Most Steam Deck launch and performance problems can be isolated without resetting the device. On either the LCD or OLED model, install SteamOS updates, restart, temporarily close third-party Desktop Mode applications, check the game’s Deck Verified notes, then test a per-game Proton setting and verify the installation. If the game launches but performs poorly, lower its graphics load. Reserve SteamOS beta testing, rollback, repair, or re-imaging for problems affecting multiple games or the system itself.
Start with the least disruptive fixes
Work through these steps in order and retest the same game after each meaningful change. This keeps a reversible game-specific problem from turning into an unnecessary system reset.
- Update SteamOS: open Steam > Settings > System > Software Updates and install any available update.
- Restart the Deck: choose Steam > Power > Restart after the update finishes.
- Close Desktop Mode add-ons: if you installed third-party tools or overlays from Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily, then test the game again. Valve lists third-party applications as a possible source of instability.
- Classify the failure: note whether the game never opens, stops at “Preparing to Launch,” crashes after opening, or launches but runs with stutter or a low frame rate. The later steps differ by symptom.
These instructions are based on Valve’s Steam Deck Software Info & Troubleshooting Guide. Menus and software behavior can change as SteamOS is updated, so use the labels currently shown on your Deck.

Use the Deck Verified rating as a diagnostic clue
Valve says, “The Deck Verified system has four categories that indicate how well games will work on Steam Deck.” The four categories are Verified, Playable, Unsupported, and Unknown.
| Category | What it tells you | How to use it while troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | Valve’s checks found the game meets its current compatibility requirements. | Still check for a game update, launcher change, or broken local state; the badge is not a promise that every future update or configuration will work unchanged. |
| Playable | The game runs, but may require manual adjustments or include an interaction that is less convenient on Deck. | Open the game’s Store page and read the Steam Deck Compatibility section for the specific requirement or limitation. |
| Unsupported | Valve’s assessment found a requirement that the game does not currently meet on Deck. | Read the Store-page explanation before spending time on repeated reinstalls. A workaround may exist, but it is not assured. |
| Unknown | Valve has not assigned a compatibility assessment. | Treat community reports and your own test as provisional rather than as a compatibility guarantee. |
To inspect the details, open the game’s Store page and scroll to its Steam Deck Compatibility section. Valve identifies which Verified requirements a Playable or Unsupported title does not meet. A rating describes Valve’s assessment at a point in time; it does not guarantee that a later game patch, launcher update, anti-cheat change, or altered game state will behave identically.
Use the rating to choose the next test, not to decide that troubleshooting is pointless. A Playable label may tell you that a manual control or text-entry step is awkward, while an Unsupported label may identify a requirement the Deck cannot currently satisfy. An Unknown label means there is less official information, so a reproducible test on your own installation matters more. Even a Verified game can stop launching after its developer changes a launcher or after a local configuration becomes invalid.

Choose between the native Linux build and Proton
Steam games may offer a native Linux version, or Steam may run the Windows version through Steam Play’s Proton compatibility layer. Neither path is universally best. Use the game’s Deck notes and the result of a controlled test to decide.
| Path | When to try it | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Native Linux version | Steam selects it and the game’s Deck guidance indicates that this build is expected to work. | Some games have a separate Linux build with different updates, launchers, or features from the Windows build. |
| Windows version through Proton | The native build fails, lacks a needed feature, or Valve’s guidance points toward a compatibility tool. | Forcing Proton can make Steam download the Windows files if only the Linux version is installed. Stability and performance remain game-specific. |
Do not assume that a particular Proton release fixes every title. If you need game-specific leads, Valve’s general launch guidance points Linux users running Windows games with Proton toward the Steam Play community discussion forum; treat reports there as experiments to evaluate, not guarantees for your installation.
Compare the two paths by four observations: whether the game reaches its menu, whether its launcher and controller input work, whether Steam has to download another build, and whether the resulting performance is stable. If a Proton test is worse, undo the per-game override rather than changing the whole Deck. If it is better, record the selected tool and game version so you can identify a regression after a future update.

- In Gaming Mode, highlight the game in your Library.
- Press the Deck’s Menu button (the button with three horizontal lines).
- Choose Properties, then open Compatibility.
- Enable the option to force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version available in the list, close Properties, and launch the game.
If the game had only its Linux files installed, Steam may download the Windows build after you force a compatibility tool. That download is expected and can require substantial additional storage. If the new setting makes the result worse, return to the same screen and disable the forced tool so Steam can use its default choice.
Test one Proton change at a time. Record whether the game reaches its menu, whether a launcher or controller input works, and whether the crash occurs at a different point. This gives you a useful comparison without confusing a Proton change with an unrelated game update.
Forcing Proton is appropriate for the individual Steam title you are testing. It is not evidence that every game should use Proton, and it does not repair a failing SteamOS installation. If the compatibility menu is unavailable or the game is not a Steam installation, this particular procedure may not apply; use the title’s Store-page notes and Valve’s general launch guidance instead.
Verify the game’s installed files
A damaged or incomplete download can cause a launch crash, missing content, or a game that stops during startup. Valve’s file-check procedure is reversible and does not require reinstalling the entire Deck.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Highlight the game in the Library and press Menu.
- Open Properties, then choose Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to finish, then launch the game again.
Verification can take several minutes. Valve notes that one or more files may fail verification normally because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced. A failed-file message therefore does not automatically mean the installation is still corrupted. Read the result, allow Steam to reacquire files when it offers to do so, and retest before repeating the check.
Verification checks the selected game, not the entire Deck. It is therefore a sensible response when one title crashes or reports missing content, but it will not resolve a system-wide update failure or instability in several unrelated games. If the same title still fails after verification, return to its compatibility rating and Proton choice instead of repeatedly running the same check.
The official procedure and its local-configuration caveat are documented in Valve’s Verify Integrity of Game Files guide.

Fix a game that launches but runs poorly
When the game opens, concentrate on reducing the work the Deck must do rather than changing compatibility layers at random. Valve’s guidance is to lower the graphics preset or adjust individual settings; there is no universal preset or guaranteed frame rate for every game.
Lower the overall preset first
Open the game’s video or graphics menu and select a lower preset. Apply the change, play the same demanding scene for a few minutes, and see whether stutter or frame-time spikes improve. If they do, raise settings individually until you find the feature that causes the largest load.
Reduce the settings that usually cost the most
- Lower resolution or render scale if the game is GPU-limited.
- Reduce shadows, reflections, volumetric effects, ambient occlusion, and view distance when those options are available.
- Reduce texture quality if memory pressure causes hitching; keep it higher when the game remains smooth and has sufficient memory.
- Disable or reduce costly post-processing effects such as motion blur if they hurt clarity or performance.
Change one or two settings, then retest. A lower preset can improve consistency even when the average frame rate appears acceptable, while a setting that looks harmless may create severe spikes in a particular area. Avoid treating another player’s configuration as a guaranteed solution for your Deck, game version, or display resolution.
If performance is poor only after connecting a monitor or television, do not judge the handheld settings from that test. An external display can require a different in-game resolution and graphics load. Test the same scene on the built-in screen first, then tune the docked profile separately.
Check the dock and external-display branch separately
If the problem appears only when the Deck is connected to a monitor or television, isolate the display setup before changing the handheld game installation. Valve notes that docked image quality or performance may require in-game adjustments and, depending on the setup, a different cable or input connector.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Test the game undocked. If it is smooth on the built-in screen, the external resolution, refresh rate, cable, or display path is a likely factor.
- Try a lower in-game resolution or graphics load for the external display.
- Reseat the cable and, if available, test another compatible cable or input on the display.
- Remember that third-party USB-C docks and hubs may work, but Valve does not officially support Thunderbolt or DisplayLink docks.
These are dock-specific checks, not a general reason to buy a dock for a handheld launch failure. Valve’s display guidance is in Docking the Steam Deck.
Escalate when ordinary troubleshooting does not hold
If one title still fails after its compatibility test and file verification, first compare with another game. A single-game failure generally belongs in the game’s compatibility or installation branch. If several games crash, Gaming Mode is unstable, updates fail, or the Deck has problems outside Steam games, treat it as a system issue.

Try the Steam Deck Beta only as a diagnostic step
After updates, a restart, and removal of third-party Desktop Mode variables have not solved persistent stability or performance trouble, Valve suggests trying the Steam Deck Beta. Beta software contains changing fixes and regressions; participation is a test of newer changes, not a guaranteed repair. If the issue begins after joining, return to the stable channel and report the behavior through Valve’s support channels.
Use Valve’s support and community channels
For reproducible failures, collect the game name, Deck model (LCD or OLED), SteamOS channel, whether you used the native build or Proton, the Proton version, and the exact point of failure. Then consult SteamOS/Steam Deck Discussions and contact Steam Support. Include what you already tried so support can distinguish a game-specific issue from a system regression.
Community discussion can reveal useful game-specific experiments, especially for Windows titles running through Proton, but an anecdote does not establish a guaranteed fix. Note the game’s current update and your own result when reporting back. That prevents an old workaround from being mistaken for a current Valve-supported solution.
Reserve recovery and re-imaging for broad SteamOS failures
Recovery tools can repair system-level problems, but they are disproportionate for one game that will not launch. Read Valve’s current instructions immediately before using any recovery option because menu labels and available choices can change.
| Option | Scope | Data consequence | Appropriate use |
|---|---|---|---|
| SteamOS Beta | Changes the software channel to test newer updates. | Your user data is not inherently erased, but the channel can introduce bugs and can be changed again. | Persistent stability or performance trouble after stable-channel updates and restart. |
| Rollback to a previous known-good OS | Returns system software to an earlier version. | Valve documents rollback as retaining user data. | A system problem began after an OS update and affects more than one game or feature. |
| Factory reset | Resets the Deck to its initial state. | Removes local user data; back up anything important first. | Broad software corruption when less destructive options have failed. |
| Erase user data | Deletes local user content and settings. | Local data is removed. | Only when you deliberately accept the loss and have secured needed files. |
| SteamOS repair or re-image | Repairs or reinstalls system software. | Repair and re-image have different effects; re-imaging wipes the device according to Valve’s warning. | Severe system failure, after support guidance and a verified backup. |
These choices are not interchangeable. Beta participation changes the software channel; rollback changes the OS version while retaining user data; factory reset and erase-user-data remove local content; repair and re-image reinstall or replace system software, with re-imaging carrying a wipe warning. Confirm which action you are selecting and what you have backed up before proceeding.
Valve’s recovery choices are described in SteamOS Recovery and Troubleshooting and its repair/re-image distinctions in SteamOS Installation and Repair. Do not factory-reset or re-image solely because one game is marked Playable, fails after a launcher update, or needs a different Proton setting.
A practical decision path
- Nothing happens or the game stops at launch: update, restart, close third-party Desktop Mode apps, inspect the Deck notes, test Proton per game, then verify files.
- The game launches and is slow or stuttery: lower the preset and expensive individual settings; test undocked if the issue appears only on an external display.
- Only one game fails: keep troubleshooting that title’s compatibility tool, files, launcher, and Store-page requirements.
- Many games or SteamOS features fail: test the Beta only after stable-channel basics, contact Valve, and consider rollback or recovery according to the data consequences.
This order keeps the likely, reversible fixes first and prevents a game-level problem from becoming an avoidable loss of local data.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Deck Verified game always launch?
No. Verified is Valve’s compatibility assessment at a point in time, not a promise that every later game patch, launcher update, anti-cheat change, or local game state will work unchanged. Check the Store-page notes and troubleshoot the current installation.
Should I use Proton or the native Linux version?
Use the path indicated by the game’s Deck guidance, then compare the result. A native build may have different updates or features, while forcing Proton can download the Windows build if only Linux files were installed. Stability and performance are game-specific.
Why did Steam download more files after I forced Proton?
Forcing a Steam Play compatibility tool can make Steam install the Windows version when the Linux version was previously installed. The additional download is expected and may require substantial extra storage.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Does a failed file-verification message mean the game is corrupted?
Not necessarily. Valve says local configuration files can normally fail verification because they should not be replaced. Let Steam complete the check, reacquire files when offered, and retest before repeating it.
Is lowering graphics settings a fix for launch crashes?
Graphics reductions are aimed at games that launch but stutter or run slowly. For a title that never opens, prioritize updates, restart, compatibility notes, a per-game Proton test, and file verification.
When should I try the Steam Deck Beta?
Only after stable-channel updates, a restart, and temporarily disabling third-party Desktop Mode applications have not resolved persistent stability or performance problems. Beta software can introduce regressions, so treat it as a diagnostic test rather than a guaranteed repair.
Will recovery or re-imaging delete my games and files?
The consequences differ. Valve documents rollback as retaining user data, while factory reset and erase-user-data remove local content. Repair and re-image have different effects, and re-imaging carries a device-wipe warning. Read Valve’s current instructions and back up important data first.
The Bottom Line
Update SteamOS, restart, close third-party Desktop Mode tools, read the game’s Deck Compatibility notes, then test Proton and verify files for that title. If it launches but performs poorly, lower its graphics settings and isolate any docked-display issue. Contact Valve before using rollback, reset, repair, or re-imaging; those options are for broader SteamOS failures and can remove local data.
