SSL certificate errors mean your browser cannot verify that an HTTPS connection is authentic. Start with the device clock and time zone, then finish any Wi‑Fi sign-in, test a private window, update the browser and operating system, and check whether antivirus HTTPS scanning or an enterprise proxy is replacing certificates. If the warning affects only one website, the site owner usually has to repair its certificate or chain. If the host uses HSTS and validation fails, there is normally no safe click-through; the underlying problem must be fixed.

What an SSL certificate error is telling you

HTTPS uses TLS certificates to prove that the server you reached is authorized for the domain in the address bar and to negotiate encrypted traffic. A browser rejects the connection when it cannot establish that chain of trust. The failure may be local (a wrong clock, captive portal, outdated trust store, security software, or proxy) or remote (an expired certificate, hostname mismatch, missing intermediate certificate, or unsupported server configuration).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The warning protects you from sending passwords, payment details, email, or other sensitive data to an impostor. Do not treat “advanced” or “continue anyway” as a routine fix, especially on banking, shopping, work, or email sites.

First, determine whether the problem is local or limited to one site

What you observe Most likely area First safe action
Every HTTPS website fails on one device Clock, operating-system trust store, captive network, security software, proxy, or malware Verify date/time/time zone, try another network, and complete any portal login
Only one domain fails, while other HTTPS sites work That site’s certificate, hostname, chain, or TLS configuration Check the hostname, test from another network, and report it to the site owner
The error appears only on work or school Wi‑Fi Managed TLS inspection or a network policy Contact the administrator; install a trust certificate only through an approved process
The page says HSTS or provides no bypass button A deliberate browser safety restriction Do not force a workaround; fix the certificate or contact the site or network owner

Testing the same URL on another device or network is useful evidence. If it works elsewhere, concentrate on the original device or network. If it fails everywhere, the server is the stronger suspect.

Step 1: Correct the device clock

Certificates have “not before” and “not after” dates. Even a perfectly valid certificate looks expired or not yet valid when the device clock, date, or time zone is wrong. This is a common cause of NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID.

  1. Windows: open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and automatic time-zone detection where available, then use Sync now.
  2. macOS: open System Settings > General > Date & Time and enable automatic date and time.
  3. Android: open Settings > System > Date & time and enable automatic date, time, and time zone.
  4. iPhone or iPad: open Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
  5. Close and reopen the browser, reload the page, and test a second HTTPS site.

If the clock keeps drifting, the device may have a failing real-time-clock battery, disabled time synchronization, or a management policy. Correcting it temporarily will not solve the underlying hardware or policy issue; contact your administrator or service provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 2: Complete a captive Wi‑Fi portal

Cafés, airports, hotels, libraries, and some guest networks require a browser sign-in before allowing normal internet access. Until you accept the terms or enter a room number, the network may redirect HTTPS requests to a login server. That redirect cannot present a certificate for the site you intended to visit, so the browser reports a certificate error.

  1. Disconnect from the Wi‑Fi and reconnect so the network assigns a fresh session.
  2. Open a plain HTTP address such as http://example.com. An HTTP request is intentionally unencrypted and is commonly used to trigger the portal; do not enter passwords on an unfamiliar page.
  3. Complete the network’s sign-in or acceptance page, then close that tab.
  4. Open the original HTTPS site again. If the warning persists, forget the network, reconnect, and repeat the test.

Never provide banking credentials or other sensitive information to a page that appears during a Wi‑Fi login unless you can verify that it belongs to the venue or network operator.

Step 3: Test without extensions and update the software

A private window starts with a cleaner browser state. It can reveal whether an extension, cached session, or local setting is involved; it does not make an invalid certificate safe.

  1. Open Chrome’s Incognito window or Firefox’s New Private Window and visit the site.
  2. If the private test works, disable extensions one at a time in the normal profile, beginning with VPN, filtering, traffic-inspection, or “security” extensions. Re-enable unaffected extensions after identifying the conflict.
  3. Update the browser through its built-in About page, then restart it.
  4. Install pending operating-system updates. Browser trust decisions depend partly on the system’s root-certificate store and TLS libraries.
  5. Clear only the affected site’s cached data if the error follows an old session; do not delete certificates or security settings at random.

Menu names vary by browser release. If a private window shows the same certificate error, the cause is more likely the clock, network, certificate chain, or a system-level interceptor than a normal extension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 4: Check antivirus HTTPS scanning and proxies

Some security products inspect encrypted traffic by acting as a local man-in-the-middle: they create a substitute certificate for each website and sign it with a local root certificate. Corporate gateways can do the same. If the browser does not trust that signing certificate, every intercepted site appears invalid.

Temporary diagnostic test

Use the security product’s settings to pause HTTPS, SSL, or encrypted-traffic scanning briefly, then reload a known-good site. Keep the test short, avoid sensitive activity, and turn protection back on immediately. If the warning disappears only while scanning is disabled, the product or its trust certificate needs repair or an update.

When a company proxy is involved

On a managed device, the approved solution is for the administrator to deploy the organization’s trust certificate through the operating system or browser policy. Ask the help desk which certificate and installation method are authorized. Do not download a certificate from a random website, email attachment, or pop-up: installing an unknown root certificate lets its holder impersonate HTTPS sites.

Enterprise products such as Zscaler, Palo Alto Networks, or Fortinet may be present in a managed environment, but the same rule applies regardless of vendor: the administrator must provide and maintain the trusted certificate and policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 5: Try another network and inspect the certificate

Connect through a mobile hotspot or another trusted network. A successful result elsewhere points to the original Wi‑Fi, DNS filtering, proxy, or captive portal. A failure on multiple independent networks is stronger evidence of a server-side problem or a damaged local trust store.

Use the browser’s warning page or lock/site-information control to open certificate details. Check:

  • The certificate’s subject and Subject Alternative Names include the exact hostname you typed.
  • The validity period includes the current date.
  • The issuer is a certificate authority trusted by the device.
  • The chain contains the required intermediate certificates.

A certificate for www.example.com does not automatically cover every other hostname, such as mail.example.com, unless those names are listed. A spelling mistake, an old bookmark, or a redirect to an unlisted subdomain can therefore trigger a common-name error.

Chrome error codes and the appropriate response

Chrome message What it commonly means What to do
NET::ERR_CERT_DATE_INVALID The device clock is wrong, or the certificate is expired or not yet valid Correct date, time, and time zone; if only one site fails, notify its owner
NET::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID The issuer is not trusted, often because of interception, a self-signed certificate, or a missing chain Check security software and proxy policy; do not install an unknown certificate
ERR_CERT_COMMON_NAME_INVALID The certificate does not cover the hostname in the address bar Recheck the address and report a site configuration error
ERR_CERT_WEAK_SIGNATURE_ALGORITHM The server uses an obsolete or weak signing algorithm The site operator must replace the certificate and update the TLS configuration
ERR_CERTIFICATE_TRANSPARENCY_REQUIRED The certificate does not meet Chrome’s transparency requirements The site operator or certificate authority must correct issuance; local bypasses are unsafe
TLS version or cipher mismatch The server and browser cannot agree on an enabled protocol or cipher The website operator must update server TLS settings; changing random browser flags is not a fix

Chrome’s recommended client checks are the clock, captive-portal sign-in, operating-system updates, Incognito testing, antivirus HTTPS protection, and administrator review for proxy interception.

Firefox errors and what they indicate

Firefox message Likely cause Safe response
SEC_ERROR_UNKNOWN_ISSUER The certificate issuer or chain is not trusted Investigate interception, a missing intermediate, or an untrusted self-signed certificate
MOZILLA_PKIX_ERROR_MITM_DETECTED Firefox detected a possible man-in-the-middle or substituted certificate Check antivirus, proxy, and network policy; involve the administrator on managed devices
Self-signed-certificate error The server presents a certificate it signed itself rather than one anchored in a trusted authority Only the site owner can replace it with a properly trusted certificate; do not add it casually
“Warning: Potential Security Risk Ahead” Firefox could not validate the certificate Read the error code and apply the matching diagnosis; critical or HSTS errors may have no bypass

Firefox’s certificate viewer can show the issuer, dates, subject names, and chain. For a site you own, an incomplete chain—especially a missing intermediate certificate—is a frequent cause of an unknown-issuer failure.

When only one website fails

A single-domain failure is usually not repaired by reinstalling your browser. First compare the hostname in the address bar with the certificate details and test the same URL from another network. Then send the site owner the exact hostname, browser error code, time, and network type. Do not email passwords or private account information with the report.

The owner may need to:

  • Renew an expired certificate and deploy the replacement on every server behind the domain.
  • Add all required hostnames to the certificate’s Subject Alternative Names.
  • Install the complete chain, including the intermediate certificate supplied by the certificate authority.
  • Remove a self-signed or otherwise untrusted certificate from a public service.
  • Replace weak signatures and enable modern TLS versions and cipher suites.
  • Correct load-balancer, CDN, reverse-proxy, or SNI configuration so each hostname receives the right certificate.

If the site is important, wait for the owner to correct it rather than selecting a bypass. A certificate warning on a login page can indicate interception even when the page looks familiar.

Why HSTS removes the “continue” option

HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) tells the browser to use HTTPS and to reject insecure fallback. When certificate validation fails for an HSTS host, browsers generally do not offer a click-through option. This behavior is intentional: allowing a bypass would defeat the site’s request that connections never proceed without valid TLS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no reliable, safe browser setting that repairs a broken HSTS certificate. Correct the clock or local trust problem if the fault is on your device; otherwise contact the site owner or network administrator. Repeatedly deleting browser data, changing flags, or typing a hidden “proceed” URL does not repair the certificate.

Device-wide failures that survive the basic checks

If every HTTPS site still fails after correcting the clock, completing Wi‑Fi authentication, updating software, and testing another network, inspect system-level causes.

  • Trust-store damage: an incomplete or outdated operating-system root store can reject otherwise valid certificates. Install official system updates rather than downloading individual roots from forums.
  • Managed policy: work or school profiles may force a proxy or custom certificate authority. Ask the administrator to verify deployment and expiration.
  • Security software: repair or update the HTTPS-inspection component, then re-enable protection after testing.
  • Unexpected interception: if no legitimate security or management software explains the behavior, disconnect from sensitive services and run a current, reputable malware scan.
  • DNS or router manipulation: compare results on a trusted hotspot and review unfamiliar proxy, VPN, or router settings.

Do not “solve” a device-wide error by permanently disabling antivirus, turning off certificate validation, or adding broad untrusted root certificates. Those changes trade a visible warning for silent interception.

A concise recovery checklist

  1. Read the exact error code and note whether one site or all HTTPS sites are affected.
  2. Set the correct date, time, and time zone; synchronize the clock.
  3. On public Wi‑Fi, open an HTTP page and finish the captive-portal login.
  4. Retry in a private window, then disable suspect extensions.
  5. Update the browser and operating system and restart.
  6. Test through another trusted network.
  7. Temporarily test with antivirus HTTPS scanning paused, then restore it.
  8. For a managed connection, ask the administrator about TLS inspection and the approved trust certificate.
  9. For a single-site error, send the owner the hostname and code; do not bypass it.
  10. If HSTS blocks the page, stop looking for a click-through and wait for the local or server-side fix.

What not to do

  • Do not install a certificate offered by an unknown website, pop-up, or stranger.
  • Do not enter credentials on a captive-portal page you cannot authenticate as legitimate.
  • Do not use a bypass for banking, email, administration, or other sensitive services.
  • Do not assume an error on one domain proves your entire browser is broken.
  • Do not change TLS flags or force obsolete protocols to make a page load.

Official guidance in plain language

Google Chrome Help warns that installing a certificate yourself is usually a security risk. Mozilla Support explains that Firefox stops the connection when a certificate cannot be validated. MDN’s HSTS reference notes that an invalid certificate on an HSTS host does not come with a user click-through option.

Those safeguards are why the correct fix is diagnosis—clock, network, trust store, interception, or server configuration—not suppressing the warning.
