If OneDrive shows “Sorry there is a problem displaying this folder” in Windows, first check whether the files are available at OneDrive online and confirm the Windows app is signed in to the account that contains them. If those checks do not help, a reset of the sync app is a suggested next step—but the error has no confirmed single cause, and no fix is guaranteed.

Check whether the folder is available online

Open OneDrive in a web browser and look for the affected files. In a 2019 Microsoft Q&A report about this exact message, the user could see files in the browser while the Windows app could not display the folder. Read the Q&A report.

If the files appear online, that suggests the problem may be limited to the local sync app. It does not establish the cause, nor does it confirm that every file on the computer is safely synced. Before changing OneDrive’s setup, make sure important files are accessible through a reliable copy or online.

Confirm the account signed in to OneDrive

Check which account the Windows OneDrive app is using and confirm it is the account that contains the affected folder. The accepted community reply in the Q&A report recommends checking that the same account is signed in. If the wrong account is active, sign in with the one associated with the files.

Reset the OneDrive sync app

The accepted reply in that 2019 community thread suggests resetting OneDrive with this command. It is community advice, not a Microsoft-confirmed resolution for every version of the app.

  1. Press Windows key + R to open Run.
  2. Enter %localappdata%MicrosoftOneDriveonedrive.exe /reset and select OK.
  3. If OneDrive does not start again, open the Start menu, search for OneDrive, and launch the app.

Microsoft’s reset instructions can change with the app and Windows version. Check Microsoft’s current OneDrive reset guidance before using a command that may not match your installation.

If the folder still will not display

Other troubleshooting guides list unlinking and reconnecting the account, changing the local sync-folder location, and reinstalling OneDrive as further options. These steps alter the local sync setup and are more disruptive than checking the account or resetting the app; the available sources do not establish that one works better than another.

  • Unlink and reconnect: MiniTool describes unlinking and setting up OneDrive again as a possible remedy. It says unlinking stops syncing and does not delete cloud files, but verify that important files are available before proceeding. MiniTool’s troubleshooting guide.
  • Change the local folder location: This is another option listed in the troubleshooting guides. Check OneDrive’s current setup instructions for your version before moving or choosing a sync-folder location. MiniTool’s troubleshooting guide.
  • Reinstall OneDrive: A reinstall is also suggested by third-party troubleshooting pages. Use current instructions for your Windows and OneDrive versions, and first verify that files you need are safely accessible. EaseUS’s troubleshooting guide.

What this error does—and does not—tell you

The message has been reported when opening a Windows OneDrive folder, including a case where files remained visible online. The available reports do not establish a root cause, a success rate for any remedy, or a version-specific Microsoft resolution. Treat each step as troubleshooting rather than a guaranteed fix. If files are missing both online and locally, preserve any available copies before resetting or changing the sync setup.
