If Star Fox split-screen is missing or a second player cannot join, first identify the exact game mode. On Nintendo Switch 2, Local Battle, local campaign co-op, online Battle Mode, online GameShare co-op, and local GameShare use different menus and joining methods. The steps below follow Nintendo’s documented setup for the Switch 2 version of Star Fox; older releases, including Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS, do not use the same multiplayer flow.
Start with the mode you actually want, then follow its host and guest steps exactly. If the documented path still fails, Nintendo does not publish one universal cause for every join failure, so record the console, game version, mode, role, error message, and the precise step where joining stops before escalating.
Identify the game, console, and multiplayer mode
“Split-screen” can describe several different Star Fox features. The official instructions covered here are for Star Fox on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s multiplayer support guide separates the following routes:

| Mode | Systems used | What players do | How a player joins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Local Battle | One Switch 2 | Battle on one console, with the selected number of local players and any CPU opponents available in the mode | Pair each controller when the console prompts |
| Local campaign or Challenge co-op | One Switch 2 | One player pilots while the other operates the gun | Select Co-op: Local, then pair the second controller |
| Online Battle | Separate consoles over the internet | Invite a friend to Battle Mode before matchmaking or a private game starts | Accept the notification or use the profile’s Invites list |
| GameShare co-op through GameChat | Separate consoles in a GameChat room | Play Campaign or Challenge co-op; the host pilots and the guest is the gunner | Guest uses See Invites to GameShare, then Join GameShare |
| Local GameShare for Battle Mode | Nearby consoles | Join a host’s local Battle session from another Switch 2 | Choose the GameShare icon on HOME, then Join GameShare and A Local User |
Do not use the local one-console instructions for an online friend, and do not use GameShare instructions for ordinary split-screen. A player can appear unable to join simply because the host and guest are in different flows.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
There are two especially important distinctions. First, Local Battle is one Switch 2 with multiple paired controllers, while Local GameShare uses separate nearby consoles. Second, Campaign and Challenge co-op are role-based: one person pilots and the other operates the gun. They are not a two-ship Battle Mode lobby.
Check these prerequisites before changing settings
- Confirm that both players are using the Switch 2 release covered by Nintendo’s current instructions. The product page identifies the game and its supported multiplayer features: Nintendo’s Star Fox page for Canada.
- For local play, have the required compatible controllers available and pair them only when the game asks. A second controller is relevant to local setup; buying one will not repair an online invitation or a GameShare connection.
- For online features, Nintendo lists internet access, a Nintendo Account, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership as requirements. Regional availability and service terms apply, so verify those conditions for the accounts and region being used.
- Decide whether the host is trying to start a battle, a campaign, or a Challenge session. The menu path and the guest’s join action change with that choice.
- If a feature is absent from the menu, check the game update before attempting to pair controllers or invite anyone.
Write down the intended arrangement before opening the game: one console or two, nearby or online, Battle Mode or Campaign/Challenge, and whether the second person should be a competitor, a co-op gunner, or a GameShare participant. This simple check prevents a common mistake in which a host opens one mode while the guest waits in another.
Fix local split-screen Battle Mode on one Switch 2
Local Battle is the ordinary one-console split-screen route. Nintendo documents support for up to four players on a single system. The host chooses how many people will use that console, and every player pairs a controller before the match begins.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Host procedure
- Start Star Fox and open Battle Mode from the main menu.
- Choose Local Battle.
- Set the number of players who will use the console. Choose the number of people physically playing on that Switch 2, not the number of CPU opponents.
- When prompted, have each person pair a controller. Wait until every intended player is shown as ready.
- Continue to the pilot-selection screen. Each player chooses a pilot, and the host then selects the mission.
When Local Battle or split-screen is missing
Nintendo says Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is supplied through a free game update. Update before diagnosing controllers:
- On the Switch 2 HOME Menu, highlight Star Fox without launching it.
- Press + or − on the controller.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet and let the console complete the update.
- Launch the game again and check Battle Mode for Local Battle.
These update instructions are also listed by Nintendo in its support material. If Local Battle appears after updating, return to the host procedure rather than using GameShare.
Do not assume a missing menu means a controller is defective. Nintendo specifically says the local split-screen feature arrives through a free update, so the update check belongs at the start of this diagnosis. Conversely, if Local Battle is already visible, updating again is not a substitute for selecting the correct player count and pairing every controller.
When the second local player cannot join
At the documented setup, the most useful checks are the player-count and controller screens. Confirm that the host selected at least two local players, then pair the second controller when prompted. If the host moved past the pairing screen with only one controller ready, back out to the local setup and repeat the selection with both controllers available. This is a practical inference from Nintendo’s required flow, not a claim that every failure has the same cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not select online Battle or GameShare when both people are standing at one console. Those options wait for invitations or another system and will not register the second controller as a local split-screen participant.

Local Battle supports up to four players on that single system, so the player-count choice is part of the setup rather than a cosmetic setting. If three or four people are playing, count only the people using that Switch 2; CPU opponents are selected separately where the mode offers them. Have each person remain at the pairing prompt until all intended players are ready, then continue together.
Fix local Campaign or Challenge co-op
Campaign and Challenge co-op is a different local feature from two-ship Battle Mode. The roles are asymmetric: one player pilots and the other operates the gun. If you expect two independent ships or a Battle Mode lobby, you are in the wrong activity.
- From the main menu, open Campaign or Challenge Mode.
- Select Co-op: Local.
- Follow the on-screen controller-pairing prompt for the second player.
- Confirm the pilot and gunner roles when the game presents them, then begin the selected activity.
If the second person is trying to join from a second console, stop this procedure. Local co-op means both participants are using the same Switch 2; a second console requires one of the online or GameShare routes instead.
The role difference also explains why a player may think joining failed when the game is behaving normally. The guest does not become a second pilot in this co-op flow; the guest is the gunner. Choose Battle Mode if the desired experience is a competitive or multi-ship battle rather than shared piloting and gunning.
Fix an online Battle Mode invitation
Online Battle uses an invitation rather than local controller pairing. The host should invite the friend before starting matchmaking or a private game.
Host: send the invitation
- Open Battle Mode.
- Choose Online Battle.
- Select Invite Friends.
- Choose the friend to invite and wait for that player to join.
- Only after the friend has joined should the host start matchmaking or launch the private game.
Guest: accept the invitation
If the invitation notification is visible, select Join. If it was missed, Nintendo’s documented recovery path is:
- Open the HOME Menu.
- Select the guest’s user profile.
- Open Invites.
- Choose the Online Play Invite.
- Select Join, then return to the game if prompted.
A missed notification is therefore not proof that the host failed to send the invitation; check the profile’s invitation list before sending a different type of request.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Timing matters in this flow. The host is instructed to wait for the invited player before starting matchmaking or a private game. Starting first can leave the guest looking for a lobby that is no longer at the invitation stage, so return to Invite Friends and repeat the documented sequence if necessary.

Verify online eligibility
Nintendo states that online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership, subject to regional availability and applicable terms. Check each account and console against those requirements. They are prerequisites, not a guaranteed explanation for a particular connection error.
Do not purchase an extra local controller to solve this type of failure. Online Battle joins through an invitation on separate consoles; it does not use the local controller-pairing screen.
Fix GameShare co-op through GameChat
GameShare co-op is the documented online route for Campaign or Challenge play. It begins in a GameChat room and uses a dedicated GameShare invitation. The host pilots; the guest operates the gun.
Recommended Free Tools
Host steps
- Have both players join the same GameChat room.
- Open Campaign or Challenge Mode.
- Select Co-op: GameShare.
- Choose the player to invite.
- Wait for the guest to accept and join before starting the activity.
Guest steps
- Open the C Menu while in the GameChat session.
- Select See Invites to GameShare.
- Choose the host’s invitation.
- Select Join GameShare.
If the guest is looking in the ordinary profile Invites list, they are checking the wrong acceptance point for this flow. GameShare invitations are handled through the GameChat C Menu path above.
Nintendo identifies a compatible USB camera as necessary for GameChat video features, but video is not listed as a requirement for fixing a player who cannot join. Do not treat a camera as a remedy for an invitation or GameShare error.
Keep this flow separate from online Battle. Both use separate consoles and invitations, but GameShare co-op starts in GameChat, uses Co-op: GameShare, and assigns pilot and gunner roles. If the goal is a Battle Mode match, use Online Battle and the ordinary online-play invitation instead.
Fix local GameShare for Battle Mode
Local GameShare is for nearby consoles, not two players sharing one screen. The host creates a local Battle session; the other player discovers it from the HOME Menu on a separate nearby Switch 2.
Host steps
- Open Battle Mode.
- Highlight GameShare.
- Set GameShare to Local.
- Leave the session waiting while nearby players join.
Joining-player steps
- On the joining console’s HOME Menu, select the GameShare icon.
- Choose Join GameShare.
- Select A Local User.
- Choose the host user.
- Select the nearby session found by the console and join it.
Choosing Local Battle on the guest console will not join a Local GameShare session. Conversely, choosing GameShare is unnecessary when both players are meant to use one console and two paired controllers.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
This route is easy to confuse with ordinary split-screen because both players are nearby. The deciding question is whether they are looking at one screen or using separate Switch 2 systems. One screen means Local Battle and paired controllers; separate nearby systems mean the host sets GameShare to Local and the guest joins from the HOME Menu GameShare icon.
Use the symptom to choose the right correction
| What you see | Check first | Correct route |
|---|---|---|
| There is no Local Battle or split-screen option | Update Star Fox through HOME Menu → highlight the game → +/− → Software Update → Via the Internet | After updating, open Battle Mode → Local Battle |
| The second person is at the same console but is not listed | Confirm the host selected the number of local players and that the second controller was paired at the prompt | Repeat the Local Battle setup |
| The second person expects two ships in Campaign | Campaign and Challenge co-op use pilot and gunner roles | Use Co-op: Local, Co-op: GameShare, or the mode that matches the intended activity |
| An online Battle invitation was not seen | Open the invited user’s HOME Menu profile and check Invites | Select the Online Play Invite, then Join |
| The guest cannot find a GameShare invitation in profile notifications | Check that both players are in GameChat | Open the C Menu → See Invites to GameShare → Join GameShare |
| A nearby second console cannot find the host | Confirm the host selected Battle Mode → GameShare → Local | Guest uses HOME Menu GameShare → Join GameShare → A Local User |
| Online mode will not proceed | Check internet access, Nintendo Account status, Nintendo Switch Online membership, and regional availability | Correct the missing prerequisite, then repeat the documented invitation flow |
Why instructions for older Star Fox games may not work
Star Fox has appeared on several consoles with different multiplayer designs. Nintendo’s Star Fox 64 3D instruction booklet, published for the Nintendo 3DS release in 2012, describes wireless multiplayer for that hardware. It is not a troubleshooting manual for the current Switch 2 version.
Before applying any menu path, check the game’s title screen, console, and edition. A 3DS wireless setup, a legacy virtual-console release, and Switch 2 Local Battle can all be described casually as “Star Fox multiplayer,” but their controller, wireless, and invitation procedures are not interchangeable.
What to record when the documented flow still fails
Nintendo’s support pages provide setup procedures rather than a fault-specific explanation for every player who cannot join. Make the next support conversation useful by recording:
- the exact Star Fox release and console model;
- whether the session is Local Battle, local Campaign or Challenge co-op, online Battle, online GameShare, or local GameShare;
- which console is the host and which player is the guest;
- the game’s installed version or whether the free update has completed;
- the last menu item selected before the failure;
- whether the controller appears during local pairing or the invitation appears for online play;
- the complete wording of any error message; and
- whether the online prerequisites are available for both accounts.
That information distinguishes a missing mode, an unpaired local controller, a missed invitation, a GameChat/GameShare acceptance problem, and an online eligibility issue without assuming that one cause explains all join failures.
A final retry checklist
- Name the setup out loud: one console, nearby consoles, or online consoles.
- Name the activity: Local Battle, Campaign/Challenge co-op, Online Battle, or GameShare.
- For Local Battle, verify the local player count and pair every controller at the prompt.
- For local co-op, select Co-op: Local and expect pilot-and-gunner roles.
- For online Battle, use Invite Friends, then accept through the notification or profile Invites list.
- For GameShare co-op, join GameChat first and accept through C Menu → See Invites to GameShare.
- For local GameShare, have the host choose GameShare → Local and have the guest use the HOME Menu GameShare icon.
- If Local Battle is absent, complete the free software update before repeating setup.
Repeating the correct flow is more useful than switching randomly between menus. If the same step fails after the mode, update, controller, invitation, and account checks are documented, preserve the details for Nintendo support rather than guessing at a single cause.

Why is Local Battle missing from my menu?
Nintendo says Local Split-Screen Battle Mode is available through a free update. Highlight Star Fox on HOME, press + or −, choose Software Update, and select Via the Internet.
Why can’t the second player join split-screen?
Confirm that the host selected at least two local players and that the second controller was paired at the prompt. If the setup moved on too early, return to Local Battle and repeat it with both controllers ready.
Can two players use separate consoles for local co-op?
No. Co-op: Local uses one Switch 2. Separate consoles require online Battle or one of the GameShare routes, depending on whether you want a battle or Campaign/Challenge co-op.

Where does a guest accept a GameShare co-op invitation?
Both players should be in the same GameChat room. The guest opens the C Menu, selects See Invites to GameShare, chooses the invitation, and selects Join GameShare.
Does GameShare require a USB camera?
Nintendo identifies a compatible USB camera for GameChat video features. It is not identified as a requirement or fix for a multiplayer join problem.
What does the host do for nearby Local GameShare?
The host opens Battle Mode, highlights GameShare, sets it to Local, and waits. The joining player uses the HOME Menu GameShare icon, chooses Join GameShare, selects A Local User, chooses the host, and joins the nearby session.
What online requirements should both players check?
Nintendo lists internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership, with regional availability and service terms applying. These are prerequisites, not a guaranteed diagnosis for every connection error.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the mode: pair controllers for Local Battle, use Co-op: Local for one-console campaign play, accept online Battle invites through the profile’s Invites list, accept GameShare through the GameChat C Menu, and use the HOME Menu GameShare icon for nearby consoles. Update Star Fox if Local Battle is missing, and record the exact failure step if the documented flow still does not work.
