The fix depends on which connection problem you have: the WF-1000XM6 may fail to appear or pair, an established Bluetooth link may disconnect, or Bluetooth may stay connected while sound skips or disappears. Start with the matching path below. Pairing problems usually require charging and clearing old Bluetooth records; dropouts usually improve after prioritizing a stable connection, reducing interference, and isolating competing devices.
The steps below follow Sony USA Support instructions for the WF-1000XM6. Menu names can differ slightly by phone, computer, operating system, or Sony | Sound Connect version.
Identify the symptom before changing settings
Do not treat every Bluetooth problem as a pairing failure. The symptom determines the least-destructive fix.
| What you see | Start here | Do not do first |
|---|---|---|
| The earbuds do not appear in Bluetooth, or pairing fails | Check charging and case seating, restart the source, delete the old pairing record, and pair again | Do not initialize immediately; initialization deletes saved pairing information |
| The earbuds connect, then disconnect | Test another playback device and remove old or competing Bluetooth connections | Do not assume the earbuds are defective until the source-device test is complete |
| Bluetooth says connected but audio skips | Use Stable Connection quality, move closer, and test away from radio congestion | Do not repeatedly re-pair without checking interference and codec settings |
| Bluetooth is connected but there is no sound | Check playback, volume, balance, and the selected output device | Do not jump to factory initialization before these checks |
Five-minute triage
Before changing several settings, note three facts: whether the problem is pairing or playback, whether it happens in one location or everywhere, and whether another source behaves the same way. This creates a useful decision path:
#1 Best Overall
- EXCEPTIONAL AUDIO: Catch details like never before. Designed with a High-Res Audio¹ 24-bit hi-fi codec, the latest Galaxy earbuds maintain the integrity of your favorite audio over Bluetooth.
- TWO-WAY SPEAKER: Enjoy every audio experience to the fullest with two speakers in both Buds, including a tweeter for rich highs and a woofer for deep, full lows.
- HD VOICE: Enjoy clear phone calls with Galaxy Buds4 Pro and Galaxy S26 Series² —they work together to deliver crisp and clear conversations.
- ANC 2.0: Wherever you go, Adaptive Active Noise Cancellation 2.0³ intelligently adapts in real time to provide stronger, smoother noise cancellation wherever you go.
- OPTIMIZED COMFORT: Enjoy that just-right fit, with an improved, ear-hugging design and changeable ear tips.
- If the earbuds are not listed or will not pair, check charge and seating, restart the source, forget the old record, and retry.
- If they pair with a second phone or computer, concentrate on the original source’s Bluetooth settings or support rather than resetting the earbuds repeatedly.
- If playback skips only in crowded places, treat distance and radio congestion as the first suspects.
- If the earbuds fail across sources, perform the non-destructive reset before considering initialization.
Change one variable at a time and replay the same material. A controlled retest tells you whether a setting actually helped and prevents unnecessary loss of pairing data.
If the WF-1000XM6 will not pair or connect
1. Check the case, charge level, and earbud seating
Put both earbuds in the charging case and check the case indicator. In Sony’s WF-1000XM6 pairing guidance, a dark indicator during this check can mean the headphone battery is at 1% or lower. Charge the case and earbuds, then try again. Use the supplied charging cable if you need to recharge the case.
Confirm that each earbud sits fully in its charging slot. Third-party ear tips can be shaped or sized in a way that prevents an earbud from seating correctly, which can stop it from charging and undermine the pairing check. If an earbud is not making contact, remove and refit the tip or temporarily test with the supplied tip.
2. Restart the playback device and remove its stale Bluetooth record
- Restart the phone, tablet, computer, Walkman, or other device you are trying to use.
- Open that device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Find the saved WF-1000XM6 entry and choose Forget, Delete, or the equivalent command.
- With the old record removed, start the device’s normal Bluetooth pairing process and select the WF-1000XM6 when it appears.
Deleting the old record matters when a device retained incomplete or disconnected pairing information. The exact labels and screen path are controlled by the source device, not by the earbuds.
3. Isolate the source device
Try pairing the earbuds with a second phone, Walkman, computer, or other playback source. If they pair and play normally there, Sony’s guidance treats the first source as the likely point of failure and recommends consulting that device’s manufacturer. This test is more useful than repeatedly resetting the earbuds because it separates a source-specific Bluetooth problem from an earbud problem.
4. Stop an old LE Audio source from taking the connection
If another device previously used the earbuds with LE Audio, temporarily turn Bluetooth off on that device before pairing to the intended source. Sony notes that the WF-1000XM6 can automatically reconnect to a device previously used with LE Audio, making the earbuds appear unavailable to the device you are currently setting up.
5. Reset only after the basic pairing checks
If charging, restarting, deleting the old record, testing another source, and disabling the previous LE Audio source do not help, reset the earbuds. A reset restarts the earbuds while retaining pairing information and other settings. The exact procedure is in the reset section below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches6. Initialize only when reset fails
If pairing still fails after a reset, initialize the earbuds and pair them again. Initialization is a factory reset: it removes all Bluetooth pairing information. Sony Support states, “Initialization returns the headphones to the factory settings and all Bluetooth pairing information is deleted.” After initialization, you must delete the old WF-1000XM6 record from the phone or computer and complete pairing as if the earbuds were new.
If initialization does not restore pairing, and the earbuds also fail with another playback device, Sony’s pairing guidance says the headphones may have malfunctioned and service may be required.
If audio skips or drops out after pairing
Check whether the location is the trigger
Bluetooth can be interrupted by a crowded radio environment. Sony specifically identifies places such as trains and busy roads as possible sources of interference. If skips happen in crowded places but not at home or another quiet location, interference is the likely explanation rather than an immediate hardware conclusion.
- Bring the playback device closer to the earbuds.
- Move to a less congested location and play the same material.
- Keep the phone or computer on the unobstructed side of your body; avoid putting it behind your torso or inside a crowded bag during the test.
A successful test at short range in a quiet area points toward the radio environment or distance. It does not prove a permanent fault in either device.

Set Sony | Sound Connect to prioritize stability
In the Sony | Sound Connect app, open My Device → All device settings → Connection, then set Bluetooth Connection Quality to Prioritize Stable Connection. Sony explains that higher sound quality can increase processing load, so lowering the quality priority can prevent skips.

If the earbuds are currently using LE Audio, switch to Classic Audio before following this troubleshooting sequence. On the playback device, select AAC if its Bluetooth audio options offer a choice between SBC and AAC. The available codec controls depend on the source device and its operating system.
Change one competing connection at a time
Make one change, play audio long enough to reproduce the problem, and record whether it improved. Changing everything simultaneously makes it impossible to identify the trigger.
- Disconnect a second multipoint source that is not in use.
- Turn off Service Link temporarily.
- Do not cover the source device’s Bluetooth antenna with your hand or a metal object.
- Temporarily disconnect other Bluetooth accessories, including a smartwatch.
- If Wi-Fi is active, try a 5 GHz network instead of a congested 2.4 GHz network.
- If Wi-Fi is enabled but not being used, turn it off briefly as a diagnostic test.
- Turn off Adaptive Sound Control and Speak-to-Chat temporarily. A detected movement, voice, or action can otherwise alter playback while you are diagnosing skips.
- Close other apps that may be using audio or Bluetooth, put the earbuds in their case briefly, restart the playback device, and retest at close range.
Use the source-device test if skips continue
Play the same audio from another phone, computer, or Walkman. If the second source is stable while the original source still skips, Sony’s workflow points you toward the original source manufacturer. If the skips occur across sources, continue with a reset, then initialization only if necessary.

A reset is the next step when stable-connection quality, distance, interference isolation, codec selection, and a second source have not solved the problem. If the reset fails, initialize, delete the old pairing record, and pair again. Persistent skips across multiple sources after initialization are a reason to contact Sony service.
If Bluetooth is connected but there is no sound
A connected status does not guarantee that the source is sending audio to the earbuds. Work through these checks before resetting.
- Pause playback and resume it.
- Put both earbuds in the case, close or leave the lid as appropriate for normal charging, then take them out again.
- Raise the source-device volume and verify that the left-right audio balance is centered.
- Check the source’s selected audio output. On a computer, explicitly choose the WF-1000XM6 rather than the built-in speakers, monitor, or another Bluetooth output.
- Move the source closer and test away from crowded radio environments.
- In Sound Connect, select Prioritize Stable Connection under My Device → All device settings → Connection.
- If the connection appears lost even though the device still shows a saved record, forget the WF-1000XM6 and pair it again.
Only after these checks should you proceed to reset, and then to initialization if the reset does not help.
If Sony | Sound Connect cannot connect
The app connection is separate from ordinary Bluetooth playback. If the earbuds play audio but do not appear in Sound Connect, close and reopen the app, confirm that the earbuds are connected to the intended source, and temporarily turn Bluetooth off on another previously used device. Keep the phone close to the earbuds while the app attempts to connect. If the app still cannot connect, forget the WF-1000XM6 in the phone’s Bluetooth settings, pair again, and then retry Sound Connect. App menu names can change with app releases, so use the current labels shown on your phone.

Reset versus initialization: choose the right operation
| Operation | What it does | What happens to pairing | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reset | Restarts the earbuds | Pairing information and other settings are retained | After basic checks fail, before a factory-level operation |
| Initialization | Restores factory settings | All Bluetooth pairing information is deleted | Only after reset and source-device tests fail |
How to reset the WF-1000XM6 without deleting pairings
- Place both earbuds in the charging case.
- Leave the lid open.
- Press and hold the case’s reset button for about 20 seconds or longer.
- The indicator flashes orange after about 15 seconds. Keep holding through that orange flash.
- Release the button only after the indicator turns off.
Sony specifically warns that releasing while the indicator is flashing orange initializes the headphones instead of performing a reset. If the reset completes, retry the original pairing or playback test without first deleting the saved pairing record.
How to initialize the WF-1000XM6 and clear all pairings
- Make sure the case has enough charge; a low case battery can prevent initialization.
- Place both earbuds in the open case.
- Press and hold the case’s initialize button for about 15 seconds or longer.
- When the indicator begins flashing orange, release the button within five seconds.
- Wait for four green flashes, which confirm completion.
- On every phone, computer, or other previously paired source, delete the WF-1000XM6 Bluetooth record.
- Start Bluetooth pairing again and set up the earbuds as a new device.
Initialization is deliberately later in the sequence because it removes every saved Bluetooth relationship. It can clear corrupted pairing data, but it also creates the work of pairing every source again.
Use Classic Audio and LE Audio deliberately
LE Audio and Classic Audio are different Bluetooth connection modes, and Sony’s troubleshooting paths distinguish between them. If the earbuds are using LE Audio while you investigate skips, switch to Classic Audio first, then apply the stable-connection setting and interference checks. Also turn Bluetooth off on a previously used LE Audio device when a new source cannot find or hold the earbuds.
Do not infer that LE Audio is defective from a single failed connection. The useful diagnostic question is whether the behavior changes after switching mode and testing the same source in the same environment.
What each test tells you
| Test result | Most useful interpretation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Earbuds work after charging and reseating | The initial failure was consistent with insufficient charge or poor case contact | Continue normal use and monitor whether the seating issue returns |
| Earbuds work with a second source but not the first | The original phone, computer, or its Bluetooth configuration is implicated | Use that manufacturer’s Bluetooth support; avoid unnecessary earbud initialization |
| Skips occur only in crowded places | Radio interference is the likely trigger | Use closer range, Stable Connection quality, and a less congested environment |
| Skips stop after disconnecting a watch or second multipoint source | Competing Bluetooth traffic was contributing | Reconnect accessories one at a time to identify the combination that causes trouble |
| Failure remains on several sources after initialization | The problem is no longer explained by one stale pairing record | Contact Sony service |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Releasing the reset button during the orange flash. On this model, that timing performs initialization rather than a pairing-preserving reset.
- Leaving a previously paired LE Audio device’s Bluetooth radio on while trying to connect a new source.
- Changing codec, Wi-Fi, multipoint, and app settings all at once. You lose the evidence showing which change mattered.
- Assuming a connected icon means audio is routed correctly. Computers and phones can keep the Bluetooth link while selecting another output.
- Testing only in a train station, busy street, or other crowded location. Always compare with a quiet, short-range test.
- Blaming third-party ear tips without checking actual case contact. The relevant issue is whether each earbud sits and charges correctly.
When to contact Sony service
Contact Sony when the earbuds continue to fail after charging and correct case seating, deleting stale pairing records, testing another source, resetting, and (if necessary) initializing. Sony’s support flow also points to service when initialization does not solve pairing or when skips persist across playback devices.

This information helps distinguish a source-device problem from a problem that follows the earbuds.
Important limits of the troubleshooting advice
Sony’s support articles describe possible causes and recovery steps; they do not establish a published failure rate for WF-1000XM6 pairing or dropouts. A single dropout does not demonstrate a known defect, and successful operation in one environment does not guarantee immunity from interference in another. Apply the symptom-specific tests first, preserve pairing data with a reset when possible, and reserve initialization for cases where the less-destructive steps have failed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why will my WF-1000XM6 not appear in Bluetooth?
Charge the case and both earbuds, ensure they sit correctly in the case, restart the source device, delete the old WF-1000XM6 Bluetooth record, and pair again. Also turn Bluetooth off on any previously used LE Audio device that may be reconnecting automatically.
What is the difference between resetting and initializing the WF-1000XM6?
A reset restarts the earbuds and retains pairing information. Initialization restores factory settings and deletes every Bluetooth pairing, so all sources must be paired again.
How do I stop WF-1000XM6 audio dropouts?
In Sony | Sound Connect, choose My Device → All device settings → Connection → Prioritize Stable Connection. Move the source closer, test away from crowded radio environments, disconnect unused multipoint and Bluetooth devices, and try Classic Audio instead of LE Audio.
Should I use SBC or AAC for fewer skips?
If the source offers the choice, Sony suggests selecting AAC while troubleshooting skips. Codec options depend on the phone, computer, and operating system.
Why does Bluetooth say connected but no sound comes out?
Pause and resume playback, reseat the earbuds in the case, check source volume and left-right balance, and select WF-1000XM6 as the active audio output. Then test closer to the source and use Stable Connection quality.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCan Wi-Fi cause WF-1000XM6 dropouts?
It can contribute to a crowded wireless environment. As a diagnostic, try a 5 GHz Wi-Fi network; if Wi-Fi is enabled but unused, turn it off briefly and retest.
When should I initialize instead of reset?
Initialize only after charging, clearing stale records, testing another source, and performing a reset have failed. Initialization deletes all saved pairings.
When does Sony recommend service?
Service is appropriate when pairing or skips continue across multiple playback devices after reset and, if necessary, initialization.
The Bottom Line
Match the fix to the symptom: charge and reseat the earbuds for pairing failures, clear stale records and isolate the source device, and use Prioritize Stable Connection plus interference checks for dropouts. Reset first because it preserves pairings; initialize only as a later factory-level step. If the problem follows the earbuds across sources after initialization, contact Sony service.
