When Starfield mods stop loading after a game or Creations update, identify the symptom before changing files. A Creations menu that hangs, a load order that will not save, missing in-game content, and a crash after adding mods have different recovery paths.
Start by recording your platform, game version, mod versions, installation method, and current load order. Then update each Creation, remove duplicate filenames, respect Starfield’s ESM–ESL–ESP ordering, and isolate recently added mods one change at a time. Use the platform-specific Creations recovery steps only when the menu itself is the problem; reserve file verification or reinstallation for persistent PC crashes.
Identify the failure before changing anything
Use the first symptom to choose a troubleshooting branch. Do not treat every warning as evidence of a mod conflict.

Official Bethesda guidance establishes these separate paths, but it does not identify every mod that is incompatible with the newest Starfield build. Compatibility still depends on the exact game version, platform, Creation release, dependencies, and installation method.

Record your setup before disabling or deleting anything
Make a short record while the current state is visible. This prevents a failed experiment from becoming an unrecoverable mystery.
- Write down the platform and store or launcher, such as PC, Xbox, or PlayStation.
- Note the installed Starfield version and the date the problem first appeared.
- List every affected Creation or externally installed mod, including its displayed version and the date it was downloaded or updated.
- Mark whether each item came from the in-game Creations menu or from a third-party manager.
- Describe the first symptom precisely: missing objects, a menu hang, a crash during launch, a crash after loading a save, or a load order that cannot be saved.
- Save screenshots or a written copy of the current load order before reordering, disabling, or removing entries.
This is a precaution rather than a guarantee that every platform can restore the same state. On consoles, some recovery actions deliberately remove locally downloaded Creations, so the list is particularly valuable.
Check Creation versions and duplicate filenames
Bring each Creation up to date
Open the Creations list and check for an available update for every item involved in the failure, not only the last one you installed. A game update can leave an older Creation enabled even though the Creation menu still displays it. Read the item’s current requirements and dependency notes as well; an update to a master file or framework may require a matching patch.
If the author has not released a version for your Starfield build, do not assume that changing its position will make it compatible. Keep a note of the old version, disable it for testing, and use the author’s current instructions when a compatible release appears.
Search for duplicate filenames
Bethesda says duplicate filenames can prevent saving a load order and can also prevent Creations from being deleted or disabled. Two entries may have different display names while shipping a file with the same internal name. Check the filename information shown by the Creations interface or manager rather than relying only on the title shown in the library.

When you find duplicates, disable or remove the redundant entry through the same installation route that created it. Do not delete arbitrary files from the game directory while the game or manager is running. If the interface refuses the operation, record both entries, restart the game, and try again after confirming that no manager is applying the order automatically.
Use Starfield’s load-order rules instead of a universal template
Starfield’s official ordering rule is based on file class:

ESM and ESL files cannot simply be dragged below the top groups. If the interface prevents that move, it is enforcing the file-class rule rather than reporting a conflict. Never force an ESP ahead of ESM or ESL files to solve a missing-content problem.
Within a class, follow the mod author’s dependency and patch instructions. A patch normally needs both of the files it patches, but there is no single conflict-free order that applies to every Starfield combination. If two authors provide different instructions, check whether one has published a compatibility patch or updated guidance for your exact game version instead of guessing.
Fix a Creations menu that is stuck loading
Start with the least destructive check
A menu that will not open can be a service or connection problem rather than a bad gameplay mod. Leave it on the loading screen for a few minutes first. If it eventually opens, disable Creations beginning with the items downloaded or updated most recently, then restart the game and test again.

Disable one item at a time when only one or two recent downloads are involved. If many were added together, disable the recent group, restart, and re-enable them later in small batches. The official guidance recommends prioritizing recent Creations, but this isolation method is a cautious diagnostic technique, not a promise that every interaction will be identified.
PC: rebuild the catalog only after preserving it
If the Creations menu cannot be reached on PC, Bethesda’s recovery procedure uses the catalog file in %LocalAppData%Starfield. Before removing anything, make a backup copy of ContentCatalog.txt and note the Creations you have installed. The catalog can help identify a troublesome item; deleting it first removes that reference.
- Exit Starfield completely.
- Open the Windows user-data location represented by
%LocalAppData%Starfield. - Copy
ContentCatalog.txtto a safe folder or rename the copy so it is preserved. - Remove the original
ContentCatalog.txtfrom the Starfield folder. - Start the game and allow it to rebuild access to the Creations menu.
- Re-enable only the Creations you have checked, testing the menu and a save after each small group.
This procedure is specifically for a PC menu/catalog problem. It is not a general fix for a mod that loads but has missing content, and it does not replace checking versions or dependencies.
Xbox: understand what clearing reserved space removes
Bethesda’s Xbox remedy involves clearing the game’s reserved space. That action removes downloaded Creations stored in that local space. Make sure your list and any needed account information are recorded before using it, because you should expect to download the Creations again afterward. Do not use this step merely because one in-game item is missing if the menu itself works.
PlayStation: expect a reinstall-based remedy
Bethesda’s PlayStation instructions involve reinstalling the game. Treat this as a platform recovery operation, not a quick load-order adjustment. Record your installed Creations and saves according to your console’s normal backup options, follow the official reinstall sequence, and allow the game and required Creations to finish installing before testing. Reinstalling can remove local data and takes substantially longer than disabling one item.

Isolate a mod conflict without losing the working state
If the menu works but the game loses content, behaves incorrectly, or fails only with certain files enabled, use controlled isolation. The objective is to discover whether one mod is stale, whether a dependency is absent, or whether two otherwise valid mods interact badly.
- Disable the suspected Creation or the smallest recent group. Leave unrelated, known-working items unchanged.
- Restart Starfield fully. Do not judge a load-order change from a session that has not been restarted.
- Load a test save or begin a controlled test in the area where the problem appears. Record whether the symptom is gone.
- If the problem remains, disable the next smallest group and repeat. If it disappears, split the successful group in half and test again.
- When one item or pair remains, read its current instructions for required masters, patches, optional files, and known incompatibilities.
- Re-enable the confirmed items in small groups, restarting between changes. Stop when the failure returns and record the last change.
Binary-style grouping reduces the number of restarts when many items are involved, while one-at-a-time testing gives the clearest result for a short list. Neither method proves that a mod is universally incompatible; it only shows that the tested combination reproduces the symptom.
Interpret the result correctly
- If one Creation fails alone, check its release notes, dependencies, and compatibility with your current Starfield version.
- If two items fail only when enabled together, look for an official patch or a documented incompatibility before choosing which one to keep.
- If a failure appears only after a save has already been loaded with a mod active, test a clean or earlier save where appropriate. Disabling a mod can itself affect saved content.
- If every Creation fails but the unmodded game works, suspect a broad version or catalog issue rather than one bad entry.
- If the unmodded game also fails, stop changing the load order and move to base-game crash or file-integrity troubleshooting.
Use third-party managers without mixing their rules with Creations rules
Players who install PC mods through Vortex should use the current Starfield extension documentation maintained in the Nexus Mods repository. The extension’s implementation changes over time, so old instructions about deployment, plugins, or load-order behavior should not be treated as universal current rules.
Keep the installation routes distinct while diagnosing. A file managed by Vortex may not behave like an in-game Creation, and disabling an entry in one interface may not remove files deployed by the other. Record which tool owns each item, close the manager while testing the game when its documentation recommends that, and do not apply console reserved-space steps or in-game catalog deletion to a manager-managed installation.

When a manager reports a missing dependency or deployment error, resolve that report in the manager first. When Starfield’s Creations menu is the part that hangs, use the platform-specific Creations procedure instead of assuming the manager is the cause.

Recover from PC crashes after mods were added
A crash during launch or gameplay needs a different response from a menu that merely spins. Bethesda’s PC crash guidance says to remove the added mods, reinstall Starfield, and verify or repair the game files again. Because reinstalling is disruptive, use it after preserving your mod list and testing with the mods removed, unless the game cannot reach a usable state at all.
- Exit the game and remove or disable the added mods using the installation method that installed them.
- Keep your written list of mod versions and dependencies; do not erase it while cleaning the installation.
- Start Starfield without the added mods and test a new session or an appropriate unmodded save.
- If the crash persists, reinstall Starfield through your platform’s launcher.
- Run the launcher’s verify, repair, or equivalent file-integrity operation after installation.
- Launch once with no mods. Only then add current, required files in small groups and restart between groups.
File verification and reinstallation are recovery measures for PC crashes, not guaranteed cures for every silent load failure or conflict. If the unmodded installation is stable but a particular Creation causes a crash, stop reinstalling repeatedly and investigate that Creation’s version, requirements, and compatibility notes.
When the official steps do not identify the cause
Bethesda’s published support pages establish the duplicate-filename behavior, file-class ordering, Creations-menu recovery, and a PC crash path involving mod removal and file verification. They do not publish a canonical order for every mod combination or a current list of all incompatible third-party releases.

For an unresolved case, compare your exact Starfield build and platform with each mod’s current release notes, required masters, and known patches. Include the symptom, reproduction steps, load-order screenshot, installation route, and the result of testing with all Creations disabled when asking the author or community for help. Avoid reporting a user anecdote as a verified fix; a change that helped one load order may not apply to yours.
Keep the working baseline intact. Once the unmodded game or a known-good group is stable, add one documented change at a time and retain the record of what changed. That gives you a reversible path when a future Starfield or Creations update changes compatibility again.
