Start with the low-risk fixes: restart your Chromebook, close unused tabs and apps, remove an extension or app added just before the problem began, check for ChromeOS updates, and review Storage management for low disk space. If the whole device remains slow, use Diagnostics to inspect CPU and memory; contact the manufacturer if problems persist or a test fails. The right next step depends on whether the whole Chromebook, one tab, or one network-dependent page is affected.

Work through the checks one at a time and try the activity that was slow after each change. That helps you tell whether a step made a difference. Avoid jumping straight to recovery: it permanently erases local files, and Google does not describe it as a guaranteed performance fix.

First identify what is slow

Before changing settings, note the scope of the problem. A Chromebook that is sluggish everywhere calls for different checks from a single tab that freezes or a website that loads slowly while everything else works. This distinction can prevent an unnecessary reset or recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The whole Chromebook is slow: Check for many open apps or tabs, recently added extensions or apps, updates, and low storage. If the problem continues, inspect CPU and memory in Diagnostics.
  • One tab freezes or crashes: Try reloading that tab. If it is a single site, compare it with other sites before changing the whole device.
  • Tabs repeatedly reload: Low memory is one possible cause. Close unused tabs, inspect Chrome’s Task Manager, and disable extensions you do not need.
  • Only one website is slow: If other pages load normally, the site itself or the connection may be responsible. A connection-timeout error can mean either that the connection is slow or that the page is busy.

Keep track of what you try and check performance after each change. That makes it easier to tell whether a step helped and avoids undoing several changes to find the cause.

A useful first question is whether the slowdown is consistent or tied to a particular task. For example, if the Chromebook feels normal except when one site is open, start with that page and the connection rather than assuming a hardware problem. If several unrelated tasks feel slow, a device-wide check of open apps, extensions, updates, storage, and Diagnostics is more relevant. Note whether the issue began after installing something, whether it happens after a restart, and whether pages are slow to load or the entire system stops responding. These observations help you choose the next check and explain the symptoms if you contact support.

Try the reversible fixes first

Restart and reduce what is open

  1. Save any work in progress.
  2. Restart the Chromebook using its power menu.
  3. After it starts again, open only the apps and tabs you need and see whether the slowdown returns.

Closing unused windows, tabs, and apps reduces the work the device is doing. If one tab is stuck, try a hard refresh with Ctrl + Shift + r. A hard refresh reloads the current page; it is not a general fix for a Chromebook that is slow everywhere.

Try to reproduce the problem with a small, ordinary workload before opening everything you normally use. If the Chromebook is responsive at first and slows only after many tabs or apps are opened, reduce the number left open and see if that changes the behavior. If it is slow immediately after restarting, continue to the update, storage, and Diagnostics checks rather than repeating restarts without new evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check recently added apps and extensions

If the slowdown started after you installed an app or extension, remove or disable that recent addition and test again. You can also disable extensions you do not use, particularly if tabs keep refreshing. Make one change at a time so you can identify whether it affected the problem.

For a repeatedly refreshing tab, open Chrome’s Task Manager with Shift + Esc. Review which items are using resources, then close an item only if you recognize it and do not need it. Task Manager can help narrow down activity in Chrome; it does not by itself establish that a particular app or extension is faulty.

Use the Task Manager as a clue, not as a list of processes to close indiscriminately. If an item is unfamiliar or you are not sure what depends on it, leave it alone and instead close tabs or apps you recognize. If a recent extension appears to coincide with the issue, disable or remove that extension and test before changing unrelated settings. When the problem began after installing a particular app, removing that app is a targeted, reversible check; deleting several apps at once makes it harder to know which change mattered.

Install available ChromeOS updates

Updates can include fixes for system problems. To check, open Settings → About ChromeOS, then select Check for updates. If ChromeOS downloads an update, a restart may be required to finish installing it. Connect the Chromebook to power while updating to reduce the chance of interruption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → About ChromeOS.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. If an update is available, let it download and follow the restart prompt.
  4. After the Chromebook restarts, test the activity that was slow.

If an update fails, restart the Chromebook and try again using Wi-Fi or Ethernet. On a work or school Chromebook, an administrator may control updates. Contact that administrator if you cannot update the device yourself.

Do not treat an update check as complete if the update has downloaded but the restart prompt has not been followed. The restart may be needed to finish installation. Keep the Chromebook connected to power while the update is underway, and if the update repeatedly fails, follow Google’s update guidance: restart and try with Wi-Fi or Ethernet. On managed devices, the organization may control update availability or settings, so the administrator is the appropriate contact when you cannot complete the process yourself.

Check whether low storage is contributing

Low storage can interfere with tasks such as loading webpages and using Android apps. ChromeOS Storage management shows usage in categories including Downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android storage, and other users. Reviewing the categories helps you decide what can safely be removed rather than deleting files at random.

Open Storage management

  1. Open Settings → System preferences → Storage management.
  2. Review the storage categories and identify what is taking up space.
  3. Remove only files, apps, or local accounts you no longer need, then check whether performance changes.

Free space without losing something important

  • Downloads: Delete only files you no longer need. Move important files elsewhere, such as to Drive, before removing local copies.
  • Offline files: Review files kept available offline and remove local copies only if you can access them another way when needed.
  • Browsing data and download history: Clear data you are comfortable removing. Clearing browsing data can affect saved site information, so consider the consequences before confirming.
  • Android storage: Uninstall apps you no longer use if they are not needed.
  • Other users: Remove an extra local account only after confirming that its locally stored files are no longer needed.

Check the device after cleanup. If storage is not low, or clearing space does not help, continue with the other checks rather than repeatedly deleting files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage management is useful because it separates several kinds of local data instead of showing one undifferentiated list. Check each category before choosing what to remove. A file in Downloads may be the only local copy of something important; an offline file may be needed when you do not have a connection; an Android app may still be in use; and another user’s account may contain files that are not yours to delete. If you are uncertain, leave the item in place or move a needed file somewhere you can access it before removing its local copy. Cleaning storage is a possible contributor check, not proof that low storage caused the slowdown.

Use Diagnostics to investigate CPU and memory

ChromeOS Diagnostics can provide more evidence when general slowness continues. Google says Diagnostics is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later. Open it from the launcher, or go to Settings → About ChromeOS → Diagnostics.

Review CPU activity

Diagnostics reports CPU usage, temperature, and speed. Its CPU graph can help identify apps consuming CPU resources. Look at the graph while the slowdown is happening and note which apps are active. High activity is a clue to investigate, not proof that the CPU is defective.

CPU stress tests are different from simply reviewing the graph: they deliberately put the processor under load and can make ordinary use difficult while running. Do not mistake the resulting slowdown during a stress test for the Chromebook’s normal performance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the graph suggests an app is using CPU resources, consider whether that app is expected to be active and whether closing it changes the symptom. The graph helps you look for a possible relationship between activity and slowness; it does not name a guaranteed cause or establish that a component has failed. Save any useful test details and describe what was happening when you observed the issue.

Run the memory test

The Diagnostics memory test measures system memory. If it fails, faulty memory is one possibility; the result is a reason to contact the manufacturer, not a complete diagnosis or a repair instruction. Save the test details so you can describe the result when requesting support.

If the tests do not identify a clear issue but the Chromebook remains slow, do not infer that a reset or recovery is guaranteed to help. Move to the appropriate support channel based on whether the device is managed and whether it is still receiving updates.

Diagnostics is available on ChromeOS version 90 and later, according to Google Chromebook Help. If you cannot find it, check that you are looking in the launcher or in Settings → About ChromeOS; do not infer from a missing shortcut alone that the Chromebook has a hardware problem. The CPU information and memory test answer different questions: CPU activity can point to apps consuming resources, while the memory test measures system memory. A failed memory test deserves manufacturer attention, but only the manufacturer can help assess what the result means for that particular device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check a slow website or connection separately

A slow page does not automatically mean the Chromebook itself is slow. If other sites work but one does not, the site may be busy or having a problem. If several sites fail or time out, the connection may be slow or unavailable. Compare more than one page before taking device-wide action.

  • If only one tab is affected, reload it; for a stuck page, try Ctrl + Shift + r.
  • If one site is affected while others load, avoid resetting the Chromebook based on that symptom alone.
  • If multiple sites time out, check whether the Chromebook is connected and whether another network-dependent activity works.

Google’s explanation for a connection-timeout error includes both a slow internet connection and a page that is busy. That is why the same symptom does not point to one cause by itself. Compare multiple pages and distinguish between a page-specific failure and a problem that affects several network-dependent activities. If only one site is affected, investigate it as a site or connection issue before moving to system-wide steps. If several pages fail, check the connection rather than assuming that freeing storage or recovering ChromeOS will solve it.

Know when to contact an administrator or manufacturer

Contact the Chromebook manufacturer when performance problems continue after the basic checks, or when Diagnostics reports a failed memory test or other evidence that points to hardware trouble. Include what symptoms you see, when they began, the steps you tried, and any Diagnostics details.

For a managed school or work Chromebook, contact the administrator when you cannot install an update or change a setting controlled by the organization. An administrator may need to handle device policy or update issues; do not try to bypass management controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you ask for help, be ready to explain whether the whole Chromebook or only a tab or site is affected, whether tabs reload or the device freezes, and whether the symptoms began after an app or extension was added. Include the steps you have already tried and any Diagnostics results. This information helps the support contact understand what remains unresolved without treating one symptom or test as a complete diagnosis. Google Chromebook Help recommends contacting the manufacturer if the problem continues after troubleshooting.

Check the Chromebook’s update schedule

An older Chromebook may no longer receive updates, but age alone does not establish that support has ended. Google states that Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates, with qualifications for some devices released before 2021 that use extended updates; feature or service limitations may apply in those cases. The applicable end date is specific to the device.

  1. Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details.
  2. Find the device’s update schedule and check its listed final update date.
  3. Use that device-specific information when deciding whether to seek support or how to proceed.

Support status is one factor, not a performance diagnosis. Consider the device’s actual condition and the work you need it to do; the schedule alone does not establish that replacing it will solve a particular slowdown.

Check the schedule for the specific Chromebook rather than relying on its age or a general rule. Google’s policy states a 10-year automatic-update period, with qualifications for some pre-2021 devices using extended updates. Those devices may have feature or service limitations, and the exact final update date varies by device. Knowing that date helps you determine whether updates should still be available, but it does not explain every slowdown or prove that the device needs replacement.

Reserve recovery for a last resort

Chromebook recovery is not a routine speed tip. Google’s recovery instructions warn that recovery permanently erases files on the Chromebook’s local drive. Back up local files first whenever possible, and follow the current recovery instructions for the specific device.

Recovery may use a USB flash drive as recovery media, but Google warns that some drives may not work well. The guidance cited here does not establish a universally compatible model or capacity, so check the device’s current instructions rather than choosing a specification by guesswork. If you are unsure how to protect files or carry out recovery, contact the manufacturer or your organization’s administrator before proceeding.

Before considering recovery, make sure the basic reversible checks have been tried and that you understand which files are stored locally. A recovery operation is different from closing tabs, removing an unwanted extension, or clearing space: it is destructive to local data. Back up local files when possible and confirm that you can reach the current recovery instructions for the exact Chromebook. If the device belongs to a school or workplace, ask the administrator before proceeding. A USB flash drive may be needed for recovery media, but Google’s guidance cautions that some drives may not work well and does not establish one universal model or capacity.

Choose the next step from the evidence

What you observe Useful next step What not to assume
The whole Chromebook is slow Restart, close unused apps and tabs, review recent additions, check updates and storage, then inspect CPU and memory in Diagnostics. That one particular cause or remedy is guaranteed.
One tab freezes or repeatedly reloads Refresh the tab; for repeated reloads, reduce open tabs, check Task Manager, and disable unneeded extensions. That the entire device needs recovery.
Only one website is slow Compare with other sites and consider whether the page is busy. That the Chromebook itself is at fault.
Several pages time out Check the network connection and try Wi-Fi or Ethernet as appropriate. That a device reset will fix a connection problem.
Memory test fails or trouble persists Save the Diagnostics details and contact the manufacturer; contact an administrator for managed-device update issues. That a test result alone identifies the exact repair.
Considering recovery Back up local files and follow the current instructions for the exact Chromebook. That recovery is a harmless or guaranteed performance fix.

Use the least disruptive next step that fits the evidence. Restarting, closing unused apps, checking an update, reviewing storage, and inspecting Diagnostics preserve a clearer path to understanding the issue than making many changes at once. If the symptom is limited to a site, stay with site and connection checks. If it is device-wide and persists, gather CPU or memory information and contact the appropriate support channel. There is no single remedy that is guaranteed to fix every slow Chromebook.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Chromebook slow if only one website is affected?

A single slow site does not necessarily mean the Chromebook is slow. Google notes that a connection timeout can mean the connection is slow or the page is busy. Compare with other sites before changing device settings or considering recovery.

Can repeatedly refreshing tabs mean my Chromebook is low on memory?

Low memory is one possible cause of repeatedly refreshing tabs. Close unused tabs, open Chrome’s Task Manager with Shift + Esc, and disable extensions you do not need. These steps help investigate the problem but do not prove a specific component is faulty.

Will clearing storage or browsing data make my Chromebook faster?

Low storage can interfere with tasks such as loading webpages and using Android apps, so reviewing Storage management is worthwhile. It is not a guaranteed speed fix. Check categories such as Downloads, offline files, browsing data, Android storage, and other users, and remove only items you no longer need. Clearing browsing data can affect saved site information.

What does a failed Chromebook memory test mean?

The Diagnostics memory test measures system memory. A failed result may indicate faulty memory, but it is not a complete diagnosis or repair instruction. Save the test details and contact the Chromebook manufacturer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Chromebook recovery keep my local files?

No. Google’s recovery instructions warn that recovery permanently erases files on the Chromebook’s local drive. Back up local files first whenever possible, and follow the current instructions for your specific device. Recovery is a last resort, not a guaranteed performance fix.

How can I tell whether my Chromebook still receives updates?

Open Settings → About ChromeOS → Additional details and check the device’s update schedule and listed final update date. Google states that Chromebooks receive 10 years of automatic updates, with qualifications for some pre-2021 devices using extended updates; the applicable date varies by device.

Who should I contact if the Chromebook belongs to my school or workplace?

Contact the administrator if you cannot install an update or change a setting controlled by the organization. For continuing performance problems or a failed memory test, contact the manufacturer as well; do not try to bypass management controls.

The Bottom Line

Start with reversible checks and match them to the symptom: restart and reduce open tabs for general slowness, compare other sites when only one page is affected, and inspect updates, storage, and Diagnostics if the whole Chromebook remains slow. Save test details and contact the administrator for managed-device update issues or the manufacturer for persistent trouble and failed tests. Back up local files before recovery because it erases them; it is not a guaranteed speed fix.
