Start with Sony’s recovery order: switch the WH-CH730N off, charge it over USB-C, switch it on again, and restart the phone or computer you are trying to use. If it still fails, stop Bluetooth on the device that was connected most recently, then pair manually with the intended source from within 1 m (3.2 ft). A reset preserves pairing data; initialization is the last resort because it erases every saved pairing.
The sequence below follows Sony’s troubleshooting path and explains what each step proves, what to do when the headset is missing from the Bluetooth list, and when support or replacement is more sensible than further resets.
What the connection symptoms usually mean
The WH-CH730N can fail at several different stages. Identifying the stage prevents you from erasing pairings unnecessarily.
- No lights, no voice guidance, or no response: begin with charging and the power-cycle sequence.
- The headset powers on but connects to the wrong device: a nearby phone, tablet, or computer used most recently may be taking the automatic connection.
- The headset is not listed for a new connection: move the source within 1 m (3.2 ft), enter pairing mode manually, and retry the Bluetooth search.
- It connects and then drops repeatedly: test after restarting both devices, prevent other nearby devices from reconnecting, and use Sony’s reset procedure.
- Nothing changes after a reset: initialization clears all pairing information and is the final software step before contacting Sony or a dealer.
These symptoms do not establish a specific hardware failure by themselves. Follow the steps in order and note the first step at which the behavior changes.

1. Perform Sony’s basic recovery sequence
Sony’s troubleshooting order starts with the least destructive action. Do the steps in this order rather than repeatedly attempting to pair while the headset is in an unknown state.
- Turn the headset off. Wait for it to finish shutting down.
- Charge it. Connect the USB-C charging cable to the headset and an AC power source. Allow enough charge for the headset to start normally; an uncharged headset cannot complete Bluetooth pairing.
- Turn the headset on again. Try the connection after the power cycle rather than immediately changing several Bluetooth settings.
- Restart the connected phone or computer. A restart clears a stalled Bluetooth session on the source device.
- Retry the connection. If it works, no reset is needed. If the problem remains, continue with the source-device and pairing checks below.
Sony also points owners to the Sound Connect app and its support site as part of the troubleshooting path. Use those official tools after the basic restart if you need Sony’s current software guidance for your device.
2. Stop a nearby device from capturing the connection
The WH-CH730N may automatically reconnect to the last Bluetooth device used when that device is nearby. This can make the headset appear to ignore a new pairing request even though Bluetooth is working normally.
- Look for the phone, tablet, or computer that was connected most recently.
- Turn Bluetooth off on that device, or power the device down temporarily.
- Keep only the intended source device active for the next pairing attempt.
- If the intended source already contains an old WH-CH730N entry, remove or forget that saved entry before pairing again.
Deleting the saved entry on the intended source does not erase the headset’s own pairing database. It simply removes the source’s stale record so the two devices can negotiate a fresh connection. If another nearby device still reconnects first, disable Bluetooth on that device again before retrying.

3. Pair the WH-CH730N from scratch
Prepare the devices
- Charge the headset and keep the Bluetooth source within 1 m (3.2 ft).
- Disable Bluetooth on other nearby devices that have used the headset.
- Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings so you can select the headset as soon as it appears.
First pairing or pairing after initialization
For a first pairing, and after the headset has been initialized, the WH-CH730N enters pairing mode automatically when it is turned on. Wait for the pairing indication and look for WH-CH730N series in the source device’s Bluetooth list.
- Turn on the headset with the source device within 1 m (3.2 ft).
- Open Bluetooth settings on the phone or computer.
- Select WH-CH730N series.
- If a passkey is requested, enter
0000. - Wait for the source to report that the connection is complete before playing audio.
Manual pairing for a second or later device
When the headset has already been paired before, manual pairing may be required. With the headset on, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds or more. Continue until the indicator repeatedly flashes blue twice and voice guidance says Pairing. Then select WH-CH730N series on the source device.
Pairing mode cancels after 5 minutes. If the headset times out, start the process again: hold the power button for about 5 seconds, wait for the repeated blue double flashes and the pairing prompt, and select the headset promptly.

When the name does not appear
- Confirm the headset is powered on and sufficiently charged.
- Move the source to within 1 m (3.2 ft).
- Turn Bluetooth off on the last-connected nearby device.
- For a previously paired headset, hold the power button for about 5 seconds to force manual pairing mode.
- If the source has a stale WH-CH730N entry, remove it and search again.
- Restart the source device, then repeat the pairing attempt before moving to a reset.
4. Reset without deleting pairing information
Use Sony’s reset when the headset powers on but its Bluetooth behavior remains unreliable after the basic recovery and pairing checks. A reset is less disruptive than initialization because it retains pairing information and other settings.
- Connect the headset to an AC outlet with the USB-C cable. The cable must be connected for this reset procedure.
- Press the power button and the noise canceling/Ambient Sound Mode button at the same time.
- Watch the indicator. Sony describes a successful reset as the indicator turning off and then lighting again.
- After the reset, test the existing connection. If it remains unreliable, remove the stale source entry and pair again using the manual-pairing steps.
This reset does not delete the headset’s pairing information. That makes it the appropriate next step when you want to clear the headset’s operating state without forcing every phone and computer to be paired again.
5. Initialize only after reset fails
Initialization restores factory settings and deletes all pairing information. Use it only after charging, restarting, preventing automatic reconnection, manual pairing, and the non-destructive reset have failed.
- Turn the headset off.
- Remove the USB-C cable. Initialization is performed with USB-C power disconnected.
- Press and hold the power button and the play/call button together for about 10 seconds or more.
- Release the buttons when the indicator flashes blue four times. That four-flash indication marks completion.
- On every phone or computer that still lists the headset, delete or forget the old WH-CH730N series entry.
- Start pairing again. The headset enters pairing mode automatically after initialization; select WH-CH730N series and enter
0000if the source requests a passkey.
Do not leave old entries on the source devices and assume they will update themselves. Sony’s initialization procedure removes the headset’s records, so the source-side records must be removed and recreated as well.

| The headset will not turn on or gives no response | Charge over USB-C, turn it off and on, then restart the phone or computer. | Sony’s troubleshooting sequence begins with power and charging before Bluetooth changes. |
| It connects to a different nearby device | Disable Bluetooth on the last-connected device or power it down. | The WH-CH730N can automatically reconnect to the most recently used nearby source. |
| The headset is absent from the Bluetooth list | Move within 1 m (3.2 ft), hold power for about 5 seconds for manual pairing, and search for WH-CH730N series. | Manual pairing is required for a second or later device, and pairing mode expires after 5 minutes. |
| An old entry appears but the connection will not complete | Forget the source-side entry, restart the source, and pair again. | A stale saved record can prevent a clean negotiation even when the headset is operating. |
| The headset powers on but keeps disconnecting | Run the basic recovery, prevent other-device reconnection, then perform the USB-C reset. | The reset clears the headset state while retaining pairings. |
| The reset did not restore reliable pairing | Initialize with USB-C removed, then delete old entries and pair again. | Initialization is Sony’s final headset-side recovery and erases all pairing data. |
| It still fails after initialization | Contact Sony support or the nearest Sony dealer. | Sony directs owners to support or a dealer when the headset remains incorrect after initialization. |
How to tell whether the source device or headset is at fault
Testing one variable at a time gives you useful evidence without inventing a failure diagnosis.
If only one phone or computer fails
Restart that source, remove its saved WH-CH730N entry, and pair again while other nearby Bluetooth devices are disabled. If the headset connects normally to another available source, the original source’s saved Bluetooth state is the more specific suspect. Keep the comparison limited to pairing behavior; it does not prove that every Bluetooth function on the source is faulty.
If every source fails
Repeat the charge, power-cycle, manual-pairing, reset, and initialization sequence with a source device within 1 m (3.2 ft). If the headset still cannot complete pairing after initialization, the official next step is Sony support or a dealer rather than repeated resets.

If the headset works briefly and then disconnects
First eliminate automatic reconnection from another nearby device. Then restart the active source and apply the non-destructive reset. If the behavior survives a clean re-pairing and later survives initialization, document the exact sequence and contact Sony; repeated disconnections after those steps are no longer a simple stale-pairing problem.

Reset, initialize, or replace: a practical decision framework
Replacement should not be the first response to a pairing problem. Use the following checks to decide whether further recovery is reasonable or whether support and replacement deserve consideration.
| Question | If the answer is yes | If the answer is no |
|---|---|---|
| Does the headset power on and accept USB-C charging? | Continue with source-device checks and pairing. | Charging or power needs to be resolved before Bluetooth troubleshooting can be meaningful. |
| Does disabling Bluetooth on the last-connected device stop the wrong-device connection? | Pair with the intended source and keep the other device disabled during setup. | Continue to manual pairing and source-side entry removal. |
| Does the USB-C reset restore a stable connection while retaining pairings? | Keep the existing pairings and monitor the connection. | Proceed to initialization after confirming the reset was performed with USB-C connected. |
| Does initialization restore pairing? | Recreate pairings on each phone or computer and test normally. | Contact Sony support or a dealer before deciding on replacement. |
| Is the problem limited to one source device? | Focus on that source’s Bluetooth state and saved entry. | A headset-side fault becomes more plausible after the full recovery path, but Sony support should make the final determination. |
The total cost comparison is straightforward: weigh any dealer or support remedy against replacing the exact WH-CH730N model. The troubleshooting evidence above is more useful than an assumed failure rate; Sony’s cited help pages publish no numeric disconnection or failure statistic for this model.
When to contact Sony
Contact Sony support or the nearest Sony dealer when the headset still does not operate correctly after initialization. Have the following information ready:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Whether the headset powers on and charges over USB-C.
- Which source devices were tested and whether the issue affected one or all of them.
- Whether the headset entered manual pairing mode and displayed repeated blue double flashes.
- Whether the reset produced the indicator-off-then-on behavior.
- Whether initialization produced four blue flashes and whether old source entries were deleted afterward.
Describe the exact point of failure rather than only saying that Bluetooth does not work. For example, distinguish between “the headset never appears,” “it pairs but reconnects to another device,” and “it disconnects after a successful pairing.” That distinction helps support avoid repeating steps you have already completed.
