If a Steam Machine game will not start, first restart the machine and install every pending SteamOS and Steam client update. Then verify the game’s files, check whether security software quarantined its executable, and test a different Proton version from Properties > Compatibility. Those steps fix the most common failures without deleting saves or changing system-wide settings. If the game still crashes, collect the exact error, SteamOS version, Proton version and newest crash report before contacting the game’s support team.
SteamOS is Linux-based, and many Windows games run through Valve’s Proton compatibility layer. A complete download therefore does not guarantee that a title will launch: the failure may be damaged files, a blocked executable, a Proton regression, anti-cheat or launcher requirements, a graphics/shader problem, or a title-specific bug.
Use this repair order first
Work from the least disruptive action to the most diagnostic. Change one thing at a time so you know which step helped. The sequence below applies to a Steam Machine running SteamOS, including compatible third-party devices; hardware-specific support can differ, so consult the device manufacturer when the problem affects the whole system rather than one game.

Do not begin by deleting prefixes, reinstalling SteamOS or removing personal files. Those actions are broader than the symptoms justify and can erase useful diagnostic information.

1. Restart the Steam Machine and install updates
Restart completely
- Exit the game and return to the Steam menu.
- Choose the system’s Power menu and select Restart, not merely sleep or display-off mode.
- After SteamOS returns, wait for Steam to finish reconnecting before launching the game again.
A restart clears a stuck game process, reloads graphics services and lets a previously staged update complete. If Steam reports that a game is still running even though no window is visible, restarting is the first corrective action.
Apply SteamOS and Steam client updates
- Open Settings from the Steam menu.
- Open the system or software-update section and install every available SteamOS update.
- Allow Steam to restart when requested, then check for a Steam client update and apply it.
- Retry the game before changing compatibility settings.
Valve describes SteamOS updates as the mechanism for platform and driver maintenance. A game that breaks after an update may need a newer runtime or a repaired generated cache, so update first rather than assuming that the game itself is permanently incompatible.
2. Verify the game’s installed files
Verification is the first repair for a missing or corrupted installation. Steam compares the local files with the game’s manifest and downloads replacements when they differ. It does not normally remove your cloud saves or unrelated games.
- Open your Library and highlight the affected game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files (the label can vary slightly by Steam client version).
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for the process to finish. If Steam downloads replacement files, let that download complete before launching.
Verification is especially appropriate when Steam reports a missing executable, when a download was interrupted, or when the game suddenly returns to the library. Steam identifies antivirus interference, corrupted files and failed downloads as common causes of missing-executable errors.
What verification can and cannot fix
- Can fix: absent or damaged files that differ from Steam’s manifest.
- Usually cannot fix: a Proton regression, an unsupported anti-cheat configuration, a broken third-party launcher account, a graphics-driver bug or a server-side outage.
- May not re-download: files that are valid according to the manifest but are incompatible with the current Proton or game update.
If verification reports that all files are valid but the game still fails, continue to the next diagnostic rather than repeating verification indefinitely.

3. Check antivirus and other security software
On a Steam Machine, security software can quarantine a game executable or block a process that Proton needs to start. This often looks like a missing-executable error or an immediate return to the library.
- Open the security product’s quarantine, history or blocked-items view.
- Search for the affected game’s executable and any related launcher file.
- Confirm the path and file name belong to the game you installed. Do not restore an unknown file merely because its name resembles the game.
- If the detection is a false positive, restore the file and add the game’s installation directory to the product’s allow list according to that product’s documented procedure.
- Run Steam’s file verification again so a legitimate replacement is downloaded if necessary.
- Launch the game once. If the security alert returns, record the detection name and send it to the game developer or security vendor instead of repeatedly disabling protection.
Do not permanently turn off system protection as a troubleshooting shortcut. A quarantine record, detection name and file path are more useful to support than an unexplained security exception.

4. Change Proton for this game
Proton translates many Windows games’ calls into the Linux environment used by SteamOS. Because each game uses different engines, launchers, codecs, graphics features and anti-cheat components, one Proton release can work while another fails. A forced Proton choice is a reversible, per-game test.
Set a specific compatibility tool
- Open the game’s page in your Steam Library.
- Open Properties.
- Select Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Choose an installed official Proton option from the list.
- Close Properties and launch the game.
Test one installed option at a time and write down the version you tried. If the game fails, return to the same menu and test another available official Proton version. If a forced choice makes things worse, disable the checkbox to return to the default selection.
How to interpret the result

Do not treat a Proton change as proof that a title is permanently supported. It is a controlled test, not a guarantee for every SteamOS build, hardware revision, display mode or peripheral setup.

5. Match the fix to the crash symptom
The game says an executable is missing
Verify the files first, then inspect quarantine or blocked-item history. A failed download, corrupted file or security action can all produce this symptom. If the executable is restored but immediately removed again, preserve the detection details and involve the developer or security vendor.

The game returns to the Steam menu immediately
Restart, verify files and check security software. If those checks pass, test another Proton version. An immediate return can also indicate an unsupported launcher or anti-cheat requirement; the compatibility rating and the game’s support documentation are more authoritative than a generic Proton change in that situation.
The game crashes after logos or during the first loading screen
Update SteamOS and Steam, then test a different Proton version. If the failure began directly after an update and support evidence identifies a damaged generated shader cache, clear that cache and retry. Cache deletion is not a universal fix: it should be used when the symptom and available support guidance point to cache corruption.
The game crashes only with a specific display or peripheral
Return to a simple configuration for testing: use the default display mode, disconnect nonessential peripherals and launch once. If the game works, reconnect devices one at a time and record the setting that reintroduces the crash. This isolates a display-mode or peripheral interaction without changing the game installation.
Steam reports “app already running”
- Restart the Steam Machine.
- After reboot, launch the normal Steam client rather than a beta client, if you have opted into a beta channel.
- Try the game once.
- If the message persists, record the exact text and contact the game’s support team with the requested logs.
The error can represent a stuck process, a client-state problem or a title-specific failure. Repeatedly clicking Play does not clear the underlying state.

6. Understand Steam Machine compatibility ratings
Valve’s Steamworks documentation explains that compatibility results are translated into customer-visible Steam Deck and Steam Machine ratings. A rating is a screening signal based on Valve’s testing findings; it is not a promise that every title will launch on every SteamOS build, hardware revision, display mode or peripheral setup.
Why a title can be marked Unsupported
- A Proton-specific blocking bug prevents launch or makes the game unplayable.
- Anti-cheat technology is not configured for the SteamOS environment.
- A required third-party launcher fails under the compatibility layer.
- Performance or graphics problems prevent a usable experience.
- A required input, video or account flow has not been validated.
The label does not identify which of these causes applies to your machine. Open the game’s compatibility details and the developer’s support information, then compare them with your exact symptom.
What the rating cannot tell you
- It cannot guarantee behavior after a SteamOS, Proton or game update.
- It cannot guarantee the same result on every SteamOS-compatible third-party device.
- It cannot guarantee a particular monitor, dock, controller, headset or other peripheral combination.
- It cannot replace a title-specific support statement for launchers or anti-cheat.
Valve says the vast majority of the Steam library runs on SteamOS through Proton, with more than 18,000 titles noted on its SteamOS page when accessed in 2026. That figure describes the breadth of the library, not a crash rate or a guarantee for an individual game.

Shaders are generated data used to prepare graphics work. A damaged generated cache can contribute to a crash after an update, but deleting caches should not be the default response to every launch failure. It can force the game to rebuild data and may increase the next launch time.
- Install pending SteamOS, Steam and game updates.
- Restart the Steam Machine.
- Verify the game files and test the default or a documented working Proton version.
- Only if support guidance or the timing of the crash points to a damaged shader cache, use the Steam interface’s cache-clearing option for that game, where available.
- Launch the game and allow shader processing to finish without interrupting it.
Keep the newest crash report before deleting generated data. If clearing the cache changes nothing, do not repeat the operation; move to evidence collection and escalation.

8. Gather evidence before contacting support
A developer can act on a reproducible symptom and version combination. “It crashes” is much less useful than the exact sequence that causes it.
Record these details
- Game name and the game’s current version or build, if shown.
- The exact error text, including capitalization and punctuation.
- Whether the game fails before a window appears, after logos, at a launcher or during loading.
- SteamOS version and Steam client version.
- The Proton or Steam Play tool selected when the failure occurred.
- Whether the issue affects one game or several.
- Recent SteamOS, Steam, game or hardware changes.
- Display, dock, controller, headset and other connected peripherals relevant to the failure.
- The newest crash report and any security-product detection name or quarantine path.
Preserve the newest crash report
Do not overwrite or discard the latest report while trying multiple settings. Support guidance for crash troubleshooting commonly asks for the newest report because it reflects the current failure. Attach it through the game developer’s official support channel, following that channel’s upload and privacy instructions.
Use a reproducible test
- Restart the machine.
- Launch the game with one documented configuration.
- Note the exact step at which it fails.
- Make one change, such as a different Proton version, and repeat.
- Compare the two outcomes and include both configurations in your report.
For an “app already running” failure, Steam Support advises restarting and testing the normal client rather than a beta client; if the title still fails, contact that game’s support team. The developer or publisher owns the title-specific diagnosis.

9. Decide whether the problem is local or title-specific

This distinction prevents a full-system reset for a single broken installation and prevents repeated file verification when the evidence points to a platform-wide problem.
10. When reinstalling is justified
Reinstalling the game is a later option, not the opening move. Consider it only when verification repeatedly finds files it cannot repair, the installation remains incomplete, or support specifically recommends a clean installation.
- Confirm cloud synchronization has completed if you rely on cloud saves.
- Back up any local saves or configuration files the game does not synchronize.
- Uninstall only the affected game, not SteamOS, unless device support directs a system recovery.
- Reinstall to the intended storage location and let every update finish.
- Test the default compatibility setting before adding custom launch options or a forced Proton tool.
A clean reinstall cannot repair an unsupported anti-cheat setup, a broken external launcher service or a system-wide graphics problem, so match the scope of the action to the evidence.
