When Squid will not start, do not begin by repeatedly running systemctl restart squid. Capture the first error, validate the configuration, initialize the configured cache directories, then check filesystem permissions, SELinux policy, and listener-port conflicts. On a healthy foreground start, Squid prints “Ready to serve requests.” That sequence isolates whether the failure is in configuration, storage, logging, security policy, or systemd itself.
Start with the first error, not the service status summary
A systemd message such as “控制 process exited with status 1” only says that Squid stopped. The useful explanation is usually in one of three places: the configuration parser, the boot journal, or Squid’s configured cache log. Collect all three before changing files.

cache_logdirective in the activesquid.conf, then inspect that file. A common default is/var/log/squid/cache.log:sudo tail -n 100 /var/log/squid/cache.log
Look for the earliest specific message, such as a syntax error, an inaccessible cache_dir, “Permission denied,” an SELinux AVC denial, or “Address already in use.” Later systemd failures are often just consequences of that first problem.

Validate squid.conf before restarting
Squid can refuse to launch because of a misspelled directive, a broken include file, a helper path that does not exist, or a directive unsupported by the installed version. Parse the complete configuration without starting the daemon:
sudo squid -k parse
If the configuration is not in the compiled-in location, specify it explicitly:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo squid -k parse -f /path/to/squid.conf
Correct every reported error, then run the command again. The parser may report multiple problems, so do not stop after fixing only the first line. A successful parse does not prove that directories, log files, ports, or security labels are usable; it only establishes that Squid can understand the configuration.
Common parser failures
- Unknown or obsolete directive: Check that the directive exists in the version installed on this host. Remove or replace settings copied from a different Squid release.
- Include-file error: Verify the path, spelling, and read permission of every file referenced by
include. A glob that matches nothing can also be a problem on some packaging layouts. - Helper executable error: Confirm that the helper exists at the configured path and that its interpreter and shared libraries are available.
- Unreadable configuration: Check the file and every parent directory. The account that launches Squid must be able to traverse the path, even when the file itself appears readable.
Do not proceed to cache initialization while squid -k parse still reports an error. A failed parse is a configuration failure, not a cache problem.
Understand why a cache initialization error stops systemd
The upstream systemd unit runs a cache initialization command before launching the daemon. Its ExecStartPre invokes squid --foreground -z. Therefore, a failure that mentions ExecStartPre or -z prevents the main Squid process from starting at all.
Run initialization yourself after the configuration parses:
sudo squid -z
If a non-default configuration is used, pass it in the same way as the parser:
sudo squid -z -f /path/to/squid.conf
Squid creates missing cache structures for the paths specified by each cache_dir. It must be able to reach the directory through every parent component and write the required files as its effective runtime user.

Inspect every cache_dir path
First list the configured paths:
grep -n '^[[:space:]]*cache_dir' /etc/squid/squid.conf
Then inspect each directory and its parents. Replace the example path with the actual value from your configuration:
sudo ls -ld /var/spool/squid /var/spool /var
For nested storage, inspect every component:
sudo namei -l /var/spool/squid
The Squid user varies by distribution and package. Discover the configured account rather than assuming a name:
getent passwd squid proxy
On one distribution the daemon may run as squid; on another it may use proxy. Confirm the account in the service definition and package configuration:
systemctl cat squid
Repair ownership with the account used by that installation. For example, if the service runs as squid:
sudo chown -R squid:squid /var/spool/squid
Use the equivalent owner and group when your service specifies a different account. Set directory modes that allow the daemon to read, write, and traverse the cache while preventing unnecessary access by other users. Avoid blindly applying a recursive mode change to the whole filesystem.
Existing cache data and the limits of -z
squid -z creates missing swap structures; it is not a general integrity checker for structures that already exist. If initialization reports damaged or inconsistent existing storage, preserve any data needed for investigation, stop the service, and follow your distribution’s documented cache-rebuild procedure. Treat deletion of cache directories as a destructive action: cached objects are disposable, but an indiscriminate command can remove logs or unrelated files if the path is wrong.

- an owner or group that does not match the Squid runtime account;
- a directory without execute (search) permission for that account;
- a log file marked read-only when Squid needs to append;
- a parent directory mounted read-only or full;
- a path created manually under a different security context.
After correcting ownership and ordinary Unix modes, retry the smallest affected operation. For example, run squid -z for cache storage and then the foreground diagnostic for logging and binding. This avoids changing unrelated paths while troubleshooting.
When “cache.log: Permission denied” is actually SELinux
On Red Hat-family systems, SELinux can deny access even when ls -l shows apparently correct Unix permissions. A wrong SELinux context on /var/log/squid/cache.log or its directory is a documented cause of startup failure.
Check for recent denials:
sudo ausearch -m AVC -ts recent
Also inspect the current labels:
ls -Zd /var/log/squid /var/log/squid/cache.log
Use the distribution’s labeling tools to restore the expected context. Where the file-context rules are already installed, the usual repair is:
sudo restorecon -Rv /var/log/squid
If the path is custom, install an appropriate persistent file-context rule before running restorecon; do not silence the denial by disabling SELinux. A label repair is safer and survives a relabel or reboot when the file-context mapping is correctly defined.
Check SELinux before changing the listener port
Squid commonly listens on TCP port 3128, but an administrator may configure another http_port. On Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the SELinux policy permits specific Squid ports. If the configuration listens on a port outside the policy, SELinux can deny the bind operation even though the port is unused.
Find the configured listener:
grep -n '^[[:space:]]*http_port' /etc/squid/squid.conf
Review the policy’s currently allowed Squid ports:
Recommended Free Tools
sudo semanage port -l | grep -i squid
Add the required port using the type shown by your policy. For example, if the policy uses squid_port_t and the chosen listener is TCP 8080:
sudo semanage port -a -t squid_port_t -p tcp 8080
If that port is already defined and you need to modify its assignment, use -m instead of -a. The exact type and existing assignments should come from the installed policy; verify them before running the command. The semanage utility is provided by the SELinux management package on many distributions.

Read the AVC record before making policy changes. A denial may identify a typo, an unexpected executable, or a different port than the one you intended. Adding a port to policy is appropriate only when Squid is supposed to listen there; it is not a substitute for finding a conflicting process.
Rule out a port conflict independently of SELinux
“Address already in use” means another process has claimed the socket, or a second Squid instance is still running. Identify the owner:
sudo ss -ltnp | grep -E ':(3128|8080)b'
Use the actual configured port in place of the examples. If another service owns it, either stop or reconfigure that service or choose an intentional unused port and update the proxy clients. If an old Squid process owns the port, inspect it before killing anything:
pgrep -a squid
sudo systemctl status squid --no-pager
Do not run a second manually started daemon while systemd is managing the service. Stop the managed unit first, then use foreground mode for diagnosis.
Run Squid in the foreground for decisive diagnostics
Foreground mode bypasses systemd’s abbreviated failure message and prints startup diagnostics directly:
sudo squid -NCd1
The options mean no daemonization, check/diagnostic behavior, and debug level 1. Keep the terminal open and read the first fatal message. A successful startup reaches:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReady to serve requests.
That line confirms that Squid has parsed the configuration, opened its required files, initialized the cache as needed, passed the security checks that apply to the process, and bound its listener. It does not prove that clients have the right ACLs or that upstream internet access works; those are post-start connectivity issues.
Interpret an immediate foreground exit
| What you see | Most likely layer | Next action |
|---|---|---|
squid -k parse reports an error |
Configuration, include file, helper path, or incompatible directive | Fix the exact line or path, rerun the parser, then continue. |
ExecStartPre or -z fails |
Missing cache directory, wrong owner or mode, inaccessible parent, or cache initialization issue | Inspect every cache_dir, repair access, and rerun squid -z. |
cache.log: Permission denied |
Unix permissions or an incorrect SELinux label | Correct ownership and modes, inspect AVC records, and restore the expected context. |
| SELinux reports a bind denial | Listener port is not allowed for the Squid SELinux domain | Add the intended port with semanage port according to the installed policy. |
Address already in use |
Another process or Squid instance owns the listener | Identify it with ss, then stop or reconfigure the conflicting process. |
| The process exits with no obvious message | Fatal configuration, missing helper or library, unreadable file, or a path-specific failure | Compare the foreground output with the journal and configured cache log; do not infer the cause from the exit code alone. |
Restart under systemd only after foreground startup is clean
Once the foreground command reaches “Ready to serve requests,” stop that diagnostic process if it is still running and let systemd manage Squid:

Restart the unit:
sudo systemctl restart squid -
Confirm that systemd considers it active:
systemctl is-active squid -
Review the complete unit status:
sudo systemctl status squid --no-pager -
Check the latest journal entries:
sudo journalctl -u squid -b --no-pager
The upstream unit is Type=notify and starts Squid in the foreground, allowing systemd to track readiness rather than merely the existence of a background process. If systemd still reports failure after a clean manual run, compare the command lines and environment in systemctl cat squid with the command you tested. The unit may specify a different configuration file, user, working directory, or security restriction.
Distribution-specific checks
Debian and Ubuntu
Package layouts commonly use a service account named proxy and place configuration under /etc/squid/, but verify the installed unit instead of assuming. Focus on the actual cache_dir, cache_log, and http_port values in your file. If you move storage or logs outside package defaults, inspect parent-directory traversal permissions and any AppArmor or other mandatory-access-control profile enabled on the host.
Red Hat, Rocky, AlmaLinux, and Fedora
SELinux is frequently enforcing by default. Treat an AVC denial as a primary diagnostic, not as noise. Non-default listener ports may require a persistent semanage port entry, and custom log or cache locations may require a matching file-context rule. Keep SELinux enforcing while you correct labels and policy; temporarily disabling it can hide the real configuration error and create a second problem when enforcement is restored.
Safe recovery checklist
- Record the first message from
systemctl status, the boot journal, and the configured cache log. - Run
squid -k parsewith the same configuration file used by the service. - List every
cache_dirand verify existence, free space, ownership, mode, and parent traversal. - Run
squid -z; remember that it creates missing structures but does not validate existing corruption. - Inspect log paths and correct Unix ownership and permissions for the effective Squid user.
- On SELinux systems, inspect AVC records and labels; use persistent labeling tools rather than disabling enforcement.
- Confirm that each non-default listener port is allowed by the installed SELinux policy.
- Use
ssto rule out another process using the listener. - Run
squid -NCd1and continue only when it prints “Ready to serve requests.” - Restart through systemd and verify both
is-activeand the journal.
When to rebuild cache storage
Cache rebuilding is the highest-risk remedy in this sequence and should not be the first response to a generic startup failure. Permission, label, path, and parser errors are safer to correct in place. Consider a documented rebuild only when Squid’s diagnostics identify damaged existing swap structures and ordinary initialization cannot recover them.
Before removing anything, stop Squid, preserve the relevant configuration and logs, confirm the exact directory named by cache_dir, and ensure that no non-cache data is stored there. A rebuild removes cached objects and can take significant time on large disks. Afterward, recreate the structures with squid -z, verify ownership and labels, run the foreground test, and then return control to systemd.
What a successful repair looks like
The repair is complete when the active configuration parses without errors, cache initialization succeeds, Squid can open its logs and storage under its configured runtime identity, SELinux permits the intended paths and listener, no other process owns the port, foreground mode reaches “Ready to serve requests,” and systemd reports the unit active after a restart. If clients still cannot browse afterward, the startup problem is solved; investigate ACLs, DNS, routing, TLS interception, or upstream connectivity as a separate proxy-function issue.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does systemctl start squid fail even though squid -k parse succeeds?
Parsing checks syntax only. The systemd unit may still fail during its ExecStartPre cache initialization, while opening logs, applying SELinux policy, creating a PID file, or binding the configured port.
Can I delete the Squid cache directory to fix startup?
Only after confirming that the diagnostic identifies damaged cache structures, stopping Squid, preserving needed logs, and verifying the exact path. Deleting cache storage is destructive and does not fix configuration, ownership, label, or port errors.
