If Spotify closes as soon as a lossless track starts, first update the desktop app, restart it, and try again. Spotify Community staff said on October 13, 2026 that the documented desktop lossless-playback incident should now be fixed. If your app still crashes, switch temporarily to a lower audio quality, disable hardware acceleration, clear Spotify’s cache, and then perform a clean reinstall if necessary.
The sequence below separates a quick workaround from deeper repairs. It also checks network, Bluetooth or Spotify Connect paths, output-device settings, and audio-enhancement software so you can identify whether the problem is Spotify itself or one part of your playback chain.
Start with the least disruptive fix
The October 13, 2026 Spotify Community staff update is the first decision point: the frequently reported desktop crash during Lossless playback was marked as something that should now be fixed. Do not change drivers or delete local files before confirming that your app is current.

- Open Spotify on the affected computer and install any available update. Close and relaunch the app after updating.
- Play the same lossless track again. If it works, the incident fix or an ordinary restart resolved the problem.
- If it still crashes, open Spotify’s audio-quality settings, choose a lower quality than Lossless, restart playback, and test the track. Spotify’s lossless guidance specifically recommends lowering quality when lossless playback glitches or buffers.
- On the desktop app, turn off hardware acceleration under Settings, Compatibility, then Enable hardware acceleration. Restart Spotify and test Lossless again.
- Restart Spotify and clear its cache. If the crash persists, use a clean reinstall, remembering that downloaded music and podcasts must be downloaded again.
- Only after those steps, inspect the network, output device, Bluetooth or Spotify Connect route, sample-rate configuration, and audio-enhancement utilities.
This order preserves downloads, changes only one variable at a time, and gives you useful evidence if you need to contact Spotify Support.

What is known about the crash
Spotify documented this as a desktop incident in which the application could crash when Lossless playback began. The staff update did not publish a crash-rate statistic or a technical root-cause analysis; it said the issue should now be fixed. That means a crash after October 13 is not proof that your computer is defective, nor is it proof that every Lossless failure has the same cause.
Spotify’s support material describes Lossless files as up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz in its 2025 documentation. Lossless also depends on Premium eligibility, market rollout, device support, and the connection method. A desktop crash can therefore involve the app, the operating system’s graphics and audio layers, a third-party output device, or software that modifies sound.
- Incident state: the known desktop issue was reported as should now be fixed on October 13, 2026.
- Practical software checks: outdated Spotify or graphics software, hardware acceleration, corrupted cache, and an incomplete local installation.
- Audio-path checks: equalizers, Dolby Atmos or other enhancement utilities, invalid output selection, an unsuitable sample-rate setting, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, AUX, or stale device firmware.
- Network checks: Spotify recommends a steady 1.5 to 2 Mbps connection for best Lossless listening. A poor link more commonly causes buffering, but it can make a marginal playback path harder to diagnose.
Fix 1: lower quality to get playback working
Use the temporary workaround
Lowering quality is the fastest way to determine whether the crash is tied specifically to the Lossless path. It does not repair the underlying desktop installation, but it lets you listen while you continue troubleshooting.

- Find Audio quality. Set streaming quality below Lossless; choose a level your connection and device can play consistently.
- Return to the track, stop playback, and start it again. Do not merely let a crashed session resume.
- Test the same song and then a different album. Note whether both play normally at the lower setting.
If lower quality is stable but Lossless still closes Spotify, the failure is associated with the Lossless playback path or a component it exercises. Keep the lower setting while applying the next fixes so you have a reliable baseline.
Restore Lossless only after a clean test
After each repair, change only the quality setting and retest. If Lossless works for several tracks, the last change was probably relevant. If it fails immediately again while lower quality remains stable, record that repeatable result for your report; it is more useful than a general statement that Spotify is unstable.
Fix 2: update Spotify, the operating system, and graphics software
Because the incident was fixed in a later desktop build, an old client can continue to exhibit the original behavior. Use Spotify’s normal update mechanism or install the current official desktop app source, then restart the computer if the updater requests it.

Spotify Community troubleshooting also advises keeping the operating system and graphics software current. Install pending operating-system updates and the current driver or system update supplied for your computer’s graphics hardware. Reboot before testing so the new components are actually loaded.

- Do not test while another installer is replacing graphics or audio components.
- After rebooting, first test with hardware acceleration still enabled; if the crash remains, apply the dedicated hardware-acceleration change below.
Fix 3: disable desktop hardware acceleration
Hardware acceleration changes how Spotify uses graphics resources to render the application and playback interface. Spotify Community lists disabling it as a practical desktop step for crashes and recommends restarting Spotify afterward.
- Open Spotify’s profile menu and choose Settings.
- Scroll to the Compatibility section.
- Turn off
Enable hardware acceleration. - Close Spotify completely, reopen it, and try the same Lossless track.
This setting is a diagnostic change, not a claim that graphics hardware is permanently incompatible with Lossless. If the crash disappears, leave acceleration off while you update the operating system and graphics software, then retest later. If there is no change, turn your attention to cache, installation state, and the audio route rather than repeatedly toggling the setting.
Fix 4: restart Spotify and clear its cache
Restart cleanly
Spotify support starts troubleshooting with a restart because a crashed or partially initialized playback process can survive a simple return to the window. Quit Spotify, verify that it is no longer running in the system tray or task switcher, wait a few seconds, and launch it again.
Clear the local cache
Use Spotify’s Settings page and open the Storage or cache section, then choose its Clear cache control. The exact label can vary between desktop builds. Clearing cache removes temporary local data; it does not cancel your Premium account or remove playlists stored online. Close and reopen Spotify after the operation, sign in if prompted, and test Lossless before changing anything else.
Cache clearing is less disruptive than a reinstall, but it can require Spotify to rebuild temporary artwork and playback data. A slower first launch after the clear is expected; a crash at the same point in the same song is evidence that you should continue rather than repeatedly clearing the cache.

Fix 5: perform a clean reinstall
A clean reinstall is appropriate when updating, hardware-acceleration changes, and cache clearing do not stop the crash. Spotify’s Community FAQ describes it as a way to remove corrupted cache and installation files. Use the current official Spotify app source rather than an old installer saved on the computer.
- Sign out of Spotify if the app remains usable.
- Uninstall the desktop application using your operating system’s normal app-removal control.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the current Spotify desktop app from Spotify’s official source.
- Sign in, leave audio enhancements disabled for the first test, and play the previously failing track.
Important data consequence: Spotify warns that downloaded music and podcasts are local files tied to the previous installation. After a reinstall, download them again. Playlists, liked songs, and account settings that are stored online should return when you sign in, but offline downloads are not preserved by the clean-install process.
If a fresh installation works until you restore a particular enhancement utility or output device, that points to the restored component rather than Spotify’s new files. Add one change at a time so you can identify it.

Fix 6: check the playback path
Network requirements
Spotify recommends a steady 1.5 to 2 Mbps connection for best Lossless listening. This is a connection-quality recommendation, not a guarantee that every intermittent link will crash the app. Test on a stable network, pause large downloads, and avoid judging the result during a momentary outage.
If lower quality plays reliably but Lossless repeatedly fails on the same network, try the computer on another stable connection when possible. A change in result separates a local network problem from a client or output problem without requiring a new computer.
Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX
Lossless support depends on the connection method. Spotify notes that Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, and AUX can affect whether a route supports Lossless. A Bluetooth connection may also negotiate a different codec than the source file, so a successful connection does not prove that the complete path is Lossless.

- Disconnect the external route and test the computer’s built-in output or another known-valid output.
- If the built-in output is stable, reconnect Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, or AUX and test again.
- For supported third-party devices, install the manufacturer’s current firmware before drawing a conclusion.
Do not change several routes at once. Record which route was selected, whether Spotify crashed or merely buffered, and whether the same track behaves differently on another device.
Fix 7: validate the output device and audio configuration
Choose a valid output
Confirm that Spotify is mapped to an output device that still exists and is available to the operating system. Unplugged USB interfaces, disabled sound cards, and a monitor whose audio output disappeared can leave an application pointing at an invalid endpoint. Select a working output in the operating system and in Spotify’s device picker, then restart playback.
Check sample-rate settings
Spotify Community recommends checking that the device’s sample-rate configuration is sensible. Make sure the operating system’s format for the selected output is supported by that device and is not being forced to an unusual value by another application. Avoid making a permanent high-resolution change solely to fix a crash; the goal is a consistent, supported configuration.
Disable sound enhancements while testing
Turn off equalizers, Dolby Atmos, virtual-surround tools, motherboard audio suites, and other software that intercepts or enhances audio. Spotify’s Community FAQ specifically recommends disabling external sound-enhancing software during isolation. Re-enable one utility at a time only after Lossless playback is stable.

Start at the top when you need playback quickly. Move down when you need a clean diagnosis or when the lower-quality workaround is unacceptable.

Once the desktop app is updated and reinstalled only if necessary, compare controlled alternatives:

- Same computer, different output: separates Spotify from a USB interface, Bluetooth receiver, monitor, or other endpoint.
- Same account, another device: shows whether the account and track are healthy outside the affected desktop installation.
- Same account in the web player: helps distinguish the desktop application from account-level availability or a particular song.
- Different track on the same route: reveals whether one file or album consistently triggers the failure.
Record results in a small matrix: track, quality, Spotify version, operating system, output route, and result. A crash that follows the computer but not the account suggests a local installation or driver issue. A crash that follows one track across devices is information Spotify Support will need to investigate, although the available official material does not establish a specific track-level cause.
When and how to escalate
Contact Spotify Support or post in Spotify Community after the incident fix, lower-quality test, hardware-acceleration change, cache cleanup, and relevant output checks fail. Include reproducible details instead of only saying that Lossless crashes.
- Spotify app version and whether it was updated after October 13, 2026.
- Operating-system name and version.
- Computer model or relevant hardware, including the graphics device if known.
- Output device and route: built-in audio, USB, Bluetooth, Spotify Connect, or AUX.
- Whether hardware acceleration was enabled or disabled.
- Whether equalizers, Dolby Atmos, or other enhancement software was running.
- Whether the same track crashes every time, and whether another track behaves normally.
- Whether the web player or another device can play the song.
- Whether lower quality plays successfully and what happens at Lossless.
Do not include account passwords or payment information. If support asks for logs, follow its current upload instructions and describe the exact time and sequence that produced the crash.

What you should not assume
- A crash does not prove that Lossless requires new hardware. The official guidance identifies software, cache, configuration, connection, and device-support checks; it does not require a hardware purchase.
- Lower quality working does not prove that your internet connection is the only cause. It only establishes that the lower-quality path is more stable under that test.
- Bluetooth playback does not automatically provide Lossless transmission. The connection method and device support determine what reaches the listener.
- The October 13 incident notice is not a guarantee that every future crash has been eliminated. Keep your app and operating system current and report a repeatable failure with the details above.
Lossless readiness checklist
Before returning to normal listening, confirm each item:
- Spotify is on the current desktop build and has been restarted.
- The operating system and graphics software are current.
- Hardware acceleration has been tested in both states, with Spotify restarted after the change.
- The cache has been cleared, or the app has been cleanly reinstalled when cache clearing was insufficient.
- You understand that a clean reinstall requires offline downloads to be downloaded again.
- The network is steady at Spotify’s recommended 1.5 to 2 Mbps for best Lossless listening.
- The selected output is valid, its sample-rate configuration is sensible, and device firmware is current where applicable.
- Equalizers, Dolby Atmos, and other enhancements are disabled until the base path is stable.
- You have tested at least one other track or route so a single result is not mistaken for a complete fix.
