If a soundbar’s voice arrives after the actor’s mouth moves, or the TV and soundbar create an echo, start by turning off simultaneous TV-speaker output. Then confirm that the HDMI cable is connected to the television’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC port, select the corresponding external-speaker output, and try PCM or passthrough. Finally, adjust Audio Delay, AV Sync, or Lip-Sync while watching spoken dialogue. These steps address the most common causes: two speakers processing the same signal at different speeds, television or soundbar audio processing, and extra devices in the HDMI chain.

The menu names differ by television and soundbar model. The labels below are the functions to find, not promises that every model uses identical wording.

Identify whether you have echo, delay, or a source-specific problem

Correct diagnosis prevents you from changing several settings at once and losing track of what helped. Listen to a person speaking close to the camera, because music and sound effects make timing differences harder to judge.

What you hear or see Most likely explanation First check
A voice is consistently behind the mouth movement The soundbar, television, or another HDMI device is adding processing time. Use the TV or soundbar’s Audio Delay, AV Sync, or Lip-Sync control; then test passthrough or PCM.
The voice seems ahead of the mouth movement The current delay value is too high, or one device is compensating while another is not. Reduce the delay value in small steps and retest the same spoken line.
You hear two voices or a hollow, room-like echo The built-in TV speakers and external soundbar are playing simultaneously. Disable TV Speaker plus External Speaker or any equivalent dual-output mode.
Only one console, streaming box, or app is out of sync That source or a device between it and the TV is converting the audio. Disconnect other HDMI devices and inspect the affected source’s audio-format and passthrough settings.
The problem changes when you switch from an app to live TV Different sources use different audio formats and processing paths. Record the setting and delay that works for each source; avoid assuming one value fits all.

There is no universal millisecond figure that applies to every television and soundbar. Official support guidance from LG, Sony, Google TV Help, and Roku describes processing delay as the cause but does not publish a general delay number. Use the same dialogue scene for each adjustment instead of chasing a nominal value.

Stop the TV echo before correcting lip-sync

An echo usually means two speaker systems are active. The television’s speakers and the soundbar receive the same program, but their digital processing takes different amounts of time. Even a small difference produces a distinct repeat of speech.

Disable dual-speaker output

  1. Open the television’s Settings menu.
  2. Open Sound, Audio, or Audio Output.
  3. Choose External Speaker, HDMI ARC/eARC, Receiver, or the equivalent option instead of TV Speaker + External Speaker.
  4. Start a spoken program and confirm that sound comes from the soundbar only.

Some televisions call the combined mode Simultaneous Audio Output, TV Speaker and Optical, or Bluetooth plus TV Speaker. Any option that explicitly keeps the internal speakers on should be disabled while you test the soundbar.

Try PCM when the echo remains

If your television offers Digital Sound Output, select PCM as a diagnostic setting. PCM uses a straightforward stereo format that can remove an extra decoding or conversion step. If PCM eliminates the echo or delay, you can later test another format one change at a time to regain surround sound. Keep the setting that gives reliable synchronization with your equipment.

Verify the HDMI ARC or eARC connection

ARC and eARC are audio-return paths built into specific HDMI ports. A regular HDMI input can carry video to the television but may not send the television’s app or broadcast audio back to the soundbar.

Connect the correct ports

  1. Find the HDMI socket on the television labeled ARC or eARC. The label may include a number, such as HDMI 2 (eARC).
  2. Connect one end of the HDMI cable to that television port.
  3. Connect the other end to the soundbar port labeled HDMI OUT, TV-ARC, ARC, or eARC. Do not use an HDMI input on the soundbar unless its instructions specifically require that arrangement.
  4. On the television, select the external output named HDMI ARC/eARC, Receiver, or a manufacturer-specific equivalent.
  5. On the soundbar, select the TV, ARC, or eARC input if it does not switch automatically.

LG’s support guidance specifically requires the television cable to use the port marked HDMI ARC/eARC. Roku likewise warns that a standard HDMI port may provide video without carrying soundbar audio. If the television has several HDMI sockets, the printed port label is more reliable than its position on the panel.

Check HDMI control and audio-return options

ARC/eARC often depends on HDMI control, called HDMI-CEC on many products. If the television has a setting such as HDMI-CEC, Device Link, or a manufacturer’s control name, enable it while troubleshooting so the TV and soundbar can communicate about audio routing and power. If the soundbar repeatedly changes inputs or wakes with no audio, toggle the control setting off and on, then restart both devices.

Choose passthrough, eARC, or PCM deliberately

Every device that receives an audio signal may decode, mix, or convert it. A television can process audio from an internal app before sending it to a soundbar; a console, streaming box, or AVR can add another stage. Google TV Help notes that AVRs and soundbars in the HDMI chain can introduce delay because each device needs time to process the signal.

Use eARC and passthrough when the equipment supports them

Roku describes eARC as having built-in audio and video lip-sync support. If both the television and soundbar support eARC, enable eARC rather than limiting the connection to ARC. In the TV’s advanced audio menu, choose Passthrough or Auto passthrough when available. Passthrough sends the source format onward with less television conversion, which can avoid delay caused by TV processing.

Passthrough is not automatically the best choice for every combination. If you hear silence, clicks, or an unsupported-format warning, return temporarily to PCM, confirm that synchronization works, and then test Auto or passthrough again after checking the soundbar’s supported formats.

When PCM is the safer diagnostic choice

PCM is useful when you need to establish a stable baseline, when the soundbar does not decode the selected surround format, or when a television’s automatic conversion is creating a timing mismatch. It may reduce the available surround formats, so treat it as a controlled test rather than an assumption that PCM is always superior.

Adjust Audio Delay, AV Sync, or Lip-Sync

Once only the soundbar is active and the connection is correct, use the timing control. Depending on the model, the setting can be in the television, soundbar, or both. Sony specifically recommends manual Audio/Video Sync or Audio Delay adjustment for optical connections, and similar controls are useful over HDMI.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Find the control

  • On the TV, look under Settings > Sound or Audio for AV Sync, Audio Delay, Digital Output Audio Delay, or Lip-Sync.
  • On the soundbar, look in its remote-control menu, display panel, or companion settings for Audio Sync, Delay, or Lip-Sync.
  • If both devices expose a delay, change one at a time. Do not add the same correction in both places without retesting.

Calibrate with spoken dialogue

  1. Play a clear dialogue scene and pause any picture settings that alter motion or frame rate during the test.
  2. Note whether the voice is late or early relative to the mouth.
  3. Change the delay by one small increment in the direction that should correct the error.
  4. Replay the same sentence. Use several words rather than a single consonant or sound effect as your reference.
  5. Continue until the voice and mouth align, then test a second program and a live source.

Some controls add delay only, so they can correct sound that is early but cannot make already-late sound arrive sooner. If the minimum delay still leaves voices behind the picture, return to the connection and processing checks instead of continually changing the slider.

Isolate every device in the HDMI chain

A direct TV-to-soundbar connection is the simplest reference configuration. Temporarily disconnect consoles, streaming boxes, Blu-ray players, and AVRs from the television and soundbar. Leave only the television and soundbar connected through ARC/eARC, then test an internal TV app or broadcast.

  1. Turn off the television, soundbar, and connected HDMI sources.
  2. Disconnect the extra sources from HDMI, leaving the ARC/eARC cable in place.
  3. Restart the television and soundbar, select the external audio output, and test dialogue.
  4. Reconnect one source at a time, testing the same scene or a known live program after each connection.
  5. When the delay returns, inspect that source’s audio output, bitstream, PCM, and passthrough options. Also check whether it is routed through an AVR or switch.

If only one source is affected, the soundbar is unlikely to be the sole cause. Keep the source on the format that remains synchronized, or route it directly to the television if that removes an unnecessary processing stage.

Use optical when ARC or eARC is unavailable

An optical, or Toslink, connection is a valid fallback when the television or soundbar lacks compatible ARC/eARC. Connect the television’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input, select Optical or Digital Audio on the soundbar, and choose the television’s optical or external-speaker output.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optical generally offers fewer control and format capabilities than ARC/eARC in many setups. It does not provide the same HDMI device-control path, and the television may expose fewer passthrough choices. Sony recommends manual Audio/Video Sync or Audio Delay adjustment when optical systems are delayed.

Optical troubleshooting checks

  • Remove the small protective caps from a new Toslink cable before inserting it.
  • Push the connector straight into each optical port; it should seat without force.
  • Confirm that the TV’s digital output is not muted and that the soundbar input is Optical.
  • Try PCM if an automatic or bitstream format produces silence or unstable timing.
  • Use the same dialogue-based sync procedure after the optical connection is producing sound.

Power-cycle and reseat the system

Connection and handshake errors can look like a permanent delay. Turn off the television and soundbar, unplug both briefly, reseat the HDMI or optical cable, and restart the television before selecting the external output again. If the soundbar has a separate subwoofer or rear-speaker system, allow those units to reconnect before judging timing.

After a restart, verify the output mode because some televisions revert to TV Speaker, Auto, or a previous input. If the delay appears with more than one television or source after these checks, consult the soundbar manufacturer for model-specific firmware, reset, and compatibility guidance.

HDMI ARC/eARC versus optical: which should you use?

Decision factor HDMI eARC HDMI ARC Optical
Audio-return path from TV apps Yes, through the TV’s eARC port Yes, through the TV’s ARC port Yes, through the TV’s optical output
Lip-sync support Roku describes eARC as including built-in audio and video lip-sync support. Synchronization still depends on the devices and their processing settings. Manual sync adjustment may be needed.
Passthrough options Typically the most flexible when both devices support the formats. Depends on the TV and soundbar’s ARC capabilities. Fewer control and format capabilities in many setups.
Device control Uses HDMI control features when enabled. Uses HDMI control features when enabled. Does not provide the same HDMI control path.
Best first choice Compatible TV and soundbar with eARC, especially with high-bandwidth formats. Compatible equipment without eARC. ARC/eARC unavailable, unreliable, or not present.

The table describes capabilities rather than a guarantee of perfect synchronization. A badly configured eARC chain can still be delayed, while an optical connection can be perfectly aligned after manual adjustment.

Brand guidance from official support documentation

LG televisions

LG’s guidance for echo is to use one speaker output, set Digital Sound Output to PCM when appropriate, and adjust AV Sync for the soundbar. On an LG television, look for the external-speaker or HDMI ARC/eARC choice under the sound output menu, then confirm that the cable is in the port marked ARC/eARC.

Sony televisions and soundbars

Sony attributes delay to audio processing in the soundbar or home-theater system when connected by HDMI or optical. Its documented remedy is to use the manual Audio/Video Sync or Audio Delay control, with optical systems often requiring that adjustment. Sony menu wording and the available range vary by model.

Roku TVs and devices

Roku warns that a standard HDMI port may carry video without returning audio to a soundbar. Use the HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC and select the matching audio output. Roku also identifies eARC’s built-in audio and video lip-sync support and recommends Auto passthrough where supported to avoid unnecessary TV processing.

Google TV devices

Google TV Help points to AVRs and soundbars in the HDMI chain as possible sources of delay because each device processes the signal. Use the isolation procedure above: test the TV and soundbar alone, then add each HDMI source until the device or setting that reintroduces the delay is identified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Special cases: games, live broadcasts, and built-in apps

Game consoles

Games can expose a timing mismatch more clearly than movies because player input, animation, and sound effects are immediate. Test the console with the television’s game picture mode if available, but change only one audio setting at a time. If the console is the only delayed source, compare its PCM and bitstream options and bypass any intermediate AVR or HDMI switch during testing.

Live television

Live broadcasts may already contain production timing differences. First compare two channels and an internal streaming app. If every source is delayed by the same amount, adjust the TV or soundbar sync. If only one channel or broadcast type is affected, avoid compensating the entire system for that single source.

Built-in streaming apps

Internal apps send audio through the television’s own processing path. Test them with ARC/eARC and passthrough, then compare the result with a directly connected streaming device. A difference between the two points to the television’s app or output processing rather than the soundbar speaker itself.

When replacing the soundbar is justified

Replacement should be the last hardware decision, not the first response to a sync problem. Consider a different soundbar only when the existing unit lacks eARC where your system needs it, has no usable passthrough option, provides no adjustable synchronization control, or remains delayed across multiple televisions and sources after correct cabling and isolation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying a cable, verify the port labels and length. The practical accessory for an eARC setup is an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for eARC soundbar when the existing cable is missing, damaged, too short, or connected to the wrong port. A Toslink optical audio cable is the fallback for equipment without compatible ARC/eARC. Cable replacement cannot correct a dual-speaker echo or a processing setting by itself.

Symptom-based recovery checklist

  • Echo: turn off TV Speaker plus External Speaker; leave the soundbar as the only output.
  • No sound over HDMI: move the cable to the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC port, then select HDMI ARC/eARC.
  • Sound consistently late: test PCM or passthrough, then reduce processing stages and adjust Audio Delay or AV Sync.
  • Sound early: lower the existing delay value before changing the connection.
  • Only one source delayed: disconnect other HDMI devices and inspect that source’s format and passthrough settings.
  • Optical delay: select Optical, try PCM if necessary, and use manual Audio/Video Sync.
  • Problem returns after standby: power-cycle both devices, reseat the cable, reselect external output, and check HDMI control.
  • Problem follows the soundbar: test it with another TV or source and contact the manufacturer if the delay remains.

Final verification

After making a change, test at least one internal TV source and one external source. Confirm that the TV speakers are silent, the soundbar input is correct, and the mouth and voice align in a sustained dialogue scene. Save or note the working output, format, passthrough, and delay settings so a future device reconnect does not recreate the problem.
