Start with the smallest, most reversible check: determine whether one device or several are affected, then verify power, hub status, range and network access. Re-pair a device only after those checks. Treat a hub factory reset as a last resort because it can remove stored device connections, and follow the reset procedure for your exact model and region.

1. Identify whether the problem is local or widespread

The scope of the failure determines where to start. A single offline sensor usually points to its battery, power, radio path or pairing. Several devices becoming unavailable at once points more strongly to the hub, router, SmartThings app or SmartThings service.

What you see Most useful first checks Do not do first
One device shows Offline Power or battery, distance from the hub, obstructions, device-specific status and pairing Reset the hub or every other device
Several devices on one hub fail together Hub power and indicator, router connection, local network and SmartThings service status Remove and re-add each device individually
Only Wi-Fi or LAN devices fail Phone and device network membership, router access and the manufacturer’s native app Assume the hub radio is defective
Automations and device control fail across the installation Hub, router, app and platform-status checks Factory-reset the hub before checking service status

When multiple devices fail, check Samsung’s live SmartThings platform-status page. It reports areas such as hub connectivity, mobile-app connectivity and device control. A service incident can make healthy devices appear offline; resetting them during an incident creates unnecessary work.

2. Check the device’s power source

Plug-in devices

  1. Confirm the device’s physical switch is on and that any safety switch or power strip has not been turned off.
  2. Unplug the device for about two minutes.
  3. Reconnect it, preferably to a known-good outlet. If practical, test another outlet to rule out a local power problem.
  4. Allow the device time to boot before checking SmartThings again. Some products take longer than a simple indicator light to rejoin the network.

Do not buy a battery for a mains-powered device. If another appliance also fails on the same outlet, resolve the electrical issue before troubleshooting SmartThings.

Battery-powered sensors and buttons

  1. Open the battery compartment and verify that the battery is seated with the correct polarity.
  2. Remove the battery briefly, then reinsert it.
  3. Replace it if it is depleted or the device reports a low-battery condition.
  4. Read the product label or manual before purchasing a replacement. Battery chemistry and size vary by model; a replacement that fits physically may still be unsuitable.

A dead or mis-seated battery can leave the device looking offline even while the SmartThings app and hub are operating normally. After restoring power, trigger the sensor or press its button once and wait for a status update.

3. Inspect the hub before changing device settings

Confirm power and indicator behavior

Make sure the hub’s power cable is firmly connected and that the outlet or adapter is working. Check the hub’s LED and compare its behavior with the instructions for your model.

Samsung’s US guidance says a flashing or solid magenta LED indicates an update. Do not unplug, reboot or factory-reset the hub while that update is in progress. Interrupting an update can create a second problem on top of the original offline status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the number of failed devices as a diagnostic

If many devices stopped responding at the same time, leave their pairings alone while you check the hub and router. A hub reboot normally refreshes operation without deleting stored device settings, but the exact reboot method depends on the hub model. Use the model-specific instructions rather than holding random buttons.

4. Improve range and reduce wireless interference

Run a short-range test

  1. Move the offline device temporarily closer to the hub.
  2. Remove obvious barriers such as metal cabinets, thick masonry, appliances or tightly packed electrical equipment where possible.
  3. Trigger the device or send a control command.
  4. If it responds near the hub but not in its original location, the fault is the radio path rather than the device’s SmartThings entry.

Restore the device to its normal location only after the test. A successful close-range response does not prove that the original location will remain reliable; distance, wall materials and household interference can change the result.

Place the hub deliberately

Keep the hub away from the router and other wireless electronics where practicable. Separating them can reduce local interference and makes it easier to identify which radio path is failing.

Use Wi-Fi channel changes only as a targeted test

For Zigbee troubleshooting, Samsung’s US guidance suggests trying Wi-Fi channel 1, 6 or 11. This is not a universal best setting: the useful choice depends on the Zigbee channel, nearby networks and the router’s interface. Change one setting at a time, record the original value, and retest the affected device before making additional changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Samsung’s France guidance also emphasizes reducing distance and obstacles. It notes that removing a device that acts as a Zigbee repeater can affect other devices, so do not remove a seemingly unrelated powered device while diagnosing a coverage problem unless you understand its role in the mesh.

5. Troubleshoot Wi-Fi and LAN devices separately

A Wi-Fi device can be offline even when the hub and SmartThings app are healthy. Its discovery and control path includes the router, local network, device firmware and sometimes the manufacturer’s native app.

Verify local-network membership

  1. Put the phone and the device on the same local network during discovery. Guest networks, client isolation and separate VLANs can prevent discovery.
  2. Confirm that the device has joined the intended Wi-Fi network rather than an old or similarly named network.
  3. If setup redirects to the manufacturer’s app, finish the process there before returning to SmartThings.
  4. Restart the device, the native app and the phone, then try discovery again.

If the product supports Ethernet, Samsung suggests testing a direct connection to the router. A successful wired test narrows the fault to Wi-Fi coverage, wireless configuration or credentials rather than the SmartThings account.

When several LAN devices fail

Check the router and local network before resetting individual endpoints. A changed DHCP arrangement, an isolated guest network, a router outage or an app sign-in problem can affect every LAN device at once. Repeatedly resetting one device will not repair a shared network fault.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Update Wi-Fi credentials after a router or password change

Changing the Wi-Fi name or password breaks the saved network path for devices that use those credentials. Some products let you change Wi-Fi information from SmartThings. Open the affected device’s settings and look for the Wi-Fi-information option available for that model.

If SmartThings does not offer that option, follow the device’s own reset-and-reconnect instructions. The reset procedure, button timing and whether the device retains other settings vary by product. Do not substitute a generic reset sequence from another model.

7. Update the apps and device software

  1. Check the SmartThings app store listing for an available update.
  2. Open the device manufacturer’s native app, if one is required, and check it for updates or pending setup steps.
  3. Install any device or hub firmware update offered through the supported app.
  4. After updates finish, send a simple control command and wait for the resulting status.

An app that opens successfully can still be unable to control a device if the device’s native setup is incomplete or its local network path is broken. Keep the app, phone operating system and device firmware current before escalating to re-pairing.

8. Remove and re-add one device only when necessary

Re-pairing is appropriate when power, range, network and software checks do not restore a single device. It is more disruptive than a power cycle because it can remove device-specific settings and automation references.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record the device name, room, automation use and any settings you need to recreate.
  2. Open SmartThings and remove only the affected device.
  3. Perform the model-specific reset or exclusion procedure. Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi products do not share one universal reset method.
  4. Start the Add device flow and follow the on-screen instructions for the exact brand, model and region.
  5. For a Bluetooth product, also unpair it from the phone’s Bluetooth settings if the manufacturer requires that step.
  6. Wait for setup to complete, rename the device if needed, restore room and automation assignments, and send a control command.

Third-party products can require brand-specific sequences. If a compatible device still will not pair or respond after the documented procedure, consult that product’s manufacturer.

9. Understand reboot, re-pair and factory reset

Action What it changes When to use it
Power cycle or hub reboot Refreshes operation; a normal reboot generally preserves settings After a temporary lock-up, update completion or connectivity interruption
Remove and add a device Recreates the device connection and may require restoring room or automation assignments One device remains offline after reversible checks
Hub factory reset Restores defaults and can remove stored data such as device connections Only after model-specific support guidance and a plan to rebuild the installation

Samsung Canada distinguishes a reboot from a factory reset: a factory reset restores defaults and removes data such as device connections. The available buttons, menus and timing vary by hub model and sales region. Do not begin with a factory reset merely because one sensor is offline.

10. Use a connection-specific decision path

Battery, Zigbee or Z-Wave device

  • Check battery seating or replace the depleted battery with the specified type.
  • Move the device near the hub and test.
  • Reduce obstacles and consider interference.
  • Check whether another powered device that may act as a repeater was removed.
  • Re-pair only after those checks fail.

Wi-Fi or LAN device

  • Confirm the phone and device are on the same local network during discovery.
  • Complete any required setup in the native app.
  • Check router operation, credentials and network isolation.
  • Test Ethernet if the product supports it.
  • Update Wi-Fi information or reset and reconnect when the password or network name changed.

Several device types fail together

  • Check the hub’s power and LED.
  • Do not interrupt a magenta hub update.
  • Check the router and internet path.
  • Review SmartThings platform status for hub connectivity, mobile-app connectivity and device control.
  • Only after shared causes are excluded should you troubleshoot devices one by one.

11. What to record before contacting support

Good records prevent repeated resets and help support identify the failing layer. Note:

12. Common mistakes that prolong an offline-device problem

Resetting everything because one sensor is offline

A single dead battery or weak radio path does not justify a hub reset. Broad resets erase useful information and may create new pairing work.

Interrupting a hub update

A flashing or solid magenta LED can indicate an update. Leave the hub connected until the update completes according to its model instructions.

Changing several network settings at once

If you change the Wi-Fi channel, router security, SSID and device credentials together, you cannot tell which change helped or caused a new fault. Make one controlled change, test, and record the result.

Using the wrong battery

Physical fit is not enough. Confirm the battery type on the label or in the manual before buying replacements.

13. When a factory reset is justified

Consider a hub factory reset only when the installation remains unusable after confirming power, updates, router operation, platform status and model-specific recovery steps, and when Samsung support or the hub documentation directs you to reset. Prepare an inventory of devices, rooms and automations first. Expect to add devices again and restore configuration that the reset removes.

Because a factory reset is destructive, schedule it when you can rebuild the installation and verify each device. If the service status page shows an active platform incident, wait for service recovery instead of erasing a working configuration.

14. Regional instructions and dates matter

Samsung’s support pages do not always show identical menus or reset steps. The France article was last updated May 15, 2026; Samsung Canada’s hub reboot and reset guide was updated May 8, 2024; and Samsung Australia’s offline-device page was updated February 29, 2024. Those dates identify the guidance versions, not a guarantee that every model has the same interface.

Use the support page for your country, hub model and device model whenever instructions conflict. Hardware availability, app labels and reset controls can differ by region.

15. The practical order of operations

  1. Count the affected devices.
  2. Check SmartThings platform status if several devices or automations fail.
  3. Verify the affected device’s power or battery.
  4. Inspect hub power and LED behavior; do not interrupt an update.
  5. Test the device close to the hub and reduce interference.
  6. For Wi-Fi or LAN products, verify local-network membership, native-app setup and router health.
  7. Update Wi-Fi credentials if the network name or password changed.
  8. Update SmartThings and any native app.
  9. Remove and re-add only the device that still fails, using its exact reset instructions.
  10. Reserve a hub factory reset for documented, last-resort recovery.

Samsung Support US summarizes the issue this way: “If a smart device’s status remains in a specific state, shows as Offline, or fails to respond to actions, you can attempt to check the power supply to your hub, perform a reset, or follow additional troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.” The sequence above applies that advice from least destructive to most disruptive while separating device, network, hub and service causes.
