If your phone or another computer is fast on the same Wi‑Fi while your laptop crawls, troubleshoot the laptop first—but do not assume the wireless card has failed. Hold the network and location constant, test another band or network, then work through signal, interference, software, drivers and power settings. Those comparisons usually identify whether the bottleneck follows the laptop, the room, or the network.
Start by proving the problem is specific to the laptop
A second device working normally is an important clue. Microsoft’s Windows guidance says that when another device connects successfully, the source is likely the affected device. “Likely” is not the same as certain: a laptop may support different Wi‑Fi bands, sit behind a metal obstruction, or run software that the phone does not. Use controlled comparisons before buying hardware.
Run three fair comparisons
- Same network, same location: Place the laptop and a known-good phone or computer side by side. Connect both to the same network name and run the same download or website test.
- Different network: Connect the laptop to a phone hotspot or another Wi‑Fi network. Apple recommends this comparison for a Mac; it also helps separate a laptop problem from a router-specific compatibility problem.
- Different location: Move the laptop close to the router or access point and repeat the test. A large improvement near the router points toward signal strength, obstacles or interference rather than an application fault.
| Comparison result | Most useful interpretation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Only the laptop is slow on the same network | Investigate the laptop’s band support, signal environment, software, driver and power settings. | Continue with the laptop checks below. |
| The laptop is slow on several Wi‑Fi networks | A laptop-side configuration, adapter, antenna or hardware issue becomes more plausible. | Complete software and driver checks before considering repair. |
| The laptop is slow only on one network | Band compatibility, router settings, local interference or the laptop’s saved profile may be involved. | Test another band, forget and reconnect, and compare near the router. |
| Several devices are slow | The shared router, internet service or upstream connection deserves attention. | Test the router and contact the internet provider if necessary. |
| Only one app or site is slow | The radio may be fine; the app, website, VPN, proxy or firewall can be the limiting factor. | Test another site and temporarily investigate network-monitoring software. |
Check the basics before changing settings
Confirm the intended connection
- Verify that the laptop is connected to the intended Wi‑Fi network rather than a guest network, hotspot or distant access point.
- Make sure Wi‑Fi is enabled and Airplane Mode is disabled.
- If the network name appears connected but traffic is unreliable, disconnect and reconnect. A corrupted or stale saved profile can behave differently from a fresh connection.
- Restart the router or access point when the laptop is the only device affected but the laptop’s connection appears abnormal. This is a low-risk test, not proof that the router is defective.
Separate internet speed from Wi‑Fi speed
A laptop can have a strong wireless link and still reach a slow website, overloaded service or blocked application. Compare several unrelated sites or downloads. If ordinary browsing works but one application does not, inspect that application, its proxy or VPN, and security software before changing the wireless adapter.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the right Wi‑Fi band
Routers commonly offer 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and, with newer equipment, 6 GHz. The best band depends on distance, walls, congestion and what both the router and laptop support. Microsoft describes these as trade-offs rather than guarantees.

- 𝐋𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 – This compact USB Wi-Fi adapter provides long-range and lag-free connections wherever you are. Upgrade your PCs or laptops to 802.11ac standards which are three times faster than wireless N speeds.
- 𝐒𝐦𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐋𝐚𝐠 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 – Get Wi-Fi speeds up to 200 Mbps on the 2.4 GHz band and up to 433 Mbps on the 5 GHz band for upgraded web surfing, gaming, and streaming. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- 𝐃𝐮𝐚𝐥-𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟐.𝟒 𝐆𝐇𝐳 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝟓 𝐆𝐇𝐳 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐬 – Dual-bands provide flexible connectivity, giving your devices access to the latest routers for faster speeds and extended range. Wireless Security - WEP, WPA/WPA2, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK
- 𝟓𝐝𝐁𝐢 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐆𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚 – The high gain antenna of the Archer T2U Plus greatly enhances the reception and transmission of WiFi signal strengths.
- 𝐀𝐝𝐣𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐢-𝐃𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐚: Rotate the multi-directional antenna to face your router to improve your experience and performance
| Band | Strengths | Limitations and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz | Longest range, better penetration through obstacles and broad compatibility. Channels 1, 6 and 11 are the usual non-overlapping choices in the 2.4 GHz plan. | Usually lower throughput and more congestion than 5 GHz or 6 GHz. |
| 5 GHz | Typically faster throughput and more non-overlapping channels. | Shorter range and poorer wall penetration; performance can fall quickly at distance. |
| 6 GHz | High throughput and potentially less congestion close to the router. | Requires a Wi‑Fi 6E-compatible router, laptop and drivers, and works best near the access point. |
Test the alternate network name
If the router shows separate names for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, connect the laptop to the other one and repeat the same test in the same place. A laptop that is slow on 5 GHz but normal on 2.4 GHz may simply be too far away or behind too many walls. A laptop that is slow only on 2.4 GHz may be competing with congested or noisy channels. If the router combines bands under one name, use its management interface or temporarily separate the names only if you understand how to restore the original configuration.
Check compatibility before blaming speed
Wireless standards are negotiated between the client and router. Intel states that when the router and client use different wireless standards, speeds are limited by the lower standard. Confirm the laptop’s exact adapter model and the router’s supported standards before assuming a newer router or replacement adapter will help. The 6 GHz option is unavailable unless all required equipment and drivers support Wi‑Fi 6E.
Rule out signal loss and wireless interference
Two devices in the same home do not necessarily experience the same radio conditions. The laptop may be under a desk, oriented differently, next to a metal panel or using an internal antenna with a less favorable position. Apple says wireless interference can make Wi‑Fi devices disconnect or perform poorly.
Use a controlled position test
- Record the laptop’s performance at its normal desk.
- Move it within a few feet of the router, keeping the same band and test.
- Return it to the original position and rotate the laptop or move it away from large metal objects.
- Repeat with the router’s other supported band.
A large improvement near the router indicates a range, obstruction or interference issue. It does not identify a single failed component.

Remove common sources of interference
- Increase distance from microwave ovens, cordless phones, fluorescent lights and wireless video equipment.
- Move the laptop or access point away from metal cabinets, reinforced walls and large appliances.
- Do not cover the laptop’s wireless area with a dock, monitor stand or other dense object.
- Test with Bluetooth accessories and unnecessary wireless peripherals disconnected if the slowdown coincides with their use.
If 2.4 GHz is congested, 5 GHz may improve performance when the laptop is close enough. If 5 GHz loses speed through walls, 2.4 GHz may be the more reliable choice. These are practical tests, not universal rules.
Windows 11 and Windows 10: an ordered fix
1. Run Microsoft’s troubleshooter
In Windows 11, open Get Help and start the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Follow its recommended repairs, then retest from the same location. The troubleshooter can correct routine configuration problems, but a clean result does not rule out interference, an incompatible band or failing hardware.
2. Verify Wi‑Fi and Airplane Mode
Open the Wi‑Fi controls from the taskbar or Settings and confirm Wi‑Fi is on. Confirm Airplane Mode is off. If the laptop has a physical wireless key or manufacturer hotkey, make sure it has not disabled the radio.

4. Test another band and another device
Repeat the same-location comparison on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz when both are available. Microsoft also recommends checking whether another device can use the network. Keep the test fair: same network name, same room and comparable activity.
5. Check reachability to the router
Ping the default gateway address shown in the laptop’s network details. A successful reply confirms that the laptop can reach the router; the remaining problem may be farther upstream, such as the internet service or a particular application. No reply points back to the Wi‑Fi or router link. A single ping does not diagnose every cause, so use it alongside the band and location tests.
6. Inspect and reinstall the adapter driver
Open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, and open the Wi‑Fi adapter’s properties to review its driver version and date. Compare that information with the current driver supplied for the laptop’s exact model by its manufacturer. If the problem began after a driver or Windows change, rolling back or reinstalling the appropriate driver may help.

Before uninstalling an adapter, download or otherwise prepare a backup driver. Microsoft specifically advises having one available so the laptop can reconnect after the old driver is removed. Intel’s clean-install guidance is written for its Wi‑Fi 6 AX201 on Windows 11 and was last reviewed April 27, 2022; use it only when the laptop actually has that adapter, and prefer the laptop maker’s current package for model-specific behavior.

Most Windows 11/10 systems will automatically detect and install the drivers. If the system does not detect the driver, you will need to download it from our website. For Windows 7, you will need to manually install the driver for this wifi card.or you go to the website online-setup support,we do online-setup for you.
7. Check adapter power management
In Device Manager, open the Wi‑Fi adapter’s Properties, select the Power Management tab and, when present, clear Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Apply the change and retest on battery and AC power. This setting can reduce dropouts on some laptops, but it also increases power use, so keep it only if it fixes the symptom.
8. Use Network reset as a later Windows step
When ordinary reconnecting and driver checks fail, Windows offers Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. Reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and returns networking components to their defaults. You will need to reconnect to Wi‑Fi afterward, and custom VPN or network settings may need to be entered again. Treat this as a broad configuration reset, not a speed upgrade.

Check recommendations and diagnostics
If macOS displays Wi‑Fi Recommendations, open them from the Wi‑Fi menu and apply relevant suggestions. If they are not shown, hold Option while clicking the Wi‑Fi menu and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics. Follow the assistant’s prompts and save any report if you need to discuss the result with support.
Look for software that monitors connections
Apple specifically calls out VPN and other software that monitors network connections. Temporarily disconnect a VPN and test again. Also check security, filtering, proxy and traffic-monitoring tools that may inspect every connection. If only one app remains slow after the VPN is disconnected, troubleshoot that app rather than replacing the Wi‑Fi hardware.

Update the Mac and router
Install available macOS updates when possible. Check the router maker’s instructions for firmware updates and apply them according to those instructions. Firmware can affect compatibility, but updating the router is not a substitute for comparing bands and locations.
Try another network
Connect the Mac to a different Wi‑Fi network or hotspot. If it is fast elsewhere, investigate the original router, band configuration and interference. If it remains slow on multiple networks, continue with software and hardware diagnosis and contact Apple, the laptop manufacturer or your network administrator as appropriate.
Interpret the evidence before buying anything
When an adapter problem becomes plausible
If the laptop is slow on several unrelated networks, remains slow beside the router, and still behaves poorly after removing VPN or monitoring software and checking the driver, a laptop-side adapter, antenna or other hardware fault becomes more plausible. The available guidance does not identify a model-specific repair, so record the exact laptop and adapter models, operating-system version, tested bands and comparison results before requesting service.
When an extender might help
An extender addresses a coverage limitation: the laptop is slow or unstable at a distant location, but performance improves near the router. Microsoft describes an extender for situations where moving the router, access point or device is not possible. It is a weak match when the laptop is slow beside the router while other devices are fast.
Why a replacement USB adapter is not the first answer
A USB Wi‑Fi adapter can be a temporary diagnostic workaround in some situations, but the symptom alone does not establish that it is the right purchase. Before considering one, compare the laptop’s exact adapter model, supported bands and standards, operating-system compatibility, antenna behavior and whether the fault follows the built-in adapter across multiple networks. A replacement chosen without that evidence can add another incompatible device without fixing the cause.
A practical decision checklist
- Only one website or app is slow: test another site, then inspect the app, VPN, proxy, firewall or monitoring software.
- Only the laptop is slow at the same desk: test another band, move beside the router, inspect drivers and disable adapter power saving if appropriate.
- Speed improves near the router: address walls, metal, device placement and interference; choose the band that matches the distance.
- Slow only on one home network: forget and reconnect, compare 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, and check router/client standard compatibility.
- Slow on every tested network: finish software and driver checks, then seek model-specific hardware diagnosis.
- All devices are slow: investigate the shared router or internet connection rather than the laptop alone.
Prevent the problem from returning
Keep the laptop’s operating system and manufacturer-supplied Wi‑Fi driver current. Keep the router firmware current according to its maker’s instructions. Use 5 GHz or 6 GHz when the laptop is close enough and both ends support the band; use 2.4 GHz when range and wall penetration matter more. Recheck the laptop’s position after rearranging furniture, adding a dock or placing new electronics nearby. When performance changes, repeat the same-network, same-location comparison before altering several settings at once; changing one variable preserves the evidence needed to identify the cause.
