Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
A timeout means your SSH client received no TCP response from the selected IP address and port. Start by confirming that the VPS is running and still has that address, then test the route, check the provider firewall and guest firewall, verify that sshd is listening on the same port you are using, and switch to a serial, browser, rescue, or cloud-shell console if network SSH is unavailable.
What “SSH connection timed out” means
Typical messages include ssh: connect to host 203.0.113.10 port 22: Connection timed out and port 22: Connection timed out. The client sent a TCP connection attempt but did not receive a response from that host and port. Oracle describes the condition this way: “The error means SSH can’t connect to the host at the IP address specified.” Its troubleshooting page was updated May 16, 2026.

An explicit rejection more often produces Connection refused, which usually means the host was reachable but nothing accepted the connection on that port, or a device actively rejected it. The distinction is useful, but both symptoms still require checking the server and every filtering layer.
| Message | What the client learned | First investigation |
|---|---|---|
Connection timed out |
No TCP response arrived from the selected host and port. | Target status, route, provider firewall, guest firewall, and listening port. |
Connection refused |
The host responded with an explicit refusal. | Whether sshd is running and listening on the requested port. |
Do not assume a timeout proves that the IP is wrong. A VM that is still booting, a stopped or unhealthy instance, a failed route, a firewall drop, or a broken SSH daemon can all look similar from the client.

1. Confirm that the VPS and public IP are usable
Check power, boot state, and health
Open the provider dashboard and verify that the instance is powered on, has completed booting, and reports a healthy status. Google Cloud lists an instance that has not finished booting as a timeout cause. Check the provider status page as well; a regional networking incident can affect otherwise correct settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerify the address you are targeting
Confirm that the VPS still owns the public IPv4 or IPv6 address in your SSH command. Recreated instances, detached addresses, and address changes can leave an old command pointing at the wrong machine. If the provider shows both address families, use the one that your client and network can reach, and make sure the firewall rules cover that family.
Check the port before changing anything
Port 22 is conventional, not mandatory. If the administrator changed the daemon to a custom port, the command must include it, for example:
ssh -p 2222 user@203.0.113.10
Google Cloud’s guidance specifically calls out custom SSH ports and the need for a matching firewall rule. A correct IP with the wrong port still produces a timeout when that port is silently dropped.
2. Test from the client side
Run verbose SSH output
Use the intended port and maximum built-in verbosity:
ssh -vvv -p PORT user@IP
Replace PORT and IP with the actual values. The output helps show whether the failure occurs before TCP connection establishment, during host-key negotiation, or during authentication. A timeout during the initial connection points to reachability or filtering rather than a bad password or key.
Rule out the local network
Try the same command from a second network, such as a phone hotspot, office connection, or provider cloud shell. Oracle recommends checking general internet access and proxy restrictions. If one network works and another times out, investigate the failing network’s egress policy, proxy, VPN, or IPv6 path instead of changing the VPS first.
Separate connectivity recovery from redeployment
DigitalOcean’s troubleshooting guidance recommends deciding whether the situation is a connectivity problem that can be repaired or an instance that should be recovered or redeployed. Do not redeploy merely because SSH is unavailable: first preserve data and use an alternate console when one is available.

3. Check provider-side firewalls and security groups
Most VPS platforms can drop traffic before it reaches the guest operating system. Review every control attached to the instance, including:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Security groups or instance firewall rules.
- VPC or cloud-firewall ingress rules.
- Network ACLs and subnet-level filters.
- The provider’s default SSH rule.
Permit TCP from the required source range to the actual SSH port. For temporary diagnosis, a narrowly controlled rule for your current public IP is safer than opening SSH to the entire internet; remove or tighten any temporary rule after testing.
Google Cloud documents checking firewall rules and the default SSH rule. If sshd uses a custom port, add a corresponding custom rule; allowing TCP 22 does not allow TCP 2222. Apply the same logic to IPv6: an IPv4 rule does not automatically permit IPv6 traffic.
Do not confuse provider and guest firewalls
A provider rule can allow traffic while UFW, iptables, or firewalld inside Linux drops it. The reverse is also true. You need a permitted path at both layers before the packet can reach a listening SSH socket.
4. Inspect the Linux firewall from an existing session or console
Use an existing shell, the provider’s browser or serial console, or a rescue environment. Keep that access open while editing rules.
UFW on Ubuntu and other Debian-based systems
Ubuntu describes UFW as a user-friendly interface built on iptables. Inspect the active policy:
sudo ufw status verbose
If SSH is on the standard port, allow it before enabling or reloading UFW:
sudo ufw allow 22/tcp
For a custom port, allow that port instead:
sudo ufw allow 2222/tcp
Use the exact port configured in sshd. Enabling UFW before an SSH rule exists can immediately cut off your remote session, which is why console access and rule ordering matter.

sudo iptables -L -n -v
Look for an INPUT rule that accepts TCP on the configured SSH port and for an earlier DROP or REJECT rule that matches your source. A rule that appears correct but is never reached because of ordering will not permit the connection.
firewalld
On systems using firewalld, inspect the active zone and services:
sudo firewall-cmd --list-all
Confirm that the SSH service or the custom TCP port is allowed in the zone attached to the network interface. Provider and guest rules must agree on the same port.
Recovering from a firewall lockout
If the timeout began immediately after enabling or reloading a firewall, use the provider console rather than repeatedly retrying SSH. Restore the previous rule set or add the correct port, then test from a separate terminal before closing the console session.
5. Verify sshd configuration, service state, and listening socket
Validate configuration before restarting
Use the console or rescue shell to check syntax:
sudo sshd -t
No output normally indicates that the syntax check passed. If it reports an error, correct that configuration first. Restarting a daemon with an invalid configuration can turn a recoverable change into a full SSH outage.
Check the service
Service names vary by distribution. Try the one used by your system:
sudo systemctl status ssh
sudo systemctl status sshd
Google Cloud notes that the OpenSSH daemon may be stopped or configured improperly. AWS documentation likewise recommends restarting sshd and checking that port 22 is listening. Restart only after correcting any reported configuration or dependency failure.
sudo systemctl restart ssh
sudo systemctl restart sshd
Confirm the actual listener
Inspect listening TCP sockets:
sudo ss -ltnp | grep -E '(:22|ssh)'
For a custom port, replace the expression with that port, for example grep ':2222'. Confirm whether the daemon listens on IPv4, IPv6, or both. A service bound only to a private address will not accept connections arriving on the public interface.

6. Use out-of-band access when network SSH is unavailable
When ordinary SSH cannot reach the machine, use a path that does not depend on the same network rule:
- Provider serial console.
- Browser-based console.
- Rescue mode or recovery environment.
- Provider cloud shell.
- Attached-disk recovery on another instance.
Google Cloud recommends investigating sshd problems through the serial console. Oracle documents alternate access and Cloud Shell options. These methods let you inspect firewall rules, repair configuration, review boot errors, and restart services without opening port 22 to everyone.
Serial hardware caveat
A physical USB-to-serial console adapter cable is useful only for a host that exposes a compatible serial interface and has the required electrical and pinout support. A cloud provider’s browser serial console does not require a cable; do not buy hardware expecting it to connect to a generic virtual machine.
Rescue and attached-disk recovery
If the operating system will not boot, attach its boot disk to a recovery environment when the provider supports that workflow. Mount the filesystem, correct the SSH or firewall configuration, inspect logs, and detach it cleanly before booting the original instance. Preserve a snapshot first when the platform offers one.
7. Recognize infrastructure failures that firewall changes cannot fix
If the address, provider rules, guest firewall, service, and listener are all correct, investigate deeper failures:
- A provider or regional network incident.
- A failed route or broken virtual network attachment.
- A kernel panic after an upgrade.
- A full disk preventing services from starting or logs from being written.
- A stopped or unhealthy VM.
Google Cloud documents kernel-failure recovery by reverting or repairing the boot disk. Check console output and provider health diagnostics before making destructive changes. If the instance cannot be restored, follow DigitalOcean’s decision point: recover the data you need, then redeploy from a known-good image or snapshot when that is safer than continued repair.

Port, address-family, and rule-order pitfalls
Many outages survive an initial review because an administrator checks only one setting. A rule permitting TCP 22 does nothing for a daemon configured on 2222. Likewise, an IPv4 ingress rule cannot be used to infer that IPv6 is permitted. Check the address family selected by the client, the address on which sshd is bound, and the matching provider and guest rules.
Rule order matters inside Linux firewalls. An early DROP or REJECT can match before a later ACCEPT rule, and a rule in the wrong firewalld zone can be irrelevant to the interface carrying the traffic. Record the interface, zone, source range, protocol, and destination port when reviewing rules instead of relying on a rule name alone.
A timeout that starts immediately after a firewall reload is a strong reason to use the console. Keep one console session active, make the smallest change possible, and verify a new SSH session before ending the recovery session.

Choosing a VPS with recovery in mind
SSH reliability depends partly on the controls available when it fails. Compare providers on more than price or CPU specifications:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Capability | Why it matters during a timeout |
|---|---|
| Clear security groups and cloud-firewall rules | You can see exactly which source ranges and ports are permitted before packets reach Linux. |
| Browser or serial console | You can repair UFW, firewalld, or sshd without relying on the broken network path. |
| Rescue mode and boot-disk inspection | A failed boot, kernel panic, or full disk can be repaired from another environment. |
| Custom-port and IPv6 support | The platform can represent the actual listener and address family instead of forcing a default rule. |
| Snapshots and redeployment controls | You can preserve data and return to a known-good image when repair is riskier. |
Before placing a production workload, confirm where these controls are located, who can access them, and whether they work while the guest operating system is unhealthy. A documented recovery path is more valuable than a firewall setting that is easy to create but impossible to reach after a lockout.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Opening SSH to the entire internet as the first diagnostic step instead of allowing only the required source range.
- Enabling or reloading UFW before permitting the active SSH port.
- Restarting
sshdwithout runningsshd -tfirst. - Changing several provider and guest rules at once, which makes the successful fix impossible to identify.
- Assuming that a browser console requires a physical serial cable.
- Redeploying before preserving data or trying the provider’s rescue and attached-disk options.
Common scenarios and the shortest safe fix
| What changed | Likely cause | Safe response |
|---|---|---|
| Timeout began after enabling UFW | The guest firewall has no allow rule for the SSH port. | Use a provider console, run sudo ufw status verbose, allow the exact port, then retest. |
| SSH was moved from 22 to another port | The client, provider firewall, guest firewall, and listener are using different ports. | Align all four settings and connect with ssh -p PORT. |
| Only one Wi-Fi or office network fails | That network, proxy, VPN, or address family is blocking the path. | Test from a second network or cloud shell and troubleshoot the failing egress path. |
| VM was recently recreated | The command uses an old public IP. | Copy the current address from the provider dashboard and verify ownership. |
| Console shows boot errors | Kernel, disk, or service failure prevents normal startup. | Use rescue or attached-disk recovery; snapshot data before repair or redeployment. |
Prevent the next lockout
- Keep a working browser, serial, rescue, or cloud-shell access method for every production VPS.
- Record the current SSH port and the provider and guest rules that permit it.
- Before enabling or reloading a firewall, open the SSH rule and keep the console session active.
- Test custom ports from the same networks your administrators use.
- Maintain snapshots and a documented redeployment path.
- When choosing a VPS, compare the clarity of firewall and security-group controls, the availability of browser or serial recovery, boot-disk repair options, support for custom ports and IPv6, and snapshot controls.
Final checklist
- Is the VPS powered on, finished booting, healthy, and still assigned the target public IP?
- Are you using the correct IPv4 or IPv6 address and SSH port?
- Does
ssh -vvv -p PORT user@IPfail from more than one network? - Does the provider firewall allow TCP from your source to that port?
- Does UFW, iptables, or firewalld allow the same port inside Linux?
- Does
sudo sshd -tpass? - Is the correct
sshorsshdservice active? - Does
sudo ss -ltnpshow a listener on the public interface and intended port? - If not, can a serial, browser, rescue, or cloud-shell console restore access?
Following that order identifies most timeout causes without guessing. It also keeps recovery focused: repair the network path when packets are being dropped, repair the guest when the daemon or firewall is wrong, and preserve or recover the disk when the VM itself is unhealthy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does SSH time out while the VPS dashboard says it is running?
A running status does not prove that boot has finished, that the public IP is current, that a route exists, or that a firewall and sshd are working. Verify health and boot completion, confirm the address and port, then inspect provider and guest firewall rules and the listening socket.
What should I check first when SSH stopped working after enabling UFW?
Use the provider’s browser or serial console, or another existing session. Run sudo ufw status verbose and allow the exact SSH port before reloading UFW. Keep the console open and test a new SSH session before closing it.
Does allowing port 22 permit a custom SSH port such as 2222?
No. The client command, provider firewall, guest firewall, and sshd listener must all use the same port. Add a TCP rule for 2222 at every layer and connect with ssh -p 2222.
Should I restart sshd when the connection times out?
Only after checking configuration with sudo sshd -t and reviewing service status. A syntax error can make an outage worse. If validation passes, restart the distribution’s active ssh or sshd service and confirm the socket with sudo ss -ltnp.
Can a physical USB-to-serial cable fix SSH access to a cloud VPS?
Only if the host exposes a compatible physical serial interface with the required electrical and pinout support. A provider browser-based serial console is virtual and needs no cable. Use the provider console, rescue mode, cloud shell, or attached-disk recovery instead.
When should I redeploy the VPS instead of continuing repairs?
First preserve needed data and use an alternate console or recovery environment. If firewall, address, route, sshd, and listener checks are clean but the VM has a kernel failure, full disk, failed boot, or unhealthy state that cannot be restored, recover from a snapshot or backup and redeploy from a known-good image.
