There is no confirmed, universal Squadron 42 crash or stutter fix in the official material currently available. The safest approach is to work from the outside in: verify that your PC meets RSI’s published CIG-game requirements, identify whether the failure is in the launcher or the game, apply low-risk Windows, driver, and installation checks, then send reproducible problems to RSI with useful system evidence. RSI’s requirements page was updated on December 17, 2025 and explicitly includes Squadron 42, but it presents requirements for CIG games generally rather than a separate Squadron 42 benchmark or defect-specific remedy.
Start by identifying exactly what fails
“Squadron 42 is crashing” can describe several different failures. The next step depends on where the failure occurs, so write down the symptom before changing anything.

Capture the exact wording of any error instead of paraphrasing it. Also note your Windows edition, processor, graphics card, installed RAM, GPU memory, storage drive, free space, and driver version. A problem that appears only after a driver or game update is different from one that has always occurred.

Make a simple timeline before troubleshooting: when the issue first appeared, whether it followed a Windows, driver, launcher, or game update, and whether a restart changes the result. If another person can reproduce the same failure on demand, record the shortest sequence of steps that triggers it. That sequence is often more useful to support than a general statement that the game is unstable.

Check RSI’s published PC requirements
RSI’s requirements article, updated December 17, 2025, says its CIG-game requirements include Squadron 42. Treat these as compatibility thresholds, not guaranteed frame-rate targets.

Meeting the table does not prove that a crash is caused by something else, and falling short does not identify the precise cause. It tells you whether the machine is inside the published support envelope. A processor can have four or more cores and still fail the AVX, AVX2, or FMA3 requirement.
The 4GB graphics figure is graphics memory, not the amount of ordinary system RAM. Likewise, 16GB is installed system memory, not free memory shown at one moment in Task Manager. Check the component specifications and the Windows-detected values separately. If a specification is unclear, save the DXDiag or System Information report rather than guessing from a product family name.

RSI’s storage guidance contains several separate conditions. It calls for a 150GB-or-larger SSD for CIG games including Squadron 42. It also recommends an NTFS-formatted drive with at least 100GB free for the RSI Launcher and Star Citizen installation, plus another 10GB of SSD space for the pagefile.
That recommendation refers to the launcher and Star Citizen installation; it does not establish a separate Squadron 42 installation-size estimate. Do not treat the 100GB figure as the game’s total required capacity or assume that a nearly full drive is equivalent to a healthy installation.
- Open File Explorer, right-click the installation drive, select Properties, and confirm that the file system is NTFS.
- Check free space on the drive containing the launcher, game files, and Windows pagefile. Leave room for updates and temporary files rather than filling the drive to its limit.
- If the game is on a hard disk rather than an SSD, compare that setup with RSI’s stated SSD requirement before diagnosing stutter as a graphics problem.
- Do not reformat a drive simply as a troubleshooting experiment. Reformatting can destroy data and does not establish that a particular crash is storage-related.
Check the correct volume if the launcher and game are installed on different drives. A drive can satisfy the capacity requirement while the Windows pagefile remains on another drive with little free space. Record both locations and their free capacity when you contact support. Do not infer a separate installation-size number for Squadron 42 from the launcher and Star Citizen recommendation.
Use Windows tools to document your hardware
RSI points readers to Windows’ DXDiag and System Information tools for inspecting PC specifications. These reports make support requests more useful because they show the configuration instead of relying on memory.

DXDiag
- Press
Win + R, typedxdiag, and press Enter. - On the System tab, note Windows version, processor, memory, and DirectX version.
- On each Display tab, note the GPU name, driver date, and display-memory information.
- Use Save All Information if RSI support or an Issue Council report asks for a text copy.
System Information
- Press
Win + R, typemsinfo32, and press Enter. - Review System Summary for the operating system, processor, BIOS mode, and installed physical memory.
- Expand Components > Display for graphics-adapter details.
These tools report what Windows detects; they do not certify that a component is stable under load. Record the information alongside the exact failure and the date it began.
If the PC has more than one display adapter, record each Display tab rather than reporting only the integrated device. Note which adapter the game is intended to use, but do not make firmware or BIOS changes solely to force a selection. Support can use the complete report to distinguish a configuration issue from a game-side failure.
Work through launch failures in a safe order
1. Install current Windows updates
Steam’s general PC launch guidance recommends updating Windows. Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, restart, and test again. This is general Steam advice, not a Squadron 42-specific fix validated by RSI.
2. Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer
Use the normal driver-update path for your graphics hardware, restart Windows, and retest. Note the previous and new driver versions so you can report whether the change affected the problem. Avoid installing unrelated system-cleaning utilities as part of this step.
3. Close non-essential software temporarily
Steam’s general guidance suggests disabling non-essential software to check for conflicts. Close overlays, recording tools, performance monitors, RGB controllers, and other applications one at a time, then attempt the same launch. A clean test is more informative than permanently disabling every background service.
4. Verify files when your installation platform supports it
If you launch through Steam, use Steam’s official Verify integrity of game files process for the relevant game entry. This is a general Steam recovery step for games that do not run after launch; the available official material does not establish it as a Squadron 42-specific repair. If you use another installation route, follow that platform’s own verification instructions rather than applying Steam steps to it.
5. Re-test without changing several variables at once
After each change, reproduce the same failure and record the result. If updating Windows, changing drivers, closing software, and moving files all happen together, you will not know which change mattered. If the launcher still fails, preserve the exact error and proceed to RSI support instead of repeatedly reinstalling without evidence.

A file-verification result is evidence, not a diagnosis. If files are replaced, record that fact and whether the same error returns. If verification reports no problem, do not assume the launcher, Windows, storage, or hardware has been cleared; move to the next controlled check.
When the game crashes after it starts
Separate repeatable crashes from one-off failures
Try to establish whether the crash occurs at the same menu, loading stage, location, or elapsed time. A repeatable trigger is valuable information even when there is no workaround. Record whether the crash returns after a restart and whether it began after a game, Windows, or graphics-driver update.
Recheck the published thresholds
Crashes during play can still be related to a machine below the published CPU-instruction, RAM, GPU-memory, operating-system, or SSD requirements. Confirm each item rather than checking only the graphics-card model. RSI’s figures are requirements for CIG games generally, not a promise that every qualifying PC will run without defects.
Keep the test environment conservative
Use current Windows and graphics drivers, close non-essential applications, and make sure the installation drive has the recommended free space. Do not make BIOS changes, edit the registry, disable security protection, or add broad antivirus exclusions as universal remedies; the available official material does not establish those actions as Squadron 42 fixes.
If a crash is reproducible, stop after a few controlled attempts rather than repeatedly forcing it or deleting files at random. Preserve the time, location, error wording, and system state. A stable reproduction is more actionable than a long list of unrecorded reinstalls.
Diagnose stuttering and poor frame pacing
Stutter is not the same as a low average frame rate. Brief pauses may come from asset loading, memory pressure, a background conflict, a driver issue, or a game-side defect. The available RSI material does not provide a Squadron 42-specific stutter setting, benchmark, or guaranteed configuration.
- Note whether the hitching is constant, occurs only while entering a new area, or appears immediately before a crash.
- Check installed RAM against RSI’s 16GB minimum and check GPU memory against the 4GB graphics requirement.
- Confirm that the game is installed on an SSD and that the drive is not nearly full.
- Close non-essential applications for one controlled test, following Steam’s general troubleshooting guidance.
- Compare your experience with RSI Public Telemetry when relevant. RSI describes Public Telemetry as a way to view performance on community machines; it provides context, not a diagnosis of your individual PC.
Do not present RSI’s requirement numbers as FPS targets or population statistics. They describe system thresholds, not measured performance on a particular card, processor, resolution, or graphics preset.

When comparing tests, keep the scene and settings as consistent as possible and write down whether the symptom is a long pause, repeated hitch, or generally low performance. Public Telemetry can show how community machines perform in aggregate, but similar-looking performance does not prove that two PCs share the same cause. It is a reference point, not a replacement for support diagnostics.
Consider hardware upgrades only when a requirement is missing
A purchase is justified only after you identify a component below RSI’s published threshold and confirm that it is the actual limiting factor. The official material does not identify a preferred brand or model.

Adding RAM will not repair a game-specific defect on a system that already meets the requirement, and a larger SSD will not correct every driver or launcher failure. Verify compatibility before purchasing and treat an upgrade as a conditional hardware decision, not a universal troubleshooting step.
Before buying, check the motherboard manual, available memory slots, drive connector, case clearance, power requirements, and operating-system support. Keep a backup plan for any drive migration. If your PC already meets RSI’s thresholds, ask RSI for diagnosis before treating a purchase as the next troubleshooting step.

Keep the report factual and chronological. Explain what you expected, what happened instead, and which controlled checks you completed. If the issue is intermittent, give the approximate frequency and the conditions that make it more likely. This helps distinguish a launch failure from an in-game crash or a frame-pacing complaint.
What not to treat as a universal fix
- Do not claim that a generic Windows or Steam step is an RSI-confirmed Squadron 42 remedy.
- Do not disable antivirus or other security protection broadly, edit the registry, change BIOS settings, or delete system files without a specific, current instruction from an authoritative support source.
- Do not infer a Squadron 42 fix from a Star Citizen patch note; a Star Citizen change does not establish a Squadron 42 solution.
- Do not buy hardware before checking the exact requirement, compatibility, and available physical space.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall while losing the error details and timeline that support needs.

- Classify the failure: launcher, post-launch, in-game crash, or stutter.

RSI says Linux and macOS are not currently supported. The published supported systems are 64-bit Windows 10 with the latest service pack or Windows 11.
What should I do if I have four CPU cores but the game still fails?
Check instruction-set support as well as core count. RSI specifies AVX, AVX2, and FMA3 support, so a quad-core processor that lacks one of those instructions is not confirmed to meet the requirement.
Should I verify files if I do not use Steam?
Use the official verification process for the platform that installed your copy. Steam’s verification procedure is general advice for Steam games and should not be applied to another installation route.
Will upgrading RAM or buying an SSD fix stuttering on every PC?

What is RSI Public Telemetry useful for?
