If an app is slow, refuses to install, crashes, or says it cannot run on your Windows on Arm laptop, first identify your Windows edition and the app’s architecture. On Windows 11, an Arm64 build is the best option; compatible x86 and x64 desktop apps may run through emulation. On Windows 10 Arm, x64 apps do not run. Apps that depend on unsupported device or kernel drivers cannot be repaired by emulation alone.
Work through the checks below in order: record the exact error, look for an Arm64 release, update the app and Windows, run the compatibility troubleshooter for older software, and verify Arm64 driver support for any hardware-dependent feature.
Can I run my Windows apps on my Windows 11 Arm-based PC?
Often, yes—but “runs” can mean native Arm64 execution or emulation, and those are not equivalent. A native Arm64 application is compiled for the processor in an Arm laptop. An x86 or x64 application uses Windows 11’s translation layer, which adds overhead and cannot solve an unsupported driver, service, plug-in, or anti-cheat component.

Microsoft’s Windows Arm-based PCs FAQ states: “Apps rebuilt for Windows Arm-based PCs have the best performance.” Microsoft lists native Arm64 versions of Microsoft 365 applications and examples such as Chrome, Slack, Spotify, WhatsApp, Blender, Affinity Suite, and DaVinci Resolve. Availability changes, so check the publisher’s current download page or compatibility statement rather than relying on an old installer.

Windows 11, version 24H2, includes Prism for improved performance of emulated applications. Microsoft describes Prism as available on Snapdragon X Copilot+ PCs and coming to other Windows 11 devices. Prism can improve translation efficiency, but it does not make every application compatible and does not provide a missing Arm64 hardware driver.
Windows 10 Arm is a different case
Do not apply Windows 10 limitations to Windows 11, or vice versa. Microsoft’s separate Windows 10 Arm guidance says that 64-bit x64 applications do not run there; Windows 10 Arm users need an Arm64, Arm32, or x86 version. Windows 11 supports x64 emulation, subject to application and driver compatibility.
To confirm your platform, open Settings > System > About. Note the Windows edition, version, OS build, processor model, and “System type.” Also record the app version and the complete error message. These details determine which remedy is relevant.
Why an app is slow, refuses to install, or crashes

Emulation applies to user-mode application code. It does not translate every service, kernel driver, filter, plug-in, or hardware interface that an application might install.

Make a precise diagnosis before changing anything
Write down the following before reinstalling software or changing compatibility settings:
- Application name, edition, and exact version.
- Laptop make and model, processor model, and Windows edition.
- Windows version and OS build, especially whether Windows 11 is version 24H2.
- The complete error text, including any code.
- Whether the problem started after an app update, Windows update, driver change, or hardware connection.
- Whether another account or another application has the same problem.
This record prevents a common mistake: treating an architecture or driver limitation as though it were a damaged installation. It also gives the publisher enough information to identify a known issue.
Fix the problem in the least disruptive order
1. Find the publisher’s Arm64 release
- Open the application publisher’s official download or support page.
- Search the page for “Arm64,” “Windows on Arm,” or an explicit Windows 11 Arm compatibility statement.
- Prefer the publisher’s supported installation route. If the application is distributed through Microsoft Store, use its Store listing rather than downloading a separate installer.
- Check release notes for known Windows on Arm, graphics, plug-in, or driver restrictions.
If a native build exists, it normally offers the best responsiveness, battery behavior, and compatibility with Arm-specific components. Do not assume that an installer labeled only “Windows” is native; ask the publisher which architecture it contains.

For a Microsoft Store application, open Microsoft Store, select Library, and choose Get updates (the exact label can vary slightly by Store revision). For software installed from a publisher, use its built-in update command or download the current supported package from the publisher.

Do not remove a working installation before checking whether an update resolves the issue. If the publisher offers separate x86, x64, and Arm64 packages, install the Arm64 package only after confirming that your Windows edition supports it.
3. Install current Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates, including any offered under optional driver updates when they are relevant to the affected device.
- Restart when Windows requests it.
- Open the application again and repeat the same task that failed.
Windows 11 on Arm continues to receive compatibility and emulation improvements through updates. Testing immediately after a restart also rules out a pending reboot that left an updated component inactive.
4. Run Program Compatibility Troubleshooter for an older app
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Program Compatibility Troubleshooter and select Run.
- Choose the affected application, or select the option to locate it if it is not listed.
- Follow the prompts to test recommended settings.
- Run the application using the test settings and report whether the original problem remains.
This is a troubleshooting attempt, not a way to convert an x64-only application for Windows 10 Arm or to create an unavailable driver. If the application still fails, undo any test setting that causes new behavior and return to the publisher’s support path.

If the application opens but flickers, becomes unresponsive, renders incorrectly, or loses access to a device, install the latest drivers offered through Windows Update. Use the laptop maker’s support page only when it specifically provides an Arm64 package for your model. Avoid forcing an x86 or x64 driver onto an Arm system; a driver is a separate compatibility boundary from the application executable.

6. Test without optional add-ons
After updating, temporarily disable third-party plug-ins, shell extensions, overlays, or capture tools that the application loads. A native Arm64 application can still fail because an add-on is built for another architecture. Re-enable extensions one at a time so the incompatible component can be identified. Follow the application publisher’s documented safe-mode or plug-in procedure rather than deleting configuration files at random.
When the real problem is a driver
Hardware-dependent applications may install successfully and still be unusable because their driver is missing. Examples include some printers, PDF utilities, security software, accessibility tools, virtualization products, and anti-cheat systems. Windows 11 cannot emulate a kernel driver merely because it can emulate the application that calls it.
Printers and other peripherals
Microsoft says most printers are supported, including printers that support Mopria, but support depends on either a built-in Windows driver or an Arm64 driver from the manufacturer. Compatibility is model-specific; a different printer from the same product family may use a different driver.

- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device and allow Windows to discover the printer.
- If it is not found, choose the option to add it manually and follow the connection method appropriate to the printer.
- Print a test page and verify scanning, duplexing, color, or other features separately; basic printing working does not prove every model feature is supported.
If Windows cannot find a usable driver, contact the manufacturer with the exact model number and your Windows 11 Arm version. Do not substitute a driver for a similar model without the maker’s approval.
Security, accessibility, virtualization, and PDF tools
These categories often install services or drivers in addition to their visible application. Confirm that the publisher explicitly supports Windows 11 Arm and your Windows build. If the publisher offers only x86 or x64 user-mode files but requires a driver, emulation is unlikely to provide a complete solution.
Games and anti-cheat systems
Some games fail because required anti-cheat drivers are not built for Windows 11 Arm, even when the game’s main executable can run through emulation. Check the game publisher’s support page for an Arm statement and the status of its anti-cheat technology. Microsoft also points readers to the community-maintained Works on WoA site as an evolving compatibility reference. Treat such lists as a starting point and confirm important games with the publisher, because updates can change status.

Improve performance after compatibility is established
If the application works but remains slow, first determine whether it is native or emulated. An emulated application may have higher CPU use, slower startup, or shorter battery life than an Arm64 build. That is a platform trade-off, not necessarily a fault in your laptop.
- Use the latest publisher build and Windows updates before changing application settings.
- Close unnecessary background applications and browser tabs while testing, so you can distinguish emulation overhead from memory pressure.
- Check the application’s own graphics, plug-in, cache, and hardware-acceleration settings against the publisher’s Windows on Arm guidance.
- Use the same file, project, or workload when comparing versions; changing the workload at the same time hides the cause.
- Measure the time to open, load a representative file, and complete the task rather than judging from one brief pause.
Do not claim a fixed percentage improvement from Prism or from a native build. Microsoft describes Prism as improving emulated-app performance, but the result depends on the application, Windows build, processor, workload, and drivers.
What to do when every standard step fails
- Recheck the exact Windows version. A solution documented for Windows 11 may not apply to Windows 10 Arm.
- Search the publisher’s support site using the application version, error text, and “Windows on Arm” or “Arm64.”
- Ask whether the application requires an Arm64 driver, service, plug-in, or anti-cheat module.
- For a peripheral, provide the exact model number, connection type, and Windows build; “the same brand” is not enough to establish driver compatibility.
- If the publisher confirms that the required component is unsupported, stop reinstalling the same package. Use a supported alternative, a web version when the publisher provides one, or hardware with a documented Arm64 driver.
Keep the failed installer and error details only if the publisher requests them, and avoid downloading modified installers that claim to bypass architecture checks. Such packages can be unsupported or unsafe and still cannot supply a signed Arm64 kernel driver.
Limitations to expect on Windows 11 Arm
- Native Arm64 applications generally provide the best performance, but not every publisher offers one.
- x86 and x64 emulation improves application reach on Windows 11, yet behavior and speed vary by app and Windows build.
- Prism availability depends on Windows 11 version and device; Microsoft specifically identifies Snapdragon X Copilot+ PCs and says availability is coming to other Windows 11 devices.
- Drivers remain a separate boundary. Unsupported drivers can block devices, games, security products, accessibility tools, virtualization, and other software even when the main application launches.
- Compatibility lists and publisher support statements can change after an app or Windows update, so verify them for the version you are actually installing.
The practical rule is simple: choose Arm64 when it exists, use emulation only for supported user-mode software, and verify every required driver with the component’s maker.
