If a smart-home device stopped connecting, syncing, streaming, pairing, or responding immediately after you changed Pi-hole blocking, do not start by allowlisting the vendor’s entire domain. Reproduce the failure while watching Pi-hole’s Query Log, identify a blocked lookup from the affected client, verify which rule blocked it, and test one exact domain at a time. Remove an exception that does not restore the failed function.
There is no device-independent list of domains that every smart-home product needs. The correct exception depends on the manufacturer, model, firmware, feature, network path, and the lookup actually seen in your log.
Start with evidence, not a blanket allowlist
Domain blocking can break a cloud-dependent feature, but the timing alone does not prove that Pi-hole caused the outage. A firmware change, expired account session, weak Wi-Fi connection, vendor outage, clock error, or a device using another DNS resolver can produce the same symptom.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The safest workflow is deliberately narrow:
- Confirm the device is using the Pi-hole resolver.
- Trigger the exact function that fails.
- Filter the Query Log to the device and the failure time.
- Find a blocked lookup that plausibly belongs to that function.
- Inspect the rule or list responsible.
- Allowlist only that exact domain, then retry.
- Delete the exception if the feature still fails.
Pi-hole’s real-time query logging is intended for this kind of troubleshooting. Its domain-query function can show whether a name appears in exact allowlists, denylists, wildcard rules, or subscribed lists. Use the command syntax documented for your installed Pi-hole release because the CLI has changed between versions.

Separate a DNS symptom from a device symptom
Write down what “not working” means before changing anything. A device that appears offline in an app may still respond to a local-LAN command. A camera may pair successfully but fail only when its cloud relay is used. A speaker may play local media while account sign-in or firmware checking fails. These are different tests with different DNS dependencies.
Capture the exact error message, whether the failure is consistent, and whether another phone or computer can reach the vendor service. This gives you a baseline for comparing the result after one rule change instead of treating any later success as proof.
Confirm the device is actually using Pi-hole
A query cannot appear in Pi-hole if the device sends DNS somewhere else. First, identify the client address shown by your router or Pi-hole and compare it with the device you are testing. A device may have a DHCP address that changes, use IPv6 as well as IPv4, or appear under a hostname that Pi-hole cannot resolve.
Check the network path
- In the router’s DHCP or LAN settings, verify that Pi-hole is advertised as the DNS server.
- On the device, inspect its network details if the interface exposes DNS addresses.
- Check Pi-hole’s dashboard for recent queries from the client’s IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
- If the device has a guest-network or isolated-VLAN connection, verify that segment also uses Pi-hole.
- Check whether a second access point, mesh node, VPN, or security gateway is issuing its own DNS settings.
Do not change blocking rules until a test lookup from the device reaches Pi-hole. You can trigger a harmless action such as opening the device’s app, refreshing its status, or starting the specific stream or sync that fails, then watch for a new query from the matching client.
Record both address families where possible. Seeing queries from an IPv4 address does not prove that a later IPv6 connection followed the same path. Conversely, an apparent lack of IPv6 entries may simply mean that the device made the test request over IPv4.
Reproduce the exact failure in Query Log
Open Pi-hole’s web interface and go to Query Log. Set the time range to begin shortly before the test, filter by the affected client, and trigger only one failed function. For example, test pairing separately from video playback; otherwise dozens of unrelated lookups make attribution difficult.
Record the useful fields
For each suspicious entry, note:
- The full queried domain, including its subdomain.
- The timestamp and whether the request was IPv4 or IPv6-related.
- The client address or hostname Pi-hole displayed.
- The result status, such as blocked, allowed, cached, or forwarded.
- The blocking source named by the current Pi-hole interface.
- Whether the same name appears repeatedly during retries or only once.
A blocked name seen from the right client during the failed action is a lead, not proof. Some products prefetch telemetry, advertising, update, and analytics names at the same time. The name must plausibly relate to the feature that failed before you create an exception.
Recommended Free Tools
Run the test more than once if the operation is intermittent. Keep the interval short and avoid opening unrelated apps, because a shared phone or household client can generate queries that obscure the device’s activity. If the query is cached, the second attempt may not generate a new upstream lookup; the client-side event and the original log entry still need to be correlated by time.

Find the rule that blocked the domain
Inspect the source shown beside the query and then review the corresponding configuration. Check exact deny entries, subscribed blocklists, wildcard entries, and regular-expression rules. A broad regex or list may be matching a name that looks harmless when viewed alone.
Use Pi-hole’s domain-query function for each candidate name. It helps distinguish an exact entry from a wildcard, regex, or subscribed-list match and prevents you from guessing which list to edit. If several lists match, keep a note of all reported sources before changing anything; deleting one list entry may not remove the block if another rule still applies.
Understand Pi-hole’s rule precedence
Pi-hole’s official Regex Blocking documentation, dated July 17, 2025, states: “Allowlisting always has priority over denylisting.” The documented evaluation order is:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Exact allowlist
- Regex allowlist
- Exact denylist
- Subscribed allowlists
- Subscribed denylists
- Regex denylist
This order explains why an exact allow entry can override a matching deny rule. It does not make a broad allow rule safe: a regex or parent-domain exception can also permit unrelated names. Prefer the smallest exact name that is supported by the failed request.
Which domains do I allowlist in Pi-hole?
Allowlist the exact blocked domain that is both visible in the log and relevant to the failed feature. Do not copy a generic “smart-home domains” list. Manufacturers use different cloud providers, regional hostnames, firmware endpoints, certificate services, content-delivery networks, and account systems; the required names can change with model and firmware.
A hostname that appears during setup may not be the one needed for daily control. Similarly, a telemetry name that is blocked at the same moment as a failed stream may be incidental. Treat the function, timestamp, client, and blocking source as a four-part test before allowing anything.
Make one narrow change
- Open Pi-hole’s domain management or allowlist screen.
- Add the exact fully qualified domain shown in the blocked query.
- Do not add the vendor’s top-level domain, an entire country-code domain, or a wildcard unless the log and the product’s documentation establish that scope is necessary.
- Save or apply the rule.
- Clear the device’s pending operation, wait for DNS cache expiry if necessary, and retry the same function.
If the feature works, document why that domain was needed, when you added it, and which device uses it. If the feature does not work, remove the entry before testing another hypothesis. Leaving ineffective exceptions in place slowly erodes your blocking policy and makes later diagnosis harder.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not change a blocklist and add an allowlist entry in the same test. Two simultaneous changes make the result ambiguous and can hide the original cause. Keep a short change record so you can restore the prior state if the device later behaves differently.

Test whether the problem is DNS or something else
A blocked lookup is only one possible cause. If an exact exception changes nothing, test the other dependencies without adding more domains.
Cloud service or local function?
Some controls work locally on the LAN; others require a vendor account, remote API, push-notification service, time service, or media-delivery endpoint. A local light command that fails only when remote access is enabled points to a different dependency than a camera stream that is delivered through a cloud relay. Identify the failed function, not merely the device category.
Connectivity and time
- Confirm the device has a valid IP address, gateway, and Wi-Fi association.
- Check whether its system clock is correct; invalid time can make TLS certificates appear expired.
- Verify that the account is signed in and that the vendor service is reachable from another network.
- Look for repeated connection attempts, authentication errors, or firmware-update prompts in the device app.
- Check whether the product is in a setup, recovery, or maintenance mode that changes its normal network behavior.
Cache and propagation
A device or local resolver may cache a previous DNS answer. After changing a rule, give the client time to retry, restart only the affected network service if the product permits it, and then reproduce the same action. Do not interpret a one-time successful retry as proof unless the feature remains reliable.

Avoid repeatedly rebooting every household device; isolate the test to the affected client whenever possible.
If the device’s query never appears in Pi-hole
An empty filtered log has two broad explanations: the device did not make the expected request during your test, or the request bypassed Pi-hole.
Check for a different resolver
Some smart-home products have used hard-coded public DNS servers instead of the resolver supplied by the home gateway. A study by M. Hammad Mazhar and Zubair Shafiq, published March 31, 2020, observed traffic from more than 200 homes in a U.S. metropolitan area and 1,237 devices across 66 types. In that sample, 98% of smart assistants accessed Google DNS servers and 72% of smart TVs used hard-coded Google DNS. Those historical observations do not establish that your current model bypasses Pi-hole.
Check the client and router configuration before changing allowlists. If the device uses encrypted DNS, a built-in VPN, a separate VLAN policy, or a hard-coded resolver, its lookups may not be visible in Pi-hole. A router with per-device DNS policy can be an optional network-management approach, but it is not required for the domain-rule diagnosis.
Verify the expected request
- Trigger the exact operation several times while watching the log.
- Check both the device’s IPv4 and IPv6 identities.
- Look for CNAME-related names or a different hostname than the one shown in the app.
- Compare a successful local action with the failed remote or cloud action.
- Confirm that the client filter is not using an old address after DHCP reassignment.
If no request reaches Pi-hole, adding domains to its allowlist cannot repair that path. Resolve the DNS-routing issue or investigate the non-DNS failure instead.

Use historical traffic figures carefully
The 2020 study is useful context for why a missing Pi-hole query deserves investigation, not a diagnosis of any particular product. It also reported that 20% of traffic for smart assistants, smart TVs, and health or wearable devices in its sample used HTTP, and that hostnames associated with known advertising or tracking services represented 5.9% of smart-TV hostnames, 3.1% of game-console hostnames, and 2.9% of smart-assistant hostnames. These are study-specific measurements, not current rates for all devices, and a blocked name in your log is not automatically a tracker.
Choose the least disruptive recovery method
When a device fails, compare the available changes by evidence, scope, and privacy impact rather than by convenience alone.
| Approach | Use it when | Scope | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exact-domain allowlist | The blocked lookup is visible from the affected client and matches the failed feature. | One name, with allow priority over matching deny rules. | Preserves most blocking while restoring a demonstrated dependency. |
| Regex or parent-domain allowlist | Only when documentation or repeated evidence proves several changing subdomains are required. | Many names under a pattern or domain family. | Higher chance of permitting unrelated telemetry or services. |
| Temporarily pause blocking for a controlled test | You need to determine whether DNS filtering is involved and can monitor the short test. | Potentially the whole network or client, depending on your Pi-hole controls. | Useful diagnostically but weak as a permanent privacy and security setting. |
| Per-device DNS policy on the router | A device bypasses Pi-hole or needs a different resolver policy. | Selected clients or network segments. | Requires router support and can reduce centralized visibility. |
| No rule change | The query is absent, the exception does not help, or the feature is clearly failing for another reason. | None. | Preserves the existing policy while you investigate connectivity, account, firmware, or service status. |
A temporary pause should be a controlled comparison, not the default repair. Apply it only to the smallest available scope, perform the same failed operation, and restore blocking immediately afterward. If the operation still fails with blocking paused, stop expanding allowlists: the cause is elsewhere or the device is not using Pi-hole.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsAsk for device details before sharing a domain list
Any supposedly universal list is suspect without these details:
- Manufacturer and exact model number.
- Firmware version and, if relevant, mobile-app version.
- The precise failed function: onboarding, sign-in, remote control, streaming, notifications, synchronization, or update.
- Whether local control still works.
- The time of the failure and the client address shown in Pi-hole.
- The blocked domain and the rule or list that matched it.
- Whether the device is on the main LAN, guest network, or an isolated segment.
With those facts, you can compare the observed name with current manufacturer documentation and decide whether an exact exception is justified. Without them, naming domains would be guesswork.

A repeatable troubleshooting checklist
- Write down the model, firmware, and exact failed function.
- Confirm the device’s DNS path and identify its current IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.
- Open Pi-hole’s Query Log and filter by that client and a narrow time window.
- Trigger the failure once, without performing unrelated actions.
- Record blocked names and the matching rule source.
- Use Pi-hole’s domain-query function to inspect how each candidate is classified.
- Allowlist one exact, evidence-backed domain.
- Retry the identical function and observe whether the result changes.
- Keep the exception only if it restores the function reliably; otherwise remove it.
- If no query appears, investigate DNS bypass, IPv6, encrypted DNS, connectivity, authentication, time, firmware, and service availability.
- Redact private information before asking others to review the log.
When to stop changing Pi-hole rules
Stop adding exceptions when the blocked lookup is unrelated to the failed action, when the device never queries Pi-hole, or when an exact allowlist entry produces no improvement. At that point, more permissive DNS rules increase exposure without addressing the cause. Revert experimental changes, capture the error message and timing, and continue with the device’s network, account, firmware, or vendor-service diagnostics.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know Pi-hole caused the smart-home failure?
Reproduce one failed function while filtering Query Log to the correct client and time. A blocked lookup that appears during the failure and plausibly serves that function is evidence. If no query appears, check DNS bypass, IPv6, connectivity, account status, firmware, and vendor availability instead of assuming Pi-hole is responsible.
Which domains do I allowlist in Pi-hole?
Allowlist only the exact blocked fully qualified domain that matches the failed function. There is no universal smart-home domain list. Manufacturer, model, firmware, region, cloud provider, and feature determine the required hostname.
Why did an allowlist entry not fix the device?
The blocked name may be unrelated, another rule may still block a required hostname, the device may cache DNS results, or the failure may not be DNS-related. Remove the ineffective exception, repeat the test, and inspect the complete client and time window.
Can I allowlist the whole vendor domain?
Avoid doing so unless current product documentation and repeated log evidence show that multiple changing subdomains are required. A parent-domain or regex exception can permit unrelated telemetry, advertising, updates, or account services. Start with one exact name.
What if the device never appears in Pi-hole’s Query Log?
Verify the router and client DNS settings, guest or VLAN policies, IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, encrypted DNS, VPN behavior, and hard-coded resolvers. If the request bypasses Pi-hole, an allowlist change there cannot affect it.
Is it safe to share my Pi-hole log for help?
Not without redaction. DNS logs can expose domains visited, browsing history, device names, and LAN IP addresses. Share only the relevant timestamp, domain, status, and blocking source, with identifying and unrelated entries removed.
The Bottom Line
Fix the demonstrated dependency, not the entire vendor namespace: reproduce the exact failure, find the blocked lookup from the correct client, inspect its rule source, allowlist one exact domain, and retry. If the query is absent or the exception changes nothing, remove it and investigate DNS routing, connectivity, authentication, firmware, time, or the vendor service. Keep your DNS history private by sharing only redacted excerpts.
