Most Sony earbud problems are resolved by working through two paths in order: charging hardware first, then Bluetooth pairing. Put both earbuds in the case, confirm the case indicator reacts, reseat each earbud on its contacts, clean the contacts and USB-C port, and charge with the supplied cable. Once the case and earbuds have power, restart your phone or computer, forget the old Bluetooth entry, and pair again. Reset the earbuds before using initialization, because initialization erases every saved pairing.
The instructions below cover WF-1000XM5, WF-1000XM6, WF-C500, WF-C700N and WF-C710N behavior. Button names and indicator patterns vary, so use the model printed on your case when a procedure is model-specific.
Choose the right troubleshooting path
| What you see | Start here | Likely endpoint if it fails |
|---|---|---|
| Case light never responds | Charge the case directly, inspect and clean the USB-C port, then reseat both earbuds. | Service or a replacement case if the indicator still never responds. |
| One earbud is dead or remains at 0% | Remove and reseat that earbud, clean both contact surfaces, and check that it is not sitting high in the case. | Service if the side still will not charge after reset and initialization. |
| Earbuds do not appear in Bluetooth | Restart the playback device, forget the old Sony entry, toggle Bluetooth, and pair with the earbuds close by. | Model-specific reset, then initialization if reset does not restore discovery. |
| Connection drops after pairing | Remove remembered Sony entries from nearby devices and pair with only the intended device active. | Reset or initialize after charging and cleaning checks. |
| Sony | Sound Connect cannot find working earbuds | Update the app, restart the phone, place the earbuds in the case once, and run the model reset procedure. | Initialization or Sony service if the app and Bluetooth both fail. |
This symptom-based approach prevents a common mistake: repeatedly changing Bluetooth settings when the earbuds are actually uncharged or not making contact in the case. The indicator, physical seating and power source provide the first evidence. Bluetooth and app work comes afterward.

Fix charging before troubleshooting Bluetooth
Bluetooth pairing cannot succeed reliably when the case or either earbud is below charge. Sony’s support procedures begin by checking the physical charging path, and the case indicator is the quickest way to tell whether power is reaching the system.

Check the case indicator and power source
- Put both earbuds in the case and close the lid briefly, then open it. Confirm that the case indicator lights or shows the expected charging state.
- Connect the case directly to a computer USB port or a USB AC adapter with the supplied USB-C cable. Avoid diagnosing a Bluetooth fault while the case itself is empty.
- If you use wireless charging on a WF-1000XM5, position the case correctly with the SONY logo facing upward. Misalignment can prevent charging even when the charger appears active.
- Leave the case connected long enough to establish a charge before trying discovery or reset. An indicator that reacts only intermittently can indicate a loose cable, dirty port or depleted battery.
If the indicator never lights while connected to a known-good USB source, continue with the cleaning and seating checks below. A case that cannot show any charging response may have a hardware fault rather than a pairing problem.
Reseat each earbud on its contacts
Remove both earbuds and place them back individually. Each one must sit fully down on its charging contacts; an earbud floating high in the case may neither charge nor enter pairing mode. Check the side that remains dead for an uneven fit, debris around the contact area, or an ear tip that prevents the earbud from settling.
Compare the working and non-working sides rather than assuming the battery is bad. The affected earbud should sit at the same height and angle as the other one. Close and reopen the lid after reseating, then watch for a case response. If an earbud appears connected to the phone but its battery remains empty, suspect a blocked or dirty charging contact first.
Clean the contacts and USB-C port safely
- Disconnect the case from power.
- Use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the metal contacts on each earbud and the matching contacts inside the case.
- Wipe dust from the case USB-C port with the same type of dry cloth. Do not push liquid, metal tools or sharp objects into the port.
- Check the earbud wells for anything that keeps an earbud from sitting low enough to touch the contacts.
- Reseat the earbuds and reconnect the cable to check whether the indicator now responds.
Dirty or obstructed contacts can make an earbud appear connected while its battery remains empty. Cleaning is therefore a charging fix, not merely cosmetic maintenance. Do not scrape contacts or flood the case with cleaner; the safe check described by Sony uses a soft, dry cloth.
Respect the WF-C500 temperature range
For WF-C500, Sony specifies an ambient charging range of 15–35 °C. Move the case into that range before testing again. If it still will not charge, Sony’s sequence is to clean the port, reset the earbuds, initialize them, and seek repair if charging does not return.
When only one side will not charge
Compare the physical seating of the working and non-working sides. Remove the affected earbud, inspect its contact surfaces, and place it back with gentle pressure until it sits level. Then leave both earbuds in the case while the case is connected to power. If the case indicator reacts but that side remains empty after these checks, software recovery may help; persistent failure after reset and initialization points to a contact, battery or other hardware problem.
Do not infer that the phone’s left/right battery display proves the earbud is charging. Confirm the case response and physical contact first. If the case itself cannot retain charge, an earbud reset cannot repair that power path.
Repair Bluetooth discovery and pairing
Once the case and earbuds have charge, follow this order. Changing several settings at once makes it difficult to tell which step fixed the problem.
- Restart the playback device. Power-cycle the phone, tablet, computer or other device that should play audio. This clears a Bluetooth process that may be stuck even though Bluetooth is shown as enabled.
- Delete the old Bluetooth record. Open the device’s Bluetooth settings, select the Sony earbuds entry, and choose Forget, Remove or Delete this device. The exact label depends on the operating system. Remove duplicate or outdated Sony entries as well.
- Toggle Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off, wait a few seconds, turn it on again, and keep the earbuds close to the device while pairing.
- Pair again. Open the case with both earbuds inside and select the Sony entry when it appears. Keep other previously paired phones, tablets and computers from automatically taking the connection during this step.
- Reset the earbuds if they still do not appear. Use the model procedure in the next section. Reset is the first software recovery step.
- Initialize only if reset fails. Initialization returns the earbuds to factory defaults and deletes all pairing information, so remove any old Sony record from the playback device and pair from scratch afterward.
Sony’s WF-1000XM6 support flow follows this escalation: restart, delete Bluetooth information, pair again, reset, then initialize. WF-C710N and WF-C700N guidance also emphasizes clean contacts and correct seating because earbuds that are not charging correctly may not enter pairing mode.
Why the earbuds still do not show up
If no Sony name appears after Bluetooth is toggled, first verify that both earbuds are seated and the case has charge. A floating earbud may not enter pairing mode at all. Keep the playback device close to the open case and temporarily turn Bluetooth off on nearby devices. A remembered phone or computer can capture the connection before the device in your hand sees it.
Reset Sony WF-1000XM5 and WF-1000XM6 earbuds
Reset: the non-destructive recovery step
For WF-1000XM5 and WF-1000XM6, place both earbuds in the charging case and leave the lid open. Hold the case reset control for about 20 seconds. Release only after the indicator shows the sequence that confirms the reset. A reset normally preserves pairing information, but you should still try pairing again after the reset if the device was previously stuck on an old connection.
The exact control and indicator sequence can differ between models and regional revisions. Use the support instructions for the model number printed on your case rather than applying a WF-1000XM5 sequence to another Sony series. Keep the case connected to power if the model instructions require a charged case, and do not substitute a touch-control sequence from a different model.

Initialize: the factory-reset step
Initialization is more drastic than reset. Sony states: “IMPORTANT: The initialize operation resets all the device settings to the factory defaults and deletes all pairing information.” Save this step for a failed reset or a persistent pairing record that cannot be cleared normally.
- Place both earbuds in the case and leave the lid open.
- Hold the case control for roughly 15 seconds.
- When the indicator begins flashing orange, release the control within five seconds.
- Four green flashes confirm completion on the WF-1000XM5/WF-1000XM6 case procedure.
- On the phone or computer, delete any remaining Sony Bluetooth entry, then start a new pairing.
Initialization will not start if the case does not have sufficient remaining charge. Sony specifically notes that when the charging case’s remaining battery is insufficient, the headphones will not start initializing. Charge the case first if the indicator sequence never begins, and do not repeatedly hold the control on an empty case.
Because initialization removes every saved pairing, plan to reconnect the earbuds to each phone, tablet or computer you still use. It is not a routine fix for a single dropped connection; use restart, deletion of the old record and reset first.

On WF-C710N, three repeating orange flashes indicate that the left and right earbuds are paired incorrectly with each other. Sony recommends initialization followed by fresh pairing. Complete the case initialization, remove the old Bluetooth record from the playback device, and pair the two earbuds as a new set. Do not treat this pattern as proof that the case battery is empty; use the model’s indicator meaning and initialization procedure.
Stop repeated disconnections
Remove competing remembered devices
A Sony earbud can reconnect to a previously paired phone, tablet or computer before the device you are currently using gets a chance. Turn Bluetooth off on nearby devices you are not using, remove stale Sony entries where necessary, and pair with only the intended playback device active. This is especially important immediately after a reset or initialization.
If the drop occurs only when another device is nearby, the competing remembered connection is a stronger suspect than a failed earbud. Once pairing is stable, re-enable Bluetooth on the other devices one at a time and remove any entry that repeatedly takes the connection.
Use a clean restart after an intermittent drop
If the earbuds connect and then drop repeatedly, put both earbuds in the case once to restart them, close and reopen the lid, and pair again after the playback device has been restarted. If the behavior continues, run the reset procedure for your model. Initialization is the final software step because it removes all saved pairings.

If the case indicator, charging and Bluetooth record are all normal but repeated drops continue after initialization, move to Sony support rather than endlessly repeating the same sequence.
When Sony | Sound Connect does not detect the earbuds
Bluetooth audio can work while Sony’s companion app fails to list the earbuds. Update Sony | Sound Connect to its current release, restart the phone, and place both earbuds in the case once so they restart. Open the app again and follow the model-specific reset guide if detection does not return.
If the app still cannot see the earbuds after a reset, delete the phone’s Bluetooth record and pair again; initialize only after those steps have failed. This separates an app-detection problem from a case, contact or radio problem. If ordinary Bluetooth pairing also fails, return to the charging and reset sequence instead of reinstalling the app repeatedly.
If the problem occurs only on Windows
First apply the same hardware and Bluetooth sequence: charge and clean the case, forget the Sony entry, restart Windows, toggle Bluetooth and pair again. If other Bluetooth devices also fail on that computer, check Windows’ built-in Bluetooth and chipset-driver updates. Optional driver-maintenance utilities, including Outbyte’s PC Repair or Driver Updater products, may help with a Windows driver-management problem, but they are not Sony software, are not endorsed by Sony, and cannot repair a damaged earbud, battery or charging case.

Ear tips for WF-1000XM5
Sony identifies the EP-NI1010 series as a separately sold replacement for damaged or lost WF-1000XM5 ear tips. Replace deteriorated tips because they can reduce sound and noise-canceling performance and may detach in the ear. A new tip will not fix a charging-contact or Bluetooth fault, but it can correct a poor seal after the electronics are working.

WF-1000XM5 charging case or individual earbud
For an authorized WF-1000XM5 charging-case replacement, Sony directs customers to Encompass. Its catalog lists model-specific black and platinum-silver cases and individual earbuds. Match the replacement to the exact model and color designation; a case intended for another Sony series is not a substitute. Check the model printed on the case before ordering, especially when choosing between a complete case and a single earbud.
Know when troubleshooting is over
Move to Sony support or an authorized repair path after you have charged with the supplied cable, cleaned and reseated the earbuds, deleted the Bluetooth record, reset, and initialized. Stop repeating initialization when the case cannot hold charge or its indicator never responds. Those symptoms indicate that further software resets are unlikely to restore a failed battery, charging circuit or other hardware.
There is no published success-rate or failure-rate figure that can predict whether another reset will work. Use the observable endpoint instead: a responding indicator, clean contact, successful discovery and stable pairing. If one of those never returns after the full sequence, service or a model-specific replacement is the practical next step.
Final checklist
- Both earbuds sit fully on clean charging contacts.
- The case responds when connected to direct USB power, or is correctly positioned on a compatible wireless charger.
- WF-C500 charging tests are performed between 15 and 35 °C.
- The supplied USB-C cable and a direct computer USB port or USB AC adapter have been tried.
- The playback device has been restarted and the old Sony Bluetooth record removed.
- Nearby previously paired devices are not taking the connection.
- Reset was attempted before initialization.
- After initialization, the old Bluetooth record was deleted and pairing was started again.
- Sony | Sound Connect was updated and the phone restarted if the app failed to detect working earbuds.
- Persistent no-indicator or no-charge behavior has been referred to Sony or an authorized repair service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my Sony earbuds show up in Bluetooth?
Charge the case, reseat both earbuds on clean contacts, restart the phone or computer, forget the old Sony entry, toggle Bluetooth and pair with the earbuds nearby. If they still do not appear, use the model-specific reset, then initialize only if reset fails.
Why is one Sony earbud not charging?
Remove and reseat the affected earbud, inspect its contact surfaces and check that it is not sitting high in the case. Clean the earbud and case contacts with a soft, dry cloth. If that side remains empty after reset and initialization, service may be needed.
Does resetting Sony earbuds erase Bluetooth pairings?
A reset is the first, normally non-destructive recovery step and generally keeps pairing information. Initialization is different: it restores factory settings and deletes all pairing information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I initialize WF-1000XM5 or WF-1000XM6 earbuds?
With both earbuds in the open case, hold the case control for roughly 15 seconds. When the indicator starts flashing orange, release within five seconds; four green flashes confirm completion on this case procedure. Delete the old Bluetooth entry and pair again. The case must have sufficient charge.
What do three repeating orange flashes mean on WF-C710N?
Sony identifies this pattern as the left and right earbuds being paired incorrectly with each other. Initialize the earbuds, remove the old Bluetooth record and complete fresh pairing.
Why do my Sony earbuds keep disconnecting?
A nearby phone, tablet or computer may be taking the connection. Turn Bluetooth off on unused nearby devices, remove stale Sony entries and pair with only the intended device active. Restart the playback device and earbuds, then reset if drops continue.
Why does Sony | Sound Connect not find earbuds that play audio?
Update the app, restart the phone, put both earbuds in the case once to restart them, and follow the model reset guide. If detection still fails, delete the phone’s Bluetooth record and pair again; initialize only after those steps.

When should I stop troubleshooting and seek service?
Seek Sony or authorized service when the case never responds to direct USB charging, cannot hold charge, or charging, cleaning, Bluetooth deletion, reset and initialization all fail. Repeating initialization cannot repair a failed battery, charging circuit or other hardware.
The Bottom Line
Start with power: use the supplied cable, verify the case indicator, clean and reseat both earbuds, and keep WF-C500 charging between 15 and 35 °C. Then restart the playback device, forget the stale Sony Bluetooth record, toggle Bluetooth and pair with nearby earbuds while competing devices are inactive. Reset before initialization; initialization is the factory-reset step that erases every pairing. If the indicator never responds or the complete sequence fails, use Sony’s authorized service or replacement-part route.
