a successful comparison can prevent an unnecessary reinstall.
Code 3 is best treated as a branching diagnosis: first identify the exact output, then test the network path, login authorization, Steam Guard state, command order, and write access in that order. When only one provider region fails, escalate the evidence to the host instead of repeatedly changing credentials or game files.
