Start by identifying whether the problem is consistently low rendering performance, uneven frame delivery (micro-stutter), or online network delay. Reproduce the symptom in the same scene, enable Steam’s in-game performance monitor, and then change one reversible setting at a time. Lowering render resolution, reducing demanding effects, adjusting upscaling, and checking refresh-rate, VSync, and frame-cap behavior can improve many games, but no single setting fixes every title. If several games remain affected after software and display checks, use Steam Support for device-specific diagnosis rather than applying Windows-only repair steps to SteamOS.
First determine what “lag” means on your Steam Machine
Players use lag for several different problems. The remedy depends on whether the machine cannot render frames quickly enough, delivers frames unevenly, or is waiting for an online server.

Steam’s performance-monitor guidance distinguishes average FPS from micro-stutter: a satisfactory average can still feel poor when frames arrive unevenly. Valve’s general hardware troubleshooting information also notes that slow frames can come from inefficient game code, a game bug, or hardware trouble. That general article is written for Windows, so its Windows-specific procedures should not be treated as SteamOS instructions.

Establish a repeatable baseline before changing settings
Reproduce the same scene
- Launch the affected game and load a repeatable location, such as the same save, benchmark, race, or opening section.
- Play the route for several minutes without changing settings. Note whether the problem occurs during combat, traversal, menus, loading, or only in a crowded area.
- Repeat the test after each change. Record average FPS and whether the hitching feels less frequent or less severe.
A problem limited to one game makes a title-specific bug, shader behavior, or settings interaction plausible; it does not prove that the game is at fault. If several unrelated games show the same behavior, a shared SteamOS, display, or hardware condition becomes more important to investigate.

Use Steam’s in-game performance monitor
Open the Steam in-game overlay while the game is running and enable the built-in performance monitor. The exact menu location and detail level can vary with the SteamOS release. Use the monitor to observe average FPS together with the available frame-time or performance information. Do not dismiss a stutter merely because the average FPS number is high: a few long frame times can create visible hitches that an average conceals.
- Keep the monitor at a level that does not obscure the test scene.
- Compare the same camera movement or route before and after a change.
- Note whether the issue happens at regular intervals, during asset streaming, or only when a particular effect appears.
Fix consistently low average FPS
When the frame rate is low throughout a demanding scene, reduce the amount of work the GPU and CPU must complete. Apply changes in the order below so you can identify which compromise helped.
1. Lower the game’s render resolution
Reduce the in-game resolution one step and repeat the baseline scene. Rendering fewer pixels can produce a substantial improvement, but the image may look softer. If the game separates display resolution from render resolution, change the render value first so the display output remains appropriate for the screen.

2. Use the game’s own upscaler when available
An upscaler renders internally at a lower resolution and reconstructs an image for output. Start with a moderate quality mode, then compare clarity in text, foliage, motion, and fine geometry. Aggressive modes can introduce softness, shimmering, or other artifacts. Upscaling can also change latency indirectly if it raises the frame rate, so judge responsiveness as well as the counter.
3. Reduce the most expensive graphics options
Lower shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, crowd density, and similar demanding options one at a time. Ray tracing deserves special attention: in some demanding workloads, a reviewer’s 2026 Steam Machine testing found poor results with ray tracing. That is game- and configuration-specific evidence, not a universal benchmark, so test the title’s own ray-tracing toggle rather than assuming every game behaves identically.

4. Treat frame generation as a trade-off, not a free FPS increase
Frame-generation modes can raise the displayed frame count by inserting generated frames, but they do not necessarily raise the underlying game simulation rate. They may add input latency or produce ghosting and other artifacts. A PC Gamer reviewer reported 58–61 FPS in Cyberpunk 2077 at 4K with medium settings, ray tracing disabled, FSR set to Performance, and 2× frame generation; the same test described the underlying base rate as about 30 FPS. Those figures describe that reviewer’s hardware, software build, scene, and settings, not a promise for every Steam Machine owner.

5. Re-test at the target display mode
A setting that looks good in a quiet interior may fail in an outdoor or combat scene. Keep the chosen resolution and quality level only if the repeatable worst-case scene remains acceptable. Otherwise, make the next smallest reduction rather than dropping every option to its minimum.
Fix micro-stutter when average FPS seems adequate
Look for uneven frame times
Micro-stutter is a frame-pacing problem: most frames may be fast, but occasional long frames break the rhythm. Use the monitor’s frame-time information while repeating the scene. If the graph or readings show spikes that match the visible hitch, concentrate on pacing and synchronization rather than immediately lowering every quality setting.
Test refresh rate and VSync as a controlled experiment
Refresh rate determines how often the display can present a new image; VSync coordinates presentation with that refresh cycle. Steam’s help guidance explains their relationship, but it does not identify one universal combination that eliminates stutter. Change one of the game or display settings, repeat the same scene, and compare. Record which state produced the smoother result and whether input feels less responsive.
Check frame caps without stacking unexplained limits
A frame cap can make output cadence more predictable, but the correct value depends on the display refresh rate, the game’s own limiter, and the synchronization mode. Avoid enabling several independent caps at once unless you know which one is controlling presentation. If a game has an internal limiter, test it separately from a platform-level limit, then keep the configuration that gives the most consistent frame times with acceptable latency.

A brief hitch when a new area or effect appears is different from a continuously uneven frame rate. Mark when the hitch occurs and whether it repeats at the same location. A repeatable, title-specific hitch may require a game patch or a different quality setting; do not infer a failing Steam Machine from one game’s streaming behavior.

Understand what gamescope can and cannot tell you
Valve’s gamescope project documents controls for frame-rate caps, game and output resolution, and FSR 1.0 upscaling. These capabilities explain why a cap or scaling approach may exist in the Steam graphics stack. Documentation of a capability does not establish that every command-line option is exposed in the current Steam Machine’s standard Gaming Mode interface.
Prefer settings that are visibly available in the game or SteamOS interface. If you use an advanced launch option, change only one variable, write down the original value, and remove it if the game fails to start, the overlay becomes unavailable, or frame pacing worsens. Do not present a documented gamescope example as a guaranteed menu path for every SteamOS release.
Do not confuse network lag with low FPS
Rendering changes cannot repair a delayed online connection. If your character moves smoothly in an offline section but other players teleport, hits register late, or the game reports connection warnings, investigate the online symptom separately. Compare the same game offline when possible and check whether another online title shows the delay.
The available evidence does not establish a Steam Machine-specific network fix for this problem. Keep a record of the game, region or server information shown by the title, and whether the local frame monitor remains stable while the network symptom occurs. That information helps support distinguish network delay from a local rendering problem.
Install current SteamOS and game updates
Before treating a behavior as a hardware defect, install available SteamOS and game updates and repeat the same test. Valve’s August 2022 Steam Deck release notes listed fixes for random stutter and performance drops. That history demonstrates that software can introduce or remove performance regressions; it does not establish that the same defect exists on the current Steam Machine.
- Read the current SteamOS update notes for performance, display, or game-compatibility changes.
- Read the affected game’s patch notes for stutter, shader, rendering, or frame-pacing fixes.
- After updating, retest the unchanged baseline scene before changing settings again.

Use a rollback-friendly troubleshooting record
Write down the original values before each experiment. A compact record should include the game and scene, SteamOS and game versions, display refresh rate, resolution, upscaling mode, ray tracing state, frame-generation state, cap or VSync state, average FPS, and what the hitch felt like. This prevents you from losing a known-good configuration and gives support a reproducible description.

Seek device-specific Steam Support guidance when several games remain affected after updates, repeatable testing, and reversible graphics and display checks. Include your troubleshooting record and state whether the issue is low average FPS, micro-stutter, or network delay. Do not follow a Windows-only hardware procedure on SteamOS simply because it appears in Valve’s general troubleshooting article; request instructions appropriate to the Steam Machine and its installed SteamOS release.
