If Steam says it is online but you cannot sign in, connect to Friends, reach a game server, or download a game, that status does not prove every Steam service or network route is working. First check whether Steam is having a wider outage; then identify which feature is failing and test your own connection in a controlled order. This helps distinguish a Steam-side problem from Wi-Fi or router trouble, a firewall rule, managed-network restrictions, or a download and installation bottleneck.
Start by identifying what is—and is not—working
Steam connectivity is not one all-or-nothing connection. The client can appear online while sign-in, Friends, a particular game server, or content delivery is having a separate problem. Before changing settings, write down the exact error message and note where it appears. In particular, distinguish “I can’t sign in” from a game-server error, a slow download, or “SECURE CONNECTION FAILED.”
- Steam will not sign in: focus first on Steam availability, authentication, and the computer’s route to Steam.
- Friends will not connect: check Steam service status and whether other Steam features still work.
- One game server fails: compare it with several other servers before treating the issue as a home-network failure.
- Downloads are slow or cannot reach content servers: check the download region, network filtering, units, and—on Steam Deck—whether installation storage is limiting progress.
- Only Steam fails while other sites work: the computer still may have a Steam-specific firewall, routing, DNS, or network-policy issue.
Make one change at a time, then test the same Steam feature again. If you change several settings together, it becomes harder to identify the cause and to restore a safe configuration.

Look for a Steam service outage or maintenance before restarting equipment or editing firewall settings. If Steam is experiencing a service-side problem, changing your router or security settings will not repair it. Steam Support’s Troubleshooting Network Connectivity guidance notes that timeouts when accessing Steam sites can indicate a system-wide issue. Its sign-in guidance also identifies maintenance, local-network trouble, and ISP issues as possible causes of login failures.

As a quick comparison, try opening a Steam website and one other service you know is online. If Steam sites time out while other services load, a broader Steam issue becomes more plausible, though it is not proof: local routing or filtering can also affect Steam specifically. If no sites load reliably, investigate the computer’s internet connection before treating this as a Steam-only fault.
When Steam appears to be under maintenance or experiencing an outage, wait and check again rather than repeatedly resetting local settings. Steam’s sign-in support guidance suggests waiting a few hours when an interruption is a plausible explanation. Once Steam services are available, retry the exact action that failed.
Separate an account or client failure from a game-server failure
If the client cannot sign in
Record the full error wording, whether Steam websites open, and whether other online services work. A sign-in problem can arise from service maintenance, an unstable local connection, an ISP route, or software filtering the connection. The result of the tests below will help narrow these possibilities; an “online” indicator elsewhere in Steam does not rule them out.

If Friends or one Steam feature fails
Test another Steam feature that uses a different service path, such as opening the store or starting a download. A feature-specific failure is useful evidence: it may point to the service or route used by that feature rather than a complete loss of internet access. Avoid resetting the entire network simply because one Steam component is unavailable.
If a game reports “Server Verification Failed”
Try several different servers for the same game. Steam Support says that when only one server fails verification, that game server may be unable to contact Steam Authentication Servers. If multiple servers fail, then check Steam status and connectivity to Friends before concluding the household network is at fault. This comparison distinguishes a single-server issue from a broader Steam or local connection problem.

Test the computer’s connection, Wi-Fi, and router
Restart, then test with Ethernet if practical
- Exit and restart the Steam client, then retry the affected feature.
- Restart the modem and router using their normal power-cycle procedure, wait for the connection to return, and test Steam again.
- If the computer is on Wi-Fi or powerline networking, connect it directly to the router with Ethernet for a comparison. Steam Support recommends testing a direct wired connection, if possible, to determine whether the connection itself is the problem.
A wired test is diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix. If Steam works on Ethernet but not over Wi-Fi or powerline, focus on wireless coverage, interference, or the powerline link. If the same failure occurs over Ethernet, the cause may be elsewhere. Restore your usual connection after the test if you do not intend to keep the wired setup.
Bypass a separate router only when it is safe and practical
If your modem and router are separate devices, Steam’s router guidance suggests temporarily connecting the computer directly to the modem as a diagnostic. Do this only if your setup permits it and you understand how to reconnect your router afterward. If Steam works through the modem but not through the router, the router’s configuration or compatibility becomes a stronger lead. If the problem persists either way, the router is less likely to be the only cause.

Change only one setting per test, keep track of its original value, and restore it if it makes no difference. These settings affect network behavior or security; do not turn off several protections permanently as a general-purpose “Steam fix.”
Steam Deck wireless checks are device-specific
For a Steam Deck, try another available Wi-Fi band—6 GHz, 5 GHz, or 2.4 GHz—and compare the result. A wired test may require USB-C-to-Ethernet hardware. These are Steam Deck-specific diagnostic options; they are not prerequisites for troubleshooting a Windows or Mac computer.
Refresh firewall permissions without leaving protection disabled
A firewall or security product can block Steam even when the rest of the internet works. Steam notes that the firewall may need to authorize Steam again after a first installation or a client update. If the problem began after an update, an old or stale application rule is a useful possibility to check.

- Open your firewall or security application’s allowed-applications or rules list.
- Find stale rules associated with the Steam executables listed in Steam Support’s firewall guidance and remove those rules.
- Restart Steam. When the firewall asks whether Steam may communicate on the network, allow the connection using the firewall’s normal permission prompt.
- Retry sign-in, Friends, the affected game, or the download that originally failed.
The exact screens and rule names vary by firewall product, so use that product’s interface rather than deleting unrelated rules. A brief firewall-off test can help determine whether filtering is involved, but it is only a diagnostic: turn the firewall back on immediately after the comparison. Do not leave it disabled to keep Steam working.
Also consider other security or packet-filtering software and background applications that inspect or restrict network traffic. If the failure disappears only when one product is temporarily bypassed, restore protection and adjust that product’s Steam permission instead of leaving the entire tool off.
Check whether a school, workplace, proxy, or ISP is restricting traffic
Steam says university and business networks, as well as proxies, may block ports needed by Steam. Its documented login and download requirements include the following remote ports:

If Steam fails only on a campus, office, hotel, or other managed connection, ask the network administrator whether Steam traffic is permitted. Steam’s required-ports guidance says these ports cannot be remapped to HTTP or changed to a custom port range, so arbitrary port remapping is not an appropriate workaround. Do not alter shared network settings without authorization.
A problem that appears only at particular hours can point to ISP blocking or traffic shaping. Compare Steam at different times and, if the pattern persists, discuss it with your ISP. A change in time-of-day performance is a clue, not proof of a specific provider policy.

Fix “Slow Downloads and Connection to Content Servers”
Slow Steam downloads do not always mean your internet service is down. A poor content-server region, filtering software, or local installation limits can all affect the experience. Diagnose downloads separately from sign-in and game-server problems.
Compare the download region
- Open Steam’s Settings > Downloads.
- Check the selected download region.
- If performance is poor, try a nearby region and compare the same download under similar conditions.
Steam selects content servers by region. A nearby alternative may improve the route, but no region is guaranteed to be faster in every location or at every time. If changing the region has no effect, restore your preferred setting and continue checking other causes.
Compare like units
Steam may display download speed in bytes per second, while an ISP plan is commonly described in bits per second. One byte is eight bits. To compare a Steam figure reported in bytes per second with a connection rate in bits per second, multiply the Steam figure by eight. For example, 10 megabytes per second corresponds to 80 megabits per second before accounting for protocol overhead and other conditions. A mismatch in units can make a normal download rate look much lower than the plan’s advertised number.
Distinguish network transfer from installation work
On a Steam Deck, installing a game can be CPU- and disk-intensive. An SD card’s write speed may limit total installation time, so the displayed network rate may not reflect the full capacity of the internet connection while Steam is processing or writing downloaded data. This storage caveat is specific to the Steam Deck context; it should not be used to explain a slow transfer on every computer.

Steam identifies third-party security and packet-filtering software as possible causes of incorrect content-server selection or connectivity trouble. Review such software if only downloads are affected, and use the firewall permission procedure above rather than leaving security protections disabled. If other Steam functions and downloads both fail, return to the broader service, network, and port checks.

Handle “SECURE CONNECTION FAILED” by the point of failure
The wording “SECURE CONNECTION FAILED” is not enough on its own to identify a single cause. First note whether it appears during sign-in, while opening a Steam page, during a download, or when connecting to a game. Then check Steam availability and compare Steam with other websites and services. If Steam alone is affected, test Ethernet or another network and review firewall, security, proxy, and managed-network restrictions. If the error is confined to one game server, compare other servers rather than changing system-wide settings.
Do not assume that the error proves your account, computer, or router is damaged. The useful evidence is whether the same action fails across connections, whether other Steam features work, and whether the problem follows one server or network. Keep the exact error text for a support request if the issue continues.
Escalate persistent problems with useful evidence
If the cause remains unclear, test Steam on another network, preferably one using a different provider. A connection through a different network can help distinguish a problem tied to your router or ISP route from one that follows the computer or Steam account. Restore temporary network changes after the test.
Before contacting Steam Support, collect a short, factual record:
- The exact error text and the feature that fails: sign-in, Friends, a named game’s server, or content-server downloads.
- When it happened, including whether the failure is limited to particular hours.
- Whether Steam websites and other online services load.
- Whether several game servers fail or only one.
- Whether the result changes on Ethernet, after a router bypass, or on an alternate network.
Steam’s sign-in flow provides a support-request path. If the issue involves advanced system or local network configuration, Steam’s installation guidance also points to local IT support as an appropriate resource.
Use client-file repair only for the matching error path
Steam’s guide for an unavailable or busy service includes a client-file repair route for that particular error path. It is not the first step for every connection problem. If that is the error you see and basic checks have not helped, follow Steam’s current Windows or Mac instructions carefully before removing or replacing client files.
Steam’s guidance says the Windows route retains steam.exe and steamapps. The Mac route retains steamapps, but Steam warns that mods or other custom content may be lost. Verify which instructions apply to your operating system and preserve the named folders before proceeding; do not apply this repair simply because Steam displays an unrelated network error.
