Most WH-CH520 pairing failures come from one of four causes: the headset is not in the right pairing mode, another device has auto-connected, an old Bluetooth record is conflicting, or the headset needs a reset or factory initialization. Keep the headset charged and within 1 m (3.2 ft) of the source, then work through the sequence below. The documented button procedures in this guide are for the Sony WH-CH520; WH-CH530 owners should use the model-specific manual for any control combination that differs.

Start with the fastest WH-CH520 fix

Do these checks in order before changing settings:

  1. Turn on the WH-CH520 and wake the phone, tablet, computer or other source device.
  2. Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the source.
  3. Move the headset and source to within 1 m (3.2 ft) and make sure the headset has enough charge.
  4. Look for another phone, tablet or computer that may have connected automatically. Disconnect that device before trying the intended source.
  5. For the first pairing after purchase or initialization, turn on the headset and select WH-CH520 from the source’s Bluetooth list.
  6. For a second or later device, press and hold the headset’s Bluetooth button for about five seconds, then select WH-CH520 on the source.
  7. If an old WH-CH520 entry remains on the source, forget or delete it and begin pairing again.

Pairing mode cancels after five minutes and the headset turns off, so complete the selection before that timeout.

Check which model you have

The model name is printed on the headset and its packaging. The procedures and limits documented by Sony in the material used here apply to the WH-CH520. WH-CH530 is a different model designation, so do not assume that a button combination, indicator pattern or menu label is identical. The general checks in this article—adequate charge, Bluetooth enabled, short distance and eliminating competing connections—are sensible first checks for either model. For a WH-CH530-specific reset or initialization sequence, follow the WH-CH530 help guide or contact Sony support rather than applying the WH-CH520 combination by guesswork.

How WH-CH520 pairing behaves

First pairing

When the WH-CH520 is turned on for its first pairing after purchase, it enters pairing mode automatically. Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and choose WH-CH520. Keep the two devices close together and finish within five minutes.

Adding another source

After the headset has already been paired, turning it on does not necessarily put it into discoverable mode for a new source. Press and hold the headset Bluetooth button for approximately five seconds. The source should then show WH-CH520 as an available device.

One audio stream at a time

The headset can retain pairing records for up to eight devices, but it plays audio from only one paired device at a time. Having several records saved is not the same as having several active audio connections.

Complete troubleshooting workflow

1. Re-establish the basic conditions

Turn on the headset and wake the source device if its screen or operating system is asleep. Verify that Bluetooth is switched on and that the source is not in a mode that disables wireless radios. If a previously working connection dropped, start the connection again from the source’s Bluetooth menu rather than assuming it will resume immediately.

Keep the headset and source within 1 m (3.2 ft) while pairing. A low battery can also prevent a stable pairing attempt, so charge the headset before continuing if its charge level is uncertain.

2. Stop an unwanted automatic connection

The WH-CH520 can reconnect to a device it used previously. That behavior can make the intended phone or computer appear unable to connect even though the headset is operating normally. Check nearby devices that have used the headset, such as an old phone, work laptop or tablet. Open Bluetooth on the device that has taken the connection and disconnect WH-CH520. Then return to the intended source and start pairing or connecting again.

3. Enter the correct pairing mode

Use the automatic first-pairing behavior only for the first pairing after purchase or after initialization. For every additional source, hold the Bluetooth button for about five seconds. Start the search on the source immediately, select WH-CH520, and complete the process before the five-minute pairing window expires.

If WH-CH520 does not appear, cancel the source’s Bluetooth search, repeat the five-second button hold, and keep the devices close. Do not repeatedly tap the button; the documented action for a later device is a continuous hold.

4. Remove a stale Bluetooth record

A source device can retain an old WH-CH520 entry even when the headset’s internal pairing information has changed. In the source’s Bluetooth settings, choose the WH-CH520 entry and use the operating system’s Forget, Remove or Delete command. The exact label varies by phone, tablet and computer.

After removing the record, turn Bluetooth off and on again on the source, put the headset into the appropriate pairing mode, and select WH-CH520 as a new device. This step is especially important after factory initialization because initialization erases the headset’s own pairing data while the source may still retain its previous record.

5. Reset without erasing pairing records

A reset is the less destructive recovery step. It does not serve as a factory wipe. Follow this sequence:

  1. Connect the USB cable to the headset so it is charging.
  2. Leave the USB cable connected.
  3. Press Volume + and Volume − at the same time.
  4. Release the buttons after the reset action completes.
  5. Disconnect and reconnect the USB Type-C cable so the headset can charge normally.

Because the reset is performed with USB connected and is described separately from initialization, use it when you want to troubleshoot operation without deliberately deleting the headset’s pairing data.

  • MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.

6. Initialize to factory settings

Initialization is the destructive step: it restores factory settings and deletes the headset’s pairing information. Use it when ordinary pairing recovery and the non-destructive reset have not solved the problem.

  1. Turn the WH-CH520 off.
  2. Disconnect the USB cable from the headset.
  3. Press and hold Power and Volume − together for at least seven seconds.
  4. Watch for the blue indicator to flash four times. That pattern indicates that initialization has completed.
  5. On the phone, tablet or computer, forget or delete the old WH-CH520 Bluetooth entry.
  6. Pair again as if the headset were new: turn it on for the first automatic pairing mode, keep it within 1 m (3.2 ft), and select WH-CH520 on the source.

If the indicator does not flash four times, do not assume that initialization occurred. Turn the headset off, confirm that USB is disconnected, and repeat the complete button sequence for at least seven seconds. If it still will not initialize or operate, proceed to service support rather than repeatedly forcing the controls.

Reset or initialize? Choose the right operation

Operation USB connection Buttons Effect on pairing data When to use it
Reset USB connected Volume + and Volume − together Not described as deleting pairing records First recovery step when the headset behaves incorrectly but you want to preserve its stored device relationships
Initialization USB disconnected Power and Volume − for at least 7 seconds Restores factory settings and deletes pairing information When pairing records or corrupted state appear to be preventing reconnection after the basic workflow

The USB condition is part of the procedure, not an optional detail. Connecting the cable for initialization or leaving it disconnected for the reset changes which operation you are attempting.

What to do when the headset keeps choosing the wrong device

Automatic reconnection is usually a source-device issue rather than a failure to enter pairing mode. Identify every nearby device that has used the WH-CH520 and disconnect the one that wins the connection. If you no longer want that device to reconnect automatically, remove its WH-CH520 record or disable its Bluetooth temporarily while pairing the intended source.

Once the intended source is connected, remember that audio comes from only one paired device at a time. A second device can remain stored for future use, but it cannot play simultaneously through the headset. To switch sources, disconnect the current source first, then connect the other paired device from its Bluetooth menu.

Understand the eight-device storage limit

Sony specifies storage for up to eight paired devices. The limit concerns saved pairing relationships, not the number of devices that can play audio simultaneously.

Situation Expected behavior Practical action
One to eight devices have been paired The headset can retain those pairing records Disconnect the active source before connecting another
A ninth device is paired The device with the oldest connection date is overwritten Pair the new device, then re-pair the displaced device later if needed
Several records exist but no audio plays from the desired source Another paired source may still be the active connection Disconnect that source and connect the desired one
Initialization has just been completed All headset-side pairing information has been erased Forget the old source entry and create a fresh pairing

If a frequently used device disappears after adding several others, the eight-device limit and oldest-record replacement explain the behavior; it is not evidence that the headset can maintain eight simultaneous audio streams.

Symptom-by-symptom decisions

Symptom Most likely point to check Next action
WH-CH520 never appears in the source’s Bluetooth list The headset is not in the required pairing mode, is too far away, or has insufficient charge Charge it, move within 1 m, then use automatic first pairing or hold Bluetooth for about five seconds for a later device
It appeared, but selection fails A stale source record or another device’s automatic connection Disconnect the competing device, forget the old WH-CH520 record, and retry
The headset worked before but will not reconnect The source may be asleep, Bluetooth may be off, or another source may have taken the connection Wake the source, verify Bluetooth, disconnect the other source, and initiate the connection again
Pairing stops after waiting The five-minute pairing window has expired Put the headset back into pairing mode and complete selection promptly
Problems remain after a reset The stored state or source record may still conflict Perform initialization with USB disconnected, then forget and re-pair
The headset still fails after initialization A fault remains after software and pairing recovery Contact the nearest Sony dealer or Sony support for service guidance

WH-CH530 owners: avoid applying the wrong button sequence

The title includes WH-CH530 because readers often search for both model numbers, but the documented procedures above are specifically identified for WH-CH520. A WH-CH530 owner can still begin with the non-invasive checks: charge the headset, enable Bluetooth, wake the source, keep the devices close, disconnect a device that auto-connected, and remove a stale Bluetooth record. Before holding Power, Volume or Bluetooth buttons on a WH-CH530, verify the exact sequence in that model’s Sony help guide. If the guide is unavailable or the headset remains unusable, Sony support or an authorized dealer can confirm the correct procedure.

After pairing succeeds

Test the connection with a short audio clip or call before moving the devices apart. Keep track of which source is currently connected so an older phone or computer does not unexpectedly reclaim the headset later. If you regularly use more than one source, leave unused sources disconnected while pairing a new one and monitor the eight-record limit.

When a future connection fails, begin with the basic conditions and competing-device check rather than immediately erasing all pairings. Reserve initialization for cases where those steps and the USB-connected reset have not restored normal operation.

When to stop troubleshooting

Sony’s help guidance directs owners to the nearest Sony dealer if the headset still does not operate correctly after initialization. Bring the headset, its charging cable and the source device information when seeking assistance. Tell the technician whether the blue indicator flashed four times during initialization and whether the WH-CH520 appeared in the source’s Bluetooth list; those observations distinguish a pairing-record problem from a broader operating fault.
